MTV video music awards nominations announced

NEW YORK, July 14 -- Aerospace, Beastie Boys, R.E.M., and Bjork are the most nominated artists for the 1994 MYV Video Music Awards, which will be presented Sept. 8 in New York for the first time in eight years. Roseanne Arnold will host the 11th annual nationally televised awards show at Radio City Music Hall which will feature performances by Aerosmith, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and other artists, according to plans released Thursday by Doug Herzog, MTV programming head. 'We're thrilled to have the awards back in New York after being in Los Angeles for eight years,' Herzog said. 'We always said we'd bring the awards back here when the Eagles reunited, the Rangers won the Stanley Cup and Tony Bennett did 'Unplugged'.' The return of the awards certifies New York as Music City, home of the Grammy Awards for three years out of the past four and the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, Herzog said. Nominees for the best music video of the year were R.E.M. for 'Everybody Hurts,' Aerosmith for 'Cryin',' Beastie Boys for 'Sabotage,' and Nirvana for 'Heart Shaped Box.' Beck, Bjork, Counting Crows, Green Day, Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories and Me'Shell Ndege'Ocello were nominated for best new artist. Veteran singer Bennett, whose career has been reborn as the idol of young audiences, was nominated for best male video for 'Steppin' Out With My Baby,' along with Beck for 'Loser,' Bruce Springsteen for 'Streets of Philadelphia,' and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for 'Mary Jane's Last Dance.'

'MTV has just hypnotized the whole world,' said Bennett, 67, when informed of his nomination. 'But it's home is in the Big Apple. It has such a history. It's definitely where it's at.' Nominees for the best female video award were Bjork for 'Human Behaviour,' Sheryl Crow for 'Leaving Las Vegas,' Janet Jackson for 'If,' and 'Me'Sehh Ndege'Ocello for 'If That's Your Boyfriend.' Other nominations included: Best Group Video: R.E.M., 'Everybody Hurts'; Beastie Boys, 'Sabotage'; Aerosmith, 'Cryin''; Green Day, 'Longview.' Best Rap Video: Collio, 'Fantastick Voyage'; Cypress Hill, 'Insane in the Brain'; 'Dr. Dre, 'Let Me Ride'; and Snoop Doggy Dogg, 'Doggy Dogg World.' Best Dance Video: US3, 'Cataloop'; En Vogue, 'Runaway'; Crystal Waters, '100 Percent Pure Love'; Sant-N-Pepa/En Vogue, 'Whatta Man'; Janet Jackson, 'If'. Best Metal/Hard Rock Video: Aerosmith, 'Cryin''; Anthrax, 'Black Lodge'; Rollins Band, 'Liar'; Soundgarden, 'Black Hole Sun'. Best Alternative Music Video: Beck, 'Loser'; Green Day, ' 'Longview'; Nirvana, 'Heart Shaped Box'; Smashing Pumpkins, 'Disarm'.
