Happy New Year!
I've just bit the bullet and imported my LJ to Dreamwidth: New Year, new start and all that. So now I have two journals which can lie empty.:-) I'm kernel852 on DW if anyone wants to add me there. I will probably still mainly use LJ for reading/commenting as I don't know my way around DW. So this is sort of a test post. The cross-posting thing does seem very convenient and the importing was very easy. I am confused by the access/subscription thing though. *Sigh* It took me ages to feel at home in LJ.

I've never thought of myself as a violent person but the electronic fly swatter I bought this morning at Aldi has made me very happy.:-)

There might be some non-US peeps on my flist who haven't heard of Hamilton (it's possible??) but for those lucky people who don't have teens who are madly into musical theatre, you might like this little Star Trek Reboot /Broadway fusion. :-)

Gorgeous day here today! After keeping everyone happy over half term I decided I had earned a day off but sadly my kindle is broken again so I could lie in the sun but Nothing to read. Big Sad :-(( Baby girl sorted me out . She brought me one of her books and a magnifying glass so I could read it. :-)) Bloody hell, my little sweetie has good taste. |I loved the book. For a kid book it is very good. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00755MHXG/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 " Wonder " By R J Palucio

This is really bugging me. We had rhubarb fool for pudding tonight with gingernut biscuits which was lovely, but it reminded me that when I was a kid ( Glasgow,in the seventies) there were always two kinds of ginger biscuits on the shelf: gingernuts and the other ones. What were they? Was it gingersnaps? What was the difference? I vaguely remember liking the other sort the best but I don't remember why. The ones I liked were obviously the betamax of ginger biscuits and Gingernuts were the VHS. :-( Anyone have the least idea what I'm talking about?

About an hour ago the circuit breaker went and half the lights went out. Then when we reset it, the power came back but there was a really strong electrical burning smell. I have crawled around the house sniffing all the appliances and electrical outlets and can't locate the source, except that it is strongest in the upstairs and downstairs hallways, and not in any of the rooms. I am hoping it is just a light bulb, we have several chandelier type light fittings in the hallways, but I have never known a blown light bulb smell that strongly before. I am now too nervous to go to bed, so I will probably stay up half the night. You never know, I might even do some writing.;-)

This is currently my favourite compilation on YouTube. I find it very inspiring and energising and so do a great many other people judging by the comments. I just wanted to acknowledge it before it disappears, like his other ones.:-(
As it is, I can only listen on the pc as Apple have blocked it on my iPad.) I understand all the arguments about piracy and paying artists and composers for their music, but although I like these individual tracks, I * love* the way they are put together for six hours that keeps me going through a writing or PaintNet project. The playlist artist hasn't just randomly thrown a lot of tracks together, it is beautifully edited and thought out, and it's sad that his/her efforts are being stonewalled by organisations like SME. For what it's worth, I have bought several tracks after listening to this ( by Jeremy Soule and Two Steps From Hell) that I wouldn't have bought otherwise, but removing it from You Tube isn't going to make me buy any more, it will just make me sad.

Sad to hear that Gareth Thomas, who played Blake in Blake's Seven, has died aged 71. That show was my first love; just thinking about it brings back floods of memories of my teenage years.
I have all the VHS tapes in a box in the attic. I can still remember how excited I was when they were first released. I used to go to Woolworths every week to buy the latest one and then watch it several times over. It was my first obsession.
RIP Gareth.

[livejournal.com profile] selenic76 has suggested we share a bit of fandom love throughout February so I thought I'd talk about my first real fandom : The X- Files.
I had enjoyed other shows before then but this was the first one that got me involved online and was my introduction to fan fiction.

(There may be spoilers but nothing major.)

I was pretty lukewarm about Peter Capaldi last season. There were some good eps but it just didn't win me over. I've never liked Jenna Coleman so that didn't help, and I hated the first appearance of Missy, so Dr Who became that show I watched with the kids rather than anything I felt fannish about.
The opening two parter of the new series has been brilliant, though! Fantastic writing and dialogue. I have to say Missy is amazing in the latest ep. She has some fantastic lines and is so entertaining to watch, and so Scottish, which...YAY! The scenes between Davros and The Doctor were some of the best I have ever seen on Dr Who. I couldn't help feeling that I would have got more out of it if I could remember every episode that Davros and the daleks had ever been in, but that is always the challenge for the writers ; they have two audiences: the die-hard fans and the casual viewer, erm and the in- betweeners like me, and the script has to work for all of us. This one definitely worked for me!

I have just finished the last fic in the Loaded March Opus and I'm in that place where I need to shout from the rooftops that YEAH this is what fanfic is all about. I am not a proper Merlin fan for I didn't watch all the eps but I think the fanfic supercedes the show in so many ways. Forget all the tedious anachronisms of the BBC series; here we have modern British army and SAS fighting a very modern war against the forces of chaos and magic. The writing of the main characters is exceptional and ... it's long, really long - over one million words! The world building is awesome and there are times where the plot gets a bit overly convoluted but I am just in awe that the author manages to keep all those balls in the air and mostly tidies up everything at the end.

I came across this poem for the first time today and just wanted to share.

In an unposted letter of 1933, Robert Graves wrote that scientists “fail to understand that the cabbage-white’s seemingly erratic flight provides a metaphor for all original and constructive thought.”

There are actually at least two in the garden, this little chap and a bigger one. Not quite sure what to do. They are moving about and don't look sick but they shouldn't be out and about in daytime. I've put out some water for now.

Anyone watching the fissure eruption at Bardarbunga, Iceland?
It's spectacular.

There is a great live stream on youtube here:

Has anyone any idea why four of my user pics would just not be there any more?
They are still listed on the drop down user pic menu but when the selected one didn't show up I checked manage user pics and there are four blank boxes.
I hardly ever look at my profile so I don't know if it happened after the latest LJ changes or before. I am still on old style journal. It is still counting them as it says I have used nine but only five are showing.
