The Vagaries of Fortune
Fandom: The Hunger Games Trilogy
Characters: Primrose Everdeen
Word Count: 100 words
Summary: The day after.

Prim cries herself to sleep that first night, only to wake with the dawn. In the gray light of morning, she steals from Mother's side, tucks the blankets back in around her, and slips outside.

She drifts through the Seam, from building to building, a ghost, until she reaches the fence. Standing in it's shadow, she stares out past the border and into the trees, into the dark stillness that is the forest. That stillness has always frightened her.

She wishes for her sister's bravery.

Prim never considers that it was terror that had forced Katniss to speech, not courage.

Ugh

I just wasted an entire hour of my life in a useless meeting here at work. The important information took approximately 60 seconds. The rest of the meeting was 2 people misunderstanding each other and arguing back and forth over 2 entirely separate points at the same time. *headdesk*

The temperatures are supposed to be ridiculous today. 101 degrees with a heat index making it feel like 105-110. Ugh. I think I'm going to hide indoors except for when I have to run for the bus to get home.

The Devil with his Finger on the Scale
Fandom: Fringe
Characters: September (the Observer)
Word Count: 104 words
Notes: End of season 3
Summary: Ruminations on morality.

He stands beneath the Statue; feels the newly made world settling around him and thinks.

Peter was always meant to cease to exist when he fulfilled his purpose, and fulfilled it had been, beyond what any of them had believed Peter capable of. Even now he can feel the totality of both worlds stabilizing beneath him.

It was to be the humans' reward that they could not remember what had been, December had assured him; that they could not remember Peter himself, whose fate had never been to survive in any universe.

September feels certain this is how things are meant to be.

Right?

So very, very tired.

Last week was the craziness of exams here at work. Lots of stressed out students, which leads to no-shows at the library for work and insane amounts of returned books.

I then spent the weekend like so:

Saturday
10am-3pm - Furniture shopping all up and down what we jokingly call Furniture Alley. It's a 3 or 4 mile stretch of about 2 dozen furniture stores.

Why? My MIL offered to buy us a new set of living room furniture. Considering ours is old and the cats have shredded the couch half to death, this is awesome.

3-9pm - Out at the barn riding and feeding all the critters, as the barn owner was out of town for the weekend. This includes the 3pm feeding for the Thoroughbreds, who need tons of food, and the 8pm feeding for everyone, plus some stall cleaning and I did manage a ride in there.

9:30-11:30pm - Online RPG gaming with friends. Lots of fun, though by that point I was a little too tired to concentrate, so it's good the GM was focusing on someone else's character for most of that.

Sunday

AM - Mother's day breakfast with my mom, dad and grandmother, plus the hubby and Roo. Lots of coffee involved here. :D

PM - More furniture shopping. We finally found a couch. This one, but in slate gray where it's red in the picture. We also decided on a black, microfiber storage ottoman from a different store, instead of the one in the picture, and we found neat Japanese paper lantern style lamps and gray/black accented tile end tables that are narrow and rectangular, to bracket the couch. It'll look awesome. It's going to take up to 12 weeks to get the couch, though, since it's a special order with the color change.

Today

I spent all morning with little help at the circulation desk, standing and pulling expired holds (books patrons requested but never picked up), and checking in what feels like 80,000 books that the graduating seniors have been returning.

My poor feet are killing me now. *grumbles*

In fandom news, though, I finally watched the finale of Fringe. Fringe!!! I love this show. I might also have 2 more drabble ideas now. :D Yay fic!! \o/

A Shadow Cast by That We Do Not See
Fandom: Fringe
Characters: Oliva Dunham
Word Count: 127 words
Notes: Through 3.20.
Summary: It takes her weeks to be able to sleep through the night again.

It takes her weeks to be able to sleep through the night again.

In the dark, the familiar shadows cast by her furniture turn sinister and she has to force herself to close her eyes. She buys blackout curtains and throws away all her nightlights in an attempt to drown the shadows, but her own breath sounds wrong in the darkness of her room and she still cannot sleep.

Days on the job feel unfamiliar, too. She finds herself reaching for the communicator no longer in her ear or for the phone to call a Charlie who never belonged to her.

It isn't until she crawls back into bed with Peter on the morning Walter walks naked through the house that she realizes the nightmares have stopped.

We took Roo to the NC Zoo on both Wed. and Thurs. I think we all must have walked 10 miles. My poor aching feet. I ended up buying shoe inserts this morning because I could barely stand on my left foot. My heel was killing me.

Roo had a fantastic time, though. We'd promised her back in Feb. that we'd take her for her birthday once the weather had gotten warmer. She was on spring break this week, so the timing seemed good. She spent a bunch of time taking pictures of the animals with the new digital camera she got for Christmas, just like Daddy, who was taking pictures on his camera.

She came home with 3 new stuffed animals and a wooden flute, all from her allowance she'd saved up.

I'm exhausted. :D

Then I went to the barn and rode this afternoon. The barn owner and I had fun playing with play foam swords on horseback. :D

I've had this little drabble sitting around in my WIP folder since last year. I finally polished it up so I could post it.

Heard No Sound
Fandom: Lost
Characters/Pairing: Kate/Jack
Word Count: 163
Summary: A peek inside Jack's head at the end of "The End".

He steps through the door ahead of Christian to joyful cries and shouts of laughter that shake the rafters. To sound. Everything locks into place with a click Jack thinks must be audible over the tumultuous noise in front of him.

He is greeted - hand clasped, hugged - and everything feels right, like it had that one time in his life when the only things that filled his awareness were the whine of the plane overhead (leaving), the faint hush of wind through the bamboo trees, and the feel of rough fur beneath his fingertips.

He comes back to himself when he looks at her, so vibrant and real.

"Kate." It comes out hoarse, as though he hasn't spoken in years. He supposes he hasn't - not really - and he blinks back the sudden moisture in his eyes.

A gentle smile curves her lips as she takes his hand in both of hers and leads him into the circle of sound.

I spent the day at the barn playing with the ponies. :) Went on a trail ride in the morning, then rode Dante in the afternoon.

I also managed, when getting ready for work tonight, to burn my ear with my straightening iron.

Owwwwww.

I got halfway out of my neighborhood this morning before I realized that one of my favorite pairs of jeans had a huge tear on the inner thigh. Because I had to turn around and go home to change, I ended up late to work. Grr. Also, I really liked those jeans and can't really afford to replace them right now. :(

Argh

Oh gods I hate stats week at work. The higher ups all want to know what kinds of questions people are asking at the library and who's doing the asking (ie. faculty, undergrads, general public, etc.). Which is a pain in the butt when the patron is cranky or upset and you have to stop to ask them what their status is.

*grumps*

I've had a wonderful weekend so far.

My sister got married yesterday. It was a wonderful day. She had a simple ceremony in my parent's back yard, with just a few family in attendance. The weather was wonderful, and a family friend made awesome food. Also, I got to take the day off work. :)

This morning I got to catch up with [personal profile] deirdre_c (who poked me to post more :D) for a little while, since she's here for a few days. We had coffee and chatted, which was awesome, if too short.

I went home after and picked up Roo and we went off to the barn to go horseback riding. She's taken up lessons this year, and does some simple work at the barn to earn extra riding hours. I rode myself when I was little and all the way through high school, but hadn't had a chance since. I've been bartering work at the barn for a chance to ride, and have managed to ride 3 or 4 times a week for the last several months. It's been awesome.

Tomorrow I'm wandering back out to the barn to play without Roo. (I like to have one day that's just for me). :)

We finally got our garage renovated into the bonus room. I'll try to find some pictures to post sometime this week.

New icon!

I'm ridiculously happy about my newest icon. My hubby took the picture for me. That's what I spent this past Sunday doing.
