New words this week : 3,431 words which is decent, considering.

WIPs worked on this week : 1, with no new WIPs (yay!)

It's still Wednesday for 46 more minutes, so here we are! This week has been all right. Lot of little things, but sometimes it's just like that. At least the heat wave has broken, so I'm grateful for that.

The Old Guard

food truck au : 3,431 words which brings the total to 175,064 words and we're still trucking along through Chapter 14. How long is too long for a chapter? Because I'm afraid we might be approaching it. I already cut this one in half and now the half I'm working on is at 14k. My longest two chapters so far are around 16k so I'd love to not go over that, but I'm afraid that I might. Ugh. This one was supposed to be short. Also made the appalling discovery that I managed to fuck up my timeline by getting the day they started dating and the day they met confused and agonized over how to fix that because pulling on that thread started to unravel a whole bunch of other stuff and I would've had to rip so many other chapters apart to make it work again. But then I realized, fuck it, Joe is probably mushy enough to want to celebrate both days so we'll just go with that, and I ended up only needing to change like half a line to make it work. So yay for that \o/

At one time, the cellar of the current palace was made up of dank, dim chambers where the palace's slave-servants slept and sometimes worked. When the previous Chara made up his mind to free all the palace slaves, there was much discussion over what to do with the former slave-quarters. The somewhat belated consensus by the palace officials was that these rooms were unfit to live in. There was talk of turning the rooms into storage rooms.

To everyone's amazement, the palace's community of eunuchs came forward and asked that the dank, dim chambers be given over to them. They had never before had a place in the palace that belonged solely to them. Many of them, being recently freed slaves, had lived in the slave-quarters; they considered this their home, one that might finally belong to them, rather than to their slave-masters.

The Chara graciously granted them their new quarters and forbade anyone who was not a half-man from entering the quarters, except by invitation of the eunuchs.

I can testify that the eunuch community has done a marvellous job of redecorating the cellar, so that it is bright and cheerful. One room alone has not been touched: the slaves' punishment room, which remains as a stark reminder of this place's bloody past.

If you are invited to visit the eunuchs' quarters, I strongly advise you to visit the punishment room. My advice grows even stronger if you keep slaves yourselves.

[Translator's note: Free-man's Blade includes a visit to the slave quarters, courtesy of a half-man.]

My apologies for the delay! Snippets collection for both WIP Big Bang and WIP Reverse Bang is now open. Please only submit snippets if you are reasonably sure you will finish your project before January 1st, 2027. WIPBB participants need to submit at least one (but preferably up to three) snippets between 500 to 1500 words each. WIPRB participants need to submit at least one snippet (but no more than three) of their project uploaded to an independent hosting site.

Because snippets are going up a day late, we're going to extend snippets collection to July 12th.

New words this week : 4,021 words which is okay.

WIPs worked on this week : 3, with no new WIPs (yay!)

I've really fallen off doing these posts recently, but writing has been hard, everything has been hard, and here we are. For a while I was getting about 40 min of uninterrupted writing time per day which was amazing, and then I stopped getting that so writing became pecking out a few words here and there in between doing other things which, surprise, isn't nearly as productive.

The Old Guard

food truck au : 2,641 words which brings the total to 171,633 words and there is no way this fucking thing won't be breaking 200k goddamnit. I'm still stuck on Chapter 14, trying to get all the other little subplots I've been neglecting in favor of all the smut rolling again, and then it turned out it was too much for one chapter so it got split in two, but with two I thought certain bits of it needed a bit more build-up so it got longer, and I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. (Me: this fic is too long. Also Me: Quynh and Nicky are going to go spend a thousand words and counting in Costco together.) I'm also in the loop of non-productivity, where I find feedback very motivating, except I haven't finished a chapter in so long that it's worn off from the last one, so I'm not writing much, so I don't have anything new to send to my beta, so I don't get any more feedback, which means no motivation, etc etc. Trying to push through it but life is hard, writing is hard, woe is me.

misc : 598 words and these are mostly for the series of little extras I have that will be set post-food truck au + some other little snippets of scenes that don't work with food truck au. Like, a little bit of dialogue that doesn't fit at all but I had floating around my brain and so I jotted it down anyhow even though I know it won't go anywhere.

werewolf au : 189 words which brings the total to 16,996 words and this was just writing down a little bit of worldbuilding so I wouldn't forget it. Uggggh this fic is going to be so fucking good when I get around to writing it.

2026 GOALS

2026 Total Wordcount Goal : 144,389 / 150,000

2026 Total Writing Days : 157 / 365

JUNE
Another busy month, not much writing time, not many words. I was really hoping to turn it around on the writing front after a bust end of May, but alas. We're all doing our best.

June Wrap-Up : I finished the month with 14,964 words which is less than I would have liked. A total of 4 WIPs got words, with all words going into 4 Old Guard fics. I fell well shy of my goal of 25k, alas.

JULY
I don't feel particularly optimistic about how things will go in July, but let's see where it goes.

July Wordcount Goal : 20k which should be doable if I can get at all back on track with writing.

July Fics to Focus On
food truck au : and I don't even know. I've been stuck on Chapter 14 since the middle of May and here we are at the beginning of July. It's at 172k by now, with six chapter still to be finished off. I am almost certain it's going to be over 200k fucccckk. Estimated wordcount, 210k.

The Eternal Dungeon is no longer a prison. It's a battlefield.

Split apart from their closest loves and friends, a small group of prison-workers seek to abolish the use of torture against prisoners in the queendom's royal dungeon. Time is running out, for the deadly High Seeker has already flogged and executed prison-workers who oppose his policies.

Do the reformers have enough time and skill to bring about radical change in the dungeon? Will they be able to overcome their mistrust of one another?

NEWS & UPCOMING FICTION

I hope those of you who have been affected the heat waves have been keeping cool. I and my family are nicely air-conditioned so far, but the past month or so has seen me dealing with a documentation problem, a flooded basement, and three family medical crises leading to trips to the emergency room and, in one case, a stay in the hospital.

All that hanging around for doctors to arrive has left me plenty of time in which to write, but I fell short of time in June in which to edit and lay out my next e-book. So I've rescheduled the release of the now-aptly-titled "Wait" to August.

In the meantime, I've decided to add in a new feature to my monthly updates: "From the Backlist." I know that I have a somewhat formidable backlist, and it may seem challenging to know where to start with it. Here's the secret: Start anywhere. I've written nearly all my stories so that they can be read independently of one another. Of course, if you hate spoilers with a passion, you'll want to start at the beginning of each series cycle. But otherwise, you may enjoy having the chance to dip into various spots of my backlist.

Website news: I've added Edward Eager to my Links page and have updated the links to other authors. Among other things, the site of Sylvia Engdahl (which hasn't been updated since 2024) has gone down, which is a little alarming, since the author was born in 1933. If you're interested in her writings, her quite-reasonably-priced books and ebooks are still available at bookstores - though for how long, I can't say; her more recent novels are self-published. Her Children of the Star trilogy, which I first read as a teen, deeply influenced my own writing. (I unconsciously swiped the ending of The Breaking from one of her novels.)

My fiction announcements are also available by e-mail and feeds.

Check-In #2 is now closed! I thought it was supposed to close on the 23rd, not the 22nd, so everyone got almost a full extra day. I think I answered all the Notes To Mods questions that were put in but just in case I didn't, feel free to send an email to wipbigbang@gmail.com with whatever questions you may have and I'll answer them as soon as we can (I, Mod Ragna, still have some personal stuff going on that got exacerbated by finding out there was a death in the family earlier in the week, so it's been fun).

Also, friendly reminder that snippets submission for both WIPBB and WIPRB will start on July 1st and go until July 11th. If you think you will have problems submitting your snippets and story info during that time, please let us know ASAP via the mod email so we can make arrangements to accommodate you if possible.
