I'm not currently reading fic, and I did not participate (either in organizing or writing), but regardless I am super fucking pumped about [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman's New Year's Fic Exchange, which went live today. There are THREE stories featuring Guinan (ugh, so excited; if this were starting again today I would have to join so I could request Guinan/Picard backstory fic, I rewatched "Time's Arrow" last month and I need to knoooow)!! TWO Jadzia Dax femslash fics (be still my ships-Jadzia-with-everyone* heart)! And of course all manner of things featuring AOS/TOS ladies both famous and obscure.

WNW is my baby, the thing I am most proud of having made in fandom (and to everyone I've seen say they wished there was an equivalent in their fandom: make one. please. do it.), but I've mostly been a silent partner for a good while now. It runs because of the members who joined and the other mods who make stuff like this happen on a regular basis. All women in Star Trek, all the time. What could be awesomer? How could I be prouder?

You guys rock. <3

Ah, life! Is full of things! Things like dog infections, and new phones, and movies, and music, and books, and OBSESSING OVER HIPSTER WHO OMG, and Los Gigantes! And too goddamn many appointments with healthcare professionals! Hence today's schedule which is full of "being lazy." And jumbled multi-everything posts.

- First, here's Where No Woman's new drabblefest for which I did the prompts! (I had to wait five months to post that set, no lie). You should come play! Also maybe take this poll about the ficathon we're doing.

Additionally, I put out a call for AO3 and/or Dreamwidth advisors for future WNW endeavors -- I do dream of someday moving the comm over although that won't happen without lots of planning and consultation with all involved, and I just don't have the energy to figure it all out myself -- and thought I'd mention it here too! I am in fact ALSO looking for possible partners in crime for the radical Star Trek politics comm dedicated to NON-HUMANS, which is currently sitting empty at [community profile] oldlifeoldcivilizations, in time for 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth, so if you are interested in subverting either Trek ladies or Trek aliens in the world of open-source, please do give me a shout.

- All this reminds me that [personal profile] lodessa got me Star Trek Online for my birfday (joy!!!!!) and I can't play it because my HD won't Boot Camp (DESPAIR). ;__;

- Sandals. Do you wear sandals? I live in a wet-winter climate and my dog is an adventuresome kind of dog, so right when the rains began this winter I had this uncharacteristic flash of practicality and bought some nice rubber wellies that enabled me to keep up with Rue through all the muddy bogs she so loves. NOW it is spring, sun and warmth are starting to be a thing, and the sad Californian truth is, I am offended on a deep personal level when forced to wear socks. But the only sandals I've ever had were Birkenstocks in my crunchier youth (which later became extremely uncomfortable) and these FloJo flipflops I've been rocking for ten years. I am thinking about getting some practical, nice-looking, walk-worthy sandals.

This is difficult because my feet are kinda faily! I need serious arch support, and I have bunions which means individual toe loops tend to... miss my big toe completely. I would also very much prefer any sandals to be ethically sourced and not leather, and I'm prepared to spend a bit because I think good shoes are generally worth it. Where have you found sandals success? I feel not like myself asking this?

- Per [personal profile] wordsatourbacks's request: a zip of 44 Liz Phair rareties!

Heyyyyy guess who just mysteriously spilled green tea in her Macbook trackpad? The same trackpad that was replaced a mere four months ago after a mineral water incident? OH GOD APPLECARE DON'T KILL ME. (They gave me a free new powercord just last week!) Cry!

so here we are on an ... eMachine. With Vista. let us not discuss that any further.

What I do want to discuss though is Star Trek. Specifically, the hypothetical next television series. Yesterday I finished my watchthrough of Deep Space Nine (SUCH A GOOD SHOW, GUYS, SUCH A GOOD SHOW) and while I am in no way equipped to write out all my thoughts & feelings on that matter in a DWth text box on an eMachine that is not mine, I would really like other people's opinions on what the next Trek show could be and I think this is a good time to ask. DS9 being both political and Alpha Quadrant-based it is in some ways the obvious jumping-off-point for the continuing larger story of Trek despite having Voyager, Enterprise, and two movies coming in after. no specific spoilers for any existing Trek, I just want you guys to come on this ~journey of the imagination with meeeee )

:DDDDD

P.S. What Trek should I watch next (I saw all of TNG as a child)? Show your work.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAWLES!!!

I also drawed you a picture of Uhura based on this one but I eated it it turned out fucking terrifying so I'm not posting that publicly, haha. AS IT TURNS OUT when you haven't tried to draw a person in five years, your abilities degrade somewhat. But it was really fun to just pick up a pen and try to make a picture. Lol remember the first decade and a half of my life when I wanted to be an artist? Those were the days! So maybe I will take up drawing more! Or not! WE'LL SEE

- Snowflake cookies! They were cute. Thanks to those who sent me one. I didn't send as many as I wanted -- I meant to do more, but then LJ was being a butt and today announced that the comment notification dam was indeed related to the snowflake flurry. And, um, something in me snapped! LiveJournal is just a super shitty company now! That's not how you run things. And it doesn't make any sense for me to feel obligated to pay more money to them for performing a service I think they are terrible at, when I am really admiring what Dreamwidth is doing, AND my extra userpics just expired, and my paid account here is about to.

SO fuck it, I'm giving my money to Dreamwidth and will begin using that as my primary journal shortly. I still have to work out all the logistics (I will be importing to here for the time being) but if you have a DW reading list, feel free to add me over there and conduct yr business with me there -- I'm [personal profile] allchildren. And if you start getting comments here from that account, don't be alarmed, it's just me. (Obviously, I would love to build my neighborhood over there. If you are on the bubble of switching come with me! If you need an invite code, I'll hook it up! Whatever! YOU GUYS YOU CAN NOW RENAME YOUR ICONS ON DW WITHOUT LOSING THE PIC IN PLACE. POST TO COMMUNITIES MAINTAINERS-ONLY. HAVE 250 ICONS AT THE PREMIUM LEVEL. I love themmmmmmm.)

(- Unrelatedly if you need a Google Wave invite, I have those too.)

- Glee! Is the worst! Good riddance! Ugh.

- Parks and Rec! Did not make me tear up tonight. Did not. You can't prove anything >:(

- DS9! Season three is complete! I love it! I still have four seasons of this show to go! FUCK YEAH BAJOR AND CARDASSIA AND MY HUSBAND CAPTAIN BENJAMIN SISKO (oh godddd ♥____♥).

Alien community is not forgotten or neglected; it'll just be a little while before I can put it all the way together.

- From Carrie & Amber:

if you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often or ever) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me.

it can be anything you want -- good or bad -- BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

Hayyy!! It's my 200th post in this journal. And today is also Cameron the Macbook's first birthday. Happy meaningless milestones to me! *blows out 200 candles?*

I. OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS I MADE ANOTHER STAR TREK PICSPAM AND I AM SUPER EXCITED ABOUT IT. This one is dedicated to the (mostly unnamed and often lines-less) women of Star Trek XI and if you like that movie, space underwear, future fashion, giving stories to the storyless, or...pictures..., maybe you will like my picspam too! :D

I have yet moar STXI posts (including another picspam) coming up soon I think. I'm like a machine! A very slow, detail-oriented, jerky nerd machine.

II. I have a tumblr! I don't 100% understand tumblr but it seems to be kind of a visual twitter/greader type thing of going "fuck yeah" to hilarious internet inanities, so... sign me up? (I did.)

Anyway, I am offyougoapparently. It is not much yet! But perhaps it can be.

Lady Gaga vs. Journey - Don't Stop, Just Dance (video) (This is a perfect song for Skins, btw.)
Beyonce feat. Lady Gaga - Video Phone (video) (*_________*)
Beyonce - Diva (video)
Lady Gaga - Teeth (where is my lost girl vampires vid to this is MY FRIGGING QUESTION)

IV. Over the Thanksgiving break [livejournal.com profile] rawles, [livejournal.com profile] carrielh, and I took it upon ourselves to rewatch all of The Vampire Diaries with [livejournal.com profile] latropita, who needed supervising. IT IS SO GREAT YOU GUYS. Yes, it is a cheesy teen drama created by the dude behind Dawson's Creek. Yes, the first two episodes are basically exactly what you'd expect. And then in episode three shit starts getting pretty real and from there on out just DOES NOT STOP -- basically, so far I find the entire series can be summed up as "variations on a theme of What's My Line." Racism against lost girls aside, a-at least they're there for me to love?! And all the AUs it sparks in my miiiind. I love Parks & Rec with all my told-you-so heart and my affection for HIMYM remains undiminished by unpopular story decisions, but I've got to admit: TVD is my favorite show this season. Because harem. ♥____♥

V. To renew paid LJ account or switch to DW? I think they're doing legit amazing things and I want to support that and I CAN HAVE OVER 100 MORE ICONS THERE (my icon angst is epic of late), buuuut still no flist import or DW-specific client. And most everybody, plus my baby [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman (and how do you effectively conduct a community on two different sites?) is still here. IDK :/

VI. Sigh: I am fully aware of my being approximately six months behind in answering comments. I might even do something about it soon. Inboxes beware.

You know how on Star Trek (and sci-fi in general, but I am in too good a mood to contemplate octagonal paper right now) sometimes they do these really unnecessary and hilariously impractical things to illustrate how ~futuristic shit is? Some things!

- I made a picspam of female guest stars during the first season and a half of DS9 for [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman! I didn't crosspost it here because I am a lazyface, but if you like Star Trek or rad alien chicks or things I do, it may be relevant to your interests!

- HAPPY FOURTH PXVERSARY, MY PXIES <333

- My external HD John Connorbot is on the outs with Cameron. :(((( Anybody have experience with Western Digital Passport HDs and Macs? I submitted a support thingy but fucking arghhhh.

- I watched HIMYM! Rough Patch )

- I watched Dexter! general series-wide ranting )

And so now in Slack Tide )

- now I am a bit capslocked out to discuss other TV, so let's just say "OHHHH MAD MEN ♥____♥" and "be less terrible, Fringe!" and assume everything else is going along as it normally does except wait

- The Vampire Diaries has some 'splainin to do, like why it... )

- I stilllll haven't figured out my Yuletide signup yet, cry.

So yeah, those were some things indeed! tris out

Hay guys. On the off chance that you are looking for someone to say nice things about even though she has not really been on lj for like three months but she did that one thing that one time, you can do that! Here! J-just so you know I guess omg these things never get any easier do they.

And while I am crawling out of my hermitage to do this (for lo, nice-things-saying is a two-way-street), I will also take requests for topics of discussion in future hypothetical posts, as maybe that will help me feel like less of a wordless zombie all the time, IDK. P.S. STAR TREK GAG REEL *_________* WHERE IS MY DVDEEEEee?!

ETA: incredibly minor himym spoiler that is not actually a spoiler )
allbackups: (⁂ MORIBUND)
Hey, remember that movie I love apparently? STAR TREK!! Apparently I have some meta about it idk either blame my poodle for making me actually write it out.

It's a two hour movie that has to introduce newbies to the world and the cast, give oldtimers moments with each of their beloved characters, blow shit up because it's a summer action movie, and make viewers Feel Things because unless you are Terminator Salvation and therefore ABOVE BASIC MOVIE MANNERS (no, McG, you're not) it's considered polite for a movie to have some kind of emotional core.

A tall order, especially when you consider how much time has been alloted to lens flares. Kurtzman & Orci's solution is simple: instead of putting that entire burden on the "star" (Kirk), they split up protagonist duties. They do it sneaky-like, and in an incredibly clear binary: Kirk is the body, and Spock is the heart.

Kirk & Spock, doing some stuff and feeling some things respectively: STRUCTURE!! )

and what this has to do with Spock/Uhura )

P.S. Oh memes! WHAT SHOULD I WRITE?, and we are pretending here that I have an ounce of creativity left in me. Have at: the hilariouser the better.

ooh, WIP meme. (All my creative energy has left me, causing great problems ficathon-ward. Possibly it is wrestling bears in the wild or some shit. SO THIS IS AN ENTRY OF GREAT NOSTALGIA FOR A MONTH AND A HALF AGO ;_;)

IF I ever actually finish any Space Boyfriends fic, most of these will probably end up knitted together into one larger story (well, that and Future History of California which is probably a different thing altogether and I am really marketing deceptively here). But currently they are in distressingly discrete pieces, and since the chances of me actually writing the bulk of this story are not awesome anyway, let's do it this way.

Huh, it's been like a week, and I still am having trouble composing a post that isn't "[livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman!!11!" I am pretty bemused at how my falling headfirst into Trek fandom was precipitated by a sudden and disarming obsession with BOYFRIENDS IN SPACE/omg actors and yet within a month I have completely been taken over by ladies who are barely in the text, but I am not complaining. It is awesome! Also, it has helped me feel my fanfiction is not permanently broken (though I have, sadly, already reached that point where reading it is a challenge), as for the AOS drabblefest I managed to meet my goal of a ficlet for each of the four women I felt most done wrong by the movie:

And so many others wrote so much awesomeness, I've really just been rolling around in joy and bein' joyful. This week is a drabblefest dedicated to the ladies of DS9, which I feel less equipped to write for, but you should check it out maybe. :D?

I do have non-WNW creative Trek thingies to produce still, and also developing thoughts about Trek as utopia and my favorite type of dystopia being the kind that is perfect on the surface, and how sci-fi creates convincing/unconvincing futurism. these thoughts are still not done baking )

Aaaand all that is really just a distraction from the future I need to be focusing on, which involves cybernetic organisms and nuclear winter and big guns and crazyfaces named Connor and/or Reese. SIGH. Maybe I should be asking for an injection of Terminator thinkiness instead. And, uh, rewatching shit. This life of sci-fi, so demanding.

Hobo out...?

You know what is awesome? Rewatching the geeky 90s television that made you into the late-aughts nerd you are today. I'm halfway through the first season of Xena and have one episode to go on the second disc of DS9. Last night [livejournal.com profile] rawles and I watched the episode where Q and Vash showed up and were both missing their boyf Picard and wreaked havoc and were the best. Besssssst. So if in the next week I make it a point to rewatch all Q episodes of TNG, and also write Vash fic, don't say you didn't see it coming.

You know what else is awesome? [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman has 112 members in two days. MERE EMOTICONS CANNOT EXPRESS MY JOY. <3

You know what is NOT awesome? Wrist pains. There is something manifestly wrong with the way I type on Cameron, because I have been getting persistent pains in the side of my left wrist. I know you're supposed to work at a desk, but I dun wanna :( Should I get a lap desk? Some kind of ergonomic wrist rest? Or perhaps a brace? People who have been using laptops and particularly Macbooks for longer than I: what do you recommend?

Sometimes, a person feels some things. Things like "why the fuck can't I find more Winona Kirk fic?" And things like ;_____; in reaction to same, and also the fact that she needs to look for it at all because Winona isn't even NAMED in the fucking movie and disappears after the first 15 minutes. (This person may have also just sat through an otherwise very nice Pixar movie wherein there is one speaking female role and she's dead, and then read this.) This traditionally girlcentric person, though she is very happy with her new slash OTP and crushes on every boy, can't just pretend that everything is fine and this is her ideal fandom after all, can she?

She can try. But it's not gonna work for long. So:

Hellooooo. How is everybody? My brain has officially been eaten by Star Trek, which is a little distressing for me but kind of very fun so I'm just trying to roll with it. I normally almost never read fic (for reasons that are once again becoming obvious to me as I have pathetically low imaginative stamina for it), but I am regularly dipping my toes into Trek fic particularly concerning one James T. Kirk (OH SELF D:) and particularlier his relationship with obvious troo luv 4eva Bones McCoy. If these things are relevant to your interests, recs are as always at my trisrex delicious, which is somewhat incomplete but I'm working on it, damn.

Between "getting really excited about boyslash," "seeking out lots of fic," and "being interested in a movie fandom at all" I've performed some kind of trifecta of shit I normally never do, so... exciting times?! (I have so much more to say about all of this, but my brain is tired and confused about things. *hold music*)

AND, speaking of Trek fic, the evidently fabulously talented [livejournal.com profile] irrel awesomely drew a couple fanart sketches for my Jimmy T + Uhura fic. Look! Loooook!!

a. My favorite thing about that character.
b. My least favorite thing about that character.
c. One person I would ship them with in their own ‘verse.
d. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.
e. One crossover universe for them I think would be even neater.
f. Their ship from hell.
g. One alternate universe life they lead.

However today is his birthday regardless and in times like these, it's worth noting. And voicing your support for Arnold to be less of a dick, idk.

2. TREKKIE/ERS OF THE FLIST: Can you recommend episodes of Trek that deal with life on Earth (academy included but not necessary)? Any canon though TOS, TNG, and DS9 are preferable. I'm interested in geopolitical boundaries, industry, day to day life, etc: basically the anthropology of the 24th century Earth. Do these episodes even exist? I appeal to your expertise.

3. BOOK PEOPLE OF THE FLIST: Can you recommend chapter books appropriate for kids around age 10, who are reading below grade level? more details )
