musesfool: key lime pie (pie = love)
[personal profile] musesfool
I did end up going to bed super early last night - I hit the sack at 8:30 pm and slept, with minor interruptions, until 8 am, and it was fantastic. I don't know why I was so exhausted yesterday, but I'm glad I didn't try to fight it like I normally would to stay up until my usual bedtime.

My meetings next Tuesday have all been cancelled, so I've added the day to my vacation next week, so I'll be in Monday and then done until the next Monday. I also discovered I had booked 2 separate optometrist appointments, so I cancelled the one next Thursday and will go in August as usual.

My plan this weekend is to bake a blueberry crumb cake* to take to my brother's on Sunday for our birthday bbq, and then make a key lime pie for myself on Tuesday, since my birthday is Wednesday. I haven't figured out what I'll make myself for dinner, but that is always the less important part of things to me. As long as I have a good birthday dessert, the dinner can be anything.

*Note: it will be an orange blueberry crumb cake since my sister does not like lemon. We'll see how it goes!

I am also once again waiting for the cleaning service to let me know if they are coming on Monday or not. They did not come this past Monday since I said it wouldn't work for me, but then there was radio silence, so today I reached out again, but have not gotten an answer. I appreciate the work they do immensely. I just wish they were better at communicating!

My dental appointment went well - it was just a cleaning! - but they still want me to come every three months instead of twice a year. Sigh. Anyway, the appointment was timed so that I did not have coffee or breakfast beforehand, and didn't get home until a little after 1 pm, so I should have just had lunch. But I was so tired that sleep won out over food and I ended up taking a THREE HOUR tour nap. I did finally eat, but now I'm like, maybe I should just go back to bed? Idk.

Anyway, it's Wednesday and I have read some books!

What I've just finished
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. This was enjoyable but very low-key, even at the climax.

Long Live Evil and All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan. Hiilarious and very genre-savvy portal fantasy. I enjoyed both books and am hoping the third one sticks the landing. Sadly, it's not due out until next summer. Alas.

What I'm reading now
Dead Hand Rule by Max Gladstone, which is the third (and final?) book in the Craft Wars trilogy? series? Idk. I'm enjoying it but he is pulling people from all over the first series and I don't always remember who they are since it's been a while since I read those books.

What I'm reading next
As ever, it is a mystery.

It's Turnabout Serenade week (the dates of the concert/court case from Ace Attorney 4 case 3), and I don't have any fic written for it! (In my defense, it's because I've been so busy writing the sequels to the follow-up I already wrote to that case. Sonata is my "look how much I love Turnabout Serenade" fic, it's a tough act to follow.)

I could always polish up and post the missing scene from until I bring you home on AO3, and maybe pick a Klavier/Daryan kink meme prompt to fill. I need sleep before I do any of that, but come on, it's my favorite Ace Attorney case, it'd be really nice to do something. (Also I think my neighbors are finally out of fireworks, so maybe I can stop staying up until 3 AM now.)

I meant to post last night but I could barely keep my eyes open so I went to bed early (and missed a super rare Mets comeback in Atlanta!) and slept for 10 glorious hours! I felt great at work today, and got some stuff done, and made some suggestions about the September board meeting agenda that I am sure the CEO and the Chair will not like, but they wanted to get radical and also not overrun the meeting time by 45 minutes again, and I offered a good way to do it to my boss. We'll see if anyone bites.

I am off tomorrow for the dentist - it should just be a cleaning (though I am braced to hear I need yet another crown) but I am always so tired when it's over. And my team meeting on Tuesday got cancelled so I am tempted to take next Tuesday off since I'm already off Wednesday (my birthday), Thursday, and Friday of next week. My boss was like, sure! but I'm still thinking about it.

I thought I had something else to post about but I can't remember... oh right, I finally watched Project Hail Mary the other night. I enjoyed it but it was too long. And there was not enough Eva Stratt, who was the best thing in the movie.

So yesterday’s intent was to go to town, see A Perfect Life, then Bleach and Backrooms. So let’s see how that went.

Before I went through The Mandalorian And Grogu soundtrack finally came, yipee! Strnage lc though the physical disc has one less track than Spotify does which I didn’t notice until I ripped it this morning.

The trip to town went ok. I went a lil early to check if the co-op by the station had the mandalorian drinks cause I saw they were on offer but alas they just had the fruit shoots and the Robinsons cordials (which I may stoke up on the mango one is really nice)

In town I didn’t do much, just popped in Poundland then went straight to the cinema.

Trailers for A Private Life
Wild Horse Nine: Looks like it could be funny but I’m not sure it’s something I’d watch
Camp Miasma: I was sold on this the moment Gillian’s character said ‘there’s a whole at the bottom of the lake where the films come from’ so glad it has a date
There was a music thing I missed the title of
Tony: something about the life of Anthony Bourdain, looks like it could be pretty good, again, not sure I’d see it myself

About two thirds of the way through my right eye started aching so I spent the back half of it with my eye closed or covered up. That was fine to finish off something but not upideal to watch a whole other thing, thankfully I just got the ticket for A Private Life, cause there was an hour ago between it and Bkeach I intended to use for lunch then come back.

So instead I left, popping in Aldi to kill time before getting on the train home. Of course the train had issues too. It stopped at the station before home and stayed there for over 10 minutes without explanation.

I don’t mind that much that I didn’t see Bleach, cause I’m sure I’d be lost, but I might be able to see Backrooms cause it has been extended a few days next week. (Though I am hoping to do Minions And Monsters/Evil Dead Burn and The Odyssey next week.) I do wanna get the Moana cup the cinema is getting for mum, cause one topper is Heihei so 8 wanna get it before we see it (if we do) cause she loves him for some reason.

Once home I pretty much flopped, watched Castle, did some two point hospital (badly) and then waited for The Pale Horse to come on sky mix. It was an ok adaption and one of those things were you were spotting people. There was Louise Jameson and Jean Marsh among others. Plus there was one guy I couldn’t place, I recognised his voice but couldn’t place him cause of his glasses. Then he took them off and I saw it was Andy Serkis. I guess Clark Kent just wearing glasses isn’t a bad disguise as people think.

I didn’t do much after it. I yapper to a friend, did a little gaming but the call cut out then my eyes went achy so I just went up to bed.

This morning after putting the soundtrack on my laptop, then pod thing, I watched a Heated Rivalry ep (I meant to last night). The rest of the day is gonna be waiting on the food shop, then Seapeekay’s subathon and then… Who knows.

Had a couple of baking fails this weekend, so I guess it's granola bars for breakfast this week! Oh well. Eventually I will bake those myself too, but for now, store-bought is fine. *g* Luckily, this hoisin garlic chicken (NYTimes gift link) turned out well. I added soy sauce in place of salt, and also a sprinkling of Chinese five-spice powder instead of red pepper flakes, and it was delicious. And I have leftovers enough for a couple more meals. I also made bacon this morning, so it'll be another week of chicken bacon ranch wraps for lunch. Uh, not the hoisin chicken, though. Perdue short cuts roasted chicken strips.

And I had the first plums of the summer this weekend and they were so good. Plums! I love them so much! Cherries have also been good, but are much more expensive. And I figured out a use for the leftover seltzer for when Friend L was here - it's a good vehicle for the electrolyte powder I otherwise don't end up using, and this weekend it came in handy.

In other news, this morning, my cleaning service texted me asking if they could come tomorrow. I responded promptly saying, no, but I was available on these other dates. They have not responded. So now I'm like, are they coming tomorrow? Do I have to be ready? Because I am not ready and that is why I said no. Ugh. So now I will scramble to get ready and they won't come. Bah.

The past few days have been a bit bleh because my head’s been so achy suddenly. It might be due to the weather which, though it hasn’t been hot has been heavy. Which ugh. And has t helped that my stomach’s been weird too.

I had considered going to the cinema later in the week but shifted the plans to Monday but now it feels a bit 50/50. It sucks that A Private Life only has showing a tomorrow but I don’t mind missing Bleach and might be able to catch Backrooms later on.

The coming soon for the cinema did get update though so Camp Miasma (and Coyote Vs Acme) is coming 21st of August. So that’ll be an interesting double bill.

Speaking of films Arrow has a sale on so I looked through added some things that looked interesting and… not gone through them all (for reference I originally had 58 things, it’s now 46 and I intend to get 5). The main definite one is the Sana Collection cause I’ve had my eye on it for awhile but.. we’ll see what else I get. It’s not like I’ll be ordering for a week anyway.

(And speaking of ordering my Mandalorian And Grogu soundtrack finally shipped woo!)

And also speaking of films Project Hail Mary is on prime which my tv keeps reminding me but I’ll probably hold off on watching (if you’ve not though you shouldn’t!). But my tweet mentioning it got posted on their insta stories which was a surprise.

I did start some things from the subscriptions. First was Strange New Worlds, so I started season 2 and I’m four eps in. The first ep was a solid opener, the second made me pissed at the federation’s prejudice. The third was a contemporary time travel one which I’m usually eh on but this was actually a great one. The fourth was a little eh though. I do love the new chief engineer, she’s funny.

I also watched Widow’s Bay and I’m two eps in but I’m totally into it. The second ep had kinda Hokum vibes being set in a hotel, though the twist there didn’t surprise me. But it also had the creepy image of a church bell chained up… despite ringing the night before.

Then last night I finally finished Welcome To Derry. I wasn’t sure they’d be able to wrap things up well enough in just one episode but they actually did. Though I am so pissed about what happened to my boy Taniel. Joshua stop playing characters that get gunned down.

Plus Joshua Odjick decided to post on insta and… Unff

Other than that I’ve been low energy and not done much, bar daily gaming stuff and going on Two Point Hospital. I’m several hospitals in now and the difficulty spike is so annoying.

I’m sure I had other thoughts but, like always, they’re very much gone.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. Incisive fictional look at the whole trad wife thing. I enjoyed the hell out of this. The narrator is supremely unlikeable but it is on purpose and compelling. Constant page turner to find out what the fuck is going on with this woman!

-

In TV, I finished Brilliant Minds (season 2): Unfortunately this suffered kind of a sophomore slump with dropping what seemed to be the main set up plot from season 1 with Wolf's dad and weirdly drawing out and overdramatizing the new psych hospital plot while also breaking up and having main characters leave. I feel like it started to even back out toward the end but not in time to save it from cancellation alas. I will miss Zachary Quinto on my screen.

Also, my internet and cable went out for several hours this afternoon, I'm guessing because of the heat? but I was able to use my phone as a hotspot, so it didn't deter me for long. *wry* I took today off because originally I was supposed to be dog-sitting at my sister's before plans changed, and I decided to keep the 4-day weekend. I'm glad I did. I like my job and I mostly like my coworkers, but I am so tired of people asking me for things. Hopefully, I can get a bit of a respite and a reset.

I hope you are all staying cool if you're in the heatwave. <3

Tall Ships!!! So beautiful!!!

Wednesday reading, also beautiful!

What I've just finished
Six of Crows: A Darker Shore: Letters from Ketterdam by Leigh Bardugo. I don't know why the title is longer than the short story but I loved it! It's an epistolary story, using an investigation of the mysterious captain of The Wraith (tall ships!!!) as the framework, and letters between Kaz and Inej make up many of the documents the investigators are using. Ugh, I love them so much! spoilers )

I really hope this isn't the only time Bardugo chooses to revisit the Dregs and Ketterdam, because I would pay full hardcover price for a full-length, getting the band back together heist novel.

What I'm reading now
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. I'm enjoying it but I only have a very vague recollection of what happened in the main trilogy, so some of it is probably going over my head. And I also realized I haven't read Translation State so hopefully that is not to relevant to this one. I do enjoy how Leckie plays with POV though.

What I'm reading next
As always, who can say?

So I had intended to go out Saturday but the heat was just too much. Thankfully staying in meant I could watch the Hades concert stream which was pretty cool, especially the siren songs. It did make me wanna replay the game, though I was too flop for that (and needed to finish a fall guy quest and still need to clear screencaps) but maybe soon.

And I did end up watching films on tv. I watched Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (probably cause of Disclosure Day, but I really loved the spaceships and it’s nice to have friendly aliens) and Ticket To Paradise (which was pretty good).

Sunday was watching Gone Fishing on Dave (I’m so sad still about finding out Ted died a few weeks back), DND, then just being flop until Mock The Week and Spider Noir. I sense Spider Noir is gonna be one of my fav shows of the year and I have the songs stuck in my head.

Monday mums friend came which, as always, was annoying. I had considered doing the cinema trip after she went but my stomach felt a bit woozy. I think it’s from the chilli/cheeze bread I ate which is odd cause it was fresh.

In the night I did finally get back to Heated Rivalry, which was pretty good and I just wanna give Kip a hug.

Mail came too. Monday had a pretty fox qwertee, along with Exit 8’s blu ray. Then today the Dustin and Steve Funkos came, plus the Skeletor figure too.

And also! The fancy Project Hail Mary Steelbook went live on hmv so I snapped that up! Sure I messed up my orders after (I had to cancel the 4k I had ordered, but accidentally cancelled the soundtrack one instead).

I also did the Apple and Paramount trial subscriptions so if anyone has recs let me know, I think I’m gonna start Widow’s Bay tonight and Strange New Worlds this weekend.

Yesterday morning I had to cover at the library and it was so quiet, usually we get a few people, even if just a delivery but nope no one came. I just read Silverweed Road, finishing the third story (about a jerk con man) and the third (the best one about cuttlefish which was so great).

I had debated doing the cinema trip today and I ended up going so I saw Supergirl and Toy Story 5

Trailers see mostly things I’d seen before but there were new trailers for Cat In The Hat, Spiderman and Minions And Monsters so I do wanna see all of those. Forgotten Island looks pretty good too. I’m not sold on Dog Stars though (which is some post apocalyptic thing which.. eh). I was surprised that there’s a Paw Patrol movie with dinosaurs… and songs by the Backstreet Boys.

Annoyingly I did get caught in the heavy rain coming back so I got home looking drowned. Ugh.

The cinema listings Monday revealed that Bleach is getting an extra few showings (alas no more Ghost In A Shell) and it also revealed that we’re getting Backrooms Everything Must Go which has extra footage so I’m curious. And Perfect Life is out… but only two showings on Monday.

Which is annoying cause that’s when Seapeekay’s subathon is starting (it was meant to be tomorrow). I might miss the start for it, see some other things Friday but we’ll see.

I was gonna watch Wildhood last night (but that was before cinema plans) but I ended up completely worn out and ended up going zz (actually in a break while making this post) so alas I didn’t, hopefully sometime this week.

I might before the next cinema trip do a half year post on the cinema films and thoughts, I might do that before the next trip.

Today’s plan? Finally sort the switch 2 screencaps, go on the pokopia event and then Widow’s Bay and From tonight. Oh and watch the Splatoon direct I missed.

I'm normally all about summer, but the humidity on top of this heatwave is a lot. I'm taking my walks after the sun goes down to avoid giving myself a sunburn and heatstroke, but that means I end up stuck at my desk all day at work without an afternoon break. :(

On the bright side, we're headed for a three-day weekend, so I'll at least get to stay home on Friday. And there is ice cream in my freezer. Still, I can't wait for things to at least dry out a little.

So I did finish season 5 of The Bear last night - instead of the episodes being shambolic and overly long, they were mostly a tight 22 minutes (there were 3 I think that were longer, out of 8) and spoilers )

*

In other news, my sister and brother-in-law took Baby Miss L and her parents to Disney World this week, and I've already gotten adorable photos of them with Winnie the Pooh! Hopefully there will be many more where that came from. *g*

Also, I forgot it was a short work week and made myself a big tray of chicken cutlet parm for lunch/dinner. Oh well, it will still be delicious.

I slept in this morning, but I am still so tired. Luckily it's a short work week and I have a 4-day weekend next week for the 4th.

I got a late start, but I did make blueberry corn muffins and they turned out well, but I think maybe I just prefer to have blueberry or corn muffins? Idk, but I still have corn meal so maybe I'll just make corn muffins next weekend.

I also have cherries which I am excited to eat - there is so much fresh fruit now and all of it was on sale this week, so I had to choose, because I can't eat all of it before it goes bad. And last night, I set up the first coffee granita of the season, and had some earlier and it was so good.

Now I've started watching season 5 of The Bear and will probably try to finish it this weekend so I don't get too spoiled. I also watched that one-off episode Gary but did not enjoy it much. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach have great chemistry, but spoilers ) It had some good needle-drops, though. Anyway, hopefully they stick the landing. I'll guess we'll see!

After that, I have so many other things to watch, so I will probably just end up rewatching something I'm already familiar with so I don't have to make a choice. *wry*

What a week. Between work and the car stuff, I am so tired.

My weekend to-do list, somewhat tongue-in-cheek:

- write 400 words of whatever I want
- sleep as much as I want
- play a bunch of video games
- cook some food at some point

If I do anything productive at all except by accident, I have failed in my mission to Have A Weekend Off.

So the heat has beeen horrendous these past few days. Apparently it’s been the hottest days of June on record which… very much isn’t a good thing. And it’s made things so draining. I’ve had sweat dripping off been unable to sleep with most nights not being able to settle until at least 4am. Which… ugh.

Yesterday was just… ugh though. We got warnings due to the weather so I sat mum down Monday and told her not to do anything, cause I had visions of her overexerting herself without telling me. Sure enough yesterday she’d decided to turn downstairs into an obstacle course yesterday morning which just made me even more exhausted when she called wanting my ‘help’. I’ve told her before the best way of doing things is for me to do things with her from the start (ideally with warning) but for some reason she’s allergic to doing that, expecting me to ‘help’ only when she’s half done and her making things a mess. It was just so frustrating especially with the heat. Like why is she like this?

I have managed to watch a few things though so let’s get into that. (Thoughts under the cut, tales From 85, From ep 2, We’re All Going To The World’s Fair)

As I predicted I didn’t get much from prime day. I just got a Star Wars book, the updated complete locations which has some new stuff from Solo/Andor/Rogue One so I’m curious to see them. (I still need to read the mandalorian guide). Plus I also picked up a Skeletor figure to go with He-Man. And Strange Buildings from the kindle sale (I need to get back to Strange Pictures.) I might get those reduced month subs for things but we’ll see.

I did pick up Two Point Hospital and Campus from the switch sale. I have them on Xbox but they’re not a great game to play with my eyes being bad (and text being small) so hopefully having them on handheld will be better, that is if I go on them and not just get sidetracked

Speaking of games Marvel Snap has been terrible with its crashing, the current season has been so much I did contact support a few weeks back but it feels utterly useless. I’ve done back and forth submitting more info but there’s no real progress it feels. Which is so annoying cause this season has had a new Jeff but I didn’t wanna buy the pass when nothing works well. And by that I mean every single game crashes at least once, which makes some modes impossible

I’m still waiting on the Mandalorian and Grogu soundtrack to come in at hmv but there is Exit 8 on the way so yipee. There’s also a Project Hail Mary Steelbook just announced so I’m hoping it gets a uk release. If so I’ll have to cancel my preorder to get it cause it looks so pretty. Just look at it

I dunno what I’m gonna do with the rest of the night. I was gonna try and watch something but I dunno if I’m in the mood/mindset. I might just flop instead.

Hopefully I am going to see Supergirl tomorrow (with Ghost In The Shell/Bleach) but I am prepared to just just up on it and the anime stuff if the weather is too overpowering. If so I’ll go next week and see Supergirl with Minions And Monsters (yes I wanna see it, it looks fun!) if I do see Supergirl I might watch Minions And Monsters with something else, maybe Toy Story 5.

Anyway, now to flop

Folks may have noticed that the site has been slow for logged-out users over the last while. This is partly because we separate traffic by logged-in, "logged out but have visited the site before", and "logged out, never visited the site before" and assign the fewest resources to the last category (because we're pretty confident the overwhelming majority of it is bot and scraper traffic, even if it's often impossible to say for sure). The flood of garbage traffic is a plague and a scourge the entire internet is dealing with, and it's hitting small sites the hardest as operators get better and better at cloaking their requests to look like real, authentic use. We long ago hit the point where adding more resources is a possible solution (because they just eat them up as soon as we do), and splitting traffic lets us keep the site usable for our actual users without wasting too much server power on garbage.

We've now, lucky us, reached the point where the "logged out, have never visited the site before" path is just flooded all the time, and the "logged out but have visited the site before" path is suffering some of the overflow. We've made some changes to the routing to try to improve things for logged out users who have visited the site before and keep it at "it may be a little bit slow, but at least it works" instead of "it keeps timing out", and we've seen some improvements, but if you're accustomed to browsing the site while logged out, I'm really sorry but it may continue to be a little miserable.

You will get the fastest page loads and the best performance by browsing the site logged in. If you are having trouble loading the front page to log in, bookmark the direct login page. We can't route the front page to the "more power" server pool, because it's a common target for garbage traffic, but we've switched /login over to "more power" and we'll try to keep it there as long as we can unless it starts getting slammed, too.
