The IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems #IROS2026 was an amazing opportunity for Carnegie Mellon to showcase its expertise, vision, and leadership in the robotics field. The conference attracted more than 7,000 people to Pittsburgh, bringing the global robotics community together and highlighting the breadth of research happening at CMU and throughout city. During IROS, CMU also offered attendees tours of the National Robotics Engineering Center, the Robotics Innovation Center and Mill 19, the headquarters of the Manufacturing Futures Institute. This year, roughly 300 members of the CMU community registered to attend IROS, including more than 170 volunteers helping with the conference. CMU members presented papers, organized workshops spanning topics from navigation and manipulation to locomotion and learning, and delivered keynote addresses. From groundbreaking research to hands-on demonstrations and conversations with researchers from around the world, #IROS2026 showcased the innovation that makes Pittsburgh a global hub for robotics. We're proud to have been part of bringing the robotics community together in our hometown!

Placing a peg in a hole is child’s play — until it's 22,000 miles in space! 🛰️ The Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute and Northrop Grumman are teaching space robots how to dock, refuel, and fix old satellites, ending the days of single-use spacecraft. https://lnkd.in/gBvG76hV

Carnegie Mellon University researchers have unlocked a new level of robotic dexterity with human-inspired, multi-sensory fingertips. 🤖 Building on their previous DeltaHands project (https://lnkd.in/ecxCCa_j), Oliver Kroemer, Zeynep Temel, and their team developed low-cost fingertips using strain gauges and mini microphones behind artificial fingernails. By combining touch and sound, the system allows robots to handle delicate objects at a fraction of traditional costs. The team presented their work last week at #IROS2026 in Pittsburgh! https://lnkd.in/eYHxMgYZ

Today, Carnegie Mellon University and Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel and founder of Griffin Catalyst, announced a historic $3 billion gift to elevate Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and launch Carnegie Mellon University Miami. The new campus will pioneer a model for higher education built for the next era of American innovation. The largest gift by an individual in the history of higher education will provide: • $1 billion for Carnegie Mellon University's Pittsburgh campus, including $500 million in flexible support for the university’s highest priorities and $500 million for its top-ranked School of Computer Science. The school will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. • $2 billion to launch CMU Miami, a comprehensive university campus where education and research will be equally central to the mission. Planned for more than 35 acres in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, CMU Miami will organize learning and inquiry around society’s defining challenges. Interdisciplinary teams of students, researchers, industry leaders and government partners will draw on the full breadth of Carnegie Mellon. They will bring together advanced computing and foundational sciences with the humanities, arts and design to move ideas toward meaningful impact. This historic investment builds on more than 125 years of Carnegie Mellon leadership. It will create new opportunities to prepare students, accelerate discovery and advance American competitiveness. Long-Horizon Adaptive Manipulation Planning (LAMP) helps robots plan not only where an object needs to go, but also how they can work together to get it there. We love LAMP.

Videos of humanoid robots failing — running into barriers, falling down or even accidentally kicking a child (who was not seriously hurt) — rack up hundreds of thousands of views online. Changliu Liu and members of her Intelligent Control Lab watch them as well. But they see these failures as dramatic examples of the dangers humanoids pose as they increasingly operate near people and other robots. To address this safety issue, CMU and Siemens developed PRISM, a new way to monitor when a humanoid can safely stop, helping robots know when to halt before things get risky. This work was accepted to #IROS2026, the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots & Systems, hosted in Pittsburgh this year! https://lnkd.in/e48qx-5t
