"It can be intimidating to a new reader. With ‘Spider-Man TODAY,’ we wanted to make sure that a new reader could pick this up, start here, and not feel left out. So we hold your hand through it. In fact, you see parts of Spider-Man’s origin in each issue as we go through there, and then other characters' origins as we get beyond just this first arc. We wanted to make sure that this entry-level comic was a welcome mat saying, ‘Come on in, the water's fine.'" -- Nick Lowe

X-MEN: ELSEWHEN #1's best panel

The first of three graphic novels dropped this week, featuring John Byrne writing and drawing an "alternate history of the X-Men" in which Jean Grey doesn't die because the Shi'ar take an alternate approach to the Phoenix problem. A not very smart one, as it turns out, but never mind that for now. )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Well, the USA's 250th Anniversary happened... I guess. The least unifying speech imaginable from Trump didn't start until 11pm and, as such, the fireworks display didn't start until the 5th of July. Though the scale of it meant that they're still cleaning the detritus out of the Reflecting Swamp and most of the rest of the city centre (I mean detritus from the fireworks, not the speech, just to be clear).

There were also the 200 or so fully masked, white supremacists walking through the city with Confederate flags, for that real "We are one people" vibe.

Trump also managed to drag the World Cup into another mire, by personally intervening in the case of an American player being given a red card, which means an automatic send off an one game suspension, which was then reversed by FIFA (an unheard of event). The global reaction was, shall we say, not supportive of this move, even if America then did go on to lose the match and be out of the competition.

In good news on the UK front, Nigel Farage is under multiple investigations for accusations of not being open about his finances, which seem dubious to say the least.

My Adventures with Superman gave us another new Super, who looks like Kon-El, sounds like Kon-El and acts like Kon-El, but is actually Jon-El... well, a Jon Kent from the future.

Given "Kara adapts to modern day Earth" is already a story arc, this seems an odd choice. We do get confirmation of the big bad though, Hank Henshaw's Cyborg Superman... a character I wish I had ever actually found interesting, but maybe this show will do something fascinating with it (at least it's not Doomsday, I guess)

A new EP of re-recorded Jem tracks dropped, with Britta Phillips recreating the singing voice of Jem again for four of the classics

And to end on a suitable bit of cheerful absurdity, Hasbro are releasing a Scooby Doo/Transformers Collaboration. The Mystery Machine becomes Mysterious Prime, with four interchangeable heads (Though sadly, probably not Headmasters) and Automutt a robotic Great Dane that turns into a box of Scooby Snacks.

The series is a solicited four issues, a focus on the subtitular support squadron.

Issue #1's a solo story for the squadron's leader of the same alias, of course bringing up his secretly being related to one of the Science Ninja Team.

Issue #2's Red Impulse and one of his two wingmen from the series.

Red Impulse and the other one is this month's issue #3. )

Ahem.. Excuse me, I have no idea where THAT came from...

I did wonder if I should make a 4th of July post and wasn't sure what to post, but then, the gods of media smiled upon me.

Now I get to make what it simultaneously, a 4th of July post, an "enjoy the heatwave" post AND a "THIS got through Marvel's approval process?" post

Also the embodiment of our motto "It's only subtext if it's subtle"

Captain America - Sentinel of the Beach - and then some! )

Wiccan & Hulkling in: 'Raid of Ultron'!

This year, rather than an anthology depicting queer characters around the Marvel Universe (or even a miniseries as DC offered), the story is centred around just nine main characters, some of whom don't feature on the cover, and some of whom have their action scenes off panel. Makes the world seem a little small, in my opinion.

It does feature a Wiccan and Hulkling family tree though, and many sexy robots!

Issue #2'd ended on private detective Ralph Dibny delivering some to his client Iris Allen and her husband Barry.

The Martian artifact James Jesse'd stolen from Allen Industries' custody was in Vandal Savage's hands now - Savage had a plan, underneath his friendship with Barry and Iris.

He'd tried to achieve that intention by cloning Wally West, who'd been struck with a strange power on Barry's expedition to Mars - the result was a rampaging Wally clone wracked with the original's power and memories.

The clone was on a super-speed rampage - Barry, Iris, and Ralph stood in his wake.

Ralph recapped. )

SideQuested by K. B. Spangler and AlePresser (of A Girl and Her Fed fame) hasn't been mentioned here before (as far as I know). Chapter 4 will start serialisation on Friday, July 3. For those who like physical comics, the first print volume (collecting the prologue through chapter 2) was published earlier this year.

Charlie never expected any of this.

Issue #1'd been setup that raised questions.

Barry Allen'd been paralyzed by a sniper's bullet while saving John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza in 1963 - who fired a bullet fast enough to hit the Flash?

Wally West, part of Barry's exploration of Martian ruins years later in 1999, had found a piece of that civilization's history and been struck by lightning - what power did he twitch with now?

Wally's colleague James Jesse had stolen the Martian artifact, murdered to get away with it - why did he do that?

The answering of these questions began with private detective Ralph Dibny.

He was woken at night. )

In the US, the build up to the 250th 4th of July has perhaps not been the most well handled thing I've ever seen, with the "renovated" Reflecting Pool earning the nickname "The Strait of Warm Ooze" and the Great State Fair looking like a poorly attended village fete in some small rural village rather than the vibrant hub of an economic superpower

In the World Cup, the Scottish team did not make it to the next round and I am already having to field off questions asking "Well, who will you be supporting now?". Such questions underestimate my apathy. If I didn't care enough about it to support my home team, what on earth made them think I have a backup?

My Adventures with Superman season 3 is proving to be as entertaining as one would hope, though no "big bad" yet, which seems a little surprising, or maybe I'm missing the clues.

And X-Men 97 season 2 started tomorrow, so that's something to look forward to.
