Let that sit with you for a moment. The most important holiday in Black American history is fundamentally about delay. About truth withheld. About freedom that existed legally but was deliberately hidden from the people it belonged to. About two and a half years of stolen lives that should never have been stolen.

That is the story we are remembering today. Not a triumphant moment of America doing right by Black people. A moment of America finally being forced to tell us what was already ours.

What Actually Happened on June 19, 1865

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with approximately 2,000 federal troops and read General Order No. 3 to the gathered crowd.

The order declared, in part: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Roughly 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas heard those words for the first time on that day.

Two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Two and a half years after they had been legally free on paper. Two and a half years after the federal government had declared their bondage ended.

Two and a half years of stolen labor. Stolen wages. Stolen lives. Stolen futures. All happening after the law said it could not.

Try to imagine that. Imagine being legally free for thirty months without knowing it. Imagine the parents who died still believing they were property. Imagine the children born during those years into a bondage that was already supposed to be over. Imagine the families separated, the bodies broken, the labor extracted from people who were legally entitled to walk away the entire time.

That is what June 19, 1865 commemorates. The moment that delay finally ended. The moment freedom became something Black Texans could actually claim rather than something abstractly guaranteed by a government too far away to enforce its own laws.

The Delay Was Not an Accident

This is the part most history books skip when they bother to teach Juneteenth at all.

The delay was deliberate. Slaveholders in Texas knew. They had heard about the Emancipation Proclamation. News had reached them through newspapers, travelers, and word of mouth. They simply chose not to tell.

They continued to enslave, exploit, and brutalize human beings while collecting one more harvest. One more season. One more year of free labor extracted from people they knew, legally, no longer belonged to them.

Texas had become a destination for slaveholders fleeing other Confederate states. As Union forces advanced through the South, white enslavers brought their human “property” to Texas specifically because federal enforcement was weaker there. The state’s geographic distance from Union strongholds made it a refuge for those determined to maintain slavery as long as physically possible.

The Confederacy lost the war on April 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Slaveholders in Texas held the line for another two months, knowing the war was lost, knowing slavery was legally over, choosing to extract every last drop of labor from people they had no legal right to hold.

This is who they were. This is what they did. This is the truth America keeps trying to soften into a triumphant narrative about progress.

Justice Delivered at Gunpoint

Juneteenth is not a story of swift justice. It is a story of justice delayed, denied, and finally enforced at gunpoint.

It took a Union army arriving in Galveston with federal troops to make freedom real for those 250,000 people. Without those soldiers, who knows how much longer those families would have waited. Six more months? A year? Five years? There was no other mechanism forcing white Texans to comply with federal law.

The freedom of Black people in Texas required federal military enforcement. The freedom of Black people anywhere in America has always required federal enforcement. The Civil Rights Act required federal enforcement. School integration required federal troops escorting children past white mobs throwing rocks. The Voting Rights Act required federal oversight of states determined to disenfranchise Black voters.

Every meaningful expansion of Black freedom in this country has come from outside the local power structures that benefited from our oppression. Every protection has required someone with more power than the oppressors to step in and say no more.

That is why Juneteenth matters. Not because freedom was granted, but because freedom had to be delivered. Not because the law changed, but because the law had to be enforced. Not because America wanted to do right, but because Black people refused to accept anything less and federal power finally aligned with our claim to humanity.

The Lessons We Cannot Afford to Forget

Juneteenth carries lessons that should be required learning for anyone serious about understanding America.

Progress is not automatic. Rights on paper mean nothing if they are not protected, enforced, and defended. The Emancipation Proclamation existed for two and a half years before it meant anything to the people in Texas. The law was on the books. The reality on the ground was bondage. The gap between legal freedom and actual freedom requires constant work to close.

Power does not yield without pressure. White slaveholders in Texas did not wake up one morning and decide to do the right thing. They were forced. By war. By military occupation. By the presence of federal troops with weapons. Every gain Black people have made in this country has required pressure that the powerful did not want to acknowledge or respond to. Marches. Boycotts. Lawsuits. Voter mobilization. Public shame. Federal intervention. Without sustained pressure, the powerful default to maintaining their advantage.

History is contested ground. The story of Juneteenth could not be told for over a century in most American classrooms. The delay between 1863 and 1865 was deliberately obscured to support a narrative of America as a country that “ended slavery” rather than a country that had to be dragged toward acknowledging Black humanity. When we tell the full truth, we understand America differently. That is exactly why some people work so hard to prevent the full truth from being told.

What This Moment Reveals

Right now, in 2026, we are watching civil rights be dismantled in real time.

Voting rights gutted by Supreme Court decisions and state legislation designed to disenfranchise Black voters. Affirmative action erased by the same court that ruled in Brown v. Board of Education. DEI programs under attack by lawmakers who claim they want a “colorblind” society while actively legislating to maintain racial hierarchy. Books removed from school libraries and curricula because they teach accurate history. The teaching of Black history itself rebranded as “divisive” and banned in multiple states.

The same delays. The same denials. The same forces that kept those Texans enslaved for two and a half extra years are alive and well today, just wearing different uniforms and using different language.

They are not waiting two and a half years to tell us we are free. They are working to ensure we forget we ever were. To erase the history that explains why we are here. To dismantle the protections that took generations to build. To return us to a version of America where Black people exist on white people’s terms rather than as full citizens with rights worth defending.

The work is not finished. The Emancipation Proclamation did not finish it. The Civil War did not finish it. The Civil Rights Act did not finish it. Reaching Texas with Union troops did not finish it. Every generation has to claim freedom anew because every generation faces forces determined to take it back.

Why We Celebrate Anyway

Despite all of this, we celebrate.

We celebrate because our ancestors survived what should have been unsurvivable. Because they kept faith with futures they would never see. Because they passed down love, joy, music, food, and humanity through conditions designed to destroy all of those things.

We celebrate because Black joy in defiance of systems built to deny it is itself a revolutionary act. Because our continued existence, thriving, creating, loving, and laughing is the answer to every force that tried to extinguish us. Because we are still here when we were not supposed to be.

We celebrate because the children who heard General Order No. 3 read aloud in Galveston on that June day in 1865 grew up to build communities. Families. Schools. Churches. Businesses. Movements. They created Black Wall Street, the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, every freedom dream their ancestors prayed they might one day live to see.

We celebrate because celebration itself is how we keep the truth alive. The stories we tell at cookouts. The traditions we pass to our children. The food we eat that connects us to those who came before. The colors we wear, the songs we sing, the prayers we offer up. All of it preserves history that powerful forces would prefer we forget.

How to Honor This Day

Celebrate loud. Celebrate proud. Celebrate Black joy, Black history, Black brilliance, and Black resilience.

Eat the food that connects you to your people. The red drinks symbolizing the blood and resilience of our ancestors. The barbecue, the watermelon, the foods that carry centuries of survival and creativity.

Wear the colors. Red, black, and green. The Pan-African colors that connect us to the broader diaspora, to the continent, to the global Black community that exists beyond the borders of any nation.

Tell the stories. The ones America tries to soften. The ones textbooks leave out. The ones your grandparents and great-grandparents carried until they could pass them down. The hard truths and the proud histories together. They belong to the same story.

Pass them down. To your children. To your nieces and nephews. To young people in your community who deserve to know the full truth of where they come from. The full truth of who they are. The full truth of what their ancestors endured so they could exist.

Support Black businesses today and every day. Read books by Black authors. Donate to Black-led organizations doing the work of preserving our history and protecting our future. Educate yourself on the parts of Juneteenth that most Americans were never taught.

What Juneteenth Demands of Us

When we celebrate Juneteenth, we are not just remembering. We are recommitting.

To the ancestors who survived the unsurvivable. Who refused to be broken by systems designed specifically to break them. Who kept their humanity intact in conditions designed to strip it away. Who passed down love, faith, music, and resistance through generations that could have been completely destroyed.

To the descendants who carry the work forward. Who continue building, creating, advocating, demanding, refusing to accept less than full humanity. Who teach their children. Who organize their communities. Who run for office, write the books, make the art, build the businesses, and shape the culture.

To the truth that freedom is never given. It is always taken, defended, and renewed. Every generation has to fight for it. Every generation has to protect what previous generations won. Every generation has to expand the definition of who freedom belongs to, who it must protect, who it must serve.

This work does not end. It never has. It never will. Each generation faces its own version of the forces that delayed freedom for those 250,000 people in Texas for two and a half extra years. Our job is to recognize those forces in our own time and respond accordingly.

The Bottom Line

Juneteenth is not just Black history. It is American history. The full story of what America has been, what it has done, what it has resisted doing, what it continues to deny.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is asking you to forget on purpose. To accept a sanitized version of history that protects current power structures by hiding their origins. To pretend America’s progress on race has been linear and intentional rather than forced and incomplete.

We refuse to forget. We refuse to let history be rewritten while we are still alive to tell the truth. We refuse to let our ancestors’ suffering be diminished into easier narratives that make white Americans comfortable.

Today we celebrate. Tomorrow we keep working. Always we remember.

To every Black person celebrating today: I see you. I love you. I am proud of us. Of what we have survived. Of what we have built. Of who we continue to become despite everything designed to prevent it.

To everyone else: This day is about us, but the lessons belong to everyone willing to learn them. Freedom delayed is freedom denied. History hidden is power preserved. The work of justice is never finished, only continued.

Imagine being so threatened by a Black woman that you spend years of your life screaming about her, and she still doesn’t know your name. 🙄

What Actually Happened

The fight was held on the South Lawn of the White House to apparently “celebrate” America’s 250th birthday and Donald Trump’s 80th. Joe Rogan, the self-styled king of brave conversations, looked flustered, said nothing meaningful, and moved on. Trump sat in the front row and smiled. The crowd laughed. Bud Light sponsored the moment.

This is what this administration is now selling as celebration. Misogynoir wrapped in a flag, broadcast on Paramount+, applauded by a sitting president on the lawn of the people’s house. The rest of the world is watching, and the rest of the world is laughing.

America is supposed to be the leader of the free world. Instead, on its 250th birthday, it gave us a heavyweight fighter screaming conspiracy theories about a former First Lady while the president smiled in the front row.

This is not patriotism. This is not celebration. This is cruelty staged as entertainment, performed on the most symbolic lawn in the country, with sponsors, broadcasters, and the highest office in the land all complicit in legitimizing it.

A Reminder About Who Michelle Obama Actually Is

For anyone genuinely confused about the woman these men spend their lives obsessing over:

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was born on the South Side of Chicago to working-class parents. Her father worked at a water treatment plant. Her mother eventually worked as a secretary at a bank. They taught her that education was non-negotiable.

She graduated from Princeton University in 1985, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. Her senior thesis examined how Princeton’s Black alumni felt about race after graduation, a topic that was groundbreaking at the time.

She earned her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1988, where she worked at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau providing free legal services to low-income clients.

She became a corporate attorney at the prestigious Sidley Austin law firm in Chicago, where she was assigned to mentor a young summer associate named Barack Obama.

She left corporate law to become Assistant to the Mayor of Chicago, then Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. She founded the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, a nonprofit dedicated to leadership development. She served as Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, where she developed the school’s first community service program.

She served two terms as the first Black First Lady of the United States. She launched Let’s Move!, an initiative addressing childhood obesity. She championed Reach Higher, encouraging young people to pursue education beyond high school. She co-founded Joining Forces, supporting military service members, veterans, and their families.

She wrote Becoming, which sold over 17 million copies and became the best-selling memoir of all time. She wrote The Light We Carry. She launched the Higher Ground production company with her husband, producing award-winning content including the Oscar-winning documentary American Factory.

She has received honorary degrees from institutions including Princeton, Tuskegee, Spelman, City University of New York, and others. More honorary degrees than these critics have functioning brain cells.

That is Michelle Obama.

Who Josh Hokit Is

Josh Hokit is a 28-year-old UFC fighter who has built his post-fight brand on insulting Black women he could never measure up to. He made similar comments about WNBA star Brittney Griner earlier this year, using transphobic and racist tropes that reveal more about his own insecurities than about his targets.

His entire public persona is constructed around being cruel to Black women in public spaces. That’s the brand. That’s the business model. That’s what passes for charisma in certain circles now.

Outside of these moments designed to generate outrage and clicks, most people couldn’t tell you a single notable thing he’s accomplished. His relevance is entirely dependent on attacking women whose accomplishments dwarf his own beyond measure.

This is what insecurity looks like in real time. A small man, in a small ring, screaming about a woman who is not thinking about him.

The Pattern That Must Be Named

This is the unspoken truth about misogynoir.

Black women are not allowed to exist in peace, even when we have done absolutely nothing to anyone. Our existence alone is treated as offensive. Our success is treated as suspicious. Our femininity is questioned, our motherhood is mocked, our intelligence is disputed, our beauty is denied.

All because some men cannot handle a world where Black women thrive without their permission.

The “Michelle Obama is a man” conspiracy has been circulating in right-wing spaces for over a decade. It started with Alex Jones. It was amplified by Trump-adjacent figures. It has been thoroughly debunked countless times. None of that matters to the people spreading it because the conspiracy was never about facts. It was always about expressing rage that a Black woman was First Lady. That a Black woman was educated, articulate, accomplished, and beloved by millions.

These men cannot accept that a Black woman from the South Side of Chicago became one of the most admired women in the world. So they attack her femininity, her body, her gender itself. Because if they can dehumanize her, they can dismiss her. If they can dismiss her, they don’t have to reckon with her existence.

Same playbook applied to Serena Williams. Same playbook applied to Megan Thee Stallion. Same playbook applied to Brittney Griner. Same playbook applied to Simone Biles. Same playbook applied to every Black woman who achieves at the highest level and refuses to apologize for it.

The script never changes. Question her gender. Mock her appearance. Dispute her intelligence. Deny her humanity. Then claim it’s just jokes when called out.

What This Moment Reveals About America

That this happened on the White House lawn. That a sitting president watched and smiled. That Bud Light sponsored it. That Paramount+ broadcast it. That Joe Rogan, who claims to champion “free speech” and “honest conversations,” sat silently while a Black woman was attacked into his microphone.

Every entity involved made a choice. To platform this. To profit from this. To legitimize this through their presence and silence.

This isn’t a one-off. This is a culture that has decided cruelty toward Black women is acceptable entertainment when staged correctly. It’s a country celebrating its 250th birthday by giving Americans a televised attack on a former First Lady whose only crime is existing while Black, educated, and successful.

The rest of the world is watching this. They are taking notes. They are recalibrating their understanding of where America actually stands on dignity, respect, and basic decency. The “leader of the free world” framing gets harder to maintain when this is what the free world looks like on the symbolic 250th anniversary of independence.

How Michelle Obama Will Respond

She will not.

That is the most powerful thing about her. She will not lower herself to acknowledge Josh Hokit because Josh Hokit does not exist at her altitude. She has children to raise. Books to write. A foundation to run. Cultural impact to continue building. Speeches to deliver. A life that exists in spaces these men will never access regardless of how loudly they scream.

Her silence isn’t avoidance. It’s strategy. It’s clarity about what deserves her energy and what doesn’t. It’s understanding that engaging with cruelty validates it. That responding to people determined to disrespect you only extends their relevance.

Michelle Obama lives so rent-free in these men’s heads, she might as well be on the deed. She owns property in their consciousness they cannot evict her from no matter how loud they scream. She occupies their thoughts in ways their own accomplishments never could.

Meanwhile, she keeps blooming. Keeps writing. Keeps speaking. Keeps showing up as exactly who she is. Unbothered. Unmoved. Unfazed.

That is the real insult to weak men like Josh Hokit. The simple fact that she will not say anything at all because they will forever be beneath her.

To Every Black Woman Watching This Unfold

I see you.

I see you watching another Black woman get attacked publicly, viciously, for the crime of being accomplished and visible. I see you absorbing the message yet again that no amount of education, achievement, or grace will protect you from cruelty designed specifically for women who look like us.

I see you scrolling past these headlines while trying to function at work, in your family, in your community. Carrying the weight of knowing that what they say about Michelle is what they think about all of us. That our existence in spaces of power is treated as offense rather than achievement.

I see you. And I want you to know something.

We are not the problem. We have never been the problem. Our excellence is not what is wrong with the world. Our visibility is not what threatens stability. Our refusal to shrink is not what’s dividing the country.

The problem is a culture that cannot tolerate Black women in positions of power without manufacturing reasons to dehumanize us. The problem is men so threatened by our existence they devote their lives to attacking it. The problem is institutions that profit from our pain while claiming to celebrate diversity.

Keep going. Keep blooming. Keep refusing to apologize for taking up space. Keep ignoring people whose entire relevance depends on attacking you. Keep building lives so full and rich that critics cannot touch what you’ve created even when they try.

Michelle Obama is showing us how. Decade after decade. Attack after attack. She keeps living, keeps creating, keeps thriving while her critics scream into microphones nobody will remember by next week.

The Bottom Line

Josh Hokit will be forgotten. The fight will be forgotten. The moment will fade into the long catalog of cruelty this era has normalized.

Michelle Obama will not be forgotten. Her books will be read decades from now. Her speeches will be studied. Her impact on American culture will be analyzed by historians long after the names of the men attacking her have dissolved into irrelevance.

That’s the only justice that matters. Not getting the last word. Not winning the public feud. Outliving the noise through the simple act of continuing to be excellent, visible, and unbothered.

Some women rise so high that critics can only see their own reflection when they look up. Michelle Obama is one of those women. The fact that men like Josh Hokit cannot stop screaming about her is the loudest possible confirmation of her power.

There is a particular kind of quiet that arrives when you reach a milestone birthday. Not the loud, balloon-filled, candle-blowing kind of quiet. The other one. The one that finds you in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday, looking at your reflection, wondering when the face looking back became this version of yours.

I’m having one of those birthdays. The kind that ends in a zero. The kind that announces itself with seriousness. The kind that makes you take inventory, whether you wanted to or not.

As a Gemini, half of me wants to climb to the rooftops and shout this milestone into the wind. The other half wants to disappear into a candlelit room with a book, a glass of wine, and absolutely no one knowing what day it is. Both impulses are real. Both are honest. Both are me. ♊️

The Truth About Milestone Birthdays

Let me be honest about what these birthdays actually do to us.

They remind us. Not gently. Not subtly. They remind us that we are temporary. That time isn’t infinite. That the decades we treated as endless are quietly counting themselves backward now. They remind us of the dreams we deferred, the people we lost, the versions of ourselves we said goodbye to without ceremony.

There’s a particular vulnerability in turning a new decade. The body that used to bounce back doesn’t quite bounce the same way. The face you’ve known your whole life starts revealing new lines, new softness, new evidence that you have been here, living, accumulating moments. The mirror becomes a quiet conversation about mortality whether you wanted that conversation or not.

I think we don’t talk enough about this. The grief tucked inside celebration. The mortality humming underneath the candles. The way getting older makes you painfully aware of how finite everything is.

If you’re scared of getting older, I want you to know your fear is normal. Reasonable. Human. We all feel it. We just don’t all admit it.

The Other Option

Here’s what I keep returning to in this season of reflection.

The only alternative to getting older is the one nobody actually wants. The one that ends the conversation entirely. The one that takes the choice away.

Every birthday, no matter how complicated our feelings, is a continuation. Every new line on our face is evidence that we are still here. Every gray hair, every soft place, every change in our bodies is proof of life. Of survival. Of having made it through another year of whatever this strange, beautiful, brutal existence keeps asking of us.

When I frame it that way, the fear softens. Not completely. The mortality doesn’t disappear. The temporariness remains. But the perspective shifts. Getting older stops being something happening to me and starts being something I’m fortunate enough to do.

How privileged I am to be here. To have lined skin that tells stories. To have a body that has carried me through years of becoming. To have a heart that still works, a mind that still wonders, a soul that still reaches for more.

The people we have lost would trade anything to keep aging. Anything.

What This Decade Has Taught Me

Looking back, I am proud of where I have been, even the parts that broke me.

I built a company from nothing. I stood on a TEDx stage. I wrote a book that comes out this summer with one of the most respected business publishers in the world. I crossed oceans, started over, lost things I thought I needed, found things I didn’t know I was missing.

I learned that home is not a place. It’s something you carry inside you. Something you build with your own hands out of patience and prayer and the willingness to keep showing up for yourself even when everyone else has moved on.

I learned that life rarely arrives where we expected it to. The straight lines we drew in our twenties turn out to be spirals. The destinations we imagined turn out to be detours. The five-year plans we wrote with such certainty turn out to be drafts of something we couldn’t have imagined.

I am not exactly where I thought I would be at this age. I am sitting with uncertainties. I am waiting on prayers. I have questions I still cannot answer. There are dreams I am still carrying that have not yet found their season.

That is okay. That is more than okay. That is just what it looks like to be alive and unfinished.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Earlier

Perfection is not the goal. It never was. The pursuit of perfection is what kept me small for years, afraid to try things I would not master immediately, afraid to be seen in my becoming, afraid to be human in a world that rewards performance.

Authenticity is the goal. Showing up as yourself. Letting people see the real version even when she is tired, confused, contradictory, learning. The version of you that is messy and magnificent in the same breath.

Authenticity does not mean having it all figured out. It means having the courage to admit when you don’t.

I wish someone had told me earlier that the years would move faster than I expected. That I would blink and decades would pass. That the people I loved would not always be available to call. That regret weighs more than risk and the things we don’t do haunt us longer than the things we try and fail at.

I wish someone had told me earlier that joy is not something you arrive at. It’s something you collect along the way. Small, sacred moments of presence. A laugh that catches you off guard. A meal shared with people who feel like home. A morning where the light hits the room a certain way and you remember you are alive.

I wish someone had told me earlier that love is the only currency that matters in the end. Not the love that performs for an audience. The love that shows up at four in the morning when you need it. The love that stays when staying is hard. The love that you give freely because giving it is its own reward.

On Faith and Receiving

I was reminded recently that I used to pray for the life I am living now. That stopped me. It made me put down whatever I was doing and sit with that truth.

The version of me who once felt lost, who once wondered if any of this was possible, would not believe what her future held. She would marvel at this life. She would weep with gratitude for the things I sometimes take for granted.

I have not arrived. There is no arriving in this life. There is only the continual becoming. The next chapter. The next prayer. The next mountain to climb or valley to walk through.

What I have is this moment. This breath. This birthday. This particular configuration of love and friendship and purpose and possibility that took every choice and every detour and every season to create.

I am healthy. I am happy. I am held. I am loved.

That feels like more than enough. That feels like everything.

To my family, who taught me what love looks like in its purest form. To my friends, who chose me even when I was not at my best. To my clients, who trusted me with their cultures and their teams and their tender places. To my readers, who show up here week after week and let my words mean something. We are walking, breathing collections of every kindness ever offered to us.

The lines on your face are not failures. They are the records of having lived. They are evidence that you laughed, that you cried, that you furrowed your brow trying to figure things out, that you smiled at people you loved enough times to leave marks.

Your changing body is not a problem to solve. It is a vessel that has carried you through everything. Through grief and joy and triumph and uncertainty. It deserves your reverence, not your harsh critique.

The years passing are not stealing from you. They are giving you the gift of perspective. Of wisdom. Of knowing yourself well enough to choose differently than you would have at twenty. Of understanding what actually matters and what was just noise.

You are not running out of time. You are being given more time. Each birthday is a gift you didn’t have to receive. The alternative is the one nobody wants.

So celebrate. Or don’t. Hide if you need to. Shout if you can. Both responses are valid. Both are human. Both are sacred.

Just please remember that you are still here. And being here, even on the hard days, even on the confused days, even on the days when the mirror shows you something you didn’t expect, is the whole point.

My cup runneth over with love that has found me when I needed it most. With friendships that have weathered seasons. With purpose I never could have planned for. With the bone-deep gratitude of being here, on this day, in this body, in this moment.

This is the life I once prayed for. Imperfect, unfinished, beautiful.

Here’s to the next chapter, whatever it brings. May it bloom alongside everyone who helped make this one so beautiful.

Last weekend, Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend co-hosted “The Black Party (Roland Garros ‘RG’ Edition)” at Soho House Paris. A dinner for Black tennis players competing at the French Open. Coco Gauff, Gaël Monfils, Asia Muhammad, and Christopher Eubanks were there. Black excellence at one table in a sport that has historically made room for them at none.

The internet, predictably, lost its composure.

The Predictable Outrage

White commentators called it “divisive” and asked what would happen if white people hosted an “all-white dinner.” As if tennis itself hasn’t been an all-white dinner for over a hundred years. As if the country clubs where this sport developed weren’t built specifically to exclude Black players. As if the tournaments, the boards, the coaching staff, the umpire pools, the entire infrastructure of professional tennis hasn’t operated as a permanent all-white dinner since its inception.

The mental gymnastics required to find one dinner for Black tennis players problematic while ignoring a century of structural exclusion is olympic-level work. The same people who never noticed tennis was overwhelmingly white suddenly developed urgent concerns about equity when Black players gathered for a meal.

That’s not principled objection. That’s discomfort with Black joy occurring in a space they’ve always considered theirs.

Let’s Revisit the History

Some of you seem to have forgotten what Black tennis players have actually endured to be in these spaces. Let me remind you.

Althea Gibson became the first Black athlete to play at the US National Championships at Forest Hills in 1950, after years of being barred from major tennis events held at all-white tennis clubs. She faced discrimination throughout her career. When she won the French Championships in 1956, becoming the first Black player to win a Grand Slam title, she did so despite a sport that had structurally excluded her for years. After her professional career, despite five Grand Slam singles titles and 11 Grand Slam titles total, she wrote that her “triumphs had not destroyed the racial barriers once and for all.” She died in 2003 in relative poverty, largely forgotten by the sport she’d helped transform.

Serena Williams was fined $17,000 at the 2018 US Open for confronting an umpire over what she called sexist treatment. Following that incident, the Australian newspaper Herald Sun published a cartoon by Mark Knight depicting her with exaggerated features that the National Association of Black Journalists denounced as “repugnant” and reminiscent of Jim Crow-era caricatures. The cartoon also depicted Naomi Osaka, who is Japanese and Haitian, as a blonde white woman. The Australian Press Council later ruled the cartoon was not racist. Twenty-twenty-something audiences got to watch in real time how willing major institutions remained to dehumanize Black women athletes.

Taylor Townsend wrote about her childhood experiences in tennis for the Players’ Tribune, describing how parents at junior tournaments resented her presence. They felt their kids were “getting robbed of an opportunity,” that they weren’t getting the “country club tennis experience” they had signed up for. Tennis was supposed to be “their” sport. And yet there was their kid, getting beat by a “big Black girl.” She wrote about crying late at night, trying to understand why she was treated differently. She was a child.

Coco Gauff has spoken openly about questionable officiating. Taylor Townsend has reported being subjected to additional security checks at tournaments while white players breeze through, and being mistaken for other Black players because, as she put it, people think “all of us look the same.”

This is not ancient history. This is the lived experience of Black tennis players right now, in 2026, at the tournaments these critics watch comfortably from their couches while complaining about a dinner.

What Naomi and Taylor Actually Said

Naomi Osaka, when defending the event, said exactly what needed to be said: “There’s a fellowship, a camaraderie that doesn’t need words to describe. You just feel at peace knowing that there’s another person who has experienced similar things to you and you feel less alone.”

Taylor Townsend added: “It’s important for us to come together because this sport is naturally very isolating and selfish. I feel like it’s important to break that mold, support each other outside of the sport and away from the courts, and build genuine friendships that last beyond the court.”

A dinner. Not a protest. A dinner.

Yet the outrage came swift, loud, and revealing. The same people who have never once questioned why tennis has been overwhelmingly white for decades suddenly developed a passionate concern about equity. The same critics who never noticed when tournaments, boards, sponsorships, and opportunities flowed almost exclusively to white players suddenly became experts on inclusion when Black players gathered for one evening.

The Double Standard That Built Tennis

When white people gather in tennis, it’s called networking. Tradition. Community. The country club. The locker room culture. The legacy of the sport.

When Black people gather in tennis, it’s called divisive. Exclusionary. A problem requiring immediate concern.

White players have always had networks. They’ve had clubs that welcomed them automatically. They’ve had coaches, sponsors, mentors, and infrastructure built around their presence. They’ve had decades of being the default in this sport. Nobody calls those networks divisive. Nobody asks why white players gather at restaurants together. Nobody demands that white players’ friendships be examined for exclusion.

But Black players, who have spent over a century being made to feel isolated in this sport, who often find themselves as the only Black face at tournaments, who have been systematically excluded from the country clubs where tennis grew up, who continue to face additional scrutiny and security checks at the highest levels of the sport, somehow having one dinner together is what triggers white concern about exclusion?

The audacity is staggering.

Why Safe Spaces Exist

What Osaka and Townsend understood, and what their critics refuse to grasp, is that safe spaces for marginalized people are not the opposite of inclusion. They are the consequence of it.

We gather because we have always been required to. We celebrate ourselves because the world refused to. We create communities within spaces that excluded us because survival demanded it. Our friendships, our gatherings, our moments of recognition between people who share specific experiences exist because broader society failed to provide that recognition.

When you’ve spent your entire career being one of very few Black faces in the locker room, the player’s lounge, the practice court, the press conference, the awards ceremony, the corporate sponsorship meeting, gathering with people who share that specific isolation isn’t exclusion. It’s exhale. It’s the relief of not having to explain why you flinch at certain comments. The freedom of not having to translate your experience for people who’ll never understand it. The peace of being among people who already know.

That’s not divisive. That’s necessary.

What Tennis Won’t Acknowledge

Tennis won’t acknowledge that the same critics horrified by one dinner have been completely comfortable with the systemic exclusion that made it necessary. They won’t acknowledge that decades of overwhelming whiteness in this sport happened by design, not accident. They won’t acknowledge that the discomfort they feel watching Black players gather is the discomfort of recognizing what’s been hidden in plain sight for over a century.

They won’t acknowledge that Black tennis players have been performing visibility, accessibility, and acceptability for the entire history of the sport, and they’re tired. Tired of being the only one. Tired of being expected to integrate into spaces while never being allowed to gather in their own. Tired of being told their isolation is their imagination while being denied opportunities to address it.

One dinner. That’s what this took to expose the entire structure. One dinner, and the carefully maintained myth of tennis as a sport that “doesn’t see color” collapsed into people openly demanding that Black players not be allowed to see each other.

What This Actually Represents

Osaka refused to back down. She defended the dinner as a celebration, not exclusion. She made clear she will apologize for many things in life, but never for being Black. Townsend stood firm beside her. Coco Gauff, Gaël Monfils, Asia Muhammad, and Chris Eubanks attended without apology.

That’s leadership. That’s modeling for the next generation what refusing to apologize for your existence looks like. That’s showing every Black child watching that you can be excellent in spaces designed to exclude you and still gather your community in those spaces without shrinking yourself to make others comfortable.

To Naomi, Taylor, and every Black player who sat at that table: thank you. You are not divisive. You are doing what every generation of Black excellence before you has done. Finding each other in rooms that were never built for you, and refusing to apologize for the joy of being found.

The Bottom Line

This conversation isn’t about a dinner. It never was.

It’s about whether Black people are allowed to gather, celebrate, and find community in spaces that have historically excluded them. It’s about whether our friendships require justification while white friendships receive automatic legitimacy. It’s about whether our existence in elite spaces must be permanently isolated or whether we can also experience belonging.

The critics know exactly what tennis has been for over a century. They know who built the country clubs. They know who designed the rules. They know who’s been welcomed and who’s been tolerated. They just preferred when no one named it out loud.

Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend named it. By hosting one dinner. By gathering Black excellence in a space that has historically refused to acknowledge Black excellence exists. By doing what white players have done unremarkably for over a century.

That’s not racism. That’s Black joy, gathered, protected, and unapologetic. ✊🏾

The fact that one dinner exposed this much says everything about how much work still needs to happen in this sport. The dinner wasn’t the problem. The reaction was. And the reaction revealed exactly why the dinner was necessary in the first place.

Keep gathering. Keep celebrating. Keep refusing to apologize. Tennis can either grow up or keep showing us who it’s always been.

The kind of breath you didn’t realize you’d been holding through the cold months, the grey skies, the season of survival rather than thriving. June shows up with longer days and softer evenings and the gentle reminder that light is something you can count on returning, even when it feels like it never will.

As a June baby, I might be biased. But there’s something about this month that feels like permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to bloom. Permission to want more than just getting through.

What June Teaches Us

June doesn’t apologize for taking up space. The sun stretches itself across the sky for hours longer than it did in winter. Flowers that spent months underground push through soil because they trust their time has come. Trees that looked bare and uncertain in February now stand full and confident in their green.

Nothing in June is trying to shrink itself. Everything is reaching toward light, toward warmth, toward becoming whatever it was always meant to be.

That feels like a lesson worth carrying into the workplaces we build, the relationships we nurture, the lives we’re trying to live.

How often do we apologize for taking up space? How often do we shrink to make others comfortable? How often do we hide the parts of ourselves that need light to grow because we’ve been told our growth might inconvenience someone else?

June reminds us we don’t have to. The flowers don’t ask permission to bloom. The trees don’t dim themselves so nearby plants feel better. The sun doesn’t set early to accommodate people who prefer darkness.

The Month of Love and Togetherness

There’s a reason June feels romantic. It’s the most popular wedding month, with more couples saying “I do” in June than any other time of year. The tradition goes back centuries, all the way to the Roman goddess Juno (whom the month is named after), the protector of women, marriage, and the home. People believed getting married in her month would bring blessings of love and happiness. 💍

June also gives us the longest day of the year (the summer solstice around the 21st), which means more daylight to laugh with the people we love, more golden hour walks, more evenings that feel endless in the best way. The light doesn’t rush off. Neither should we.

It’s the month of Pride, where love in all its forms gets celebrated openly and loudly. 🏳️‍🌈 The month of graduations, where we honor people stepping into new chapters. The month of Father’s Day. The month of strawberries at peak ripeness, roses in full bloom, and lavender starting to perfume the air.

Even the birthstone, pearl, is born from something soft growing inside something hard, which feels like the most June metaphor possible. Beauty formed slowly, patiently, in quiet places we couldn’t see.

What This Month Invites

🌸 Slowness in a culture that demands speed
🌼 Warmth in conversations that have been cold
🌺 Joy without justification or explanation
🌷 Growth that doesn’t require permission
🌻 Light that you don’t have to earn

June asks us to remember that we deserve ease. That rest isn’t laziness. That bloom isn’t selfish. That taking up space isn’t aggression. That wanting more isn’t ingratitude.

This month invites us to reach for whatever has been waiting underground in us. The dream we’ve been afraid to name. The boundary we’ve been too tired to enforce. The truth we’ve been too polite to speak. The version of ourselves we’ve been too scared to become.

June creates conditions where growth becomes possible. The question is whether we’ll trust ourselves to grow.

For Everyone, Not Just June Babies

You don’t have to be born in June to claim what this month offers.

You don’t need a specific birthday to deserve longer light, gentler days, permission to bloom. You don’t need an excuse to slow down, soften, choose ease over efficiency for once in your life.

This month belongs to everyone willing to receive what it’s offering. The June babies, the December babies, the people who don’t celebrate birthdays at all. The ones thriving and the ones surviving. The ones blooming and the ones still pushing through soil that feels too hard.

Whoever you are, wherever you are in your journey, June is here. Waiting. Generous. Patient. Ready to give you whatever light you need to grow.

Take it. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to deserve it. You just have to be willing to receive it.

What I’m Wishing for You This Month

May your June be soft where life has been hard.

Emma Grede went on Keke Palmer’s podcast and declared that working from home is “career suicide” for women. She doubled down in Elle magazine, in Fortune, on every platform that would give her space to perform expertise on workplace advancement. Her advice to all women, particularly Black women? Visibility. Proximity. Be in the room. Show up in person. That’s how you get the promotion, the pay rise, the corner office.

Let me explain why this is not just wrong, it’s insulting.

Who Gets to Speak for Black Women

Emma Grede is biracial. Light-skinned. Racially ambiguous enough that she can code-switch between Blackness when it’s profitable and proximity to whiteness when it opens doors. She married Jens Grede, a Swedish white man and creative executive whose connections in fashion and entertainment helped catapult her into rooms most Black women will never see.

She built her $400 million fortune through partnerships with the Kardashians, the most famous white family in America who’ve built their entire empire on appropriating Black culture, Black aesthetics, Black bodies, and Black business ideas while maintaining white privilege and generational wealth.

Let’s be clear about who Emma Grede chose as business partners and what that choice represents.

The Kardashians have faced multiple lawsuits from Black-owned businesses for alleged design theft. Khloé Kardashian’s Good American brand (which Emma Grede co-founded and serves as CEO) operates in the same fashion space where the Kardashian family has repeatedly been accused of stealing from smaller Black designers who lack the legal resources to fight back effectively.

Kim Kardashian’s shapewear line Skims (where the Grede family holds investment stakes through their company) launched in a market pioneered by Black women entrepreneurs, many of whom have accused the Kardashians of copying their designs, marketing strategies, and even product names after meetings where Black founders shared their ideas in good faith.

Multiple Black-owned brands including Destiney Bleu (jewelry designer), Tizita Balemlay (artist), and others have publicly accused the Kardashians of design theft, with some cases settled quietly out of court under NDAs that prevent the full story from being told. The pattern is clear: meet with Black creators, copy their work, use superior resources and celebrity to dominate the market, settle if necessary, repeat.

Emma Grede chose to build her fortune inside this machine. She co-founded Good American with Khloé Kardashian in 2016 and became the first Black woman investor in Kim Kardashian’s Skims. She didn’t just partner with the Kardashians; she became integral to their business empire’s expansion into markets that Black women created.

This is the woman now lecturing all Black women about workplace ethics, visibility, and career advancement. A woman who built wealth by partnering with a family credibly accused of systematically stealing from Black creators, then used that platform to become the “first Black woman on Shark Tank” as if her path represents anything replicable or ethical for the rest of us.

The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

Who Emma Grede Actually Is

She owns a $24 million home in Bel Air. A $45 million property in Malibu. She describes herself as a “max three hour mom” on weekends, which tells you everything about the household staff, nannies, personal assistants, and infrastructure she has access to that makes “showing up” to an office feel like a choice rather than an impossible calculation.

Her children attend elite private schools that cost more per year than many Black women earn. Her lifestyle is maintained by staff whose labor she likely doesn’t consider when she talks about “career suicide” for women who work remotely. Her wealth was built through proximity to people accused of harming Black businesses, yet she positions herself as an authority on Black women’s workplace success.

This is the woman telling all Black women, regardless of skin tone, class background, or access to resources, that our careers are suffering because we’re not visible enough? That working from home is “career suicide” when for many of us, it’s the first time we’ve had protection from daily workplace violence?

The audacity is breathtaking.

What Visibility Actually Costs for Black Women

If visibility were the answer, explain the pay gap that persists regardless of our presence.

Black women still earn 63.7 cents for every dollar white men earn. We’ve been in the rooms Emma claims we’re not showing up to. We’ve been visible. Hypervisible, actually. Very seen as Black. Very unseen as brilliant.

We’ve shown up early and stayed late. We’ve dressed the part, code-switched until our natural voices became foreign, smiled through microaggressions that would make others quit immediately, and delivered results that consistently got credited to other people. We’ve been proximity personified, working from offices while watching our ideas get stolen, our contributions minimized, our presence tolerated but our advancement resisted.

Visibility didn’t save us. Visibility made us targets.

It made us the ones whose tone gets policed while white colleagues yell without consequence. Whose competence gets questioned while mediocre white employees get promoted. Whose mistakes become evidence of hiring risk while others’ errors become learning opportunities. Whose ideas get ignored until a white colleague repeats them and receives credit.

Emma Grede’s visibility advice ignores what visibility actually costs Black women across all skin tones who don’t have her specific advantages. Her success isn’t a visibility story. It’s a proximity to whiteness, access to wealth, and partnership with cultural appropriation story.

What Remote Work Actually Provided

For many Black women, working from home isn’t laziness or career sabotage. It’s protection.

Protection from the daily bias Emma Grede’s proximity to whiteness buffers her from experiencing at the same intensity. Protection from the heightened scrutiny that follows Black women through office hallways regardless of how light or dark our skin is when we lack her connections. Protection from the exhaustion of navigating spaces that were never designed for us to thrive in, that tolerate our presence but resist our advancement.

Remote work gave us room to breathe for the first time in our careers. Room to heal from burnout that Emma Grede with her household staff and $400 million net worth doesn’t have to consider. Room to build careers on our own terms without shrinking ourselves to make others comfortable. Room to be evaluated on our work rather than how well we perform palatability for white comfort.

Emma Grede telling all of us to give that up, to return to offices where our Blackness is constantly managed, monitored, and measured, reveals how little she understands the costs of visibility for women who don’t have her specific privileges.

The Privilege She Refuses to Acknowledge

Emma Grede conveniently ignores the role that colorism, class, and access play in career advancement. She ignores that her light skin and European features opened doors before she ever demonstrated competence. She ignores that marrying into wealth and whiteness gave her access to networks that actively exclude most Black women regardless of our qualifications or how early we arrive.

She ignores that her proximity to whiteness, her partnership with the Kardashians (despite their documented pattern of harming Black creators), her marriage to a Swedish creative executive, her ability to navigate elite white spaces without triggering the same racist responses that many Black women face, gave her a blueprint that is simply not replicable for the rest of us.

Her success story isn’t “work hard and show up.” It’s “leverage proximity to whiteness, marry into connections, partner with people who profit from Black culture while allegedly stealing from Black businesses, then pretend your path is universally available to all Black women.”

That’s not a roadmap. That’s gaslighting.

Why She Doesn’t Speak for Me

As a dark-skinned Black British woman, Emma Grede does not speak for me. We have nothing in common beyond a checkbox on a demographic form.

Her experience navigating workplaces is not my experience. Her access to rooms through marriage and colorism is not my access. Her proximity to power through whiteness is not my proximity. Her ability to code-switch between Blackness and ambiguity is not available to women whose Blackness is unambiguous and impossible to leverage strategically.

She also doesn’t speak for many of my lighter-skinned Black friends who recognize that her specific combination of privileges (colorism, class, marriage into wealth, partnership with the Kardashians despite their problematic history with Black creators) makes her experience fundamentally different from most Black women’s realities regardless of skin tone.

When she lectures all Black women about workplace advancement, she’s speaking from a position of privilege she refuses to acknowledge. She’s centering her experience while erasing the reality for millions of Black women whose lack of proximity to whiteness, whose absence of wealthy white husbands with industry connections, whose refusal to partner with people who harm Black businesses, makes our paths fundamentally different from hers.

Stop positioning yourself as the mouthpiece for all Black women navigating the workplace when your path was paved by connections, colorism, marriage into wealth, and partnerships with people accused of systematically stealing from Black creators.

What Really Pisses Me Off

Emma Grede doesn’t care about her privilege. That’s what makes this particularly infuriating.

She could acknowledge it. She could say “my experience is specific to my circumstances and doesn’t represent all Black women.” She could use her platform to amplify Black women without her advantages instead of speaking over us. She could recognize that her proximity to whiteness, her marriage, her partnerships gave her advantages and stop pretending her success is purely meritocratic.

She could address her choice to build wealth by partnering with a family credibly accused of harming Black businesses. She could explain how she reconciles being the “first Black woman” in certain spaces while enriching herself through association with people alleged to have stolen from Black creators.

She doesn’t. She positions herself as the voice of Black women’s workplace experience while ignoring how her specific privileges shaped that experience in ways unavailable to most of us. She lectures us about visibility and showing up while her visibility came through proximity to whiteness and partnerships that many Black women would ethically refuse.

I look at her as an unethical capitalist who is anti-Black sometimes, and I will not be explaining what I mean by that any further.

The Bottom Line

Biracial, light-skinned, and racially ambiguous women have every right to their success. They deserve to celebrate their achievements. They can build businesses, make fortunes, partner with whoever they choose.

What they cannot do is pretend their path is universal. What they shouldn’t do is lecture all Black women about visibility when their own visibility is mediated by proximity to whiteness most of us don’t have. What they must stop doing is speaking for all Black women when their experience represents a specific subset whose privileges they refuse to acknowledge.

Emma Grede’s “career suicide” advice might work for women who look like her, who married like her, who built wealth through partnerships with white capital and white celebrity despite those partnerships’ problematic implications for Black creators. It doesn’t work for the rest of us who face marginalization that her privileges shield her from, who refuse to build wealth by partnering with people accused of harming our communities.

Remote work isn’t killing our careers. Workplaces that never valued us in the first place are. The difference is that now we have options beyond performing visibility in spaces designed to extract our labor while denying our advancement.

Emma Grede can keep her advice. Those of us building careers without her privileges, without her willingness to partner with people accused of stealing from Black businesses, will keep protecting ourselves in whatever ways we can access, including working remotely when that’s what survival requires.

She doesn’t speak for us. Stop pretending she does.

Let me tell you about this extraordinary man and the historic crew beside him.

Victor Glover: The Pilot Who Made History

Victor Glover grew up in Pomona, California. Became a Navy test pilot. Flew 24 combat missions in Iraq. Completed over 400 carrier landings on aircraft carriers. Earned three master’s degrees in flight test engineering, systems engineering, and military operational art and science.

Was the first Caribbean American to live on the International Space Station during his six-month mission in 2020-2021. Now? First Black man to journey to the Moon. First Black man to see the far side of it with his own eyes. First Black man to look back at Earth from a distance no human has ever reached.

Out of over 300 NASA astronauts in history, only 14 have been Black. Glover just flew further than all of them. Further than anyone. Ever. What a flex! 🙌🏾🌍

Why This Moment Matters Even More Right Now

In a political climate where Black history is being systematically erased from classrooms, where books about Black achievement are being banned, where curriculum that teaches accurate history is being outlawed, celebrating Victor Glover’s achievement isn’t just nice. It’s necessary.

They can ban the books. They can rewrite the curriculum. They can remove the history from schools. They cannot erase what happened 252,756 miles from Earth on April 6th. They cannot delete the images. They cannot undo the record. They cannot make Victor Glover’s face disappear from the history of human spaceflight.

This is why representation matters. This is why saying his name matters. This is why making sure every child knows that a Black man piloted humanity farther than anyone has ever traveled matters. Not despite the current climate. Because of it.

When they’re erasing our past, we document our present. When they’re banning our stories, we create new ones they can’t touch. When they’re rewriting history, we make history they can’t rewrite.

Victor Glover’s achievement belongs to everyone. His Blackness makes it particularly important for communities watching their contributions systematically removed from official records while still being expected to contribute everything.

The Crew That Broke Barriers Together

Beside him sat Christina Koch, the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit. She already held the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman at 328 days on the International Space Station. She completed the first all-female spacewalk with Jessica Meir in 2019. Now she’s orbited the Moon, going where no woman has gone before.

Commanding them was Reid Wiseman, a single father who lost his wife Carroll to cancer in 2020. He’s been raising their two daughters, Katie and Ellie, alone ever since while training for the most ambitious human spaceflight mission in over half a century. Before launch, one of his girls snuck homemade cookies into his luggage with a note telling him to enjoy them on the Moon. 🥹

Rounding out the crew was Jeremy Hansen, the first Canadian to travel to the Moon. A former fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Hansen represents Canada’s partnership in humanity’s return to lunar exploration and becomes only the fourth Canadian to travel to space.

The Moment They Named a Crater

As the crew broke the distance record while flying over the lunar far side, they asked mission control for permission to name a crater they’d just observed.

Jeremy Hansen’s voice cracked as he spoke: “We lost a loved one. Her name was Carroll, the spouse of Reid, the mother of Katie and Ellie. It’s a bright spot on the Moon, and we would like to call it Carroll.”

All four astronauts embraced and wept. 252,756 miles from home, traveling faster and farther than any humans in history, they paused to honor the woman who couldn’t be there but whose memory traveled with them.

Carroll’s Crater now sits on the far side of the Moon. A permanent memorial. A bright spot, just like Hansen said. A reminder that exploration isn’t about leaving people behind. It’s about carrying them forward.

What This Mission Represents

This is what representation looks like at the edge of the universe.

A Black pilot commanding spacecraft systems that will eventually take humans to Mars. A woman shattering every ceiling between Earth and the Moon. A widowed father carrying his late wife’s memory to the stars while his daughters watch from mission control. A Canadian astronaut proving that space exploration belongs to all nations willing to reach for it.

History being made while honoring the ones we carry with us. Records broken while remembering those who can’t be there to witness it. Barriers shattered while building memorials that will outlast us all.

Victor Glover didn’t just pilot a spacecraft. He piloted possibility. Every Black child who sees his face associated with “farthest human from Earth” learns something about what’s achievable. Every girl who watches Christina Koch orbit the Moon understands that space isn’t just for boys. Every child who lost a parent sees Reid Wiseman and knows grief doesn’t disqualify you from greatness.

The Most Dangerous Part Still Ahead

Soon, they’ll face the most dangerous part of their mission: reentry.

They’ll pierce Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 mph, nearly 17 times faster than a bullet. The heat shield will endure temperatures of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit as friction turns their velocity into thermal energy. For several minutes, they’ll be surrounded by plasma so hot that radio communications cut out entirely. Mission control will lose contact. The crew will be on their own, trusting engineering and physics and years of preparation.

If everything works as designed, they’ll splash down in the Pacific Ocean. If it doesn’t, well. Space exploration has always carried risks that some people find acceptable and others don’t survive.

Wishing them the safest of landings back to Earth and into the arms of their families waiting for them. 🙏🏾

His Blackness just makes his achievement visible to communities that have been systematically excluded from seeing themselves in these roles.

That visibility matters. Representation matters. Not for its own sake, but because it expands what children believe is possible for people who look like them.

The Bottom Line

A Black man just piloted humanity farther from Earth than anyone has ever traveled.

Say his name: Victor Glover.

Remember this crew: Victor Glover, Christina Koch, Reid Wiseman, Jeremy Hansen. The team that broke Apollo 13’s 56-year distance record. The crew that orbited the Moon and paved the way for Artemis III’s lunar landing. The astronauts who carried Carroll Wiseman’s memory to a crater on the far side of the Moon.

They’re not done yet. They still have to come home. When they do, they’ll have proven that the future of space exploration looks like all of us.

And somewhere, a Black kid in Pomona, California just learned that someone who grew up where they grew up traveled farther than any human in history.

That’s the power of representation. That’s why Victor Glover’s name should be everywhere.

That’s what happens when we finally let excellence look like everyone.

The people who start them are seldom the ones who die in them. Wars are started by men with egos, men with agendas, men who sign papers and shake hands in air-conditioned rooms then sleep soundly in guarded compounds while entire generations are erased.

It’s never their children. It’s never their families. It’s never their neighborhoods reduced to rubble or their loved ones buried under buildings that stood for centuries until someone decided they shouldn’t anymore.

Whose Children Pay the Price

It’s schoolgirls in Iran, killed by missiles while sitting in their classroom learning math and history and dreaming about futures they’ll never see.

It’s families in the Democratic Republic of Congo, displaced generation after generation so the world can mine cobalt and coltan for the phones we check compulsively, the laptops we work on, the electric cars we drive to feel good about our environmental impact while children work in tunnels that collapse on them.

It’s children in Gaza who’ve never known a day without siege, without the sound of drones overhead, without wondering if today is the day their home becomes rubble. Children who draw pictures of what peace might look like because they’ve never actually experienced it.

It’s communities in Sudan, slaughtered while warring generals fight over gold mines and political power. Entire villages erased. Women assaulted as weapons of war. Children orphaned. The UN issues statements. The world keeps turning.

It’s civilians in Yemen, bombed for over a decade in a conflict most people can’t even explain, funded by weapons sold by governments that claim to value human rights. The worst humanitarian crisis in the world, they called it. Then it stopped being news because crises only stay urgent until they become routine.

It’s villages in Myanmar, burned by a military that faced no meaningful consequences. Rohingya refugees with nowhere to go. Children who watched their parents killed. The world expressed concern. Then moved on.

It’s lives in Syria, shattered by violence that somehow stopped being “breaking news” despite ongoing tragedy. In Haiti, where gangs control territory while the international community debates intervention without acting. In Ethiopia, where Tigray faced horrors that barely penetrated Western consciousness. In Nigeria, in Palestine, in too many places to name in a single post.

The Privilege of Distance

What a privilege it is to scroll past. What a privilege to read these words, feel a moment of sadness, maybe share a post, then check what’s for dinner.

I think about this constantly. How we carry on. How we laugh and plan trips and complain about traffic and celebrate promotions and worry about deadlines while people who dream like us, who want the same ordinary things we want (safety, love, enough food, education for their children, a future worth planning for) are being erased.

How we’ve normalized horror because it’s happening “over there.” How we’ve learned to compartmentalize human suffering based on geography, on whether people look like us, on whether their deaths fit a narrative we’re comfortable with.

We see the images. We know it’s happening. We just don’t know what to do with that knowledge, so we file it away and return to our lives because the alternative (truly feeling the weight of all that suffering) seems unbearable.

What Easter Should Remind Us

It’s Easter weekend. A time of reflection. Resurrection. Hope. New beginnings. The promise that death doesn’t have the final word.

I keep thinking about accountability instead.

The world feels upside down. Not because evil exists. Evil has always existed. Humans have always been capable of horrific cruelty justified by religion, nationalism, resource control, power consolidation, or simple hatred of difference.

It feels upside down because we’ve become too comfortable to hold those causing harm accountable. Because we have more information than any generation in human history. We can watch atrocities unfold in real time. We can see the evidence. We can hear the testimony. We can witness the destruction.

We watch. We document. We hashtag. We change our profile pictures. We sign petitions. Then we let the powerful carry on, untouched. Protected by systems designed to shield them from consequences. Enriched by the very conflicts that destroy others.

The people making decisions about war don’t bury their children. They don’t flee with whatever they can carry. They don’t watch their life’s work turn to ash. They don’t wonder if today is the day they die.

They make speeches. They justify. They claim necessity. They invoke security and sovereignty and strategic interests. They use language that distances them from the actual human cost of their decisions.

Then they go home to comfortable beds while somewhere, a mother holds a child who won’t wake up. A father digs through rubble looking for his family. A grandmother watches her village burn. A teenager loses a leg to a landmine. A family crosses a border with nothing, hoping to survive another day.

The Questions That Keep Me Awake

Sometimes I lie awake wondering how we do this. How we just go on. How we manage to hold both truths simultaneously: that we’re horrified by suffering and that we’re not horrified enough to actually sacrifice anything meaningful to stop it.

How we talk about human rights while selling weapons to regimes that violate them. How we condemn violence while funding it. How we express concern while changing nothing about the systems that profit from endless conflict.

How we’ve created a world where a child’s life has different value depending on where they were born. Where some deaths deserve vigils and memorials and policy changes while others barely register as statistics.

How we watch people drown trying to escape war zones we helped create. How we criminalize refugees fleeing violence our governments participated in. How we debate whether children deserve safety while those children are dying.

What We Owe Each Other

I don’t have answers. I don’t know how to stop wars when I’m not the one starting them. I don’t know how to hold the powerful accountable when systems are designed to protect them. I don’t know how to make people care about suffering that doesn’t directly affect them.

What I do know is this: We owe each other more than thoughts and prayers and temporary outrage. We owe each other sustained attention. Uncomfortable questions. Willingness to examine our own complicity in systems that create suffering.

We owe the children of Gaza and Congo and Sudan and Yemen and Myanmar and Syria and everywhere else the same grief we’d demand if they were our children. The same urgency. The same insistence that their lives matter, that their deaths should shatter us, that their suffering should move us beyond hashtags and profile picture changes.

We owe them accountability for those who profit from their pain. For weapons manufacturers whose stock prices rise with each conflict. For politicians who fund wars while cutting social programs. For systems that treat human beings as acceptable collateral damage in pursuit of power and profit.

This Easter Weekend

This Easter weekend, while some of us celebrate resurrection and hope and new life, children are dying in wars they didn’t start. Families are being destroyed by conflicts they didn’t choose. Communities are being erased by violence they can’t escape.

The people who started those wars will sleep comfortably tonight. They’ll eat well. They’ll see their families. They’ll make plans for the future.

The people dying in those wars won’t.

That’s not a divine mystery. That’s not an inevitable tragedy. That’s a deliberate choice. By specific people. With names and titles and power.

We know who they are. We watch them make these choices. We just let them carry on as if this is how things have to be.

It’s not.

We can demand better. We can refuse to look away. We can insist on accountability. We can recognize our own complicity and work to dismantle it. We can treat every child’s life as sacred, not just the ones who look like ours or live in places we can pronounce.

We can stop war. Not all of us. Not alone. Not easily or quickly.

We can stop acting like it’s inevitable, unchangeable, someone else’s problem to solve.

Because every war that continues is one we chose not to stop. Every child who dies is one we decided we could live with losing. Every family destroyed is one we determined didn’t matter enough to intervene.

James Baldwin understood what we keep forgetting: “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.”

The children dying in Iran are ours. The children in Congo mining cobalt are ours. The children in Gaza who’ve never known peace are ours. The children in Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Syria, Haiti, Ethiopia are ours. Every single one of them.

When we treat some children as expendable based on geography or politics or convenience, we prove Baldwin right. We reveal our incapacity for the morality we claim to value.

We bloom together or we wilt alone. That’s not just a saying. It’s truth. When children die anywhere, we’re all diminished. When we normalize their suffering, we’re all complicit. When we look away because it’s easier than acting, we all wilt.

This Easter, may we choose resurrection over resignation. Accountability over apathy. Action over endless observation.

May we recognize that all children are our children and may we finally treat them that way.

We talk a lot about men blocking women’s progress. We talk far less about the women who watched it happen and said nothing. Or worse, the ones who made it happen and smiled while doing it.

This is not an easy post to write. It is a necessary one.

When Women Undermine Women

The woman who excluded you from the meeting did not happen to be a woman. The one who took credit for your idea did not happen to be a woman. The one who questioned your competence in rooms you were not in, who made you feel like the problem when you raised a concern, who smiled at your face and undermined you behind your back. She knew. She remembered what it felt like to be you. She chose her seat over your dignity anyway. 😔

This hurts differently than when men do it. When a man blocks your advancement or questions your competence, it fits a pattern we recognize and name. We have language for it. We have frameworks to address it. We expect resistance from systems built by and for men.

When a woman does it, especially a woman who publicly champions other women, the betrayal cuts deeper. She knows the obstacles you face because she faced them herself. She understands the microaggressions because she experienced them. She remembers what it felt like to be dismissed, overlooked, questioned, excluded.

She knows. She does it anyway.

The Pattern Across Industries and Roles

Through my work transforming workplace cultures globally, I have heard this story more times than I can count. From Black women. From women of color. From young women navigating their first leadership roles. From women who trusted another woman’s public commitment to solidarity only to discover it was performance, not practice.

The details are always different. The wound is always the same.

🌸 The mentor who built you up in private and dismissed you in public. She encouraged your ideas in one-on-ones, then stayed silent when men in meetings questioned your credibility. She praised your work privately, then failed to advocate for you when promotions were discussed.

🌼 The senior woman who had the influence to sponsor you and used it to protect herself instead. She had the power to open doors. She chose to keep them closed, perhaps worried that your advancement might threaten her position or that advocating for you might cost her political capital she wasn’t willing to spend.

🌺 The colleague who called herself a champion of women and redefined who counted as women when it was convenient. She supported women’s initiatives until supporting certain women became uncomfortable. Then suddenly those women were “difficult” or “not ready” or “not the right fit.”

🌷 The leader who talked about lifting as she climbed and pulled the ladder up the moment she arrived. She shared her story of overcoming obstacles to reach leadership. She just didn’t extend the same opportunities to women coming behind her, protecting her position rather than creating pathways for others.

🥀 The ally who was only an ally when it cost her nothing. She championed women’s equality in low-stakes moments. When real risk appeared, when advocacy might create friction or sacrifice comfort, her allyship evaporated.

What Solidarity Actually Requires

Solidarity is not a badge you wear at a women’s empowerment event. It is a choice you make when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, and costs you something. 🌿

Real solidarity looks like:

Advocating when no one’s watching. Speaking up for a woman’s promotion in the closed-door leadership meeting where decisions get made, not just praising her publicly where it’s safe and visible.

Using your privilege to create access. If you have influence, using it to open doors for women who face barriers you didn’t, even when that means sharing opportunities you could have kept for yourself.

Correcting in real time. When someone takes credit for another woman’s idea or dismisses her contribution, interrupting that moment publicly rather than offering private sympathy later.

Risking discomfort for justice. Challenging policies, practices, or people who harm women, even when that challenge threatens your relationships or standing with those in power.

Holding doors rather than closing them. Understanding that another woman’s advancement doesn’t diminish yours. That creating pathways for others strengthens everyone rather than threatening your position.

The women who changed the world for other women did not do it from a place of safety. They did it at personal and professional risk. They recommended when it was risky. They spoke up when it was costly. They held the door even when holding it meant someone might walk through ahead of them.

That is what solidarity actually looks like. Not the hashtag. Not the panel appearance. Not the inspirational quote on your LinkedIn profile. The private, unglamorous, potentially costly choice to show up for another woman when nobody is watching and there’s no credit to be gained. 🌱

Why This Matters for Workplace Culture

This pattern doesn’t just harm individual women. It damages entire organizational cultures.

When women can’t trust other women to advocate for them, it reinforces isolation. Everyone protects their own position rather than building collective power. Competition replaces collaboration. Scarcity thinking dominates rather than abundance mindset.

When the few women in leadership prioritize maintaining their position over creating access for others, it slows progress for all women. Organizations point to those token women as evidence of equity while systemic barriers remain unchanged.

When women perform solidarity publicly while practicing sabotage privately, it makes genuine allyship harder to recognize and trust. People become cynical about women supporting women because they’ve seen too many examples of that support being conditional, performative, or outright false.

The Accountability We Need

We cannot keep demanding accountability from men in the boardroom while refusing to hold each other accountable in the hallway.

This doesn’t mean women should be perfect. It means we should be honest. About when we’ve protected our comfort over someone else’s advancement. About when we’ve stayed silent to avoid conflict. About when we’ve practiced conditional solidarity that only extended to women who looked like us, talked like us, or didn’t threaten our position.

It means examining our own behavior with the same rigor we apply to men’s. Asking ourselves: Am I advocating for all women or just women who make me comfortable? Am I using my influence to create access or protect my position? Am I showing up in private difficult moments or just public easy ones?

It means calling out harmful behavior from other women, not just from men. Addressing the woman who undermined a colleague, who took credit for someone else’s work, who excluded younger women from opportunities. Naming that behavior as unacceptable regardless of who’s doing it.

What Women’s History Month Should Remind Us

Women’s History Month is a celebration. It is also a mirror. 💫

We celebrate the women who risked everything to advance all women’s rights. The suffragettes (with all their complexity and failures). The labor organizers. The civil rights activists. The women who fought for access to education, to work, to vote, to bodily autonomy.

We should also look in the mirror and ask: Are we extending the same courage they demonstrated? Are we willing to sacrifice comfort for solidarity? Are we creating pathways for women who come after us or protecting positions we’ve finally reached?

The women we celebrate in March were not perfect. They made mistakes, held problematic views, excluded some while fighting for others. We can learn from both their courage and their failures.

Their legacy asks something of us: Will we do the hard, risky, unglamorous work of actually supporting other women? Or will we perform solidarity while practicing self-protection?

The Bottom Line

Being undermined by another woman hurts differently because she knows better. She’s experienced what you’re experiencing. She understands the barriers because she faced them.

When she chooses to maintain those barriers rather than dismantle them, when she protects her position rather than creating pathways, when she performs solidarity publicly while practicing sabotage privately, that betrayal cuts deep.

We can do better. We have to do better.

Real solidarity costs something. It requires sacrifice, discomfort, risk. It means advocating when it’s not convenient, speaking up when it’s not safe, holding doors even when doing so might mean someone else walks through first.

That’s the work. Not the hashtags or the panel appearances or the inspirational posts. The private, costly, unglamorous choice to show up for other women when nobody’s watching.

Women’s History Month celebrates women who made those choices at enormous personal cost. The question for those of us here now: Are we willing to do the same?

The Friendship That Started at a Frat Party

Ryan met Ludwig at a USC frat party in 2007. Ryan was a film student from Oakland with big dreams and no connections. Ludwig was a Swedish grad student who had just moved to America three months earlier and didn’t know a soul in the industry.

They played pool, talked about music, and Ryan asked Ludwig to score his student film.

Ludwig said yes. He’s said yes to every single project since.

When Ryan made his first feature, Fruitvale Station, the budget was tiny and the composer fee was $5,000. Ryan called Ludwig nervous, telling him “You’re too big for this now.” Ludwig had opportunities with bigger budgets, more established directors, safer bets.

Ludwig said yes anyway. That film won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance and changed both of their lives.

Creed. Black Panther. Wakanda Forever. Sinners. Every single one, scored by Ludwig. Every single one, with Michael B. Jordan in front of the camera. Ryan brought his people with him, and they all climbed together.

What Sunday Night Delivered

On Sunday, Sinners took home four Oscars.

Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack, becoming only the sixth Black man in 98 years of the Academy Awards to win the category. He stood at that podium and named them: Sidney Poitier. Denzel Washington. Jamie Foxx. Forest Whitaker. Will Smith. “To be amongst those giants, amongst my ancestors, amongst my gods.” He thanked Ryan for “betting on the culture” and giving him “the space to be seen.”

Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography, shattering a ceiling that had stood for nearly a century. The first woman. The first woman of color. The first person of Filipino and African American descent to ever win the award. She asked every woman in the Dolby Theatre to stand up. “I don’t get here without you guys.”

Ludwig Göransson won Best Original Score, his third Oscar. The man who said yes to a $5,000 student film because he believed in his friend now holds three golden statues for some of the most innovative film scores in recent memory.

Ryan Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, becoming only the second Black writer to ever win the category after Jordan Peele. An original story. Not an adaptation. Not based on existing IP. A film he wrote from imagination, rooted in history, centered on Black characters navigating impossible choices.

The Doubt They Faced Along the Way

This film was doubted from the start. Variety questioned its profitability after a $60 million opening weekend for an original, R-rated horror film. An opening that should have been celebrated became a question mark about whether it would make money.

Critics left it off their year-end lists despite the performances, the cinematography, the score, the screenplay all being exceptional by any measure. Awards season saw it overlooked repeatedly before the Academy finally recognized what audiences knew from opening weekend.

The BAFTAs let a racial slur be broadcast to millions while their cast stood on stage celebrating historic nominations. Even in moments meant to honor their achievement, they faced disrespect.

Through all of it, they kept showing up. They kept winning. They kept proving that original, ambitious, Black-centered storytelling belongs at the highest table and deserves the biggest recognition.

What the Numbers Actually Show

Sinners earned sixteen Oscar nominations, the most in Academy history. More than Titanic. More than La La Land. More than All About Eve. The most nominated film ever made.

It grossed over $360 million worldwide. For an original screenplay. An R-rated horror film. A story about Black twins in the Jim Crow South navigating deals with the devil. Not a sequel, not a franchise, not based on a bestselling novel. Original storytelling that audiences showed up for repeatedly.

It reminded us that when you bet on your people before the world validates them, sometimes you end up holding matching gold statues together.

The Pattern Worth Studying

This is what loyalty looks like in an industry built on transactional relationships and “what have you done for me lately” thinking.

Ryan could have hired bigger-name composers with more Oscar credibility once Black Panther made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors. He could have cast bigger stars than Michael B. Jordan for certain roles. He could have worked with more established cinematographers.

He chose to keep betting on the people who bet on him when he was a film student with a dream. He brought his team with him as he climbed. He created opportunities for them to showcase their brilliance on bigger platforms with larger budgets.

Ludwig could have taken higher-paying gigs instead of scoring a $5,000 student film. He chose friendship and belief in Ryan’s vision over immediate financial gain. That choice compounded into three Oscars and some of the most recognizable film scores of this generation.

Autumn could have waited for “safer” opportunities with more established directors. She chose to trust Ryan’s vision for Sinners, became the first woman to ever win the cinematography Oscar, and shattered a nearly century-old barrier.

Michael B. Jordan could have pursued other leading roles that seemed like easier paths to Oscar recognition. He kept choosing Ryan’s projects, kept trusting his director’s vision, kept showing up for stories about Black life and Black struggle and Black joy.

What This Means Beyond Hollywood

This pattern translates directly to workplace culture and professional relationships.

The people you bet on early, when it costs you something to advocate for them, when choosing them seems risky or unconventional, when others question whether they’re “ready” or “experienced enough” or “the right fit.” Those are the people who remember. The relationships you build based on genuine belief rather than resume credentials create loyalty that transactional relationships never generate. When you choose someone because you see their potential and you’re willing to invest in developing it, that creates bonds that last.

The teams you build by bringing your people with you as you advance create cultures of genuine collaboration. Everyone knows they’re there because someone believed in them, advocated for them, created space for them. That gratitude translates into commitment.

Ryan didn’t just win an Oscar. He won it surrounded by people who’ve been with him since the beginning. People who said yes when saying yes was risky. People who believed in his vision before the world validated it. People who climbed together instead of competing for individual success.

The Bottom Line

They didn’t wait for Hollywood to validate them. They validated each other. 🌻

They built relationships based on belief, loyalty, and genuine respect for each other’s talent. They said yes to each other when others said no. They bet on each other before the world recognized their brilliance. They brought each other along as they climbed rather than leaving anyone behind.

Now they’re standing together holding Oscars, having made the most-nominated film in Academy Awards history, having shattered barriers and set records and proven that original Black storytelling deserves the highest recognition.

That’s what happens when you invest in your people. When you stay loyal. When you bring others with you as you rise. When you validate each other before the world does.

The Historical Blueprint

The suffragette movement fought for women’s right to vote. It also actively excluded Black women from that fight. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton openly used racist arguments to advance white women’s suffrage, arguing that educated white women deserved voting rights more than formerly enslaved Black men. The message was clear from the start: this movement is for some of us. Not all of us.

That blueprint did not disappear. It evolved. Into boardrooms. Into hiring decisions. Into performance reviews. Into feminist spaces that center white women’s experiences and treat women of color as footnotes, diversity statistics to be mentioned but not meaningfully included. 😔

The Pattern in Workplace Cultures

Through my work transforming workplace cultures globally, I have sat across from Black women, Asian women, and Latinas who all told me the same story with different names. The details changed. The pattern never did.

The biggest obstacles in many women of color’s careers have not always been men. They have often been white women who lead with their racial privilege before they ever extend a hand across gender lines.

Women who champion gender equality in company-wide emails while maintaining all-white leadership teams. Who advocate for women’s advancement while consistently promoting white women and overlooking equally qualified women of color. Who speak passionately about breaking glass ceilings while reinforcing concrete floors that keep certain women from even entering the building.

Who build mentorship programs that somehow only benefit women who look like them. Who create sponsorship relationships with women from similar backgrounds. Who advocate fiercely for flexibility and work-life balance for mothers, then question the commitment of women of color who need the same accommodations.

The Gap Between Words and Actions

Recent years have shown this pattern clearly. Women of color consistently vote to protect the rights of all women, including white women. White women as a demographic have repeatedly voted in ways that undermine the safety, rights, and wellbeing of the most marginalized women.

The numbers reveal priorities. When faced with choices that pit racial privilege against gender solidarity, a significant portion of white women choose to protect their racial position over defending all women’s rights.

🌸 You cannot champion feminism on Monday and support policies that harm marginalized women on Tuesday.Feminism isn’t a workplace identity you perform when convenient. It’s a commitment to liberation for all women, even when that liberation costs you something.

🌼 You cannot call yourself an ally and remain silent when policies strip rights from the most vulnerable women.Allyship requires action, not just aesthetic. It means using your privilege to protect women who face compounded discrimination based on race and gender.

🌺 You cannot claim sisterhood while benefiting from a system that keeps other women beneath you. Sisterhood means dismantling hierarchies, not just climbing them while leaving others behind. It means recognizing when your advancement depends on others’ exclusion.

🌷 You cannot center your gender oppression while erasing your racial privilege. Both exist simultaneously. Your experience of sexism is real. Your access to racial privilege is also real. Acknowledging one doesn’t diminish the other.

🥀 Feminism that only works for some women is not feminism. It’s privilege protection with better branding. If your version of women’s liberation consistently leaves out women of color, disabled women, trans women, poor women, immigrant women, it’s not liberation. It’s expansion of access for those already closest to power.

What Accountability Requires

This is not about blame. It’s about accountability. White women are not a monolith. There are white women doing genuine work to dismantle the systems that benefit them at others’ expense. Women using their privilege to create access for those who’ve been excluded. Women recognizing that true liberation requires sacrifice, not just solidarity when it’s comfortable.

This post is not for them.

This post is for the ones who conveniently forget. The ones who remember their womanhood when it serves them and forget their whiteness when acknowledging it would require change. The ones who want solidarity without sacrifice. The ones who expect women of color to show up for gender issues while remaining silent on racial ones. 🫠

The ones who build feminist spaces that feel like white spaces with a diversity statement. Who advocate for women’s leadership while maintaining white leadership. Who champion equal pay while paying women of color less than white women for identical work. Who speak about intersectionality in theory while practicing exclusion in reality.

The Work That Needs to Happen

Real feminism requires white women to hold two truths simultaneously. You experience oppression based on your gender. You experience privilege based on your race. Both are true. Neither cancels the other out.

Your experience of sexism in the workplace is real and valid. Your access to opportunities that women of color don’t receive is also real. Your struggle with work-life balance as a mother is genuine. Your ability to advocate for flexibility without your competence being questioned is a privilege not all mothers share.

Acknowledging racial privilege doesn’t minimize gender oppression. It contextualizes it. It recognizes that while all women face barriers, some women face compounded barriers that require different responses and deeper commitment to dismantle.

This means:

In hiring: Actively working to ensure advancement opportunities reach women of color, not just women who remind you of yourself.

In advocacy: Fighting for policies that protect the most vulnerable women, even when you personally don’t need those protections.

In leadership: Using your position to amplify women of color’s voices, create pathways for their advancement, address systems that exclude them.

In difficult moments: Choosing solidarity with all women over protection of racial privilege, even when that choice costs you comfort or social capital.

In feminism itself: Building movements, organizations, and initiatives that center the most marginalized women rather than treating them as additions to agendas designed around white women’s priorities.

The Bottom Line

The movement cannot keep leaving the same women at the door and calling itself liberation. We deserve better. All of us. ✊🏾

Feminism that excludes becomes another system of oppression with different branding. Another hierarchy with slightly different people at the top but the same people at the bottom. Another promise of equality that somehow always benefits those already closest to power.

True liberation means all women rise together. It means white women sacrifice comfort, convenience, and racial privilege to ensure women of color access the same opportunities. It means building feminism that protects the most vulnerable women first, knowing that policies and practices that work for them will work for everyone.

It means recognizing that womanhood alone doesn’t create solidarity. That shared gender doesn’t erase different racial realities. That feminism requires intersectional analysis, not just gender focus.

This International Women’s Day and every day after, let’s build feminism that actually liberates all women. Not just the ones who were already closest to freedom.

The Gap Isn’t Accidental, It’s Architectural

The gender pay gap is not a mystery. It’s not a pipeline problem. It’s not because women chose softer careers or worked fewer hours. Women are paid 84 cents for every dollar a man earns doing the same job. For Black women it’s 67 cents. For Latinas it’s 58 cents. 📊

The gap is not accidental. It’s architectural. Built into salary structures, negotiation processes, promotion criteria, and compensation philosophies that systematically value women’s contributions less than men’s identical work.

Women are also less likely to negotiate their starting salary. Not because we don’t know our worth. Research tells us women who negotiate are penalized for it. Called aggressive. Difficult. Too much. So we stopped asking. We made ourselves easier to afford.

We gave volume discounts on our expertise. We threw in emotional labor for free. We offered years of institutional knowledge at entry-level prices. We delivered executive results on coordinator salaries and waited patiently to be noticed.

Why the Discount Exists

🌸 The world did not underpay you because your work wasn’t valuable. Your contributions generate measurable results. Your expertise solves real problems. Your leadership drives actual outcomes. The value exists. The compensation doesn’t match it.

🌼 It underpaid you because you were willing to accept what you were offered. Organizations operate on budgets. When someone accepts less than they’re worth, that creates savings. Those savings become expected. The discount becomes standard practice.

🌺 It underpaid you because the alternative was being labeled difficult. Research shows women who negotiate face social penalties men don’t encounter. “She’s demanding.” “She’s not a team player.” “She doesn’t appreciate the opportunity.” The cost of asking became higher than the cost of accepting less.

🌷 It underpaid you because the system was designed to make the discount feel like gratitude. “You should be grateful to be here.” “This is a great opportunity for someone at your level.” “We’re taking a chance on you.” Language that reframes underpayment as generosity, making you feel lucky for the exploitation.

🥀 Some of you are still saying thank you for a salary that should embarrass the person who offered it. Thanking them for the opportunity. Expressing appreciation for being considered. Grateful for a compensation package that’s 30% below market rate for your experience and contribution.

What I See in Organizations Globally

Through my work transforming workplace cultures, I see this pattern everywhere. Women who are the most qualified person in the room, carrying the most responsibility, generating the most results, sitting on the lowest salary.

Not because their organization doesn’t know. Organizations track compensation data. They understand market rates. They see who’s delivering value. They know exactly what they’re paying and what fair compensation would be.

Often they underpay because nobody expected the woman to push back. She accepted the initial offer. She didn’t negotiate aggressively. She seemed grateful for the opportunity. She never asked for the raise she deserved. So the discount continued year after year, compounding into a gap that becomes harder to close over time.

Organizations count on the discount. They build budgets around it. They promote the woman who never asks because she costs less to keep. They praise her as a team player while paying her 25% less than her male counterpart hired six months ago.

That’s not a culture of inclusion. That’s exploitation with good branding. 🌱

The Pattern of Underpayment

Watch how this plays out across a career:

You accept the starting salary without negotiating because you’re grateful for the offer and don’t want to seem difficult. Year one: underpaid by 15%.

You get a 3% annual raise while your responsibilities double. Year two: the gap widens.

A man joins the team at a higher salary despite less experience. You train him. Year three: you’re now doing more work for significantly less pay.

You ask for a raise. You’re told budget is tight. The man you trained gets promoted. Year four: the gap is now structural.

You finally get your promotion. The salary bump brings you almost to where you should have been three years ago. Year five: you’ve lost five years of compounded earnings you’ll never recover.

Multiply this across millions of women. Across entire careers. Across retirement savings that compound based on salary. The discount isn’t just about current pay. It’s about lifetime earnings, retirement security, wealth building, generational transfer of assets.

The discount you accepted at 25 is still costing you at 55.

What International Women’s Day Should Actually Mean

This International Women’s Day, the most powerful thing you can do is stop making yourself affordable.

Not just today. Not just when it’s convenient or when you feel you’ve “earned” the right to ask. Consistently. From the first salary negotiation to every raise discussion to every promotion conversation.

Know your worth. Research market rates for your role, your experience, your contributions. Understand what companies pay for the value you generate. Don’t guess. Know.

Then add tax. Add the years of compounded underpayment you’ve already accepted. Add interest on every idea that was ignored until a man repeated it and received credit. Add a premium for every time you were told you were lucky to be in the room while delivering results that kept the organization functioning.

Add the cost of emotional labor you’ve provided for free. The mentoring, the culture-building, the conflict-smoothing, the team-supporting, the morale-maintaining work that appears nowhere in your job description but everywhere in your workday.

Add the value of institutional knowledge you’ve accumulated. The relationships you’ve built. The processes you’ve improved. The crises you’ve managed. The gaps you’ve filled.

Then send the invoice. Without apology. Without the softener at the end that gives them permission to say no. Without the disclaimer that you’re “just asking” or you “understand if it’s not possible right now.”

The Truth You Need to Hear

You were never the problem. The price was.

Your work has always been worth full value. The world just convinced you to accept less and call it gratitude. Convinced you that asking for fair compensation made you difficult rather than professional. Convinced you that accepting undervaluation made you a team player rather than complicit in your own exploitation.

The discount was never about your worth. It was always about their budget. Their comfort. Their ability to get executive-level results at coordinator-level prices because you were willing to provide them.

Stop providing them.

Know your worth. Add tax. Send the invoice. Without apology.

That’s how we close the gap. One negotiation at a time. One woman at a time refusing to make herself affordable at the expense of her financial security.

Some people thought February 28th was our cue to wrap it up. Pack away the pride. Return to regularly scheduled programming where we’re seen but not too seen, heard but not too loud, successful but not too threatening.

Yeah... that’s not happening. 😂

What This February Delivered

This February has tested us in ways that felt relentless even by the standards we’ve unfortunately become accustomed to.

The highest office in the land posted a video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes. A racial slur was broadcast at the BAFTAs while Black creatives were meant to be celebrating historic wins. Congressman Al Green was physically dragged from the State of the Union for holding a sign that said “Black People Aren’t Apes.” Republicans chanted “USA” as they removed him. We lost Rev. Jesse Jackson, a giant who marched with King and kept hope alive for generations.

All of that in 28 days. The shortest month of the year delivered the longest list of reminders that our humanity is still up for debate in certain rooms and spaces.

What This Month Actually Revealed

This month reminded us why we can’t afford to shrink. Why visibility matters more than comfort. Why taking up space isn’t vanity, it’s survival.

Every attack was confirmation that our presence still unsettles people. Our excellence still threatens systems built on our exclusion. Our refusal to shrink still disrupts the comfortable hierarchies some people desperately want to maintain.

Which means our presence is paramount. Our visibility is essential. Our refusal to disappear is exactly what’s needed.

When they work this hard to silence us, dehumanize us, remove us from spaces, it tells you everything about how powerful our presence actually is. You don’t attack what doesn’t threaten you. You don’t try to erase what doesn’t matter.

Why Black Excellence Isn’t Seasonal

Black excellence isn’t seasonal. It doesn’t need a designated month to exist. It doesn’t require permission from corporate diversity calendars or approval from DEI departments.

It just is. Every single day.

We don’t turn it on in February and turn it off in March. We don’t shrink our brilliance to fit into the 28-day window that makes others comfortable.

Black excellence is the doctor saving lives in April. The engineer solving problems in July. The teacher shaping minds in October. The artist creating beauty in December. The entrepreneur building wealth in every month. The parent raising brilliant children year-round. The professional excelling at work regardless of what the calendar says.

To Everyone Who Made It Through

To every Black professional who code-switched through corporate February while watching the news in disbelief. To every Black creative who celebrated wins while processing pain. To every Black person who had to explain, again, why these things hurt.

You made it through. You survived another February that demanded resilience we shouldn’t have to summon but do anyway because we have no choice.

Where We Go From Here

Now we keep going. Unapologetically. Loudly. Taking up every inch of space we deserve.

They played in our faces last month. They tested whether we’d shrink, whether we’d be silent, whether we’d accept dehumanization quietly.

It didn’t work. It’s never worked. It never will.

We’re still here. We’re still rising. We’re still excelling. We’re still creating. We’re still building. We’re still refusing to shrink ourselves to fit into spaces that were never designed to include us.

Let’s continue to be Blackity Black Black in 2026 and beyond. 🙌🏾

Not just in February. Not just during designated months or approved moments. Always. Constantly. Without apology.

The Workplace Application

For those navigating professional spaces, this means not code-switching back to “normal” now that February is over. Not returning to the version of yourself that makes others comfortable. Not shrinking your excellence because someone finds it threatening.

It means continuing to name racism when you see it, not just during Black History Month but in March budget meetings, April strategy sessions, July performance reviews.

It means refusing to let your presence become seasonal. You don’t exist less in months without heritage celebrations. Your perspective doesn’t matter less when there’s no DEI initiative highlighting it.

It means taking up space consistently. Speaking up in meetings year-round. Challenging decisions that harm Black employees regardless of what month it is. Demanding equity constantly, not just when it’s trendy.

The Bottom Line

Black History Month is over. Black excellence is not.

Our humanity doesn’t expire on February 28th. Our right to dignity doesn’t pause until next February. Our refusal to accept dehumanization doesn’t take breaks for the convenience of those who’d prefer we stay quiet.

They thought giving us 28 days would contain us. Would convince us to perform Blackness on schedule then shrink it the rest of the year.

They were wrong.

We’re here. Unapologetically. Taking up space. Refusing to shrink. Demanding dignity. Celebrating excellence. Building power. Creating beauty. Excelling professionally. Raising brilliant children. Contributing to communities. Changing systems.

Not just in February. Always.

They can keep testing us. We’ll keep rising. That’s what we do. That’s what we’ve always done. That’s what we’ll continue doing regardless of how hard they work to stop us.

Michael B. Jordan said it perfectly at the NAACP Image Awards: “Man, I love being Black.”

Same, Michael. Same.

We’re going to keep loving it loudly, proudly, unapologetically for the rest of this year and every year after. 🙌🏾

Let that sink in. Two Black actors. On stage. At British cinema’s biggest night. Having a racial slur hurled at them in front of their peers and broadcast to millions. 😔

Davidson has Tourette Syndrome, a neurological condition that causes involuntary tics including vocal outbursts, and the audience had been warned beforehand that outbursts could occur during the ceremony. Host Alan Cumming addressed the moment by asking for “understanding” and reminding viewers that Tourette’s is a disability. He apologized to the audience for any offense caused.

The audience. Not Michael B. Jordan. Not Delroy Lindo. Not the two Black men who had to stand on that stage, compose themselves, and continue presenting as if a racial slur hadn’t just been shouted at them on live television.

Multiple Truths Can Exist Simultaneously

I want to be clear: I have deep compassion for people living with Tourette’s. This is a neurological condition that causes real distress, involuntary movements and vocalizations that people cannot control. Those who live with it deserve understanding, accommodation, and full inclusion in public life. John Davidson has spent years campaigning for Tourette’s awareness and acceptance, and I honor that work and the courage it takes to advocate publicly while living with a condition that’s frequently misunderstood.

Multiple truths can exist at the same time.

Black people can have empathy for someone with a disability AND still feel the sting of hearing that word shouted at two Black men on a global stage. We can extend grace to someone whose condition causes involuntary outbursts AND acknowledge that being subjected to racial slurs, regardless of intent, causes harm. We can support disability inclusion AND question whether true inclusion means one group’s accommodation comes at the cost of another group’s dignity.

This isn’t about choosing sides. This is about recognizing that both communities deserve consideration, protection, and dignity. The challenge is figuring out how to honor both simultaneously rather than defaulting to the assumption that one group’s needs must automatically override another’s harm.

The Decisions That Reveal Priorities

Here’s what’s troubling me: the ceremony wasn’t broadcast live. The BBC had a two-hour delay before it aired to the public, which means producers had every opportunity to edit the moment out if they chose to.

I watched both the original ceremony footage and the broadcast version. They edited out someone saying “Free Palestine” earlier in the show, demonstrating they were actively making editorial choices about what was acceptable for viewers to hear and what needed to be removed.

The N-word directed at Black actors made the cut. That decision deserves serious scrutiny.

Someone in that production booth decided that protecting viewers from hearing a political statement warranted editing, but protecting Black actors and Black viewers from a racial slur did not. That choice reveals something about whose dignity gets prioritized and whose gets treated as acceptable collateral damage in the name of inclusion.

When Accommodation Becomes Harm

I want to be extremely careful here because this is delicate territory. Disability accommodation is essential. People with Tourette’s deserve to participate fully in public life without being excluded because their condition causes involuntary outbursts. John Davidson absolutely had the right to be at the BAFTAs as a subject of a nominated film.

The question isn’t whether he should have been there. The question is what responsibility organizers have when accommodating one person’s disability creates harm for others.

If organizers knew involuntary slurs were possible, what duty did they have to the people who might be subjected to them? Warning the audience that outbursts could occur doesn’t protect the targets of those outbursts. It just prepares bystanders to witness harm without addressing the harm itself.

What would true accommodation have looked like? Perhaps seating arrangements that minimized the possibility of slurs being directed at presenters. Perhaps a plan for how to respond if it happened that centered the people harmed, not just the audience’s comfort. Perhaps not broadcasting the moment when they had the editorial control to prevent it.

What we got instead was an apology to the audience for being offended, while the two men who were actually targeted received nothing. That reveals who the organizers considered deserving of care in that moment.

The Response That Compounds the Harm

I’ve seen the online discourse, and it’s been deeply troubling. Calling Black people “ableist” or “uneducated” for expressing hurt at this moment is exactly the pattern we’ve seen play out globally. The expectation that Black people should simply absorb racism quietly so that others don’t feel uncomfortable is not allyship. It’s a demand that we make ourselves smaller, silence our pain, and prioritize everyone else’s comfort over our own dignity.

This is what happens when we treat accommodation as a zero-sum game where one group’s inclusion requires another group’s silence about harm. When expressing hurt at being called a racial slur gets you labeled as attacking someone with a disability rather than simply naming your own experience.

Black people are allowed to say “that word causes us harm regardless of why it was said” without that being an attack on people with Tourette’s. Those two things can coexist. One community’s need for accommodation doesn’t erase another community’s right to name when they’ve been harmed.

What True Compassion Requires

True compassion is not selective. It doesn’t ask us to choose which community deserves dignity and which community should absorb harm for the greater good.

We can hold space for disability and still acknowledge that Black people should not have to endure racial slurs, intentional or not, as part of someone else’s inclusion. Both communities deserve dignity. Both deserve protection. Both deserve to participate fully in public life without having to sacrifice their wellbeing for it.

The goal should never be choosing one over the other. The goal should be figuring out how to honor both simultaneously. How to accommodate disability without making other marginalized communities absorb preventable harm in the process.

That requires creativity, intentionality, and a genuine commitment to protecting everyone involved rather than defaulting to the assumption that some people’s dignity is expendable in service of others’ accommodation.

What Should Have Happened

Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo should have received a direct apology. Not a general statement to the audience about understanding disability. A specific acknowledgment that they were subjected to a racial slur on stage and that the organizers recognize the harm that caused regardless of intent.

The BBC should explain why they chose to broadcast that moment when they had the editorial control to remove it. What standard are they applying that makes “Free Palestine” unacceptable for broadcast but a racial slur directed at Black presenters acceptable? That decision-making process needs transparency and accountability.

The conversation about disability accommodation and racial harm should happen with nuance that allows both truths to exist. We should be able to discuss how to include people with Tourette’s in public events while also addressing what responsibility organizers have when that inclusion creates harm for others. Those aren’t competing priorities. They’re interconnected challenges that require thoughtful solutions.

The Bottom Line

John Davidson deserves to participate in public life. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo deserve not to be subjected to racial slurs. Both of those statements are true. Both of those needs matter. 💔

We can do better than forcing communities to choose between accommodation and dignity. We can do better than expecting Black people to silently absorb racial slurs to prove they’re not ableist. We can do better than apologizing to audiences while ignoring the people actually harmed.

True inclusion means figuring out how everyone participates with dignity intact. Not deciding whose dignity is expendable in service of someone else’s access.

That’s the work. It’s complicated. It requires nuance, creativity, and genuine commitment to protecting everyone rather than defaulting to hierarchy of whose harm matters more.

We have to do it anyway. Because both communities deserve better than what happened at the BAFTAs.

This Black History Month, Sesame Street partnered with Dove to educate children about the history behind cornrows, box braids, Bantu knots, and other iconic Black hairstyles. The images are stunning. A muppet in box braids explaining how the style dates back thousands of years to Africa. Another in Zulu knots, teaching kids that the raised style was considered closer to the heavens. Cornrows described as one of the oldest hairstyles in history, dating back to 3000 BC. 🧡

This is representation that plants seeds. When children learn early that their hair is normal, beautiful, and worthy of celebration, they carry that confidence into classrooms and eventually boardrooms. They internalize that their natural texture isn’t something to hide, straighten, or apologize for. They understand their hair carries history, culture, and meaning far deeper than aesthetics.

The Gap Between What We Teach and What We Allow

Here’s the problem: the world hasn’t caught up.

Nearly 90% of Black youth report experiencing hair discrimination by age 12. Before they’re even teenagers, before they’ve had a chance to fully develop their sense of self, they’ve already learned that society views their natural hair as a problem to be managed rather than beauty to be celebrated.

Black students make up just 15% of the US public school population yet account for 45% of all suspensions related to hair dress code violations. Think about that disparity. Black children are being removed from learning environments at wildly disproportionate rates for the crime of wearing their hair naturally.

In 2024, a Texas judge dismissed Darryl George’s discrimination case after he was suspended for years for wearing locs. Years. A child lost years of education, years of normal school experience, years of being able to just exist as a student, because administrators decided his hair violated dress code. 😤

The message sent to Black children is clear and devastating: Your hair as it grows from your head is unacceptable in educational spaces. To access learning, you must alter yourself. Your natural state violates rules designed without you in mind.

The Workplace Continues the Pattern

The workplace isn’t much better. In fact, it often reinforces what schools started.

Black women’s hair is 2.5 times more likely to be perceived as “unprofessional” compared to other hair textures. Not because there’s anything inherently unprofessional about natural Black hair, but because professional standards were created around European hair textures and anything different gets coded as inappropriate.

Two thirds of Black women change their hair for job interviews. They straighten it, wear wigs, braid it down and cover it, do whatever’s necessary to present a version of themselves they believe will be acceptable to interviewers who might see natural Black hair as a barrier to employment.

80% of Black women feel pressure to alter their natural hair just to fit in at work. That’s not occasional discomfort. That’s the vast majority of Black women in workplaces understanding that showing up authentically comes with professional consequences they can’t afford.

The Contradiction We’re Teaching Children

We’re teaching children their crowns are beautiful while punishing them for wearing them.

Sesame Street tells a five-year-old that her Bantu knots connect her to thousands of years of African tradition and bring her closer to the heavens. Then she goes to school and gets sent home for violating dress code. The cognitive dissonance is cruel.

We celebrate Black hair in February during carefully curated educational moments while policing it the other eleven months of the year in classrooms and workplaces. We teach children about the rich cultural history of cornrows while suspending students who wear them. We praise the beauty and significance of locs in diversity programming while firing employees who refuse to cut them.

The message becomes: Your hair is beautiful in theory, acceptable in controlled contexts like Black History Month celebrations, but inappropriate for daily life in schools and professional settings.

Where Policy Lags Behind Progress

27 states have passed the CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) to protect against hair discrimination. That’s meaningful progress. Those are 27 states where legal protection exists, where Black people can challenge workplace and school policies that discriminate based on hair texture and style.

The federal version? Passed the House twice. Blocked by the Senate twice. Just reintroduced last month.

So in 23 states, hair discrimination remains perfectly legal. Employers can refuse to hire you, schools can suspend you, organizations can exclude you, all based on how your hair naturally grows from your head or how you choose to style it in ways that honor your culture.

The legislative process reveals how slowly institutional change moves compared to cultural awareness. We have major corporations partnering with beloved children’s programs to celebrate Black hair. We have widespread understanding that natural Black hair is beautiful and discrimination against it is wrong. Yet we can’t get federal protection passed despite multiple attempts.

Why the Sesame Street Partnership Still Matters

So yes, celebrate Sesame Street for getting it right. This partnership matters immensely.

Celebrate Dove for investing in cultural education, not just diversity marketing. For using their platform to teach millions of children accurate history about Black hairstyles rather than just selling products. For recognizing that representation in children’s media plants seeds that grow into adults who understand beauty comes in many textures.

This kind of early education shapes how the next generation sees Black hair. Children who grow up learning that cornrows carry thousands of years of history won’t find them unprofessional as adults. Kids who understand Bantu knots have cultural and spiritual significance won’t code them as inappropriate in workplace dress codes.

Representation in media creates cultural shift that policy eventually follows. When enough people understand that discrimination against Black hair is absurd, harmful, and rooted in racism rather than legitimate professional standards, legislative change becomes inevitable.

The Work That Remains

It also reminds us how far we still have to go.

Representation in media is a seed. It plants ideas, shapes perspectives, creates possibility for children who see themselves reflected positively. That matters. Those seeds grow into adults with different expectations, different standards, different understanding of what’s acceptable and what’s discrimination.

Policy is the soil. Without it, seeds can’t take root properly. Without legal protection, cultural awareness doesn’t translate to actual safety for Black people wearing their hair naturally. Without the CROWN Act, Sesame Street can celebrate Black hair all it wants while Black children still get suspended for wearing it.

We need both. Seeds without soil don’t grow into lasting change. Soil without seeds sits empty, unused potential. Together, they create the conditions where Black hair can be celebrated in February programming AND protected in March disciplinary policies. Where children learn their hair is beautiful AND never face consequences for wearing it that way. 🌱

The Bottom Line

Sesame Street is teaching millions of children that Black hair is beautiful, culturally significant, and worthy of celebration. That’s meaningful progress that will shape how the next generation thinks about natural Black hair.

Schools are still suspending Black students for wearing that beautiful, culturally significant hair. Workplaces are still pressuring Black employees to alter it. 23 states still have no legal protection against hair discrimination.

Both things are true. We celebrate the representation while acknowledging it’s not enough. We appreciate the cultural shift while demanding the policy change that protects people in the meantime.

Because right now, Black children are learning their hair is a crown while institutions keep telling them crowns aren’t allowed in classrooms or conference rooms.

That contradiction needs to end. Not eventually. Not after more studies or more awareness campaigns or more Black History Month partnerships.

Now. Through federal CROWN Act passage. Through school policy reform. Through workplace dress codes that actually reflect the diversity they claim to celebrate.

Until then, we’ll keep celebrating Sesame Street for planting seeds while fighting for the soil that lets those seeds actually grow into justice.

Bad Bunny had options. He could have used those 13 minutes to rage. He could have pointed fingers. He could have delivered the controversy his critics were salivating for, gift-wrapped with a bow.

Instead, Benito gave us something they never saw coming: pure, unfiltered celebration. 🥳

A Love Letter Written in Spanish

The football field transformed into Puerto Rico’s sugarcane fields, complete with jíbaros in their traditional pava hats. Lady Gaga sang a salsa remix of “Die With A Smile.” Ricky Martin appeared. Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Cardi B, and Karol G danced in La Casita. The celebration was so joyful, so full of life, that a real couple even got married on live television during the halftime show. 💒

This wasn’t a protest. It was a love letter to his people, written in Spanish, sealed with salsa, and delivered to the entire world.

For 13 glorious minutes, Benito reminded over 130 million viewers that Latino culture isn’t something to tolerate or debate. It IS American culture. It has been for centuries. The sugarcane, the music, the community, the joy—all of it woven into the fabric of this nation whether some people like it or not. 💃🏾

He didn’t ask for permission. He didn’t translate for comfort. He didn’t shrink his culture to fit someone else’s expectations of what belongs on that stage. He showed up fully, completely, unapologetically himself and trusted that his presence had value exactly as it was.

That’s not just performance. That’s power.

The Moment That Gave Me Goosebumps

The moment that gave me actual chills? When he shouted “God Bless America” then named every country across the Americas. Ecuador. Haiti. El Salvador. Jamaica. Honduras. Guatemala. Dominican Republic. Nicaragua. Mexico. The United States. Canada. Puerto Rico.

He held up a football that read “Together, we are America.”

The jumbotron lit up with words that felt both revolutionary and obvious: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”

No anger. No finger-pointing. No responding to critics with the energy they wanted to provoke. Just radical, unapologetic joy in the face of people who wanted him to fail, wanted him to be smaller, wanted him to perform in a language that wasn’t his own.

He chose celebration over confrontation. Love over rage. Fullness over shrinking. And in doing so, he demonstrated something far more powerful than any protest could have been in that moment.

What This Teaches Us About Belonging

Here’s what I need leaders to understand: Bad Bunny showed us what true belonging looks like.

He didn’t shrink himself to fit the space. He didn’t code-switch to make others comfortable. He didn’t apologize for taking up room on America’s biggest stage. He didn’t translate his identity into something more palatable for people who wanted him to be less Puerto Rican, less Spanish-speaking, less himself.

He simply existed in his fullness and invited everyone to the party. He trusted that showing up authentically would create connection rather than division. He bet on celebration instead of conformity. And 130 million people showed up for it.

That’s the energy we desperately need in our workplaces.

What Workplaces Get Wrong About Belonging

Most organizations approach belonging completely backward. They ask people to assimilate. To fit. To code-switch. To leave parts of themselves at the door so others feel comfortable. To translate their identity into something the dominant culture can digest without discomfort.

They call this “culture fit” and pretend it’s about shared values when it’s actually about conformity. About making people smaller so they don’t disrupt the comfortable homogeneity that’s always existed.

Real belonging doesn’t ask people to shrink. It doesn’t demand translation. It doesn’t require performance of a version of yourself that makes others comfortable while exhausting you.

Real belonging looks like what Bad Bunny did on that stage: showing up fully as yourself and trusting that your presence adds value exactly as you are. Not despite your difference, but because of the unique perspective, experience, and energy you bring that nobody else can.

That’s not assimilation. That’s celebration. The radical act of existing in your fullness and inviting others to witness, appreciate, and learn from it rather than asking you to minimize it.

The Workplace Application

Imagine workplaces where people could show up like Bad Bunny showed up on that stage. Where your cultural background, your language, your traditions, your identity didn’t need to be checked at the door or performed in ways that make others comfortable.

Where a Puerto Rican employee could bring the fullness of their experience to strategy discussions without translating it into corporate-approved language first. Where code-switching wasn’t a survival skill but an unnecessary relic of assimilationist culture.

Where someone could say “this is who I am, this is what I bring, this is the value I add” without having to shrink, explain, justify, or apologize for taking up space.

That’s when innovation actually happens. When people bring their whole selves, their unique perspectives, their different ways of thinking and problem-solving. When organizations stop demanding conformity and start celebrating what each person’s distinct identity and experience contributes to the collective.

Bad Bunny didn’t make the Super Bowl halftime show less American by performing in Spanish. He made it more American by demonstrating the reality of what America actually is: a place where Latino culture has always been woven into the fabric, where Spanish has always been spoken, where Puerto Rican traditions have always existed alongside every other cultural contribution.

He just refused to pretend otherwise for comfort’s sake.

Why This Matters Beyond One Performance

It’s still Black History Month, and watching a Latino artist claim space on America’s biggest stage while honoring his roots reminds me that our liberation is tied together.

When one of us rises without having to shrink, it creates permission for all of us to do the same. When someone demonstrates that belonging doesn’t require assimilation, it shifts what’s possible for everyone who’s been performing versions of themselves to survive in spaces that weren’t designed for them.

Bad Bunny’s performance wasn’t just about Latino representation, though that matters immensely. It was about what becomes possible when anyone shows up fully as themselves and refuses to apologize for it.

That’s the model for workplace transformation. Not diversity programs that ask people to be diverse in comfortable ways. Not inclusion initiatives that include people as long as they don’t disrupt the status quo. Real cultural change that celebrates people’s fullness and understands that’s where the actual value lives.

The Bottom Line

Over 130 million people watched Bad Bunny perform entirely in Spanish at the Super Bowl. They witnessed jíbaros and salsa and La Casita and a love letter to Puerto Rico delivered without translation or apology.

Some people were uncomfortable with it. Some people wished he’d performed in English or chosen different imagery or made it more palatable for mainstream America.

He didn’t. And that’s exactly why it mattered.

He showed us what belonging actually looks like. Not shrinking. Not translating. Not apologizing. Just showing up fully as yourself and trusting that your presence has value exactly as it is.

That’s the energy we need in workplaces. That’s what real culture transformation requires. That’s what happens when we stop asking people to fit and start celebrating what they bring.

When one of us rises in fullness, we all rise. ✊🏾

I stood on that red circle and asked the question I’ve been turning over in my head for years: Why are we so obsessed with owning culture when culture only truly thrives when we participate in it together?

What the Talk Explores

This talk explores what happens when we treat culture as property versus conversation. When we approach culture as something to own, control, and police rather than something we create together through genuine participation and contribution.

I share stories from my own journey navigating identity between two worlds (Lagos-born, West London-raised, now living in New York). The experience of never quite fitting neatly into anyone’s boxes. The exhaustion of code-switching. The performance required to belong in spaces that weren’t designed for someone like me.

I offer practical shifts for creating workplaces where people don’t have to perform belonging. Where culture becomes something everyone contributes to rather than something certain people gatekeep. Where difference gets celebrated as strength rather than managed as problem.

Why This Moment Feels Surreal

I won’t lie, seeing myself on that TEDx stage still feels surreal. Little Biddy from West London really did that. 🥹

The girl who grew up between cultures, never quite “Nigerian enough” for some spaces and never quite “British enough” for others, stood on a stage and talked about why that in-between space matters. Why the question of who owns culture is the wrong question entirely.

The woman who spent years helping organizations transform their cultures while navigating her own complex identity got to share what she’s learned about belonging, participation, and what actually makes culture thrive.

That journey from feeling like I didn’t belong anywhere to standing on a TEDx stage talking about how we all belong when we stop policing who gets to participate? That’s everything.

Who This Talk Is For

Because culture doesn’t belong to anyone. It belongs to everyone who participates in creating it. That’s the whole point.

When we stop asking “who owns culture?” and start asking “who gets to contribute to culture?”, everything changes. Workplaces transform. Teams thrive. People bring their full selves. Innovation happens. Belonging becomes real instead of performed.

Shaboozey said “immigrants built this country” at the Grammys on Sunday. The loudest backlash didn’t come from white America. It came from Black America.

Let’s discuss what actually happened.

Shaboozey, the son of Nigerian immigrants, stood on that Grammy stage with tears in his eyes and dedicated his first ever win to his mother and to immigrants who came to this country seeking opportunity. It was emotional, it was personal, and it was clearly spoken from the heart of a man honoring the woman who raised him. 🏆

The Important Correction

Was the wording perfect? No. Bernice King, Dr. King’s daughter, offered an important distinction: enslaved Africans were not immigrants. They didn’t come seeking opportunity. They arrived in chains, were bred like cattle, and forced to build an empire with their bare hands while being treated as property rather than people.

That history should never be diminished or folded into a neat “immigrants” umbrella. The distinction between people who chose to come to America seeking better lives and people who were stolen from their homelands and forced into generational bondage matters profoundly. She’s right, and that correction is historically essential.

Where Nuance Gets Lost

Here’s where I need us to apply some critical thinking though. 🤔

Watch the speech. This was a man overwhelmed with emotion, honoring his mother on the biggest night of his career. His voice broke. His eyes filled with tears. He was speaking from a place of profound gratitude and love for the woman who sacrificed everything to give him opportunities.

Anyone with critical thinking skills and a functioning heart can see he wasn’t trying to erase Black American history or diminish the horrors of enslavement. He was a son honoring his mother in a moment of overwhelming achievement. The semantics and syntax of a tearful acceptance speech delivered under intense emotion and pressure shouldn’t outweigh the message he was clearly trying to convey about gratitude and opportunity.

Bernice King’s correction was important and necessary. The historical distinction matters. Those two things can coexist with grace for an imperfect moment.

Yet instead of extending that grace to a fellow Black man while also educating about historical accuracy, the response has been vicious.

When Correction Becomes Condemnation

The xenophobia that has poured out of Black American spaces toward Shaboozey specifically for being Nigerian-American has been absolutely disgusting. 😤

Not thoughtful correction about language. Not educational context about the difference between immigration and enslavement. Vicious attacks on his identity, his right to claim Blackness, his legitimacy as an artist in a genre with deep Black American roots.

Black Americans distancing themselves from Africans as though suffering is a competition with a ranking system. As though being descended from enslaved people makes you more authentically Black than being the child of African immigrants. As though there are tiers to Blackness and some of us belong on a higher shelf while others don’t quite measure up.

As though pain can be quantified and whoever suffered most gets to determine who belongs and who doesn’t.

This creates hierarchies within community that serve absolutely no one except those who benefit from our division. It positions different Black experiences against each other rather than recognizing how different forms of oppression, displacement, and struggle all stem from the same systems of white supremacy that continue harming all of us.

The Timing Makes It Worse

We took what should have been a glorious, celebratory moment for a Black artist winning in a historically white genre and turned it into us versus them. A young Black man achieving recognition in country music (a genre built on Black musical traditions that were stolen, whitewashed, and gatekept for generations) deserved celebration.

On the first day of Black History Month. During a political climate where Black and brown communities are under real threat from policies actively targeting immigrants, undermining civil rights protections, and emboldening hatred.

This is when we chose to fracture over imperfect wording in an emotional acceptance speech.

Our oppressors don’t even need to do the work anymore. We’re dividing ourselves voluntarily, publicly, and enthusiastically over a Grammy speech while every other community watches our dysfunction and uses it as evidence that we can’t unify, can’t support each other, can’t build collective power. 🫠

What Holding Both Truths Looks Like

Shaboozey didn’t diminish your ancestors. He honored his mother. Both of those statements are true simultaneously.

Enslaved Africans were not immigrants. Shaboozey’s mother is an immigrant. Both of those historical realities exist without canceling each other out.

The language could have been more precise. The emotion and intent were genuine and beautiful. Both observations are valid.

We can correct historical inaccuracy while also celebrating achievement. We can demand precision in language while also extending grace for imperfect moments. We can educate about the difference between enslavement and immigration while also recognizing that a son honoring his mother on stage wasn’t attempting erasure.

If we can’t hold multiple truths at the same time, if we can’t correct the language while also celebrating the moment, if we can’t build each other up while also demanding accuracy, then we have far bigger problems than one acceptance speech.

The Workplace Culture Parallel

This dynamic shows up constantly in organizational spaces too. When someone from a marginalized group achieves something or speaks imperfectly about shared experiences, watch how quickly their own community tears them down for not representing everyone perfectly.

The employee who gets promoted and celebrates their achievement gets attacked for not acknowledging everyone else who didn’t get promoted. The person who speaks about their experience gets corrected viciously for not including every other experience. The individual success becomes community failure because it wasn’t expressed with perfect precision that captures everyone’s reality.

Meanwhile, those outside the community watch this infighting and use it as evidence that “those people” can’t work together, can’t support each other, can’t be trusted in leadership because they’re too busy policing each other to build anything sustainable.

Strong communities, whether cultural or organizational, make space for both correction and celebration. They can say “the language could be better AND we’re proud of you.” They can demand accuracy AND extend grace for human imperfection. They can educate AND elevate simultaneously.

Weak communities make people choose. Either you’re perfect in your representation or you’re the enemy. Either you capture everyone’s experience with precision or you’ve betrayed the collective. Either you speak flawlessly under pressure or you deserve to be destroyed publicly.

That approach doesn’t build community. It ensures nobody takes risks, nobody celebrates openly, nobody achieves anything without fear of being torn down by the very people who should be supporting them.

The Bottom Line

Get your house in order, family. We have real enemies. Real threats. Real systems actively working to dismantle the progress generations fought for. Real policies targeting our communities. Real dangers that require collective response and unified resistance.

Shaboozey isn’t one of them. ✊🏾

A young Black man honoring his immigrant mother while winning a Grammy in a genre that wouldn’t exist without Black Americans isn’t your enemy. He’s someone who could have been celebrated and gently educated in the same breath.

We can do better than this. We have to do better than this. Because the alternative is watching ourselves fragment into irrelevance while our actual oppressors don’t have to lift a finger.

Build each other up. Demand accuracy. Hold both truths. Extend grace while educating. Celebrate achievement while correcting language.

That’s how strong communities operate. That’s how we survive and thrive despite systems designed to destroy us. That’s how we honor both the enslaved ancestors who built this country in chains AND the immigrant parents who came seeking the opportunities those ancestors never had.

Both stories matter. Both histories deserve recognition. Both experiences shaped the Black excellence standing on that Grammy stage.

We’re better than this division. Now we need to act like it.

You could exceed every target, deliver every project on time, and solve problems nobody else could crack. You could be the person everyone on your team relies on for expertise. You could generate measurable value that directly impacts organizational success.

None of it matters if the person holding the pen doesn’t particularly warm to you, or worse, barely knows what you do between January and December.

Meanwhile, someone else coasts through the year producing mediocre work but they grab coffee with the right people, laugh at the right jokes, and show up to the optional happy hours. They’re visible in the ways that count even when their output doesn’t. Guess whose review glows brighter?

The Exception That Proves the Rule

Now, I’m not speaking in absolutes here. Some managers are deeply connected to their team’s work, take evaluation seriously, and genuinely understand what excellence looks like in your specific role. They track your contributions throughout the year. They recognize nuance. They separate their personal feelings from professional assessment.

If that’s your manager, hold onto them. 🙌🏾

For the rest? Let’s be honest with ourselves about what’s actually happening.

What Reviews Actually Measure

Most performance systems aren’t measuring output. They’re measuring likability filtered through limited observation, wrapped in language that sounds objective but rarely is.

Your manager sees maybe 10% of your actual work. They’re not in the meetings where you solve complex problems. They’re not watching you navigate difficult stakeholder relationships. They’re not present for the hundred small decisions you make that keep projects moving. They’re not witnessing the expertise you deploy daily.

They’re evaluating you based on fragments, impressions, and how you made them feel in the moments they happened to be paying attention. That’s not a performance review. That’s a popularity contest with a corporate template.

Think about what your manager actually observes: Your presence or absence in meetings they attend. How you communicate in the channels they monitor. Whether you respond quickly to their messages. How you make them feel in one-on-one conversations. Whether you agree with them or push back. How comfortable they are around you.

None of those things directly correlate with job performance. They correlate with interpersonal chemistry and visibility. With being the kind of employee who’s easy to manage rather than the kind who delivers exceptional results.

The Patterns Nobody Acknowledges

🌸 The employee who promotes their work loudly gets rated higher than the one who delivers quietly. Self-promotion becomes more valuable than actual accomplishment. The person who constantly updates leadership on their progress gets recognized. The person who just does brilliant work without fanfare gets overlooked.

🌼 The employee who mirrors their manager’s style gets “culture fit” points the different thinker never receives.Similarity breeds comfort. Managers rate employees who remind them of themselves more favorably. Different communication styles, different problem-solving approaches, different ways of thinking all get coded as “not quite right” rather than valuable diversity.

🌺 The employee with face time gets opportunities the remote worker never hears about. Physical proximity creates perception of engagement, commitment, and contribution that remote work doesn’t generate in managers’ minds. The person in the office gets considered for projects. The person delivering identical results from home gets forgotten.

🌷 The employee who challenges ideas gets marked as “difficult” while the agreeable one gets marked as “leadership potential.” Critical thinking becomes a liability.
