Media Roundup: Lots of Thoughts

It hasn’t been that long since the last media roundup and I haven't read that much but I had lots of thoughts that I wanted to share, so have a post:

Hirayasumi, vol 3+4 by Keigo Shinzō— This continues to be very charming. I’m loving all the little details. The cityscapes here feel so warm and lived in! I'm not sure if it's a slice of life manga thing, a manga thing or just an artifact of my limited selection but I've been really enjoying the land/cityscapes in the slice of life manga I've been reading recently
Content note: fatphobia/diet culture

Silver Spoon, vol 14-15 by Hiromu Arakawa— I’m working on a rec list of slice of life manga and I was reminded that I’ve never read the last two volumes of this series. I'd always meant to reread the rest of the series but that felt like too much of a project. So I ended up just reading these last two volumes – it wasn’t that hard to pick up, there’s helpful story summary in the front of each volume.

This is a charming story about a city kid who goes to an ag high school to get away from everything. I love all the details and about farming, food equipment and rural life. I thought it wrapped up nicely!

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, Vol. 1 by C.R.C. Payne, StarBite, et al— I’ve been meaning to read this for a long time, and it was mentioned in the comments of my superhero comics rec list, so I finally got around to it. I ended up getting it on paper because the endless scroll webtoon format isn’t great for my hands.

It’s like a cute slice of life comic about the batfam. It’s got a very fic vibe, things are chill and everyone more or less gets along. Which sounds like exactly what I want in a batfam comic but for this first volume at least, felt a little flat actually. I wanted a bit more conflict or angst or something. I’m generally pretty happy with low conflict personal stakes stuff, but I guess these versions of the character feel a little shallow. Each story is so short, like five pages, its just hard to get much depth in that length.

(I’ll probably read some more of this because it is cute and free online. Maybe if I space out the episodes more it will not only not bother my hands as much but feel less bland.

X-men: The Animated Series season 1— Since I'm more open to Superhero media these days, R suggested we watch this animated series from the 90’s. It’s fun! I like that it's got a big team, though it does mean most characters don’t get much screentime. I also like that they are pretty much just fighting for mutant civil rights. There’s a lot less for me to suspend my moral disbelief about here than in most superhero stories I’ve encountered recently.

The first episode of Tomb Raider King was a lot of fun. Perfect for fans of The Lost Tomb/DMBJ!

I knew it was based on a Korean webtoon, 도굴왕, but I expected it to be in Japanese, not in Korean. Yay for extra practice! \o/

It's available on Crunchyroll.

Do you want to read about LESBIANS? is perhaps the greatest sentence to have plagued the internet. It is also the most misguiding set of words I have come across being online for so many years, but I have read them enough to prevent myself falling into a trap. Being aware about the trap, however, does not equate to me not reading those works, so here I am, with a review of Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir because it is constantly talked about like a top five SFF lesbian book.

Is it a top five SFF lesbian book? I can't answer that question because I'm not sure I've even read five in that category. I'm trying! I really am! It's just that every book is so bad I have to take a one-year break after reading it. If you let me include baihe novels, then my answer is a definitive "NO!" Is it SFF? Decently so. Is it lesbian? Hm … NO. I want to say I was lied to by the internet's hype, and all I can say is that I am that gullible purchaser who did not read the fine print warning me there would be no sort of romance in the first book (not that I would have known where to find this fine print because this book gets glazed to the ends of Earth).

do not read if you don't want to read about gideon the ninth bashing )

Girl Haven + Enola Holmes 3

The graphic novel Girl Haven written by Lilah Sturges and illustrated by Meaghan Carter was a lot of fun! :D Ash and a few friends are transported to Koretris, a girl-only world, in order to save Queen Cassandra. What does it mean about Ash's gender?

I loved how this concept was dealt with. It tackles forced feminisation (Ash would like something to happen so that the decision is not hers to make), but the story has her answer her own questions. Junebug is another questioning character, testing they/them pronouns at the end of the book. There's also sapphic representation. For more LGBT Quick Reads, check out my rec list.

----------

Netflix's Enola Holmes 3 was great, as always.

I enjoyed the investigation, the anti-colonialism, and of course the fourth-wall breaking.

  • Filipino WTA player Alex Eala has made it to R16 of Wimbledon and the internet conversation around her has been quite racist, downplaying her achievements because she's a "rich Asian" (never mind that the Philippines is a third-world country, and so rich in the PH =/= rich in any other country, Asian or not, and having someone become a professional tennis player takes a village because there's 0 government support for anything other than a men's basketball team). Also like you can kind of feel that people think that Southeast Asians are only valid if they fit the third-world stereotype of not having an ounce of privilege ever. She hasn't even done anything to warrant all this scrutiny, she's just existing politely.

  • Speaking of tennis, I watched 3 (...out of 4) eps of the Nadal documentary on Netflix and it actually made me feel a lot of things. I also enjoyed the dramatically antagonistic portrayal of Novak Djokovic, complete with Big Ominous Music.

  • Saw The Sheep Detectives, a family movie about a flock of sheep who have to solve the murder of their shepherd and contend with the ideas of mortality and memory. It actually made me laugh out loud multiple times. The warm, fun bits were stronger than the sad, tearjerky bits, and I loved hearing 500 Miles recontextualized as a man's song for his sheep.

  • I still don't know anything about Love and Deep Space OR Anime Expo but I'm a little addicted to watching clips of the paid fanservice actors haha especially the ones where they lead interactions or are playing off the customers' energy!

Any Human Power by Manda Scott was awesome! A ghost watches over her family as her grandchildren start a revolutionary movement against the patriarchy and the corruption of democracy.

It has beautiful prose like an old-school novel. I was especially interested in the activism plotline, though it stops at a random place (not a cliffhanger, don't worry). The book isn't listed as part of a series on Goodreads, but I've found mention of a sequel on the author's website, so that makes more sense.

The grandmother is a lesbian, one of the grandchildren is aroace and probably on the autism spectrum, the twins are part of a polyamorous community, and a few more characters are also queer.

A new baihe live action (with what I hear is the thinnest veneer of plausible deniability) drama has started airing. It's When Colors Meet (画梦录, pinyin: hua meng lu) and can be viewed here on the Tencent/WeTV YouTube channel (paid membership required). It consists of three hour-long episodes.

    The trailer is here:

    And here's the synposis:

In Republican-era Shanghai, Xu Yanzhen, an orphaned painter with extraordinary artistic talent, unexpectedly crosses paths with Jiang Xinyu, the chief accountant of Ronghui Bank, who is caught in a dangerous crisis. After being framed, Jiang Xinyu has no choice but to form an alliance with Xu Yanzhen. Meanwhile, the bank plots to sell a priceless national treasure painting to foreign buyers at a bargain price. Using her exceptional painting skills, Xu Yanzhen creates a perfect forgery and secretly swaps it for the original. After enduring countless trials and setbacks, the two join forces to navigate the treacherous power struggles surrounding them, overcoming one peril after another while unraveling a series of seemingly impossible predicaments.

Word on the fandom streets is that this script was originally written for Janice Man and Xu Lu, the lead actresses in the drama version of The Message, but that particular iteration of the project never came to fruition.

Another Media Roundup, less than a week after the last one? More likely than you think! As the title of this post says I have a bunch of short and quick reads to talk about.

The Faraway Forest: Wally’s Route by Debbie Fong—This is an early reader graphic novel about a raccoon mail carrier. It's very sweet and has fun colorful art. It's not very long so there's not much else to say about it.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest issues 1-12 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, et al. —I was trying to explain to R the other day that comics have their own brand of weirdness, but I couldn't articulate what set it apart just vibes. Anyways this has the comic weirdness vibes. There's parallel worlds, time travel, ancient Chinese villains (and heroes), rooms full doorways, ect. I generally like this kind of weirdness though, so this was fun to read.

It's set “some years ago” when Dick is still Robin. (I briefly tried to figure out how it fits into continuity, then I remembered that continuity does make any sense) I like the way Dick is written here. He's a little goofy and a little snarky – it feels right for him at that age. Kara/Supergirl is also here and a lot of fun!

Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki, and Joëlle Jones—I liked This Place Kills Me a lot and wanted to check out the author's other works. I read a few things she wrote a while back but she's written a lot more since then! This was pretty good. I guess teen girls are Tamaki’s thing because teen girls and their friendship was also central to this book.
Content Notes are Spoilers death of a teen as a major plot point

A True Wonder: The Comic Book Hero Who Changed Everything by Kirsten W. Larson and Katy Wu—This non-fiction comic about the history of Wonder Woman is the size and shape of a picture book and aimed at young readers. As such it's not very detailed or nuanced but it is quite charming. I do find the straightforward “progress” narrative a little bit frustrating though.

How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema—This book from 1978 was referenced in some of the non-fiction about comics I read, and I was curious. It turned out to be a quick read with lots of pictures written in a very breezy style. One of the things I’ve been unsure about in discussion about comics history is references to “superhero comic style” – I had only a vague idea what that meant. This book has given me a much clearer idea. Also wow the sexism built into that style leaps off the page here! Men are angular and muscular, while women are soft and curvy. Still helpful for my quest to better understand comics history.

Perspective! for Comic Book Artists: How to Achieve a Professional Look in your Artwork by David ChelseaI— More non-fiction about comics. How to books aren’t always the best for learning how to be a more nuanced reader unfortunately. This is very technical, and what I really wanted was some discussion out how perspective can be used in comics and how that’s different from other visual arts. Oh well, I shouldn’t really complain that this book was exactly what it said it would be.

The first three episodes of X-Men '97 S2 were awesome!

I loved that we got an episode focused on X-Force (and X-Factor, but sadly without Rictor/Shatterstar).

Morph is canonically enby, though it's only a mention in the character sheets of the ending credits. These episodes needed more Morpherine, but the Cherik scenes were fun. <3

Right, so some weeks back, I've been trying to understand CN mobile gacha otome game fan culture, and if you've been online for the past two weeks, you have probably heard of the Love and Deepspace fiasco. Well, the timing of me trying to figure out the fandom culture in CN gacha otome spaces couldn't have been more timely I guess! /jk

I'm not gonna go over the whole thing. I'm just here to explain the background, such as:

    1. What are otome games?
    2. How do mobile gacha otome games even work?
    3. What is Love and Deepspace game about?

Throughout this, I’ll weave in some observations on the CN mobile gacha otome fandom culture/space.

I'm just gonna put everything in a cut so you can conveniently skip through everything if you are tired of this thing!

    What are otome games )
How do mobile gacha otome games even work? )
What is Love and Deepspace about? )

    Concluding remarks of sorts???

While I think all the bullying tactics and weaponizing the state is awful (though not the first time CN side has done something like that), it’s also kinda amazing (in the “watching a train wreck happen in slowmo) how Papergames managed to make all the bad decisions every step of the way… It has been a very eventful few weeks, and I really hope the fandom will calm down a bit soon because the sinophobia has been crazy (and the xenophobia on the CN side too).

Anyway, that’s it. I’m gonna make another post sometime this month specifically about Light and Night, and Lovebrush Chronicles because I love them a lot!

Also, feel free to ask me any questions, I guess? About otome games, gacha otome, any of the games mentioned here. I don't promise I can give a good, full answer, but I certainly can try to give you an answer. Also, feel free to correct me if you see something wrong here.

EDITED 2026/07/08: Not a full day since this post was up and here we are with more LaDS Situation things... TBH I kinda wish global players will understand that LaDS/Papergames is based in China, and their latest apology/announcement that they are pulling out of BiliBili World is a sign that yes, the government is breathing down their neck, so this has gone much bigger than bring back Valko/don't bring back Valko. Anyways, sending out hugs (if wanted) to anyone who enjoyed/still enjoying the game and is hurting from all of this.
