Why get NSD/Unbound Support from ISC?
NSD and Unbound are free, open source software developed and maintained by NLnet Labs, a not for profit, public benefit foundation. ISC has partnered with NLnet Labs to provide commercial software support contracts to help you get the most out of these applications.
Maintain a Heterogeneous DNS System with One Support team
NSD and Unbound were developed in part to provide alternatives to BIND, which at that time was the only open source DNS server available for professional environments. In many ways, NSD and Unbound are designed on purpose to be different from BIND, and these differences provide you with some built-in risk mitigation for your DNS. If you have multiple different codebases in your production operation, a vulnerability in one cannot take down your entire DNS presence.
This collaboration does not alter the independence of the software engineering teams. If you are running a heterogenous DNS system, it makes sense to go to the one support team who can support both of your software systems.
Professional Support When You Need It
NLNET Labs does not want to build a dedicated support organization, and ISC already has a staff of professional support engineers, based in the US and Europe, already expert in DNS. NLnet Labs trained these engineers on the operation and troubleshooting of Unbound and NSD. The ISC support team helps you get answers to critical problems when you need them, even at night or on weekends.
We will use the same trouble ticketing system we use for BIND and ISC DHCP, so you have one place to report and manage your DNS issues. We will escalate your issues to NLnet software engineering when required, track the resolution of bugs that impact you, and work with you to ensure that your installation is protected.
Sustain the Open Source You Rely On
The DNS is complicated, and maintaining and supporting a DNS server is not free. NLnet Labs employs a professional staff to test, develop, support and release Unbound and NSD.
Your paid support agreement with ISC helps support NLnet Labs in maintaining this critical infrastructure software. We also welcome directed donations for NLnet Labs through our web store.

Subscriber Benefits
Professional Technical Support
Our team of technical support engineers will help you troubleshoot problems, escalate and track bug reports. In the absence of this support, you can always search the internet, or post questions on public mailing lists. If you subscribe, however, we can look at log files and other information from you, we will prioritize bugs that affect you, and you can get help efficiently and privately, without posting your company critical systems information on the Internet.
Priority Bug Fixes and Engineering Support
ISC Technical support staff have a direct path to escalate your issues to NLnet Labs engineering. As an ISC/NLnet Labs support customer, you will receive prioritized bug fixes and patches to keep your business online.
Advance Notification of Security Vulnerabilities
This subscription entitles you to Category 1 Advance Notification, per the NLnet Labs Security Patch Policy. Receive advance notice before NLnet Labs publishes information on an NSD or Unbound security vulnerability. This gives you time to plan and schedule an update to your infrastructure, before any potential exploiters find out about the vulnerability.
About Unbound
Unbound is a validating, recursive, and caching DNS resolver. The C implementation of Unbound is developed and maintained by NLnet Labs. It is based on ideas and algorithms taken from a java prototype developed by Verisign labs, Nominet, Kirei and ep.net.
Unbound is designed as a set of modular components, so that also DNSSEC (secure DNS) validation and stub-resolvers (that do not run as a server, but are linked into an application) are easily possible.
The source code is under a BSD License.

NSD: Name Server Daemon
NSD is an authoritative only, high performance, simple and open source name server. The latest current stable release is NSD 4.1.1. Download the latest version.
NSD is thoroughly tested, there is a regression tests report available: differences.pdf
For NSD 3.0, a memory usage estimation tool is provided.
For NSD 4.0, the memory estimation tool can be compiled in the source tarball with ‘make nsd-mem’ and running it on a config file with the zone files in question.
