Challenge 306:
HEARTBREAK
n. crushing grief, anguish, or distress

Sometimes, things don’t work out. The romance doesn’t last, or their plans for the future fall apart. The hero doesn’t get there in time, no matter how hard they try. Sometimes, all the magic or science in the world can’t stop something bad from happening.

Not all heartbreaks are permanent! Sometimes it’s still possible to fix things. But often, there’s no way out except to just live through it.

Write a story about heartbreak.

BONUS GOAL: “You don’t know what it’s like.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, July 13 at 9:00PM EST.

Challenge 305:
FIREWORKS
Bright, sparkling lights, pretty patterns, and incredibly loud noises; who doesn’t love a good round of fireworks to celebrate? (Well, besides the neighbors who still have to work in the morning, anyway…)

But fireworks can be more than just a pretty light show. They’re explosives, after all, which makes them dangerous; there’s a lot of ways to repurpose handheld explosives, accidentally or on purpose. In some settings, they’re magical, or a brand-new invention that most people aren’t familiar with yet; but sometimes they’re just that thing everybody gets for New Year’s or other holidays.

Do your characters like fireworks? What do they use them for?

Write a story about fireworks.

BONUS GOAL: “What do you think you’re doing?”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge 303:
DISTANT THUNDER
There’s a storm coming...maybe.

Was that lightning, or just a quick flash of someone’s flashlight out of the corner of your eye? Is the sun setting, or are those clouds rolling in and making everything go dark? There’s an ominous rumbling in the distance, just far enough away you can’t be sure what it is. Thunder? Trucks on the highway? Hoofbeats? Is it time to go inside and take shelter, or stay outside a little longer and look into it?

Write a story about thunder.

BONUS GOAL: “It wasn’t supposed to rain today.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!
