Media Roundup: Lots of Thoughts

It hasn’t been that long since the last media roundup and I haven't read that much but I had lots of thoughts that I wanted to share, so have a post:

Hirayasumi, vol 3+4 by Keigo Shinzō— This continues to be very charming. I’m loving all the little details. The cityscapes here feel so warm and lived in! I'm not sure if it's a slice of life manga thing, a manga thing or just an artifact of my limited selection but I've been really enjoying the land/cityscapes in the slice of life manga I've been reading recently
Content note: fatphobia/diet culture

Silver Spoon, vol 14-15 by Hiromu Arakawa— I’m working on a rec list of slice of life manga and I was reminded that I’ve never read the last two volumes of this series. I'd always meant to reread the rest of the series but that felt like too much of a project. So I ended up just reading these last two volumes – it wasn’t that hard to pick up, there’s helpful story summary in the front of each volume.

This is a charming story about a city kid who goes to an ag high school to get away from everything. I love all the details and about farming, food equipment and rural life. I thought it wrapped up nicely!

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures, Vol. 1 by C.R.C. Payne, StarBite, et al— I’ve been meaning to read this for a long time, and it was mentioned in the comments of my superhero comics rec list, so I finally got around to it. I ended up getting it on paper because the endless scroll webtoon format isn’t great for my hands.

It’s like a cute slice of life comic about the batfam. It’s got a very fic vibe, things are chill and everyone more or less gets along. Which sounds like exactly what I want in a batfam comic but for this first volume at least, felt a little flat actually. I wanted a bit more conflict or angst or something. I’m generally pretty happy with low conflict personal stakes stuff, but I guess these versions of the character feel a little shallow. Each story is so short, like five pages, its just hard to get much depth in that length.

(I’ll probably read some more of this because it is cute and free online. Maybe if I space out the episodes more it will not only not bother my hands as much but feel less bland.

X-men: The Animated Series season 1— Since I'm more open to Superhero media these days, R suggested we watch this animated series from the 90’s. It’s fun! I like that it's got a big team, though it does mean most characters don’t get much screentime. I also like that they are pretty much just fighting for mutant civil rights. There’s a lot less for me to suspend my moral disbelief about here than in most superhero stories I’ve encountered recently.

Creating a GIF or a collage

I wrote about the different effects of creating a GIF (moving image) or a collage (compilation of multiple images into one static image out of frames from the same scene, which I thought might interest other photo editors. While writing it, I came across the Fanlore entry on the picspam that likens picspams to fanart. It's a first for me to see picspams described that way!

On to the Quarterfinals!

1) Looks like this obsession with identifying people online is spreading to all sorts of places. I've been working with two survey companies for a long time for some extra cash. One of them recently prompted users to verify their accounts, offering better opportunities if they did. The other unexpectedly asked me to set up verification to access my account, which included uploading ID and revealing other information.

This is an account I've had for over 20 years. No matter what age I was when I opened it, I would clearly be of age since, and I have contacted customer service various times in the past due to problems. They know I'm a real person who has almost always accessed them from the same IP. I even had "diamond status", meaning I got extra points with each survey completed for faster rewards, as a result of being such a longtime member.

Apparently that was unimportant. I closed my account and they have not contacted me. Makes me wonder how many other people are doing so as well.

Media Roundup: Lots of Short Things

Jul. 3rd, 2026 11:05 am
forestofglory: E. H. Shepard drawing of Christopher Robin reading a book to Pooh (Default)
[personal profile] forestofglory
Another Media Roundup, less than a week after the last one? More likely than you think! As the title of this post says I have a bunch of short and quick reads to talk about.

The Faraway Forest: Wally’s Route by Debbie Fong—This is an early reader graphic novel about a raccoon mail carrier. It's very sweet and has fun colorful art. It's not very long so there's not much else to say about it.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest issues 1-12 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, et al. —I was trying to explain to R the other day that comics have their own brand of weirdness, but I couldn't articulate what set it apart just vibes. Anyways this has the comic weirdness vibes. There's parallel worlds, time travel, ancient Chinese villains (and heroes), rooms full doorways, ect. I generally like this kind of weirdness though, so this was fun to read.

It's set “some years ago” when Dick is still Robin. (I briefly tried to figure out how it fits into continuity, then I remembered that continuity does make any sense) I like the way Dick is written here. He's a little goofy and a little snarky – it feels right for him at that age. Kara/Supergirl is also here and a lot of fun!

Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki, and Joëlle Jones—I liked This Place Kills Me a lot and wanted to check out the author's other works. I read a few things she wrote a while back but she's written a lot more since then! This was pretty good. I guess teen girls are Tamaki’s thing because teen girls and their friendship was also central to this book.
Content Notes are Spoilers death of a teen as a major plot point

A True Wonder: The Comic Book Hero Who Changed Everything by Kirsten W. Larson and Katy Wu—This non-fiction comic about the history of Wonder Woman is the size and shape of a picture book and aimed at young readers. As such it's not very detailed or nuanced but it is quite charming. I do find the straightforward “progress” narrative a little bit frustrating though.

How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema—This book from 1978 was referenced in some of the non-fiction about comics I read, and I was curious. It turned out to be a quick read with lots of pictures written in a very breezy style. One of the things I’ve been unsure about in discussion about comics history is references to “superhero comic style” – I had only a vague idea what that meant. This book has given me a much clearer idea. Also wow the sexism built into that style leaps off the page here! Men are angular and muscular, while women are soft and curvy. Still helpful for my quest to better understand comics history.

Perspective! for Comic Book Artists: How to Achieve a Professional Look in your Artwork by David ChelseaI— More non-fiction about comics. How to books aren’t always the best for learning how to be a more nuanced reader unfortunately. This is very technical, and what I really wanted was some discussion out how perspective can be used in comics and how that’s different from other visual arts. Oh well, I shouldn’t really complain that this book was exactly what it said it would be.

Right, so some weeks back, I've been trying to understand CN mobile gacha otome game fan culture, and if you've been online for the past two weeks, you have probably heard of the Love and Deepspace fiasco. Well, the timing of me trying to figure out the fandom culture in CN gacha otome spaces couldn't have been more timely I guess! /jk

I'm not gonna go over the whole thing. I'm just here to explain the background, such as:

1. What are otome games?
2. How do mobile gacha otome games even work?
3. What is Love and Deepspace game about?

Throughout this, I’ll weave in some observations on the CN mobile gacha otome fandom culture/space.

I'm just gonna put everything in a cut so you can conveniently skip through everything if you are tired of this thing!

What are otome games )
How do mobile gacha otome games even work? )
What is Love and Deepspace about? )

Concluding remarks of sorts???

While I think all the bullying tactics and weaponizing the state is awful (though not the first time CN side has done something like that), it’s also kinda amazing (in the “watching a train wreck happen in slowmo) how Papergames managed to make all the bad decisions every step of the way… It has been a very eventful few weeks, and I really hope the fandom will calm down a bit soon because the sinophobia has been crazy (and the xenophobia on the CN side too).

Anyway, that’s it. I’m gonna make another post sometime this month specifically about Light and Night, and Lovebrush Chronicles because I love them a lot!

Also, feel free to ask me any questions, I guess? About otome games, gacha otome, any of the games mentioned here. I don't promise I can give a good, full answer, but I certainly can try to give you an answer. Also, feel free to correct me if you see something wrong here.

EDITED 2026/07/08: Not a full day since this post was up and here we are with more LaDS Situation things... TBH I kinda wish global players will understand that LaDS/Papergames is based in China, and their latest apology/announcement that they are pulling out of BiliBili World is a sign that yes, the government is breathing down their neck, so this has gone much bigger than bring back Valko/don't bring back Valko. Anyways, sending out hugs (if wanted) to anyone who enjoyed/still enjoying the game and is hurting from all of this.

Miyajima Urako (1890-1937)

[personal profile] nnozomi posting in [community profile] senzenwomen
Miyajima Urako was born in 1890 in Tokyo; her maiden name was Yagi. Her father had studied to be a pharmacist, spoke German and worked for Siemens, but was unreliable and spendthrift; after he died young, Urako’s mother, a society lady, devoted herself to poetry and music. Urako and her younger sister Sawako both attended the progressive Seijo Girls’ School, and Sawako went on to study and later teach at the Athenée Francaise and translate Daudet. Urako herself became a reporter for the left-leaning Yorozu Morning News. In 1914 she and Sawako also joined the Saffron feminist journal run by Otake Kokichi (after her break with the Bluestockings) and Kamichika Ichiko.

The Seijo headmaster hosted a philosophy study group at his home, which Urako attended after graduation; it was there, reading Bertrand Russell in the Everyman edition, that she met Miyajima Sukeo, when she was twenty-four and he four years older. Miyajima’s family was not well-to-do or interested in culture (apart from an artist brother); he was apprenticed in a sugar warehouse at the age of twelve, and went on to work at a kimono shop, as a trainee dentist, a money-lender’s collector, a coal mine clerk, a boiler stoker, and a traveling fishmonger. When he and Urako met he was running a used book stall. Urako, who had the more stable salary, paid for their dates, which Sukeo resented; when they married, she was already pregnant, which lost her her job. Instead she found employment as an amanuensis for a well-known translator of Goethe.

Sukeo was under police watch for his associations with the anarchist Osugi Sakae, whom he admired and looked up to; their proletarian Heimin News was frequently banned. Urako acted as an assistant editor, as she had for its predecessor Modern Thought, and stood on the street corner with a sandwich board to sell the paper when she was seven months pregnant. Osugi bought them all noodles once the paper sold out (they had cleverly avoided banning with articles by the well-respected Ozaki Yukio, husband of Yei, and others). Urako wrote for the paper as well, including a sharp critique of the Bluestockings’ debate on birth control and abortion, in which she pointed out that while Hiratsuka Raicho, Ito Noe (already among Osugi Sakae’s girlfriends), Harada Satsuki, and Yamada Waka all had varying opinions on the issue, none of them had really considered either the root causes or their solutions. Her other essays included the topics of pacifism from a mother’s perspective, the uses or otherwise of a girls’ school education, her own experience as a struggling but fulfilled housewife, and what to put in a cheap, nutritious box lunch that the children would actually enjoy eating.

In 1916 Sukeo published The Miner, sometimes called Japan’s first proletarian novel; it was in the same year that Kamichika Ichiko stabbed Osugi Sakae for his two(three)-timing ways. Sukeo and Urako took Ichiko’s side and broke off relations with Osugi. Their own household was, for all their leftist beliefs, run on conservative lines; Sukeo drank with his friends, Urako served them, washed the dishes and raised the children. In 1920, after visiting friends at a temple on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto, Sukeo took the whole household—including three children under four—there to live. As a writer he could work anywhere; Urako had to accustom herself to life on the mountain, and they lived on what local greens she could find to pick. She gave up and took the children back to Tokyo after a few months, while Sukeo went back and forth. He began to drink more and write less after the earthquake of 1923, when Osugi Sakae and Ito Noe were murdered along with many others, which led him to doubt his own practice as an anarchist.

In 1930, he told Urako he was leaving her (and their children) to become a Buddhist monk. Urako said “Well, if that’s what you feel you must do, you go do it.” Left with six children to support, she went back to work as a journalist. The essay she wrote later about Sukeo (scattered with the English and French terms of an educated left-winger of the time) suggests that she was under absolutely no illusions about his qualities, still loved him anyway, and was not prepared to tie her life to his any longer; it finishes “He left me with six children, three boys and three girls; anyone can imagine that holding them all together by myself is no easy thing. But he trusted me to be capable of it.”

She died of tuberculosis, possibly caused by overwork, at the age of forty-six in 1937, having changed her name back to Yagi Urako. Sukeo, never a very successful monk, survived her by fifteen years, coming in and out of his temple to drink or visit his family. (One episode remains in which Urako found a job for Sukeo’s old friend Kusano Shimpei (of frog poems fame), which he promptly lost by being entirely unreliable, leaving Urako to take the blame. Sukeo showed up to beat Kusano with a cane until he apologized.)

I think the apartment was some 8 degrees cooler inside once the blinds were up (since I added our solar curtains). Celebrated by breaking out a jigsaw puzzle and spending a relaxing afternoon doing that and catching up on World Cup games.

Sorry for my absence! But I've returned, with fandom drama if you're into that sort of thing. Maybe some of you have already heard about this and are sick of it, but I imagine there's members here who are too offline to have heard, or don't keep up with otome/gacha news.

Everyone's favorite otome gacha Love and Deepspace presented their new character a week-ish ago (June 22)! Check out the announcement tweet and all the lovely, encouraging replies ^_^

Fast-forward just a few days, and the team published this tweet, which smoothed everything over and made people more understanding of all the work that went into the new guy.

Haha, psyche. They killed him. Who knows how many months and how much overtime from so many different people went into creating this guy, but it's all down the shitter because they've announced they're not putting him in the game anymore. In fact, they said they won't be adding any new love interests period.

I have been on a reading journey that has taken me to the land of superhero comics. It started during a stressful time when I ended up reading a ton of fic about the Batfam (Batman and his various allies/sidekicks/semi-adopted semi-feral children), and accidentally got really into the fandom. (Reading a lot of stories that focused on found family but didn’t have romance was extremely soothing.) It was my original intent to just read fic and not bother with any of the source material. But I have slowly gotten sucked in.
