Snows of Winter, Heat of Summer

Snows of Winter, heat of Summer,
Two times, two worlds.
The Twins, they dance.

Winter King, in darkness reigns,
Death and darkness, ice and cold.
A crown of thorns upon his head,
Clothed in shadows, hidden light.
Magic dark and waning sun.
Tettens, Woden, Hermes stalks,
From the Castle of Weeping comes.

Summer King in brightness reigns,
Life, rebirth, light, and heat.
Winged crown, light rebounds,
Clothed in fire, born in light.
The sun it rises, warms the land.
A Child is born to warm our hearts.
Lucet, Lucifer, Morning Star,
Riding forth on wings of the morning.

Clouding the Guardians

Since I know students and non-Feri people read this: The Korythalia/Bloodrose notes have been passed around the tradition for decades. Where they came from is absolutely common knowledge, and I could produce a whole bunch of people who received them directly from Gabriel, as well as a couple of people who were around when they were written, without trying very hard. Any claims that "nobody knows" who wrote that material (which has been tried before) is absolutely not credible.

There are substantive disagreements at the heart of our (or your, if you're of the persuasion that students aren't fully Feri) schism. Questions like, "What should be held secret, and what should be in public," and "Who wrote that, where did it come from, who has the right to share it and how," and "How can Feri be effectively taught?"

There are also personal feuds, misunderstandings grown into flame wars, slander, calumny, and partisan reactiveness bouncing around a small and increasingly shit-stained echo chamber.

Please, folks. Separate the light from the heat.

Dead, Mad, or a Poet: A Journal to Faerie

THE story goes that if you spend the night on a fairy mound, the morning will find you dead, mad, or a poet. Those who dare knock on hidden doors run certain risks.

But as poet and witch Victor Anderson once said, “Anything worthwhile is dangerous. ” We believe witchcraft is worth doing, and so is art, and for much the same reasons. The willingness to stare unblinking into the eye of truth can bring beauty, ecstasy and illumination. It can also shake you to your core.

We are inspired by our allegiance to Faery witchcraft, but we welcome contributions from all those who hear the secret call…whether it speaks to you in the voice of your Muse, or some other way. You needn’t be mad, or dead, though we won’t necessarily hold it against you if you are.

On the whole, we prefer poet.

I and some other initiates have been working on this.

We are Old Craft. We are Faery. We whisper our magic in the moonlight, from breath to ear, from hand to heart; it may be earned, but never bought. We are Her children, we align ourselves with the Old Ways. We hold fast to our kin, our brothers and sisters in the Craft, and we hold their privacy and welfare dear; for we are all embodiments of that Mystery. All are equally bound, equally supported.

We dissociate and emphatically disconnect ourselves from the practice of those who seek to define the name “Feri” exclusively to themselves and from the public face they have created. The core of our Craft is ecstatic, intimate, and profound Mystery, precious and living. To place it in the marketplace, or share it outside of the circle of those who are well-known, well-trusted, and well-beloved, is to undercut its beauty and power and to invite abuse from all sides. That truth has been demonstrated many times, but the lesson is not heeded. It is time to say to those who attempt it that we are not on the same path; that their Wisdom is not our Wisdom, their Mystery is not our Mystery, and their Craft is not our Craft. We are bound by the incorruptible red thread passed down by Victor and Cora Anderson from the Harpy Coven, and from their teachers in the unknown past. Our lives lived in integrity and steeped in magic are our witness to that bond.

There are words only spoken in a properly prepared circle which are tools of Art, that bind us closer to the Mystery and to each other. And there are such things as harmful secrets, which protect abuse of power and shield those who would deceive. The Wise know the difference. Our powers are to Know, to Will, to Dare, and to Keep Silent. So mote it be.

To give you an idea, this currently represents roughly thirty initiates who either gave input to the original statement or have expressed support of it...and literally more every day as people hear of it. There are others who do not support all of the statements as presented, but have stated sympathy. There's another website, www.faeryroads.com/, that went up after ours. I don't even know whose that is; apparently we struck a nerve.

There will soon be a blog (with multiple authors), where people can get a more diverse set of viewpoints than is available elsewhere. We aren't going to be teaching the tradition there, but we will express our views about issues affecting the tradition and whatever other topics strike us.

Clarification

Basically...if you don't ever intend to seek initiation in Feri, don't see the point, think it's impractical, etc etc....I wasn't talking to you. I might ask, as I did one person, why you want to be not-initiated in an initiatory tradition, but that's really a whole other issue. I was talking to those other people. The ones who think that two years of online training at $50 a month will do them some good towards becoming a Feri initiate. Chances are, it will not.

You might ask, "but elorie , why should we care what you think?" That seems to be the undercurrent of some of the comments, though people were polite enough not to put it in those terms. It's ok, I can feel the vibes of your thought waves.

Here are a few reasons:

I am a Feri initiate, and I have a perspective on the tradition that many of you do not. This is not to imply that all the initiates feel the same way (obviously not) but I do have some insider information as it were.
I have not yet articulated all my reasons for my opinions about the various issues, but am willing to do so if asked (or even if not asked, later when I'm out from under my current pile of work). Specifically the how and why I think that distance learning is non-optimal.
More importantly perhaps, I teach Feri, and therefore...I am among the pool of possible teachers to whom you will have to go once your not-teaching-towards-initiation gig ends. I also talk to other Feri teachers, initiates, and initiates who don't teach now but might in the future. I assure you that I am not the only one who holds these opinions. When I say, taking online classes or workshops not only won't necessarily help your chances to pursue other options later on, it might actively hurt them, you should pay attention.

To be blunt, I have taken on the former students of some other more well-known Feri teachers...and I have refused to take other people on who seemed to assume that their former training was a mark in their favor, when in fact it was the opposite.

Classroom Feri: What are you getting?

I keep running across this issue in different ways, so I thought it might be worth saying something about it. Many electrons have been inconvenienced talking about charging for teaching, the classroom vs. apprenticeship model, and long-distance teaching. To hear some people talk, you'd think that there's a small cadre of pitchfork-wielding Feris out there coming to hunt them down, for no other reason than that we want to interfere with their life's work and harsh their mellow.

That is, shall we say, not the real issue here.

There are legitimate areas of debate about the different approaches so long as you are speaking of pedagogical value and precedent...that is, some of us think that you can't teach witchcraft well except person-to-person. If your goal is quality not quantity, there's really not a debate. I am a professional educator, and there's no question that working one-on-one with students is the best way for them to learn. In my own teaching of witchcraft generally, I choose the path that empowers the student most effectively, even if it restricts access to the few people I have the time to teach...access being the most common and to my mind most valid argument for teaching on a larger scale.

I also believe that witchcraft, having to do with such woowoo topics as energy and divine relationship and old-fashioned earth-lovin' stuff, cannot be taught intellectually nor at a distance. It is experiential, and by its nature cannot be conveyed in words. Only in experience, and that experience needs to be lived not merely described. Even meeting periodically in person is not as good as regular contact with an initiate (or several initiates) in ritual space.

I do not charge money for teaching Feri because my own teacher believes, based on thirty-five years of observation, that doing so is a corrupting influence. I trust his judgment on the matter. It's worth noting, also, that whatever Victor said on the subject, he himself did not charge money for his teaching, and he did it all one-on-one. He was famous for adapting to the particular needs and inclinations of the student. That's exactly what I strive to do.

Well, so you've heard all that and you still think that learning Feri via workshop or online is the thing for you to do. There's one more thing for you to consider.

Most of the people who teach that way explicitly do not guarantee that they will EVER take you on as an initiatory student. There are a number of different reasons for this; one of which is that they do not wish to go against Victor's statement that you don't charge money when teaching towards initiation. They wish for there to be a clear distinction between their paying students and their advanced ones, and they are usually pretty clear that those things are separate. That's them being conscientious.

Yet despite the fact that they say that, most would-be Feri students seem to assume that they will be among the few...literally a handful out of dozens or hundreds...who WILL become advanced, initiatory students. Observation says otherwise.

Even if they are realistic about that, people also seem to assume that taking an online course or a workshop is some kind of credential; that if it doesn't work out with that teacher, they can then go to a different Feri teacher and pick up where they left off. This is not true.

Some teachers won't teach you at all under those circumstances...won't, or can't, because you've learned a style of working that is too different from theirs. Some will decide you need to unlearn what they consider to be bad habits. Nearly all of them will make you start over from the beginning.

Feri is not intellectual. Having studied with x person for x years is not necessarily a recommendation. Not naming any names, sometimes it is a factor in your favor, because I know that person's work and I think they have it together. Not naming any names, sometimes it's the opposite...because I know that person's work and consider that you sticking around with them for a long time reflects poorly on your judgment.

The bottom line is, if you think that it's worth paying for those classes, or spending the time and energy on them, purely for their own sake...then yes, that's a reasonable choice to make. But if your ultimate goal is to be a part of the tradition, and you are thinking those classes will give you entrée to the tradition...that is simply not so. Ask yourself, if I knew I would never go farther than this, and might be skewing my chances for finding a long-term teacher, would I still do it? Then make your choice.

Public service announcement

You may hear of a child custody case in the San Francisco Bay Area where the parents are claiming that their infant child was taken from them due to their religious beliefs. They are specifically targeting the Feri community where they have some friends, asking people to donate funds for their legal defense.

First, please be discerning. Religion does sometimes enter into custody cases...but it is almost always due to one parent bringing it into a battle with another. It is rare (but possible) for it to enter into a case where only an outside agency is involved, but for CPS to swoop in and take an infant in the San Francisco Bay Area where there has been a strong Pagan presence for forty years solely due to the parents' religious beliefs strains credulity.

Secondly, however you feel about that statement, one of those people has been the subject of internal discussion in both Reclaiming and Feri circles for months now...long before the infant was born...due to a situation with another child. There is far, far more to this than is being said publicly.

I am not going to muddy the waters further. The people involved deserve due process and privacy...except where they use my religion to make public appeals for money. I will not allow any posting on their behalf in this community, and I urge you not to forward their appeals or give them money yourself. I also am not entertaining any discussion of or arguments with my choice in this matter.

It seems to me that one way to answer everyone's concerns would be to say up front that this is meant to be a discussion forum and that if you want to talk about classes you are offering, it needs to be in a format that invites and encourages discussion rather than the flyer-style announcement format. Real life example:

I have been doing talks on Southern folk magic, spoken charms, and other aspects
of traditional witchcraft (meaning the folk-magic kind) at various gatherings. It's based
partially on book research (such as Emma Wilby's Cunning Folk and Familiar Spirits)
as well as the fact that my particular line emphasizes the Southern folk magic origins
of Feri. I personally grew up about 60 miles east of where Cora did, and have been
familiar with some of those practices since childhood. The next talk coming up will
be at the Florida Pagan Gathering the first full weekend in November.

...I will indeed be in Florida doing that then. You can see me, yezida , and Sharon Knight there :)

The format should be something like, "Here's a thing I have been doing. This is how it relates to my Feri practice, and here are some opinions/more relevant information. If you want to know more, here's how you can find out."

1) Some people have expressed discomfort with the idea of this community being a venue for the promotion of workshops and other teaching-for-pay or distance-teaching enterprises. This is an area of contention within the tradition, and some folks have strong feelings against the classroom/workshop model. Since there are many other venues where people can promote those workshops, it's not likely that creating one "ad free" space would place an undue burden on their ability to carry on however they wish. I would like to elicit feedback from the community on the subject before a decision is made.

2) We don't currently have a policy about copyright violations, as I believe that is adequately covered in LiveJournal's TOS; suffice it to say that I won't allow links to plagiarized material either. Other, related issues have mostly not come up, but I could write something about it for the sake of clarity (I am referring to the matter of publicizing material that some lines of Feri consider secret). My personal opinions on the matter may be found here. I wish to emphasize that this is a separate issue, so make sure you distinguish between them in your responses. I'm not really entertaining debate on that one, just a query as to whether I need to write up an explicit policy.
