🌍 From sovereignty to agency: Strengthening trustworthy AI governance in the Caribbean How can countries build AI systems that are both sovereign and globally connected? At #SoDTIC 2026 in Kingston, Jamaica, policymakers and experts explored how national control, regional cooperation and responsible international procurement can strengthen Caribbean agency in the age of artificial intelligence. As part of the EU–Latin America and Caribbean Digital Alliance under the EU Global Gateway initiative, #IRCAI leads the Alliance's AI component, supporting trustworthy AI, policy development and capacity building across the region. During the workshop, Dr. Polona Pičman Štefančič shared Slovenia's and Europe's experience in developing a sovereign, trustworthy and inclusive AI ecosystem. Participants worked together to identify: 🔹 What should remain under national control? 🔹 What is more effective through regional cooperation? 🔹 What can be safely sourced internationally with appropriate safeguards? The discussions highlighted a key insight: for small states, regional cooperation is not a limitation of sovereignty—it is a source of resilience, capability and bargaining power. The workshop also identified practical priorities, including: ✅ Regional AI governance alignment ✅ Common public-sector AI procurement standards ✅ Shared expertise and services ✅ Public-value AI pilot projects ✅ Regional monitoring and learning mechanisms A great example of how international collaboration can support inclusive, trustworthy and human-centred AI governance. #AI #TrustworthyAI #DigitalTransformation #AIStrategy #DigitalSovereignty #GlobalGateway #EU #Caribbean #LatinAmerica #AIforGood #IRCAI #SoDTIC2026 #Governance #ArtificialIntelligence

IRCAI - International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO reposted this
It was a pleasure to host the AI for SDG Action workshop, bringing together researchers, students, and innovators to explore how AI can drive meaningful progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. During the session, we took a deep dive into the tools, methods, and data infrastructure we are developing at IRCAI - International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO. We discussed how high-quality, AI-ready data, responsible AI practices, and collaborative knowledge ecosystems are essential for building impactful solutions for sustainable development 🌴 A particular highlight was exploring our work on AI orchestration for TinyML through the RAIDO Project . As AI increasingly moves to the edge, orchestrating intelligent, energy-efficient, and frugal AI systems becomes critical. We examined strategies for coordinating TinyML models across distributed environments while balancing performance, sustainability, and real-world deployment constraints 💡 Thank you to everyone who joined the discussion, shared ideas, and contributed thoughtful questions 🙏 It’s inspiring to see such enthusiasm for building AI that is not only innovative, but also responsible, efficient, and focused on delivering real impact for the SDGs. Looking forward to continuing these conversations and turning ideas into action. #AI #AIforGood #SDGs #ResponsibleAI #TinyML #EdgeAI #RAIDO #IRCAI #UNESCO #SustainableDevelopment #DataForGood #AIInnovation

💡𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀 This spring Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI), IRCAI organised five workshops in Slovenia to strengthen AI literacy and media literacy among diverse audiences – students, teachers, citizens, journalists and media experts. The sessions were carried out under the EU CERV PERiSCOPE Project and focused on core AI concepts, ethical and societal challenges, bias in AI systems, critical thinking and the regulatory context, including the AI Act. Across the workshops, participants engaged with introductory content and hands‑on activities using tools related to fake news, disinformation, manipulated content and social media analysis. Events took place at JSI, during the ACM national competition in computer science (RTK), and in cooperation with the Slovenian Press Agency and the University of Maribor (FERI) – the final workshop was a joint effort of EU projects PERISCOPE, TWON and SOLARIS. Feedback from participants shows that the workshops were relevant and practically useful, helping them gain a more realistic understanding of AI – its opportunities, limitations and implications for everyday life and professional practice. In particular, they valued the emphasis on ethical AI use, critical evaluation of online content, data protection, algorithmic transparency, and the importance of keeping humans involved in decision‑making.
