Lifted Fandom Meme
Jul. 7th, 2023 12:31 pmLol I did a very, very low-effort edit of a fandom meme that
tempural shared and wanted to answer it for myself (even though I'm not on Masto). I really love these sort of question memes. Soooo grandpa rambling under the cut!
1. How long have you been in fandom?
I think it depends on the definition of "fandom" cause I think some people view this as "how long have you liked a thing" vs "how long have you been speaking to other fans and/or creating & sharing things for a series/group/etc." I view it more as the latter, so I think about 2004 or 2005 was when I really got invested in a fandom, though it was just me and a circle of friends irl obsessed with the same TV shows and bands. We would literally print out these super pixelized images at the library and pass them to each other in class and on the playground to tape on our binders (and hide in our sock drawers lol). Online, I'd say since like 2008 really. I mostly lurked when I was younger, so I don't think I really started posting until then. I was mostly on fanforums (and subforums on totally unrelated websites haha) and Deviantart and EARLY Youtube.
2. Which fandoms are you in now?
Primarily Yu-Gi-Oh! (broadly speaking) but there are few different things I tend to juggle at the same time. I usually come back to Venture Bros., Pokemon, the Alien prequels, HunterxHunter, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Devilman, and JJBA: Diamond is Unbreakable. I dunno, I like a lot of things, but these are the ones I notice I come back to the most (and I wouldn't consider the things that I like and basically watch in isolation to really be fandom--like Property Brothers is basically a fandom of me and my partner lol).
3. Do you create transformative works (fic, fan art, podfic, etc.)?
Yeah! I mostly write fic (currently under
whimwitch) and used to write a lot of fanmeta on my now defunct tumblr. I sometimes make fan art, but drawing takes a lot more time for me I think. I've also done a few fan recipes that I should publish online sometime (only ever published em in a zine). I also used to make a LOT of fanmixes, and still do, but have found it challenging to figure out where/how to share em these days.
4. What was your first fandom?
Oh boy...that would have to either be YGO Duel Monsters or Fall Out Boy (-"-;). As for YGO...oh man, this really started as me and a friend at school that were like OBSESSED with Kaiba and Pegasus. I remember printing out tons of fanart that we would stumble across online and cutting it out to make these lil shrines in our desks. And then at some point I discovered online fanfiction and would primarily read those silly gameshow sorts of fics that would be written like a play script, complete with emoticons. We really used to print these out to share with each other at school!
When looking through some old childhood papers a while back, I stumbled across diary entry that made me cackle:

I cannot remember how she saw this or if she made this up lol. I've wondered if maybe she somehow saw a doujinshi or something at a comic store. This was like the holy grail for my tiny, baby brain. Luckily for me, I figured out how to use the internet for fujoshi purposes in a couple of years lol.
As for the band stuff, my friends were all obsessed with a few bands at the time (mid 00s emo/scene/poppunk bullshit), and for me this was primarily Fall Out Boy, so we'd write what I would now consider RPF or X/reader and make these fucking shrines to them in our lockers and bedrooms. I remember I had friends who got the teenybop sort of magazines and they would save all of the Pete pictures for me so I could add them to this collage I made. I also used to follow the band blog when it existed around like 2006-2008 and lord....I remember talking to all of my friends about updates and speculating about their personal lives and such. I even went to a secret show that I somehow figured out was happening in my city based on weird clues on that blog. Somehow, at age 14, I convinced my mom to take me to this show in a fuckin hole-in-the-wall club on the outskirts of the city, which was shut down a couple months later for selling alcohol to minors lol. We waited outside in the snow for like 3 hours, and (thankfully) we and about 200 other people got in and it wasn't a scam. And somehow I fought through the crowd enough to manage to touch Pete's leg, the peak of our parasocial relationship (I am cringing so hard at old me...). Thankfully, the band broke up like right after that, which was probably for the best. And thankfully, I completely lost interest in them and became a boomer when they reunited a few years later.
5. How often has fic made you cry?
I can't remember if I've cried from a fic before 「(゚ペ)?? I am p sure I've cried reading doujinshi though. I think I just don't read enough fics to say I have. The doujins that've made me cry are mostly by Goendama. "僕と魔王" (Boku To Maou) is one of my all time favorites that I am positive has made me cry. The codependency and grief gets me every time...
6. Rec a fic that you love!
One of my all time ever favorite fics is "Hawthorne" by TexasDreamer01. It's this really sweet post-canon reunion fic between Yuugi and Bakura that takes place right after Yuugi moves out on his own and Bakura is returning from packing up and disappearing after the events in Millennium World (I can't blame him). There's this really angsty, sweet back and forth between the two feeling guilty for not staying in touch with one another and a ton of grief they're processing related to being host bodies for the millennium items. There's also some really tender smut that follows haha. Sex is theraputic for both of em, especially to feel in control of their lives and bodies again. Very cute, and there's a lot of really nice sensory detail. One of my favorite parts of it is this section where Yuugi is looking at all of Bakura's scars (one of my all time favorite things to see in any Baku related content, haha):
7. Who's your ult OTP?
Whew, this is a really difficult question as someone who's a multishipper... I'd have to say Heartshipping (Yuugi/Bakura). I have really intense shippy feelings about this one cause it lets me think about all of the layers their relationship would have considering they have so much shared trauma and whatnot. Poor lil abandonment issue nerds TwT. I really like thinking about them finding comfort in one another since they're the only other one that would really have any understanding of what the other went through. I just love this deep, shared sense of empathy they have for one another and the whole tension of knowing that their other selves were enemies. Just so much to think about with this one and a nice overlap into other ships I also love a lot (Tendershipping (Bakura/Yami Bakura), Puzzleshipping (Yuugi/Yami Yuugi), and Darkshipping (Yami Bakura/Yami Yuugi)). The great thing about YGO DM is there are a lot of overlapping ships by the nature of bodysharing haha. And this is reminding me to eventually write a manifesto for Heartshipping to really get my thoughts out!
8. Share a pic that would convince someone to fall for your current fandom!
Oh man, this is so hard to do with only one image... I think something I really love about the original YGO manga is how intense the relationships are between the characters. There are a lot of moments that have made me really emotional, but one of the top would have to be this moment between Jounouchi and Yuugi:

Gay rights!
9. Have you ever met a fandom friend IRL?
I went even further than that, I married one! Ha! But yes, I've met a few online fandom friends irl, usually just hosting em for a bit. Sometimes you vibe in person and sometimes you don't.
10. What's the last fandom merch or craft you got?
I think that'd have to be these 20+ year old stickers I got of the Bakurae from when the Toei anime was being aired. Haven't had a chance to display em yet!

11. Rare pairs, big ships, or gen?
A mix of rare and common for me, I think. I ship like. Basically the entire DM cast lol. So I have a lot of food sources. As for GX and ArcV, I'm much more particular, and I think I tend to gravitate to less common ships for those fandoms. Though as far as who I like to talk to about ships, it tends to be other people into rarepairs cause they tend to be less judgemental and shipwar-y, and there have been plenty of times I've been turned on to a ship because of how passionate someone was when describing it to me or sharing something they made for it.
12. Are you multi-fandom or mono-fannish?
I'm pretty monogamous with YGO lol but I dabble in multi-fanning. Kinda like I'm married to YGO but it lets me swing with other things from time to time.
13. When did you last travel for a con, concert, fanmeet, or cupsleeve event?
I have no fuckin clue what a cupsleeve is, so I'm gonna have to look this up...
Huh, well, I definitely haven't been to anything like this, but I would love to. It reminds me of fan meetups I read about at little hotel conference rooms or restaurants in the 90s and 00s. I don't think there are a lot of events like this in the US anymore cause everything has gotten real big and corporate as far as meetups are concerned (also the US is BIG and it's hard I think for people to be able to travel and connect like this cause you may very well be the only person in your city (or state) interested in something). I have no idea what it would take to coordinate anything like that, but it's a cute idea. No clue how a cafe would take to that kinda business here. I'd love to go to a non-corpo fanmeet sometime.
I've never been to a con, but I've always wanted to go. Though with COVID, that's been something I've not felt comfortable doing. I've been to a ton of concerts though! Last one I went to was an outdoor festival sorta thing where I listened to a few local acts. I'd like to be able to go to more concerts, but again, that's something I'm not sure I'm comfortable with at an inside venue. I miss being in crowds like that and feeling the music so deeply.
14. How did you get into your current fandom?
Watchin' Kids WB in the early 00s lol.
15. What's your favorite trope?
I FUCKIN LOVE CODEPENDENCY IN FICS. I WILL EAT THAT SHIT UP WITH A SPOON. ESPECIALLY WHEN A OTHERWORLDLY BEING REALIZES THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY DEPENDENT ON THEIR LESS POWERFUL TARGET OF...affection?? Love? Hate? Whatever their feelings are--GOOD SHIT!
16. What are 3 tags that will make you click no matter what?
- Possession
- Awkward Sexual Situations
- Character Study
17. Fav fest you've prompted/read/written for?
GXrarepairsweek was really fun to write and read for last year. I've also enjoyed participating in the
sakuraexchange. For OC stuff, I've really enjoyed
artcade for a few years. Lots of really cool people there! And I've also enjoyed running the
ygorarepairs mini bang for a couple of years (and will again later this year). I ran ArcVWeek on Twitter for a year, which was fun but I don't feel like I have the spoons for it anymore.
18. Share an upcoming fest you're excited about!
Really excited to participate in
battleshipex! I also have a friend that proposed the idea of Fubuki Week, so I'm hoping that pans out cause it'll give me a good excuse to finish a shelved fic I'm halfway through for him. Currently participating in this year's Artcade too!
19. What's your favorite episode, song, moment, etc. from your current fandom?
Oh man.....there are so many favorites I have lol. I think my favorite part of YGO DM is literally the entire backstory of Malik and Rishid's relationship.
(CW for mild gore and facial mutilation)

And then toward the end of Battle City where Rishid is convincing Malik to live. Oh man. That part still hits me really hard and I still get really emotional when I read this section. Goddamn the love and care and CODEPENDENCY between these two.

And what a beautiful message that everyone is deserving of living even if you've lived through terrible things. I've not read a lot of manga period that really gets into this theme, especially in relation to child abuse, so this part hits especially hard. It's really beautiful to see themes like this handled with so much care and love.
I think my favorite moment from YGO GX would have to be episode 47, where Manjoume gets Fubuki's permission to try and court Asuka. It's also a beach episode!!
God, I had to clip and add English captions to this and was just sitting here blushing and cringing so hard at how awkward everything is. God I love it so much. Fubuki is so extra. Manjoume is so extra. Asuka just has to tolerate these two knuckleheads thirsting for her. I love every moment of this entire episode. So good for shipping all of them...together....all time fave OT3.
As for ArcV, I think I'd have to say my favorite moment is the duel between Shingo and Yuugo (episode 72) It's just so FUN and I love Yuuya and Yuugo having their weird, possessed by the devil brain video call in the middle of all of it. It makes me think back to the duel between Yuuya and Shingo during the Miami Championship (also a really really good duel). There are so many duels I really love in Arc-V, but this one has a mix of a lot of things I really love about this show. And it's such a pretty episode too, especially with the fireworks toward the end. This is where I think Shingo really steps into his theatrics in a more confident way, like totally away from Yuuya, and I love seeing that development with him.

Aren't they so cute?!!!

We also get so many good Shingo moments in this epsiode <3<3<3

I tag anyone who read this that found these questions interesting and wants to try to answer em! Feel free to even pick and choose :).
Wanna answer it yourself? Here's all the questions formatted for you to easily nab:

He squirmed at the sensation, ticklish. Yugi murmured an absent apology, smoothing the imaginary marks with a trail of kisses, continuing on his unanticipated way with a patter of fingers. Callouses were lingered at with a careful circling, a nail scraping at a particularly rough one in curiosity; they were all catalogued – in much the same way each new booster pack was – compared to his memories and postulated on what could have caused each of them. Admittedly, he didn’t have much in the way of his own (lifting boxes for the shop was one thing, and while the time showed on his hands, there weren’t many ones unusual to the trade, nor untouched by burns from so many years ago), but he had seen a variety on others. Hiroto and Katsuya had almost identical ones, from their high school days, even if the former had accumulated more because of his job at the local police department. Anzu had on hers the marks of years of practice with the balance bar.
But these hands… these hands he knew had the same marks that his darker half had in the memory RPG – the way the top of palm bore the brunt of a shifting handle, fingers and thick muscle of thumb supported the other side – minute marks littered fingertips and back of hand; some even up to the middle of his forearm, Yugi discovered, pushing up the coat sleeves with a consuming desire to know what touch life had left this lost friend before him. One nick looked ghastly when laid side by side the others – a welt diagonally across, scar tissue twisting the pale skin into something that managed not to be too deep. He frowned at the puckered skin, laying a palm over it.

I have no fuckin clue what a cupsleeve is, so I'm gonna have to look this up...
A cupsleeve event is an event run by a fansite for a group/member of that group, typically on an anniversary for the group such as their 5th year as a group or a member's birthday. Cup sleeves are the sleeves that you put around a drink like a hot cup of coffee. These are typically decorated with the picture of the group or the member's face in a pose with other artwork.
Usually the items they give out are cup sleeves, but they sometimes also have member soda cans on sale too. Sometimes they'll do a whole coffee cup design. They will usually give out small goodies like free photocards, mini posters, keychains, etc. Its only limited by the amount of money they want to spend.

Thanks for showing off Malik and Rishid's no good very bad abusive backstory ❤️ they have a relatively small segment compared to other relationships, but they really hit in the nuts. All YGO friendships are beautiful and make me swell with gayness! Some have more ritual scarification and child abuse than others 🥺🥺

Date: 2023-07-15 10:10 pm (UTC)I loved reading your thoughts about Heartshipping - Yuugi and Ryou really are so similar, and have so many of the same experiences (and trauma...) that I def feel like they'd understand each other on a level other people could never reach. And yes, that wonderful tension and enmity between their other selves too.
Also much <3 for that panel of Yuugi and Jounouchi, I just remember how Jou used to be a school bully and look how far he, and Yuugi, have come since then ;_; Love them both so much.
