S�o Tom� and Pr�ncipe was a Portuguese colony at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1951 it was made an overseas province of Portugal. It became independent on 1975-07-12.

The municipalities are further subdivided into distritos (districts). Pr�ncipe is coextensive with its district, but S�o Tom� has six districts.

  1. Pr�ncipe consists of the islands of Pr�ncipe, Caro�o, Bombom, and the Pedras Tinhosas.
  2. S�o Tom� consists of S�o Tom� and R�las islands.
