Seattle

I'm just back from a week in Seattle. Meg is still out there, at a knitting retreat. We went to visit Meg's step brother and his family, but also to check out neighborhoods, since we have talked for some time about moving to Seattle. I'm from Wisconsin and Michigan. I came to Huntsville for a job. We've been here for 22 years. We've raised our kids here. Meg opened Yarn Expressions here. I got started in music again after a long layoff, and it has changed my life. Low cost of living allowed us to have twice as much house as we could have afforded elsewhere. Huntsville has been good to us.

But we've never really fit in. Politically, socially, religiously, we're outsiders. We have friends here but not close friends.

There are reasons to stay. We're four hours from son CJ and grandson Joe in Memphis. I play in a couple of musical groups that I'd hate to leave. Taxes and cost of living are low.

So, we're debating this. Seattle seems to suit us, in many ways. But I'm 68. Do I want to take on a mortgage and make a cross-country move at this point in my life? Stay tuned!

I'll put my notes from the trip in the comments. It's mostly just to document the trip someplace where I can find my notes again. Don't feel obligated to read all that stuff.

We just got back from a great vacation in Seattle. Meg's step-brother TQ and his wife Leslie hosted a housewarming after finishing extensive remodeling. Family from all over the country showed up and we had a great time. TQ grilled the best salmon and chicken ever. Our son CJ baked amazing pies. Grandson Joe came with us, his first airplane flight, and he had a great time with his more-or-less cousins Xelli and Decca.

Our immediate family is small and distant. After Meg's mother died last spring, a strong sense of extended family emerged between us and the Bergs, the family of her second husband Bob. We promised to get together again, and this was that get-together. We're already talking about next year.

We flew out of Memphis with CJ and Joe on Thursday. Daughter Elizabeth made her own arrangements and met us in Seattle. On Friday night we watched the Packers game. There were about 20 of us, from five different states (none of which is Wisconsin) but we're all Packers fans. On Saturday we went to Pike Place market (they wouldn't let us throw the fish around). We went looking for Bass Northwest, one of the largest and best bass shops in the country, but we didn't stop there because downtown parking is so expensive. (That's music bass, not fish bass). Other people did other sightseeing things, and then we all met for the party Saturday afternoon.

We spent the afternoon hanging out on TQ's deck and back yard, drinking beer and eating fruit and guacamole. Sunny, 70's, no mosquitoes, what a place. Saturday evening we ate the amazing salmon and chicken and pie.

On Sunday some people went sight-seeing. We just hung out at TQ and Leslie's and let the kids play. Sunday night we all went out to dinner at Anthony's, a nice seafood restaurant on the water, walking distance from TQ and Leslie's.
