This year I'm doing Community Thursdays. Some of my activity will involve maintaining communities I run, and my favorites. Some will involve checking my list of subscriptions and posting in lower-traffic ones. Today I have interacted with the following communities...

* Comment on Just One Thing (8 July 2026) in [community profile] awesomeers.

* Commented on Check-In Post - July 8th 2026 in [community profile] get_knitted.

* Commented on "Speak Up Saturday" in [community profile] tv_talk.

Acceptable Apps

I, as much as many people, am tired of the amount of things that force itself into app-hood, but there are a couple things I've installed on my phone as apps that I'm glad I did, namely, the Wikipedia app and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary App.

So much of small searches are either just checking spelling, a thesaurus check, or fact-checking on Wikipedia. The Wikipedia app's been great because it saves tabs of all my searches if I want it to, and the Dictionary app is great because it gets right to what I need it for, word checking that I have too often done with a search engine and have decided they don't need my clicks.

Just nice utilities to have around.

"Ethels" Lunch

Woke up at 8 AM. Oliver scratched up my leg because he was on my lap and I tried to get him off, and he slipped. Sigh.

There was a flurry of activity when I started work because of a problem with some Web pages that I posted. I fixed them.

I went out to lunch with the AARP-affliated women’s group. It was nice, but I had to leave early to get back to work, so I felt a little like I had just got there. I told them that I’ll try to get to more of their lunches. My stomach is upset now though (I don’t think that it was the food, but my IBS), but I can’t leave work to lie down when I just got back from lunch.

Oh! I discovered that there is a Le Peep restaurant in Champaign. It’s a really good breakfast chain that I thought was only in the Chicago area. I’ll have to go there soon. It’ll be a little sad though because I used to go to Le Peep with my mom.

My stomach is still kind of wacky. I thought about going to piano class, but I think that I’ll lie down instead. I tried eating something to see if it helps. Couldn’t sleep; my brain was whirring about the things that I needed to do. Oliver was snuggling with me though.

I checked to see if the dryer was plugged in because it isn’t turning on. It seems to be, but it’s hard to tell because the dryer vent is in the way. I’ll have to get someone in to look at it, but I need to check the circuit breaker box first. Meanwhile, I have the heated drying rack.

Got the recycling out. Two full bins and some boxes. The forecasters are predicting rain late in the morning, but I’m hoping that the recycling people will get the boxes before then.

Fed us all. My stomach is still upset despite the food. I need to get to bed soon to settle my stomach, and I need to shower before work because of a dentist’s appointment.

So today I went to the Honda dealer to look at another CR-V and went next door to the Hyundai dealer. Since Hyundai has made remarkable strides in reliability over the years it's now nearly as reliable as Honda and Toyota. After comparing the CR-V to the Tucson, I'm probably going to go with my first ever Korean vehicle. I mean Honda's warranty is 3 years. Hyundai has both the general car AND the electronics under warranty for 6 years/60,000 Miles and tops it with 10 year/100K miles on the driveline.

And then they offered me 0% apr for FIVE years.

It's hard to say no to that.

Came home, searched for end of life planning things that are also humorous found them (and then went to drink pickle brine so I can speed things along)

After that I saw something on Facebook that sounded so good so I went off the site to track it down in the real world so to speak. I found it. It's not some b.s. made up for FB. abruzzo sister tours and they do ancestral tourism. I will check into them more. This would be like archaeotours in Wales where I have a private tour. I am willing to pay for that. Hoping this is an option that doesn't have 1001 complaints lodged around them.

What I'm Reading Wednesday

What I Just Finished Reading:

One of the Girls - this was good

Our Wicked Gifts - not bad, horrorish

What I am Currently Reading:

Purra-normal Activity - a cozy mystery, so far so good

The Silent Companions - for summerween

The Harvesting - Zombie apocalypse fare

What I Plan to Read Next: some of my looming arcs (carry me to the grave or the seance garden) and things for popsugar

I had the tubes of this stone for some time and came across the balls during a trip to Minnesota in 2024. Combined them with some gold and multi color E beads to echo the colors in the stone. It's so lovely to look at, I wanted it to stand as alone as possible in the necklace.

“IMPOSSIBLE!” No Work Food Gardens Based on Wild Edible Ecosystems

About 20 years ago, after I first started studying Permaculture, I went to work for a very sustainable Permaculture-oriented CSA farm. One day, after working all morning painfully tending, pruning, and weeding a patch of cane berries, I went for a bike ride along my favorite trail. Black raspberries were in season, so I went home, grabbed 3 3 gallon buckets and filled them up with raspberries.

That was when it hit me. NOBODY was working tending these, except for perhaps the deer and birds fertilizing them. Meanwhile, my own hands were covered with scratches from my morning work
.

This is an example of humanity's earliest agriculture: encouraging plants we find useful in places where we go, and occasionally ripping out ones we don't want there. Wild plants can mostly take care of themselves. You don't have to fuss over them like delicate domestic fruits and vegetables.

My approach to laissez-faire permaculture is similar. I plant new things that seem promising. I try to help them establish. They live or die. The ones that live, I expect to take care of themselves. Some of what I grow is really good at that. \o/

The Hockey Player

I just watched the Luke Prokop documentary. A high point in which is getting signed by his hometown franchise, Edmonton Oilers, and playing for their AHL team. They signed him knowing he's gay. He's finally getting proper development and feels like he's being taken seriously as a prospect. He's played with the Oilers in preseason games, which means playing with some of the biggest names in hockey.

The coda to all this, which happened after the doc wrapped I assume, is that the Oilers also didn't re-sign him. He's UFA, and currently unsigned. So, the Oilers acquired him and treated him seriously as a prospect for their NHL team, then switched to their new coach Mike Babcock, and then he was not re-signed. Now, we don't know how this played out. Luke might have seen the hiring of Babcock and decided to GTFO, or maybe he feels he has a better chance to move up in a different franchise. But his story is very much an unfinished one and it's a bit strange for this doc to drop while he's on the market and has been for a bit.

Again, we don't know what is up. He might have multiple offers and is deciding. I obviously think he'd be a great fit for Coachella Valley, and hey we just hired staff specifically to develop defencemen! But the doc tries to end on a happy note, when in reality things are deeply unresolved.

I check Luke's Elite Prospects page daily, but if he finally gets a contract somewhere I'll probably hear about it elsewhere first.

Creating a GIF or a collage

I wrote about the different effects of creating a GIF (moving image) or a collage (compilation of multiple images into one static image out of frames from the same scene, which I thought might interest other photo editors. While writing it, I came across the Fanlore entry on the picspam that likens picspams to fanart. It's a first for me to see picspams described that way!

Monday's disruption was even more disruptive than I'd expected, lasting most of the afternoon and frequently being hella loud, as the aging former kids used to say. The cutting of the bushes was more extensive than I'd expected, and by evening I found my back yard pretty much denuded, except for a couple of pokeweed plants that just got mashed down instead of cut. for everything else, including the grape vine, it was a massacree. If the mere stumps of two plants survive and re-bush, it won't be because the trimmers intended it, I'm sure, and a third bush is, as far as I can tell, utterly gone.

The worst part of this is that there is now no shade at all on most of my back yard for most of the afternoon. I fancy I can sense the added heat, but can't be positive because the high temperatures have risen at the same time the shade has been eradicated. It might be the one or the other. Of course with all the new space that has been opened up I could probably plant a decent sized garden, but where would I get the energy to take on such a task?

Anyway, Monday's turmoil left me with no energy to deal with Tuesday, so I vegged out. I did check the Safeway ad early Wednesday, and found a few items that will be nice to get on shopping Friday. There is even a sale on unscented Epsom salts, which I badly need for foot soaking. Their web site says they have my donuts in stock, but we shall see.

Also, while searching for Mullein leaf tea, which I can no longer get from Safeway, I found a site called iHerb, and not only do they have bulk Mullein leaf tea much cheaper than the tea bags I used to get from Safeway, but they also have a buckwheat pancake mix, which some Safeways carry, but not those in this town, and I've been wanting some of that for a long time.

They also have what Idernet reviews say is a decent brand of liquid Castile soap for less than half the price I usually pay for it at Safeway. There is other stuff too, like Medjool dates for about three bucks less than they are at Safeway, and they have some packets of miso soup mix I'd like to try, and a few other things, and if I get all that stuff I will spend enough to get free shipping, so I'll be putting together an order this evening. The landlord taketh away, and the Idernet giveth. Blessed be the name of the Idernet.

I just got a notice this morning that they're doing another damn bldg inspection day after tomorrow and I have other things to do that day including having to leave at 4 because I'm getting a ride to a concert. The window is between noon and 5 and I hate the idea of people I don't know in my home when I'm not there. The damn manager doesn't seem to understand this.

Save The Optical Drive

Jul. 8th, 2026 12:20 pm
armaina: time for a change (Default)
[personal profile] armaina
Honestly, I feel a Kind Of Way (negative) about platforms that pride themselves on giving power back to the owners and they still can't be bothered to offer anything with an optical drive.

Services Like Frame Work and System 76 talk a big game about being able to build out your system however you like, which is mostly true, unless you want an optical drive. Worse still, their desktop cases don't even accommodate space to install it on your own. Especially for a desktop, what's even the point of getting it through them when places like microcenter and newegg (Or your local PC repair shop!!!! Support your local shops!!!!!!!!!!! ) will build the thing for you so what's their benefit really if they can't even give you space for an optical drive.

And yes, the ability to have built-in access to or means to install an optical drive I think is pretty dang important. An External Drive is something you use in a pinch, not a permanent solution. And I hate hearing 'you don't need one' excuses when I bring up this problem. Yes! I need one! I wouldn't be looking for it if I didn't! I wouldn't have gone out of my way to purchase a case with room for a drive bay if I didn't use it. I very frequently re-watch my DVDs as well as archive my music.

I'm reminded of this issue every time I watch Venture Brothers with Z. See, we don't really have space for a couch so the only way for us to watch something together and cuddle, is on the bed. But to watch it on the bed, we have to use the laptop, but to watch my DVD collection on the laptop, we need to use an external optical drive.

Out of curiosity I went looking around for laptops with optical drives. Turns out! Most stopped making laptops with optical drives back in 2019!! I had been hoping services like Frame Work and System 76 might rekindle that but it doesn't look like they even intend to go in that direction :/

And I'm sure this isn't intentional just opportunistic coincidental, that access to optical drives have scaled back as access to digital streaming services scaled up. It's really important that we keep access to physical media, but it's becoming an uphill battle to play it.
