জার্মান[ক] (জার্মান: Deutsche, উচ্চারণ [ˈdɔɪ̯t͡ʃə] ⓘ) হল মধ্য ইউরোপের স্থানীয় জার্মানীয় জাতিগোষ্ঠী[৩০][৩১][৩২][৩৩] যারা সাধারণ জার্মান বংশোদ্ভব, সংস্কৃতি ও ইতিহাসের অংশীদার। জার্মান ভাষা হল সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ জার্মান জনগোষ্ঠীর সাধারণ মাতৃভাষা।

ইংরেজি ভাষায় জার্মান শব্দটি ঐতিহাসিকভাবে মধ্যযুগের শেষভাগ থেকে রোমান সাম্রাজ্যের জার্মানভাষী জনগোষ্ঠীকে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হত।[note ৩] ষোড়শ শতাব্দীতে রোমান সাম্রাজ্যের অভ্যন্তরে প্রোটেস্টান্ট সংস্কার শুরু হবার পর থেকে জার্মান সমাজকে ক্যাথলিক-প্রোটেস্ট্যান্ট বিভাজন দ্বারা চিহ্নিত করা হত।[৩৪] বিশ্বের প্রায় ১০০ মিলিয়ন স্থানীয় জার্মানভাষীর মধ্যে[৩৫] প্রায় ৮০ মিলিয়ন নিজেদের জার্মান হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে। এছাড়া মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, ব্রাজিল (প্রধানত দেশটির দক্ষিণাঞ্চলে), আর্জেন্টিনা, কানাডা, দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা, সোভিয়েত-উত্তর রাষ্ট্রসমূহ (বিশেষত রাশিয়া ও কাজাখস্তান) ও ফ্রান্সে আরও ৮০ মিলিয়ন জার্মান বংশোদ্ভূত জনগোষ্ঠী রয়েছে।[note ৪] ফলে মোট জার্মান জনসংখ্যা প্রয়োগকৃত মাপদণ্ডের ওপর নির্ভর করে (স্থানীয় জার্মানভাষী, একক-বংশজাত নৃতাত্ত্বিক জার্মান, আংশিক বংশজাত জার্মান ইত্যাদি) প্রায় ১০০ থেকে ১৫০ মিলিয়নের বেশি হতে পারে।[১] বর্তমানে, সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ জার্মানভাষী দেশগুলোর—যেগুলো পূর্বে রোমান সাম্রাজ্যের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল (যেমন: অস্ট্রিয়া, সুইজারল্যান্ড, লিখটেনস্টাইন ও অন্যান্য ঐতিহাসিকভাবে সংযুক্ত দেশ যেমন: লুক্সেমবুর্গ)—জনগণ প্রায়শই নিজেদের রাষ্ট্রীয় পরিচয়ে চিহ্নিত করে এবং অনেকক্ষেত্রেই নিজেদের নৃতাত্ত্বিক জার্মান হিসেবে আত্মপরিচয় দেয় না।[৩৬]
