The creation of Compstat by former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, Jake Maple and others more than 30 years ago revolutionized policing in America. What was once a static snapshot of seven major crimes has grown into more than 50 various offenses that provide broad insight around the state of crime, drivers of violence and many other takeaways within any particular community. The ongoing modernization of this process was discussed in detail at the panel entitled Compstat in 2026: Better Metrics for Better Decisions with IJIS Institute Director Ashwini Jarral, PMP® and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Assistant Director Timothy Ferguson. Keeping Compstat on the edge of technology is challenging and demands rigor. From integrating multiple sources of crime data into a central hub, to standardizing workflows to allow for accurate tabulation, to incorporating AI with strict standards that ensure humans remain in the loop, the presentation shared keen insights on the state of affairs now and what’s to come. “There is an expectation that we move with the speed of technology, and we take that mandate seriously,” said AD Ferguson. “With NCIC moving to the cloud, there will be broad enhancements around its analytics.” At the end of the day, he also noted the goal of a modern Compstat remains the same now as it always was: “We want to help you make the decision you need to keep you and your communities safe.” To engage with current crime data, visit the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer: https://lnkd.in/e3m9Ehtv #IACP2026
