Scribbling in the Margins

So I booted up my laptop because I expected to need it when my student showed up for a conference, only to find out that he's canceling on me!

So here, have Friday morning post of miscellaney in his stead.

First up! Folks who've been following this journal know that I've been participating in ladiesbigbang. Well! Final drafts are in, and there is a desperate need for pinch-hitting on the complement front. You can find out more here, but a complement is defined as a work that is associated with the original submission, in any other allowable format. So if someone posted a fic, you could podfic it, write meta about it, make icons for it, do a soundtrack for it, the sky is the limit. And the mods are very clear that a little something for even a part of the whole work is lovely. So! If that strikes your fancy and you want to contribute to someone's project about an awesome lady, head over and check out the details!

Next on the agenda, dw_codesharing is the happening place right now; if you have spare invite codes without a designated purpose for them, drop them off here! LJ's recent fuckery seems to be inspiring people.

white_lotus: An Avatar: The Last Airbender comm. I'm particularly fond of the recent discussion post that was done (primarily) in haiku.

leftoverresearchquarterly: Ever done research for a fic or something that you ended up not using, but it was really neat and you thought about shoving it in there anyway just because it was so cool and you did all that work anyway? Put it here instead.

ladiesbigbang: A Big Bang devoted to awesome ladies! Posting starts September 10th.

academy_of_words: A place for academics to post about their daily writing and daily lives in the venting posts that go up every day. Enormously soothing.

academia: A more general usage kind of a comm for academics.

Saw the best thing ever on the Latest Things feed, which is this post in so_sue_me.

If you don't wanna go look, the idea is to tag things on AO3 with the tag women being awesome. Which is a splendid idea, don't you think? And now you can edit the metadata on stuff at AO3, which goes much faster than editing the work as a whole. I just went through and tagged most of my fic and my scant few bookmarks in all of ten minutes flat.

I'm finding the daily writing posts and the daily rant/rave posts very therapeutic; if you're a grad student or faculty, you might too!

hooked_on_heroines: "This is a community focused on writing women in fiction- original fiction or fanfiction- and more specifically, writing women who are awesome. In some way, in her own way, she is awesome- she may be the heroine, she may not, she may be sleeping with someone really hot, she may not. But she is, in a word, awesome." A meta community that's turning up some excellent and thoughtful posts.

pioneer_woman_cooks_feed: Not dial-up friendly, but if you like gorgeous pictures of step-by-step recipes, this is an awesome feed.
