Media and Information Literacy
This is a free, self-directed online course for anyone with a thirst for knowledge, who may want to know more about the media landscape in the Philippines, along with risks/opportunities in the digital world. Learners will develop critical thinking skills to scrutinize media content and sources; practical skills related to news gathering, research, and fact checking; and get a better grasp of the media’s influence on public opinion, and how civil society-media collaboration can work.

Election Coverage Crash Course
This is an online course exclusively for Rappler program participants and volunteers who will help in the coverage of the 2025 midterm elections. Learners will develop essential skills for covering elections effectively. This includes spotting election stories, comprehensively reporting and writing about them accurately using multimedia methods, verifying election-related information, and detecting disinformation. The course also covers ethical journalism practices, sourcing reliable data, and understanding the impact of media on voter perceptions and democracy.

Chay F. Hofileña is among Rappler’s founders and is currently Investigative Editor and Head of Training. She obtained her graduate degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism and is a lecturer at the undergraduate level of the Ateneo de Manila University, teaching News Writing and Investigative Journalism.
Gemma has worked along the intersection of editorial and tech systems for nearly 2 decades now. She leads Rappler’s disinformation and platforms research and is concurrently head of Digital Services.
Don Kevin Hapal is the Head of Data and Innovation at The Nerve, a digital forensics consultancy born from Rappler’s investigative work on disinformation. He previously founded and led Rappler’s Data and Forensics Team, directing the newsroom’s AI strategy and winning the 2023 global AI in Journalism Challenge. His work focuses on how disinformation and narratives are weaponized, giving him a unique, real-world perspective on the power and risks of AI.
Miriam Grace “Gigi” Go is the managing editor of Rappler. She is a veteran journalist with extensive experience in investigative journalism and coverage of local governance, elections, and political campaigns.
After a decade of experience as a reporter, Pia Ranada now heads Rappler’s Community division, leading civic engagement and partnerships with communities and groups, with the overall goal of building trust between journalists and the public they serve.
Jodesz Gavilan is the lead researcher for Rappler. She has produced investigative and in-depth reports on human rights and impunity, particularly on the quest for justice of victims of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs and war on dissent.
Pauline Macaraeg is the lead forensics researcher at Rappler. Her work focuses on analyzing data-driven online trends, mapping disinformation actors and networks, and decoding the spread of information across the digital space. She has an academic foundation in Data Science through her MS studies at the Asian Institute of Management.
Patrisha Estrada is the data science lead at Rappler, where she drives the development of data science-driven products that support the company’s goals. Her expertise includes social media analysis, digital behavior, and audience intelligence. She obtained her MS in Data Science from the Asian Institute of Management.
Paterno R. Esmaquel II is a senior multimedia reporter covering religion for Rappler. He is also a journalism instructor at the University of Santo Tomas. He obtained his MA Journalism from Ateneo de Manila University and MSc Asian Studies (Religions in Plural Societies) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
JC Gotinga is Rappler’s senior multimedia producer perpetually obsessed with finding new stories and new ways and forms of telling those stories. His coverage highlights include the West Philippine Sea, the Marawi siege, and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. His work has appeared on CNN Philippines, CNN International, Al Jazeera English, Vice World News, TRT World, and DW News. Nowadays he loses sleep figuring out how to do journalism on TikTok.
Kit Posadas is a brand & communications strategist, and is currently the Head of Strategy of data forensics company, The Nerve. Her expertise lies in making insights from big data actionable for brands — be it for reputation management, communications planning, or marketing and branding campaigns.
Ailla Dela Cruz is a Rappler researcher focused on fighting disinformation and data curation. She has been a fact-checker since 2022, guiding Rappler interns and contributors in fact-checking. She is also involved in MovePH’s fact-checking workshops besides taking on her “Teacher Rubilyn” role.
