Early career? The first years of research or practice are, arguably, the most important. It’s when experience and confidence develop, specialist interests flourish, and professional identity takes shape. It’s also a time of challenge. At The Lancet Group, we are committed to strengthening our engagement with early-career clinicians and academics. Our new Clinical Rounds section has been re-developed with this in mind. We strongly encourage medical students, doctors in training, and others in their early career to contribute to our initiatives. Learn how you can get involved: http://spkl.io/60477yRO7
About us
The Lancet was founded in 1823 by Thomas Wakley and began as an independent, international weekly general medical journal. Since then, The Lancet has sought to address urgent topics, initiate debate, put science into context, and influence decision-makers worldwide. Evolving as a group of health and medical journals, we retain the belief that the best science must lead to better lives. Visit our website to learn more.

Congratulations to the winners of the first The Elsevier Foundation-Lancet Evidence to Impact Awards, recognising implementation science research that's changing outcomes in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Australia.
The inaugural The Lancet Group–Elsevier Foundation Evidence to Impact Awards have found their first winners, and the work they've done is extraordinary. 🇹🇿 In Tanzania, Essential Emergency and Critical Care coverage rose from 33% to 77% after 1,000+ healthcare providers were trained, with a 32% reduction in inpatient mortality – thanks to the effort of a dedicated team at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). 🇸🇱 In Sierra Leone, 2YoungLives reduced maternal and perinatal mortality by 48% among adolescent girls – a group disproportionately excluded from traditional care. 🇦🇺 Across rural Australia, the ECORRA Trial led by Deakin University is co-designing context-specific solutions to address a geographic survival gap of up to 72% and will embed these into a network of rural health services to drive equitable cancer care. Congratulations to all three winning teams! Learn more at: http://spkl.io/60457yO0X #ImplementationScience #HealthEquity #GlobalHealth #InclusiveHealth

Women have unique presentations and consequences of haematological disorders, including anaemia, undiagnosed and undertreated bleeding disorders, and hormone-related thrombosis and bleeding❗ 📢A new The Lancet Haematology Commission looks at what can be done! ⚠️ Many disparities between males and females begin in adolescence, with heavy menstrual bleeding the first sign of a bleeding disorder, but most females are not screened for these diseases. A 16-year mean diagnostic delay vs men with bleeding disorders begins here. 🫄 In the reproductive years, the prevalence of anaemia is 4x higher in women than in men. Pregnant women are at risk of many preventable and treatable haematological conditions, including iron-deficiency anaemia, VTE, and obstetric haemorrhage. 🩸Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of post-partum mortality. During perimenopause, women are at continued risk of erratic and heavy menstrual bleeding, and the lack of low- or no-clot-risk hormonal therapies limits treatment options for some women during menopause. 💡To address these many issues, the Commission sets out ten recommendations for regulators, international health bodies, professional societies, funders, and governments. 🔍Explore the full Commission and related articles here: https://lnkd.in/d-y7Y25a International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH)

The 2020 WHO–UNICEF–Lancet Commission called for children's voices at the centre of all policy. Five years on, Children in All Policies 2030 reports back: eight lessons on what works—and what still stands in the way. “For too long, political and policy-making paradigms have abruptly dismissed the rights and perspectives of children and future generations”, say the authors. Proud to present our very special July issue, dedicated to Patient-Centred Reproductive Medicine. Alongside an exciting collection of original research and Reviews, this issue also features thought-provoking Comments and has already generated extensive media coverage. Huge thanks to my colleagues Ben Burwood Sarah Passey, Hannah Taylor Lewis, reviewers and authors for your contributions A few months back, #WHO issued its first-ever guideline on infertility containing good practice statements, strong recommendations, and conditional recommendations. The guideline highlights the necessity to shift focus from costly diagnosis and treatment to prevention for the general population and those at risk. Our Perspective piece focuses on prevention, diagnosis and treatment`. At the same time, the guideline calls for political support and a rights-based approach to implementation, supported by appropriate policy, regulation, and financing, to help individuals achieve their reproductive goals safely. https://lnkd.in/eAEfmnfA A fantastic news piece by Udani Samarasekera on Concerns over reproductive rights as pronatalism increases: https://lnkd.in/eVcj5pRg Measuring what trials miss: decision modelling for value-based reproductive health https://lnkd.in/eEa8u-nU Reimagining reproductive medicine in the age of AI https://lnkd.in/e3BQ2cJS Press coverage: Most IVF ‘add-on’ treatments have no effect on fertility or remain unproven, study says | IVF | The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/gy22hpsT treatments-have-no-effect-on-fertility Services Sold to Boost I.V.F. Infertility affects approximately one in six couples worldwide. Since the birth of Louise Brown in 1978, via in vitro fertilisation (IVF), 13 million babies have been born via assisted reproductive technology cycles. But the rise of IVF add-ons has become one of the most pressing issues in fertility medicine. ESHRE’s 2023 Good Practice Recommendations reported that most add-ons did not have sufficient evidence for routine clinical use. “Every individual who enters a fertility clinic arrives as a whole person—with their own history and sense of what success means. Personalised, patient-centred, and empowered care is not an aspiration; it is the standard that every patient deserves.” – The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health.
