I'm now up to 15,000 words of my unauthorized continuation of "Route 96 Kanata" and have commented on the story asking to make sure it's okay, what I'm doing, and that just straight up continuing the story from where Chapter 7 leaves off is not too far beyond the bounds of what its author might think of as an "inspired by" fic, which she does give blanket permission for. She might be thinking more along the lines of missing scenes or doing a different POV character or something. But I don't know, so thank you to everyone who encouraged me to just ask already.
I mean, personally, if someone was so in love with one of my WIPs that they wrote the next chapter themselves, I would be over the moon, and it wouldn't keep me from doing my own thing with the fic, not at all. I would love having alternate versions, like remixes! But the last thing I want to do is interfere with us all actually getting the ACTUAL REAL CHAPTER 8, whenever that happens. I always seem to do this; riff not only on canon but on fanfic I get obsessed with. I did it alot with Paian in Stargate SG-1 and she was so gracious and enthusiastic about it. Also if memory serves I wrote two fic in one of synecdochic's universes, back in the day, which were well-received. So, yeah. Fingers crossed.
Regardless, though:
I am having a blast, the characters are talking to me, I'm so happy. Even if I don't get to post it publicly I am so happy. I haven't been in a writing torrent like this since probably 2015. I mean, it's all I want to do. I wake up and go to sleep thinking about this story and it's just pouring out. SO FUCKING FUN. I mean, cancel other obligations in order to write more kind of fun. Orgasmic.
ALSO: CONNOR IS IN TORONTO. REPEAT CONNOR IS IN TORONTO. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
OMG how can we wait till April 2027 for season two of our little queer hockey show omgwtfbbq!!!!
I am stunned and impressed that there have been NO LEAKS regarding the preproduction. I MEAN SERIOUSLY. THAT IS SOME LOYALTY AND DISCIPLINE THERE PEOPLE.

The joy of creation MATTERS. I hold it as an absolute good, in my personal philosophy. Only you can determine where it fits in yours.

But I do not ever want to be the person who discourages a writer I admire from continuing a work!
I am so full of glee to be writing again after an almost ten year hiatus. I'm kind of choked up about it, actually.

Maybe they're trying to wait until right as filming starts so those new to the cast won't gets weeks of fandom judgment on their character worthiness before filming begins?

Date: 2026-07-09 03:48 pm (UTC)I also think there will be a very different situation with the set and the filming; I am sure they have someone handling press/media/social media for when filming starts because they are the very antithesis of under the radar this time around.
I am also sure they have an entire crew of people dedicated to filming Behind the Scenes stuff as well.
The main thing I hope is that they can throw a Cone of Silence around the entire thing and that everyone actually working on filming can tune out all of us and just their heads back to where we left off, and have fun and do what they did before to make it so magical.
A tall order.

Date: 2026-07-09 04:11 pm (UTC)I believe Tierney has said the budget hasn't really changed, because studios will say "You did this on a shoestring and had a massive hit. Do it again." Yet I hope they spend more money on dealing with media and fans who are going to be hanging around if they're filming in the open. The first one was filmed in a bit of a bubble where only the book readers were probably even aware it was in production.
I do know that no matter what, there's going to be complainers. People who watched the first season yet will pick apart the casting, plot, whatever, in season two. I'm trying to keep that in mind and I generally curate my online world enough to avoid most of it. Hope I can continue that for the next season.

I remember hearing an interview years ago with Mick Jagger when the Stones had brought out a new album after a long hiatus, and the music on it apparently went in some new directions, and Jagger was saying how worried he was that people wouldn't like it, wouldn't think it sounded like the Rolling Stones, until it dawned on him: We ARE the Rolling Stones. If WE play it, IT SOUNDS LIKE US BECAUSE WE ARE US.
Hopefully that is what they will get to.
OMG I am so gone for this show and this canon, help.

THIS TIMES A MILLION. I feel so stupidly & parasocially worried for the cast and crew, both for their sake and for the work on Season 2, that fan stalking is going to tarnish their magic and make it into a slog that kills the enthusiasm. It's bad enough when entitled fans ambush them out in public, but the thought of fans potentially ruining the show makes me see red. Leave them alone to do their jobs and we'll get more of what we love!
