It's The "I Of The Tiger"

When CW reader Jamie ordered a birthday cake for her husband Jim Bob, she encountered one of the funniest dilemmas I've seen yet - and that is really saying something.

The problem?

Her baker had never heard of the letter J:

Image

And apparently thinks Birt and Hday are two separate words.

(Give it a minute.)

(Theeeere it is.)

Um....

Image

Any guesses?
Anyone? Anyone?
Bueller?

Two of the most misspelled words I see on cakes are "congratulations" and "confirmation." So when someone is foolish enough to order a "Congratulations on your confirmation" cake, HILARITY WILL ENSUE:

Image

Thank goodness the baker made up for it with all those great decorations.

Wrecky minion Tabatha was having a bad day, so she decided to swing by the discount rack at the bakery for a little pick-me-up. Then she asked the baker to write "Eye of the Tiger" on it, since we all know that's the best song for a bad day training montage. (I'm picturing slo-mo clips of rampant toe-stubbing, pink slip shredding, and bad haircut reaction shots.)

Anyway, as it turned out, Tabatha got an even bigger pick-me-up than she bargained for:

Image

Greetings, from We of the Turkeys!

And finally, when it comes to baseball bats, this baker is ALL THUMB:

Image

NAILED IT.

Thanks to Jamie, Ashley R., Sandi M., Tabitha G., & Amanda F. for knowing something was wrong with that last wreck, but not quite putting her finger on it.

P.S. Since we're talking about a variety of sizes, let me give a quick shout-out my favorite wire-free bra. I have three of these - just bought a fourth today! - and they're all I've been wearing lately:

Image

Warner's Easy Does It Seamless Wireless Bra

Up 'til last year I ONLY wore wired bras - usually Warners - and it took buying-and-returning over a dozen different brands and styles before I found a wireless one I liked. This one averages $25-30 Prime, but I watch the listing and buy any color that goes on sale for less than $20. Today "Lilac" is on sale for $18, so I just snagged one of those.

I love the under-arm smoothing panel - no dig or pinch! - and like most Warners, these are incredibly comfortable. Be sure to check the image gallery for a better idea of how they look on larger tracts of land.

Happy July, fellow Sweets lovers!

With America's Independence Day this weekend, you know I had to find some pretty red, white, and blue numbers:

Image

(By Sugar Hero, who has a complete tutorial on her site)

Plus this one has a drool-worthy surprise inside!

Image

WOWIE. Our flag has never looked more delicious.

And look how sweet this old-fashioned bunting is:

Image

(By Wild Orchid Baking Company in New Hampshire, now closed)

Ahhh, but I have some goodies for my non-American friends, too. Check it out, rainbow fireworks!

Image

(By Victorious Cupcakes in the UK)

So pretty! I like the abstract take on them, and the silhouettes are perfect.

I love the way Glory (yes, her name is Glory!) took these ice cream cookies:

Image

...and stacked them to look like triple-deckers!

Image

(By Glorious Treats, online only)

SO CUTE.

Oooh, I may have spoken too soon on that last flag cake; this one ALSO looks darn tasty:

Image

(By For Goodness Cakes in Charlotte, NC)

I'm loving the thick textured buttercream on top; can't you just FEEL that crunching ever-so-slightly, then melting in your mouth?

Ooof, I really want some cake now.

Hang on, here comes another one that's not helping:

(By b. sweet dessert boutique, online only)

Alllll the grabby hands. Gimmie.

Of course I couldn't pass up a chance to feature another Captain America cake, right?

Image

(By Chocomoo Cakes in Sheffield, inspired by Mighty Mugs)

Look how clean and perfect that fondant work is! So good.

Now, let's end this post with a bang:

Image

(By Adrienne & Company Bakery in Jeffersonville, IN)

Fireworks cake! I love all those bright neon colors together.

This one looks like an oil painting:

Image

(By Katja Seaton in the UK)

Look how the fireworks spill over the edge:

Image

I think that's my favorite part; the way the fallout looks so shimmery near the bottom.

Big finale!

Image

(Baker unknown; Google Image Search has failed me. Anyone recognize it?)

Simple, but wow does that pack a punch.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

P.S. Need a cool gift for the person who has everything? Then how about a card that transforms into a bouquet:

Today, we celebrate Independence Day with...the American Flag.

O-oh, say can you SEEEE? BYYY the bakery light?
How so soundly they failed... to give our flag any meaning:

Image

Those brown stripes and blob "stars" ARE a scurr-i-lous sight!

Image

And the RED parts they botched... are so def'nitely leaning:

Image

And what's that O-VER THEEEERE?!

Image

[cymbal crash!!]

Did the BAKER NOT CARE?

Image

[slide whistle!]

A goof, what a sight - it's more THAN I can bear.

Image

(Yes. Really.)

No WAY does thi-is new-fangled airbru-ush yet blaa-aaaave!

Image

[You know, "to blave?" It means "to bluff."]

[Now, someone fetch me an MLT!]

[Ahem]

For the BAND of the THREEEEEE (red stripes)...

Image

And the hoooome...of theeeee....WAAAAAAAVE!

Image

(Before you ask: all of today's wrecks were sold right here in the good ol' US of A, on or around American holidays. I also have LOTS more where these came from. [proffering tissue] Tissue, teachers?)

Thanks to ToniAnn B., Trace L., Stephanie P., Sarah C., Kelly S., Sharon E., Lori A., Lin Q., & Daniel K. for their flagging enthusiasm.

P.S. I agree, you COULD do a better job yourself. So have you seen these new silicone "piping bulbs?"

Shaped and themed cakes are awesome, of course, but I still drool and dream over more traditional wedding cakes, too. After all, they've come a long way from just simple tiers with flowers - even the simple tiers with flowers!

Image

(By Sweet Life Patisserie)

Love this SO MUCH.

And take a look at this amazing "fabric" pleating:

Image

(By Delectable by Su)

Hard to believe those tufted pinwheels and embroidered borders are all sugar. It's so perfect!

And check out the string work on this engagement beauty:

Image

(By Hana of A Piece of Cake)

I love the curls on the top tier, and the piping on the bottom lace collar and upper level strings is simply awe-inspiring. Skill like this always renews my faith in cake artistry. :)

Here's a sweet dress-inspired design:

Image

(By Jackie Nelson)

Look at the design at the bottom of the skirt ruffles!

And how's this for a modern twist on a classic?

Image

(By Elizabeth's Cakes)

If you've never stacked or tried to support cakes in the shape of a ball before, let me assure you: it's hard. And all that detail! Totally swoon-worthy.

Another rounded design:

Image

(By See-Through-Silence)

See that lace border on top? Someone piped that. Yeah. Respect!

And speaking of mad piping skills:

Image

(By The Cake Gallery)

Whoah. This reminds me of the Victorian-themed Grand Floridian resort here in Orlando. Frills and bows and hand-piped lace, oh my!

Or, for a more modern touch:

Image

(By Fleur de Lisa Cakes)

This has been one of my favorite designs since before I even started CW. I love the swirls and the bold flowers.

Or, how about John's favorite?

Image

(By Sugarbelle Cakes)

WOW. Just...wow.

And finally, the cake that had me scooping my jaw off the desk:

Image

(By Susan Trianos aka Peecheekeeno)

That's all *cake*, guys. Look at that tufted tier in the middle. LOOK AT IT. Now, tell me: how the heck do they DO that? Not to mention the perfect corset lacing, the bows, the ruffles, the porcelain-perfect gumpaste roses...seriously, I think I could stare at this all day. Just. Gorgeous.

Happy Sunday!

P.S. Any fellow insomniacs here? Because I feel the call once more to sing the praises of my amazing sleep headphones:

I listen to boring audio books on these every night to keep my brain from spinning out of control, which works wonders. Lately I've been wearing them like a sleep mask -  like the model here - and WOW, that's helped even more than when I wore them like a headband! These things have been a life saver: comfy enough for side sleeping, not too loud like some of my old speakers, and they only cost $16 Prime.

Note that they do run on the big side, but that works out great if you have a big head like me. :D

Half-Off Wreckage!

Sometimes the stories you guys send in with your wrecks are so perfect they don't need anything more from me. So, Steph S., take it away!

It was my son's "half birthday" and he wanted a cake. Because I'm a modern mother, obviously I said yes, but "just half a cake." So, I went to the bakery and explained the sitch.

"Think you could make me a half a cake?"

"Well, nooo, 'cause then we'd like, have to throw away the other half."

"Well, it'll be special order so you can just make one cake layer, right? And then cut it in half and stack it. Like a layer cake!"

"I don't know what you mean."

{{ repeats previous statements with hand motions }}

"Ok, like, I have no idea what you're wanting here."

"Look, just bake one round cake, cut it in half and stick the two sides together for a layer cake. Makes half a cake."

"I think that'll be really messy."

"Sure. Ok, just... Whatever. Do what you've gotta do."

And here is the result:

Image

Thanks to Steph for literally making me screech with laughter. Oh, and for next time: there ARE bakeries who sell half cakes all the time. In fact, some will even write "Happy Birthday" on it first before chopping the thing in half:

Image

See? Now that's service!

Folks may have noticed that the site has been slow for logged-out users over the last while. This is partly because we separate traffic by logged-in, "logged out but have visited the site before", and "logged out, never visited the site before" and assign the fewest resources to the last category (because we're pretty confident the overwhelming majority of it is bot and scraper traffic, even if it's often impossible to say for sure). The flood of garbage traffic is a plague and a scourge the entire internet is dealing with, and it's hitting small sites the hardest as operators get better and better at cloaking their requests to look like real, authentic use. We long ago hit the point where adding more resources is a possible solution (because they just eat them up as soon as we do), and splitting traffic lets us keep the site usable for our actual users without wasting too much server power on garbage.

We've now, lucky us, reached the point where the "logged out, have never visited the site before" path is just flooded all the time, and the "logged out but have visited the site before" path is suffering some of the overflow. We've made some changes to the routing to try to improve things for logged out users who have visited the site before and keep it at "it may be a little bit slow, but at least it works" instead of "it keeps timing out", and we've seen some improvements, but if you're accustomed to browsing the site while logged out, I'm really sorry but it may continue to be a little miserable.

You will get the fastest page loads and the best performance by browsing the site logged in. If you are having trouble loading the front page to log in, bookmark the direct login page. We can't route the front page to the "more power" server pool, because it's a common target for garbage traffic, but we've switched /login over to "more power" and we'll try to keep it there as long as we can unless it starts getting slammed, too.
