starspray: Frodo reading beneath a tree (Frodo Reading)
[personal profile] starspray
I've been reading things! The library's summer reading program is a great motivator, honestly. I might even get a(nother) tote bag out of it. Mostly a bunch of Sherlock Holmes short stories, because I bought a copy of The Return of Sherlock Holmes from a library sale like two years ago and didn't pick it up until this past week. Maybe by the end of this I can return to my SH/Silm crossover fic that's been languishing. Anyway:

Sherlock Holmes stories, most of which I quite enjoyed:
  • The Adventure of the Empty House
  • The Adventure of the Norwood Builder
  • The Adventure of the Dancing Men
  • The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist
  • The Adventure of the Priory School
  • The Adventure of Black Peter
  • The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
Other books:

Smith of Wootton-Major, by Tolkien - A perennial favorite, and I finally found my copy of it again!

Farmer Giles of Ham
, by Tolkien - Thought I might as well reread this one too since it's in the same book as Smith. It's not my favorite, but it's fun.

The Vampyre, by John Polidori - I've been meaning to read this one for ages. It was...fine. I can see why Polidori is really only famous because he was associated with the Shelleys and Byron.

The Goblin Emperor, by Katherine Addison - Another perennial favorite and a comfort read. <3

Slippery Creatures, by KJ Charles - Fun spy stuff in post-WWI London! I enjoyed it and have put in an ILL request for the next book in the series.

autobotscoutriella: Klavier Gavin and Daryan Crescend in silhouette, from the concert at the beginning of Turnabout Serenade (gavinners)
[personal profile] autobotscoutriella
It's Turnabout Serenade week (the dates of the concert/court case from Ace Attorney 4 case 3), and I don't have any fic written for it! (In my defense, it's because I've been so busy writing the sequels to the follow-up I already wrote to that case. Sonata is my "look how much I love Turnabout Serenade" fic, it's a tough act to follow.)

I could always polish up and post the missing scene from until I bring you home on AO3, and maybe pick a Klavier/Daryan kink meme prompt to fill. I need sleep before I do any of that, but come on, it's my favorite Ace Attorney case, it'd be really nice to do something. (Also I think my neighbors are finally out of fireworks, so maybe I can stop staying up until 3 AM now.)

I am so glad my neighbors are enjoying their fireworks. Someone might as well have a good time with the colorful midnight explosions, because the cats and I certainly are not. :|

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. Incisive fictional look at the whole trad wife thing. I enjoyed the hell out of this. The narrator is supremely unlikeable but it is on purpose and compelling. Constant page turner to find out what the fuck is going on with this woman!

-

In TV, I finished Brilliant Minds (season 2): Unfortunately this suffered kind of a sophomore slump with dropping what seemed to be the main set up plot from season 1 with Wolf's dad and weirdly drawing out and overdramatizing the new psych hospital plot while also breaking up and having main characters leave. I feel like it started to even back out toward the end but not in time to save it from cancellation alas. I will miss Zachary Quinto on my screen.

Final Three Days

Today starts the final three days of our inventory liquidation/Going Out of Business sale. Will we have sold everything? Nowhere close. But we've moved a LOT of product, and these last few days will move a lot more. Shelving has started to move, so we've got gaps in our rows of metal shelving. A lot of inventory has gone to new homes also. It's not perfect-but it's damned good. Of course, I haven't had a "day off" since the sale started, - April 5th. If's primarily why you haven't heard much from me these past few months.

So, as I head into the home stretch, know I've been thinking about all of you. I'm hoping to get back to a "normal" routine soon, and catch up on a LOT of missed sleep. I wouldn't mind gaining back a bit of weight also, I've lost almost 30 pounds in the months since we started the sale.

Anyway, just wanted to check in with all of you. *hugs* Enjoy your 4th of July weekend, we'll be open until the 4th, then the doors are locked for good.

I'm normally all about summer, but the humidity on top of this heatwave is a lot. I'm taking my walks after the sun goes down to avoid giving myself a sunburn and heatstroke, but that means I end up stuck at my desk all day at work without an afternoon break. :(

On the bright side, we're headed for a three-day weekend, so I'll at least get to stay home on Friday. And there is ice cream in my freezer. Still, I can't wait for things to at least dry out a little.

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?
- “O Me! O Life!” by Walt Whitman

I mean, this game is great, I'm having a good time, but ohmygod there are so many ways to die in space and I am so bad at these controls.

What a week. Between work and the car stuff, I am so tired.

My weekend to-do list, somewhat tongue-in-cheek:

- write 400 words of whatever I want
- sleep as much as I want
- play a bunch of video games
- cook some food at some point

If I do anything productive at all except by accident, I have failed in my mission to Have A Weekend Off.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.
