Hilary Duff 'still completely repulsed' by drinking her placenta in a smoothie

'I saw that thing, it looked gnar'

Hilary Duff has said she’s “still completely repulsed” that she blended her placenta into a smoothie, then drank it back in 2018. Appearing on Whitney Cummings’ podcast Good For You, she recounted how she was encouraged by her midwives (who she nicknamed “The Witches”) to drink her placenta after the birth of her and Matthew Koma's daughter Banks Violet Bair.

Duff explained to Cummings that her sister had also eaten her own placenta, but in pill form. When pressed however, the Lizzie McGuire star said she herself had eaten hers but “not quite in pill form” - instead opting to blend her placenta with fruits for a more palatable smoothie.

She explained, “So I had a home birth and my midwives, I call them ‘the witches’, they’re a little hippy-dippy....They were like, usually the moms will put a tiny piece of [their placenta] in a smoothie.”

Under their advisement, Duff said she blended her placenta in with “strawberries and berries and bananas.” She continued, “I literally did not taste that.”

She also didn’t eat the whole thing, but said she was “still completely repulsed” that she had done it. She said to Cummings, “I saw that thing, it looked gnar.”

Duff said, “I know it sounds gross, but it’s so badass a woman can grow a temporary organ - and then you can eat it! Treat yourself.”

More women have started to consume their own placentas, as the organ contains a high number of nutrients and hormones and celebrities including Duff and Kim Kardashian have shared their experiences.

According to a 2018 Royal College of Medicine study, many of the reported benefits of consuming your own placenta have not been supported by scientific evidence and “there is a need to undertake controlled research studies to confirm or refute” claims.
