Updates
Updates are changes that Jagex have made to RuneScape and related RuneScape website features. Update news posts are blog posts made to the website describing current and planned game updates and other information for the playerbase.
Game updates
[edit | edit source]Game updates may come as hotfixes and coldfixes.
Hotfixes occur without rebooting the game servers (while the game is running, i.e. hot). The change is applied across all game worlds in the middle of gameplay, although it does not necessarily apply to every world simultaneously. There is typically no advance warning or notification to players of a hotfix, which can occasionally lead to surprising behaviour.
Hotfixes are not usually accompanied by a news post because that would delay the update. Instead, they are typically mentioned alongside Patch Notes in a news post announcing a game update the following week. They may be unofficially announced by Jagex Moderators on social media. Some hotfixes are not announced.
Coldfixes on the other hand require a full game reboot, meaning all game worlds will be temporarily taken offline and all players will be logged out. This process normally only lasts a couple of minutes, although it may be longer depending on the size of the update.
When a coldfix is about to occur, a red message box appears warning players that there is a limited time until all players are disconnected from the game for the system update. Coldfixes are usually accompanied by a news post announcing the changes. Once the system has been updated, players then may return to their world. However, players must restart the game client.
Game updates in RuneScape 3 typically occur on Mondays during business hours in the United Kingdom, where Jagex is based. Coldfixes are normally planned in advance, and applied on Monday mornings (or Tuesday when Monday is a Bank holiday in the UK) to release new features and fixes. Hotfixes may occur at any time. In rare emergencies, a fix may be applied out of the normal business hours.
