Ball lightning kills 1,300 Russians every year

According to official statistics, about 400,000 fires occur in Russia per year (1). They separately highlight forest fires, the number of which is about 36,000. Some experts believe that the real number of fires may be higher: the total number is about 500,000 fires, forest fires 42,000 (2). According to official statistics, about 9,000 people die in fires every year. Alternative data suggests 14,000 people (3.4). Among the causes of fires can be identified: arson - 20,000, malfunctions, violations of operating procedures and safety of all types - 80,000, careless handling of fire - 260,000. These causes are identified. The total number of fires with established causes is 360,000. 40,000 are fires whose cause has not been established (1). In 1963, a study was conducted in the USSR, according to which ball lightning can annually cause 7% of all fires, in which up to 2,100 people die (5). In terms of modern Russia, the order of numbers coincides with 40,000 fires as a result of unknown causes and 1,300 deaths from them annually. For comparison, about 215 people per year die from a regular lightning strike in Russia. Ball lightning, having a power of tens of kilowatts, does not always end its existence with an explosion. Information collected by Americans in the 60-70s shows that in 74% of cases, ball lightning upon contact with objects does not explode, but disappears, often pulsating. At the same time, it sets fire to the material (6). This may explain the difficulty in establishing the cause of the fire, since in this case there are no signs of an explosion. Ball lightning can penetrate into a home from sockets, chandeliers, ventilation, and through glass. It occurs at any time of the year and in any weather conditions. Cases have been described when ball lightning first kills a person in the room, and then causes an explosion or fire (7,8). In Brazil, some of the corpses found at the site of the fire were found to have charred wound channels that caused death. A radical case of such an impact can be called the so-called cases of spontaneous combustion of humans (8). In addition, in most cases there are no witnesses to what happened. American experts believe that ball lightning may be the cause of 12% of all plane crashes. This, in their opinion, is the reason for the long-term interest of the Air Force and intelligence services of Western countries in the subject of UFOs, since 90% of all observed UFOs are luminous spheres (9). Ball lightning, due to its unpredictability and the impossibility of defending against it, for example, during sleep, has been crowded out of the human psyche throughout history. There are estimates that she shows signs of intelligent behavior, which greatly increases the fear of her. (7). The USSR Academy of Sciences recommended underestimating the number of observations of ball lightning in open publications by 15-30 times (10). It is not surprising that these cases are not discussed in the media, since this topic can cause panic. In terms of the degree of silence, this problem can be compared with the coverage of certain diseases or poisonings. As a result of the First World War, about 19 million people died, and up to 90 million people died from the Spanish Flu, which was raging at the same time. The media write about the First World War, but they prefer not to talk about the Spanish flu, since a new epidemic, unlike a war, cannot be prevented in principle. In 2015, 562 people died from poisonous plants and mushrooms in Russia, but 23 cases were reported in the media. On the one hand, the danger of such poisonings must be illuminated; on the other hand, excessive lighting introduces a fashion for poisoning. In a number of cases, the media reached the point of complete absurdity and began to claim that ball lightning does not exist in principle. Some argue that the media are doing this at the request of the Commission on Pseudoscience of the RAS (11). As signs of such actions, there are reports of 400 hypotheses of ball lightning, which translate it into an abstraction format; the fuss around the Dyatlov group, the goal of which is to prove that there was no ball lightning there; placing obviously false videos of ball lightning using the flashlight method in front of glass, followed by exposure. This ignores very recent cases. For example, in 2016, in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, ball lightning flew into a yurt and killed a seven-year-old boy (12).
