Last week’s Deep Learning Indaba in Lagos reinforced an important reality: Africa is not waiting at the edge of the AI revolution. Across the continent, practitioners, researchers and innovators are already helping to shape it. I had the privilege of delivering a keynote, “How Foundation Models Are Transforming Science - and Why Africa Matters.” My central argument was that AI is becoming a new instrument of scientific discovery - and Africa’s opportunity is not merely to apply discoveries made elsewhere, but to originate scientific breakthroughs that “reverse diffuse”science for the world. The poster session brought that possibility vividly to life for me. More than 200 research submissions - including Microsoft Research Paza and Paza Bench, spanned a remarkable range of AI domains, demonstrating the depth, diversity and ambition of the continent’s research community. I also joined a panel hosted by the Gates Foundation on the future of African compute, moderated by Kofi Yeboah of the Mozilla Foundation. I was joined by Kate Kallot-Bucken , CEO of Amini; William Tjhi, Head of Applied Research at AI Singapore; and Maruf Adewole, PhD, Executive Director of MAI Lab. Our discussion moved beyond AI hardware,to the wider ecosystem required to translate compute into meaningful capability: reliable energy, connectivity, talent, strong institutions and access for African researchers and innovators. The week concluded with my remarks at the closing keynote panel, “What Does a Credible Path to AI Sovereignty in Africa Look Like in 2035?”, moderated by Quincy Stumptner. I joined Nyalleng Moorosi of DAIR; Prince Abudu of Cassava Technologies; Babacar Seck of Askya Investment Partners; and Olatunbosun Alake, Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology of Lagos State. It was a spirited discussion. Sovereignty should not mean isolation. It should mean agency-the capacity to make deliberate choices about Africa’s data, infrastructure, models and development priorities, while building global partnerships from a position of capability. I left the convening even more convinced that an important transition is underway: from Africa participating in AI to Africa producing foundational research, shaping its infrastructure and helping determine the terms of its AI future. Yesterday, our team had the privilege of facilitating a workshop at Deep Learning Indaba 2026 titled "Beyond Benchmarks: Scaling Multi-Turn Participatory AI Evaluations in Health and Education." This workshop was a collaborative initiative between Microsoft Research Africa, YUX Design, and Kitala AI, bringing together expertise across research, design, and AI evaluation to explore more participatory and culturally grounded approaches to evaluating large language models. It was inspiring to engage with researchers, practitioners, and AI enthusiasts from across the continent through interactive discussions, co-creation activities, and live evaluation exercises. The depth of the conversations reaffirmed the importance of developing AI systems that are not only technically capable but also context-aware, inclusive, and meaningful for the communities they are designed to serve. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, contributed their perspectives, and made the workshop such a success. We are also grateful to the Deep Learning Indaba organizers for providing a platform that continues to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation across Africa's AI ecosystem. Earlier today, Microsoft Research Americas held its annual Student Poster Event. Summer is filled with bright, energetic, and hard-working students who spend their internships pursuing fascinating and impactful research projects. As expected, many of the posters showcased AI-related work that is breaking new ground and opening new pathways for innovation. The energy in the room was infectious. The students' enthusiasm, curiosity, and passion for their work were evident at every poster. In fact, I found the experience a bit intimidating—in the best possible way. Faced with hundreds of posters, I hardly knew where to begin. After two hours of walking the floor, I was exhausted and had not even made it through half of them. My heartfelt congratulations to all the students and their mentors for the outstanding work they are pursuing. I would also like to recognize the organizers of today's event. Bringing together a showcase of this scale requires a tremendous amount of effort, and they executed it with remarkable enthusiasm and professionalism. The problems these young researchers have identified and are tackling are both ambitious and inspiring. In the years ahead, many of these ideas will undoubtedly appear in influential papers and future products. I am simply grateful that I had the opportunity to see some of them firsthand today.
