What Do You Do When You Can't Sleep?

2hrs of bad-dream-filled sleep is simply not enough to insure my ongoing ability to stand against the ravages of time & weather (a battle I've been failing to win since my tweens, I suspect)...

As anyone who knows anything about my "TV"-viewing habits probably knows, I have a weakness for foreign broadcasting, specifically the UK, Ireland & Australia... Since most of this stuff has just never been (and will likely never be) broadcast -- even on any of the various PBS/BBC'esque specialty cable channels that got me addicted to this stuff in my earliest years (it was Doctor Who on PBS & Coronation Street on CBC that hooked me -- are you happy? ;-D ) -- I've been forced (( FORCED, I TELL YOU!!! Don't you DARE judge me! ;-D )) to peruse the various "streaming" & torrent sites & sketchy, low-res You Tube uploads for such amazing shows as: Bottom, League Of Gentleman, Kath & Kim, The Tomorrow People, Little Britain [before anyone here had really heard of it], The Fast Show, Upwardly Mobile, The High Life, Benidorm, Monkey Dust, The Mighty Boosh, The Walshes, Black Books, Look Around You, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Brass Eye, etc.

My (not-so-secret) weakness is for comedy panel "quiz shows" like Would I Lie To You, Mock The Week, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out Of 10 Cats (and "...Does Countdown"), Big Fat Quiz Of The Year, Celebrity Juice (a sendup of that whole genre in & of itself), etc.

I just discovered another one this morning, as I was looking to see if there were any new episodes of my faves & came across "Safe Word". The host is Rick Edwards -- a bit of stubbly-bearded scrummy and the two "teams" are led by comedians David Morgan -- a comedian I've not seen much of, but he's got an un-repentantly "out" Gay wit that I enjoy & Katherine Ryan -- Canadian ex-pat, living & famous in the UK. They're joined by two different comedians every episode to flesh out their team's comedy potential & 1 celeb guest each. The celebs are the actual targets of each episode's contest & it's sort of like a celebrity roast, where the celeb on each team gets to choose a "safe word" and tap-out if they think the particular round's "game" goes too far.

The 1st episode hooked me when they tore into Joey Essex in some amazingly light-heartedly cruel ways and he didn't just take it, but laughed along in what (I hope) wasn't simply his usual daft, "unaware of his surroundings" (or the day of the week or who Jesus' mum was, etc.) kind of way. ;-D
