Female singer recs
Sunday, 16 January 2022 15:41Inspired by Shenshen Saturday, I bring some female Chinese singers whom I enjoy watching, and hope that someone else will discover and come to like them too.
For this post, I've deliberately chosen younger singers (all born after 1995) who are known, specifically, for their performances. Which is to say, they may not have much of an oeuvre of work and/or don't have many breakout famous songs of their own, and most of their claim to competence/fame as singers is by way of their covers of other songs. This isn't due to any faults on their part; it's just... an unfortunate consequence of how the C-ent industry works in recent years. That said, I have pretty good hopes for where they'll be in a few years, and these performances are plenty enjoyable on their own. :D
Enough rambling. Here they are, listed in descending age order. And flashing lights warning: most of these links feature flashing stage lights and/or lighting effects. Proceed with care if you are photosensitive.
Chen Zhuoxuan 陈卓璇
Chen Zhuoxuan will be familiar to some as the actress of A-Qing on The Untamed. She participated in the girlgroup survival show Produce Camp 2020 and debuted as a member of an idol group. Since then, she's released a few OSTs and performed on singing shows like The Treasured Voice and Stage Boom. Chen Zhuoxuan is most famous for her sharp wit and (occasionally cutting) tongue, but she's also very capable on stage and her open ambition is thoroughly refreshing. She was already one of the standout vocalists on Produce Camp 2020 and the rate of her growth in the last 1-2 years is, frankly, a little terrifying.
- 无羁 (The Untamed)
- 不存在的存在 (The Non-existent Existence)
- 连名带姓 (Full Name) (duet with Jeff Chang)
- 我敢 (I Dare) the audio quality of the fancam version isn't as good but she sounds better here without autotune flattening all the imperfections in her voice tbh
Lexie Liu 刘柏辛
What I said in my earlier paragraph about picking singers who don't have much work of their own: I lied. Unlike the other singers in this post, Lexie didn't come to fame via a singing competition - starting off as a singer-songwriter, she has also become more involved in the production of her music in the last year or so. Lexie most immediately stands out for the effortless blending of English and Chinese lyrics in her songs, and also has the most distinct personal music style. She's got a clear vision of the artiste she wants to be, and you'll immediately hear that individualistic element in any one of her songs - I daresay they're nothing like songs from any other young female singer in China you might know. And for fans of League of Legends, you might recognise her as the voice of Seraphine on the K/DA song More.
- Manta
- Penrose Metropolis
- ALGTR
*also: i'm personally intrigued by how her chinese lyrics are translated into english and vice versa in her official mv lyrics. someone please talk to me about them. ;;
Huang Xiaoyun 黄霄雲
Huang Xiaoyun went viral for her performance 左手指月 on the music show Sound of My Dream (1st link below) and she has since had so many other incredible performances that narrowing my list of favourites down to four videos was a struggle, lol. If you like these, I recommend searching her Chinese name on youtube and just watching anything and everything that comes up.
- 左手指月 (Left Hand Pointing to the Moon)
- 连名带姓 (Full Name)
- 我们的爱 (Our Love)
- 你的答案 (Your Answer)
Shan Yichun 单依纯
The winner of Sing! China 2020, Shan Yichun is the youngest and least experienced of the singers in this post, and... it shows, haha. She's still incredible in ballads of a particular style though, and her talents are extremely remarkable for her age. I hope to see her grow in versatility if she stays in this industry.
- 永不失联的爱 (Unbreakable Love) idk why the youtube video of this song got taken down a few months ago :(
- 像风一样 (Like The Wind)
- 别问很可怕 (Don't Ask, It's Scary)
- 你就不要想起我 (You Better Not Think About Me)
- 下雨天 (Rainy Day)
