So I've been busy with a variety of things, but at least busy in a way I enjoy rather than work related. Just wanted to make a quick post to share what's up!
I built another keyboard! This time, it was a commission. I fucked up my hand a little bit fighting with the pcb being weirdly tight for some of the switches, but it functions and I'm excited to see what the commissioner thinks once she's not sick with COVID. It's a Melody 96 for those interested with SP Star Magic Girl switches. Used the stabs that came with it and lubed em up nice.

I also got into tofu making! It's been something I've wanted to try for a while, but never felt like I had the time for it. I've made 2 batches so far, and it seems pretty foolproof. I use the gypsum method for coagulation, but I'm curious to try lemon juice sometime too. I also want to see if I can master different firmnesses. I made the first batch super firm and it was so good and literally bouncey lol. 2nd batch was thicc and normal firmness. Will be experimenting with different seeds and beans sometime because I've been following Mary's Test Kitchen and her tofu experiments and am super inspired by it. There's something really wonderful about knowing exactly how something is made and putting in all of that labor yourself. Also now I can say that I'm milkin nuts n beans like some kinda weird vegan xbox achievement. I'll be making pumpkin seed tofu this weekend for my inlaws, so I'm hopin they like it!

Behold! All of the tofu makin steps! Literally gotta squeeze the pulp outta the milk and then you're left with okara that has this really cool texture like kinetic sand or something like playdough. We ended up using a lot of ours in some bread, which adds a lot of protein and fiber to it (lol I'm so old god...) but there are a lot of things you can do with tofu making byproducts, including the whey! Made a really nice soup with it actually :^)

Here's the first and second attempt side by side (second attempt on the right is the thicc boy I mentioned.) The first attempt used about a pound of soybeans and the second I used 2 pounds. It was super firm though! So it was very filling.
Other than keyboardin and cookin and stuff like that, I also finally got a chance to use my Pentax K1000 to shoot some nature photography a couple weekends ago! It was really cool learning how to use the camera, and it's been SO LONG since I shot with an manual, analog camera. I haven't had a chance to develop the film yet, but I'm really looking forward to soon. My plan is to go through a few rolls before sending anything to a lab (and I'm not sure I trust myself enough to develop my own film yet), so I'll have to scan and share the best of once I have that!
I've had a lot of really bad luck lately with car troubles and student loan shit, but I'm happy I at least have these little things to keep me going. It's been nice having a life outside of work! And I think I've come pretty far disconnecting my identity from my profession now. I genuinely feel like I had a midlife crisis like 20 years early...like I'm aging so rapidly mentally jfc. My brain is so fucked up lol. It'll be a miracle if I can from thoughts when I'm like 60 or whatever. Been feelin pretty doomery about the state of the world and feeling very unsure if it's even worth saving for some distant dream of retirement when there's probably going to be nothing to retire to considering I won't be old enough to retire by most standards til the 2050s, and even then, I'm skeptical with the climate shit and the government eroding every kind of welfare system for people that I'll just be expected to work til I die lol. I want to at the very least own a singular piece of property cause that's one thing that can't be taken away so long as I can pay property tax or whatever. That's not something that you can simply get when you retire. I guess I'd rather live a better life when I'm younger and capable of working harder than to be scrimping and saving every cent I make to throw into some bullshit retirement plan that could very well get tanked cause it depends on rich ppl gambling on stocks and shit to make any interest. I know what I'm saying is probably bananas to some ppl who are like really into having investments and shit, but I really do not care how much money I have when I'm geriatric. I just want to own where I'm living so I can't have landlords and shit fuck me over. I know there's always like property tax and shit, but I feel like I would much rather have the security of mind that as long as I can pay that, I'm fine. VS not getting a house or condo or whatever until I'm like. lol 40 or something....god...and being miserable in my adulthood cause I have to move around constantly in shitty rentals. This has been a whim finance bro report lol. Don't save for retirement! Save for a fuckin house or shit cause you or the planet will be fuckin dead by the time you can do that and it's better to at least have a decent life and shelter while you're young enough to appreciate it and not die from natural disasters. Doomer rant over!
Been watchin some cool fuckin movies lately. Will make another post at some point with some recommendations or reviews, but I at least wanted to share this lil (not so lil anymore oops) update.

Date: 2023-11-02 04:34 pm (UTC)Love the keyboard! The color scheme reminds me of DVA from Overwatch, especially the hot pink with the neutrals. ♥

Date: 2023-11-03 01:52 am (UTC)Yeah I'm kind of similar with my "saving money" thing - like I'm convinced that a future that far ahead (I'll be of retirement age in the 2070s or so) is gonna mean jack shit for actually GETTING any of the privileges that older people these days take for granted.

Date: 2023-11-03 07:34 pm (UTC)THE HOLY TOFU PROCESS.. POG.. I guess it's a lot like how I used to watch my friend make soy/almond milk? Squeeze n' juice. But the pulp is useful for so many things 😺 The keyboard is swaggy too, nice warm metallic sunset colors. You be buildin' and makin'!
I hope things with health/money/car get better soon. Life loves to toss hardballs at our nuts. It really is having little things to do that keep us sane. Agreed that it's probably better to live in the moment with this [current everything]. People are always saying that things were better in the old days.. well, it's gonna be the old days NOW in the future!

Date: 2023-11-07 05:28 pm (UTC)the pumpkin seed tofu worked! it was actually easier (though more expensive cause pumpkin seeds are pricey) than soy tofu cause you dont even need a coagulant! it just curdles on its own when heated and then you get these really pretty pastel jade...pumpfu?

(here are pics of the tofu. im on mobile and dw does not like that...)
tasted soooo good... finally got to use an air fryer for it! it gets so puffy and crisp without anything added. i just did a quick marinade in garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika, and a lil soy sauce and it was divine. absolutely special occasion tofu you make when former president obama comes over for dinner.
thank you. -_- im really hoping my luck will turn around. all of these things falling apart at once is stressful, but thats life i guess.

Date: 2023-11-10 02:52 am (UTC)oh the tofu looks SO GOOD!!! Both raw as a minty green blop, and TRIPLE GOOD all fried up!!! Air fryers are totally godlike, and with that sauce you just described?!? OH DAMN! Obama would be proud.

Date: 2023-11-07 05:40 pm (UTC)i buy keyboards from a lot of different places. unfortunately, this is a hobby that tends to be ruled by limited group buys cause a lot of the custom stuff gets limited manufacturing, but i would highly recommend any boards by qwertykeys: https://www.qwertykeys.com/. its a DEEP rabbit hole and does require some mechanical/programming knowledge but a lot of the qk kits are fairly easy to assemble. though as an extreme word of caution, you will have to also buy switches and keycaps separately, so prices add up FAST
