it's a magical world...
Welcome, I'm Orbble, (he/him) in my 30s. I'm a trans man, husband, and cat dad located in the USA. My corner of dreamwidth is a place for my fannish interests and writing, journaling about my life, worldbuilding and OC development... and positivity! I'm a firm believer in activism, compassion, and hope going hand-in-hand...in-hand. As corny as it can sound, I love finding the wonder in small, every-day moments.

A rare public post, 'cause your boy is looking for information! Specifically, as the title suggests, I'd love to know what resources y'all who make icons and other graphics find useful for learning. I've started to really enjoy making icons for different communities and events, and I'd love to make other graphics as well, but I definitely recognize that my skillset is really limited so far. So I'd love any resources y'all use/know of for learning different skills, be it tutorials sites, videos, whatever! Maybe I'm getting old and Bad At Googling, but I've been having a hard time finding things that aren't out of date and mostly contain broken reference images... But I'm going to keep looking on my own too! I just wanted to see if anyone knows some good resources off the top of their heads! Resources like textures, filters, etc, are also welcome!

As for what I'm working with, I usually use an - ahem - totally legit version of photoshop cc 2017, and also have used gimp before. Not looking to buy any new programs but I am open to sailing the high seas if it's things like adobe products...

Also feel free to point folks you know this way if they've got resources they'd be down to share!

The Art of Murder feels like an especially fitting thing to recommend for Fannish 50, as - despite its ominous title - it's all centered on the experience of being a fan and creating fanworks. It's an indie animation pilot (there are some truly amazing indie animation projects on YouTube, it's a rabbit hole I highly, highly suggest hopping down), and the premise is so charming: When young artist Pip goes to sleep, the characters she draws fanart of in her sketchbook always come to life for the night.

These characters really set the tone of The Art of Murder: not only are they all aware they're fanart of fictional characters, with all of them taking pride in the popularity of their source material, but they're all pastiches of existing character archetypes. There's Winn, a young girl who primarily draws from Adventure Time's Finn, but also generally represents that high-energy kid hero type in a lot of similarly quirky cartoons. Albie draws from the library of traditionally-animated Disney Princesses, and is insecure about the rise of 3D animation, (and one of my favorite jokes in the pilot is when her character is used to poke at the way princess media like Disney's make money selling dozens of differently dressed merchandise for the characters). Sousuke the anime ninja draws from, well, Sasuke from Naruto - and speaks entirely in (captioned) Japanese, a fantastic touch - and finally, Giorgio is a detective from an dating sim game, and his hamminess delightfully plays up the tone of many of those games.

The story starts on a night where someone new has been drawn: Not a character from an existing IP, but Pip's own original character. The other characters welcome the aptly-named OC to "The World of Pip's Sketchbook" in a super-catchy musical number As dawn comes, the characters return to the sketchbook... And then the next night, a page of the sketchbook has been torn out - one of the characters has been, effectively, killed.

The pilot mostly sets up the characters and story, but I do believe there's more in progress. While I don't think the mystery is exactly hard to take a guess at solving, I kind of love that, because the direction I see things going just further highlights how this is a show about the experience of being a fan, but also just being a creator! And who knows, maybe I'm entirely wrong!

If you check out The Art of Murder, let me know what you think - it's really got some great self-aware, tongue-in-cheek humor. It feels like a love letter to loving things, and I think that's so fun!

For years, the shiny Gyarados in Johto's Lake of Rage, and later in Unova other guaranteed shinies, were the only shiny Pokemon I'd ever seen in any of the games! For those who might not know, shiny Pokemon are rare, alternately-colored versions of Pokemon. For each specific species of 'Mon, there's one normal color scheme and one shiny one. While there are certain ways to seek out shinies and increase your chances of finding one, the base odds were 1 in 8192 from the second generation (where shinies were introduced) all the way through the fifth. Then in Gen Six, these odds were changed to 1 in 4096. That's considerably more likely, but still a rare thing!

However, the increase in likelihood was enough for my luck to change! Going around the Kalos region after having completed the main story, I ran into a shiny Abra. I was excited because, hey, my first random shiny encounter! But I was also... not so excited, for two reasons.

See, here's a not-shiny Abra on the left, and a shiny one on the right:

ImageImage

...They don't look all that different, huh? Yeah. For me, as for many, it's way more exciting for a shiny to look very different from the normal version of the Pokemon's colors... After all, that's the only difference. Shiny Pokemon aren't any stronger, they don't learn special moves, nothing like that. They just look neat!

But hey! A shiny's a shiny, and this was my first time encountering one at random! I wasn't about to pass that up, I had to catch it! Which leads to the second reason I was less than thrilled: Abra is rather infamously a pain to catch, as it will use the move Teleport to end the battle and escape on its first turn, without fail. There are ways to get around this if you're prepared, to be fair! But I wasn't!

Luckily, in turn-based Pokemon, you can use an item before your opponent makes their first move. So I threw a Pokeball, hoped for the best... And caught the shiny Abra! It turned a disappointing first shiny less disappointing, having caught it in a precarious situation. I don't have it anymore, though... While my second mon-guaranteed shiny, from that same save file of Pokemon X, is still in my Pokemon Home account, I believe I traded Abra for another shiny on a gaming forum. I can't remember which Pokemon the other shiny was, though.

I do kind of wish I still had it, but ultimately, my favorite part of that shiny is the story of finding and catching it. And ever since then, I've found wild shinies in many playthroughs, and done plenty of intentional shiny hunts to try and get specific Pokemon shiny! So that Abra did open the door to more!

...Though, Kalos might have a bit of a mischievous streak for me, when it comes to shiny Pokemon. In the second game to take place there, Legends: Z-A, I saw and failed to catch a shiny Pidgey, my first time failing a shiny! XD

orbble: (helluva boss | blitzo)

Last year, I got really into Hazbin Hotel, much to my surprise. After I finished watching the second season, I eventually checked out Helluva Boss... And oh boy, I shouldn't have been surprised a second time, but I sure was! Helluva Boss took longer to hit for me, I didn't really get into it until this month. And I do think Hazbin Hotel is probably the better show, all things considered - certainly better musically - but as someone who enjoys character over plot, I might actually like Helluva Boss more. It's a bit more slice of life and character-focused over the plot, even once the plot hits.

And a huge part of what made Helluva Boss such a win to me is the main character, Blitzo. (and that "o" is silent!) So for this Fannish 50 entry, I'm just gonna talk about why this dumb imp is such a hit with me.

Starting off my Fannish 50 with a niche media recommendation! Let me tell you about a visual novel called Pine Point; Insomniac... I'll start with the game's official premise blurb:

You’re Nil.

Fishing at Lost Lake, trashing the popular kids’ cars, and playing in your shitty garage band are all things you’d rather be doing than working a dead-end job that will probably keep you trapped in Pine Point for the rest of your life.

Fortunately, you get to work alongside your best friend, Dimitri. Unfortunately, Dimitri is leaving town at the end of the summer… and you’re not.

I've signed up to participate in Fannish 50 at [community profile] goals_on_dw in 2026! I'm looking forward to it! I don't have a clear plan or specific theme in mind, but I'll most likely post for it once a week in the coming year, and some of the things I'd like to post include recommending small-fandom canons, revisiting canons and writing on that experience, sharing some of my fannish collection items and/or "holy grail" items, and mini ship or character manifestos! (I don't know how much people still do those, stuf like lj's old [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto comm, but I love the concept!) That said, who knows what I might come up with! My Fannish 50 posts will also be public, to spread the fandom fun!

Rascal's Door

Light is off!

What's in the Bowl? fic of roughly drabble length (probably at least a little over) or aesthetic pinterest boards with at least 10 pins (my existing examples)

Creating For:
- Pokemon (general or games)
- Dungeon Meshi (anime)
- The Owl House, DuckTales 2017, Tangled the Series
- Dimension 20: Fantasy High, Dimension 20: Cloudward Ho
- Most* animated Disney or Pixar films
*I won't write for Pocahontas, and I haven't seen Strange World, The Good Dinosaur, or Lightyear yet so I can't write for those either

Let Me Know: Let me know whether you want a pinterest board or fanfic! For fanfic, request a canon, character, or ship (romantic or not) and a prompt. Prompt can be as kept general or feel free to get more specific! For a board, simply request a character! Providing a back-up request is highly appreciated, but not necessary.

Other info: Not writing smut or themes of grief/character death or creating anything for adult/minor relationships. I will do my absolute best not to include any AI images in pinterest boards, and when I'm unsure I'll err on the side of not adding something, but if something slips past my notice on something I put together for you I apologize. Please let me know!

I waffled a lot on making this post, as my post about Jinks got very little traction, and she's arguably the character at the center of my main storyline in Lurra. (Well. Storyline might be a strong word? I go back and forth between "I don't want to do a whole plotted story for this" and "there's a clear start for a plot here, and it's exactly the kind of story I love" - I'll get into that in the content under the cut.) But, ultimately, that's kind of the nature of OCs. You can't expect people to be instantly interested, that's really rare! And even if sharing more information doesn't generate interest, that's okay! I love these guys and having information about them on-hand is helpful for any kind of writing I do with them in the future.

So, without further ado...

...let's meet the rest of the crew! )

So, you can probably see where there's a window for the "taking down the corruption" themes that my Persona 5-loving heart adores, but... We'll see! Anyway, if anyone reads about these fellas, thank you so much and I hope you like 'em!

OC info time! I was going to make one post for all four of 'em, but I started with one here and realized... I have too much to say for that! Plus, a fifth character has joined the ranks, so-- one at a time, I think, is best. It'll maybe be helpful to have read my setting info before jumping into this, but what you really need to know is its an urban fantasy in a modern setting, where magic is common. I tried to include enough information about anything else in the post itself!

Anyway... Because it just feels right, I'm starting off by introducing y'all to the OC from this group who's been around the longest, and I'll be honest, my favorite. Leto Jinks is my pride and joy, and I hope folks enjoy reading about her beneath the cut!

Here's some of the worldbuilding I've been working on with [personal profile] themagpieapologues, specifically the lore of the world's origins, and a look at what it's like there now. If people are interested in this - which, hey, no harm no foul if not; that's the way it can be with OCs! - I'll make a post about my actual characters for this setting. I just didn't want to get into that yet since there's art for those guys, and this post is already... really long... Oops
