Incorporated and founded in 1973 as The Huntsville Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc., the organization was later rebranded with the name of Phoenix. Phoenix is a 501c3 nonprofit, owned, and governed by a volunteer board of directors, comprised of several local business leaders, professionals, and civic leaders, who all donate their time to provide oversight and guidance of Phoenix’s mission and vision. Phoenix works with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) to provide comprehensive and continuous programs to assist people with disabilities entering, remaining, and returning to the work environment. Our Vision is a community free of employment and social barriers for people with disabilities. Our Mission is to assist people, primarily those with disabilities, to improve the quality of their lives.

We’re proud to celebrate our own Cieara Hitt, Director of Vocational Services, who spoke earlier this week at DisruptHR Huntsville at The Belle at Stovehouse! In her presentation, “Hiring Isn’t Dating: Stop Looking for Butterflies,” Cieara brought humor and an important perspective to the hiring process. She challenged organizations to consider whether they are truly seeking qualified employees—or holding out for a “perfect match” with the ideal résumé, interview, personality, and culture fit. From job descriptions designed for “unicorns” to the familiar phrase, “other duties as assigned,” Cieara encouraged attendees to rethink hiring expectations and recognize the capable, talented candidates who may be overlooked when perfection becomes the standard.
