tacit

Thursday, July 9th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 9, 2026 is:

tacit • \TASS-it\  • adjective

Tacit is a formal adjective used to describe something that is expressed or understood without being directly stated.

// As roommates, we had a tacit agreement that we would never pry into each other’s affairs.

See the entry >

Examples:

“Where modern documentaries are slick productions filled with preconceived notions, embedded narratives, and tacit approval of their subjects, [Frederick] Wiseman’s work is slow, contemplative, and refreshingly slant-free.” — Kevin Slane, Boston.com, 24 Feb. 2026

Did you know?

In the first chapter of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, the narrator Mr. Lockwood recounts warily encountering three dogs. Although he was sure to sit still, he admits that “imagining they would scarcely understand tacit insults, I unfortunately indulged in winking and making faces at the trio” (one subsequently leapt onto his knees in fury). His tacit insults were, by the relevant definition of tacit, not expressed with words (instead he used facial expressions). Tacit can also mean “implied or indicated (as by an act or by silence) but not expressed,” as when a tacit agreement is understood without being directly stated, and tacit approval is silently granted. Tacit traces back to the Latin verb tacēre, meaning “to be silent,” which is also the ancestor of the English adjective taciturn, used to describe someone who tends to be quiet.

Write Every Day: Day 8

the_siobhan: (What Would James Caan Do?)
Last night we watched Clueless, just to round out the Emma collection. For all that it's an incredibly dated and silly movie, there were a couple of laughs in it. Also a very young Ant-Man.

In conclusion, only Anya-Taylor Joy is capable of making me like the main character.

And I even managed to open up the WIP I interrupted and add an alibi sentence when I got home. Even better, I reread the current scene and can see very clearly how to make it much better, so the break to work on something else was definitely a good thing.

gambol

Wednesday, July 8th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 8, 2026 is:

gambol • \GAM-bul\  • verb

Gambol means "to run or jump in a lively way." It is used as a synonym of frolic.

// There are few sights more charming than that of lambs gamboling about in a meadow in full flower.

See the entry >

Examples:

"There's also charming footage of a couple gamboling in Central Park that might be some of the first scenes Warhol ever shot ... They're so lighthearted and playful, they're more in the spirit of his jaunty commercial drawings from the 1950s than of the deadpan Pop Art he was just then perfecting." — Blake Gopnik, The New York Times, 30 Jan. 2026

Did you know?

In Middle French, the noun gambade referred to the frisky spring of a jumping horse. In the early 1500s, its influence leapt into English twice, lending a playful bounce to both noun and verb forms of gambol. (The noun means "a skipping or leaping about in play.") Neither English word is restricted to horses, but rather can be used of any frolicsome creature. The more common of the two, the verb, suggests levity and spontaneity, and it tends to be used especially of the lively activity of children or animals engaged in active play.

Got down another 250 words last night and the story is finished. I'm going to give it a couple of days of rest then I'll go in and look for the usual grammar errors, perspective shifts, and repeated words.

Tonight is movie night with the GF so I may not get any words down but we'll see. Sometimes I can't go to bed right away after walking in the door. perfunctory

Tuesday, July 7th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 7, 2026 is:

perfunctory • \per-FUNK-tuh-ree\  • adjective

Perfunctory is a formal word used to describe something that is done without energy or enthusiasm because of habit or because it is expected.

// By the time my favorite band got to the last stop of the tour, their performance felt perfunctory.

See the entry >

Examples:

“Even a perfunctory ending can’t take away from the film’s fiery commitment to bearing witness to misogyny’s bitter fruit. Harris’ vision as a first-time filmmaker is crystal clear, and Is God Is already feels timeless, like a parable that could have been written decades ago, and will be handily passed down as pointed social critique for decades to come.” — Aisha Harris, NPR, 15 May 2026

Did you know?

A perfunctory explanation of the origins of perfunctory would be this: it comes from Latin. But given our passion for language, we can’t resist giving you all the details. Borrowed in the late 16th century, the word is specifically from the Late Latin perfunctorius, meaning “done in a careless or superficial manner.” Perfunctorius traces back to a form of perfungi (“to accomplish, perform, get through with”) and ultimately comes from two Latin sources, per-, meaning “through,” and fungi, meaning “to perform.” Fungi is also a source of such words as function, defunct, and fungible, but not fungus; that word is also from Latin, but it is most likely a modification of the Greek word spongos, meaning “sponge.”

Writing software/word processors pt.2

Tuesday, July 7th, 2026 07:50 am[personal profile] adore

I talked previously about a new online writing software/word processor called Skrib. I have since tried it out. What I liked about it was the search function, being able to toggle between documents from the sidebar, and having the planning/brainstorming board right there alongside my draft. However, I decided it's not for me based on a suggested edits feature that will literally give you suggestions for what to do with your sentences. Skrib purports to be anti-Gen AI and granted, the editorial suggestions feature isn't generating sentences. But telling you what you can do with your sentences comes too close and makes me uncomfortable. I know people use Grammarly or ProWritingAid for the same thing, but I personally don't like it. And it's not useful to me. My editing process is very gut-checky and vibes-based.

So I'm going to stick to Ellipsus. They've recently introduced a premium plan on top of their free one. Their free plan is great: I can have all the projects/documents I want and sync them to the cloud automatically, which covers the basics for me. And I can use timers, focus mode, and add collaborators. The premium plan introduces custom themes and something opt-in called 'emboss' which is like your writing fingerprint (it shows how many sessions you wrote the document in, typing speed, and other stuff meant to show you wrote it yourself, without using AI checkers). I'm irritated that our writing tools now are having to help writers prove they didn't use AI.

deepfake

Monday, July 6th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 6, 2026 is:

deepfake • \DEEP-fayk\  • noun

Deepfake refers to an image or recording that has been convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone as doing or saying something that was not actually done or said.

// The leaked video incriminating the school's dean was discovered to be a deepfake.

See the entry >

Examples:

"Overall, the deepfakes are impressive, if not maybe a tad uncanny, showing a near-perfect replica of how Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood looked in the late '70s." — Ethan Millman, The Hollywood Reporter, 14 May 2026

Did you know?

The old maxim "things aren’t always as they seem" seems more true than ever in the age of deepfakes. A deepfake is an image, or a video or audio recording, that has been edited using an algorithm to replace the person in the original with someone else (especially a public figure) in a way that makes it look authentic. The fake in deepfake is transparent: deepfakes are not real. The deep is less self-explanatory: this half of the term is specifically influenced by deep learning—that is, machine learning using artificial neural networks with multiple layers of algorithms.

250 years of straight bullshit

sewagelag00n: Calne Ca, a girl with pale skin and dark reddish brown hair in twintails. She has a bug on her head and wears a white collared shirt with detached arm sleeves and a black tie. She looks up with a smile. (Default)
So it was the USA's 250th anniversary yesterday. Woo... It is probably totally unsurprising that I (a left-leaning queer woman of color) do not have a high opinion of this country. My parents, however, do, and wanted to come see me to celebrate. I said well okay as long as you (physical therapists) tell me how to get rid of this fucking back pain. We ended up going to REI and getting me a new backpack because my old one was definitely contributing to the problems. My new backpack is a day pack from Osprey which definitely has more of a hiking/outdoorsy look. This doesn't particularly jive with my style, and I think the chest and hip straps will probably make me look a bit dorky, but it's better than seriously fucking my already-problematic back up. The hip strap is the biggest improvement, as it helps to distribute the weight to the legs. In addition, the design of the backpack means it sits flatter and closer to my body and is generally lighter all around. Once I put it on and strapped in, I realized... hey, wait, I can stand up straight without needing to lean forward to counteract the weight of the backpack! So hopefully that improves things in the long run. Man, my back suddenly decided to start killing me AGAIN just now... fuckfuckfuck this is horrible I should go cut myself ugh I hate this at least maybe then I can control the pain... whatever.

Honestly I was pretty hexcited about the whole shopping trip we did. First I got a sick new power bank that magnetizes to the back of your phone and wirelessly charges it. I'm majorly excited about this because it means (A) I won't have to worry about juggling a power bank along with my phone, since it just hugs the back of my phone tightly (B) the new power bank is way lighter (C) I don't need a cable to use it. I also got a pair of sandals for my beach trip with wolf bf next weekend! They're by crocs so they're made of waterproof rubber material but they're not, like. clogs. They're cute black strappy sandals with a platform and they're actually super comfortable. Um I also bought some tank tops/camis from Uniqlo because the heat has been fucking impossible and I realized I don't have enough sleeveless tops. And a top from fucking lululemon. I don't want to be that girl who wears lululemon in dance class but my mom had like a $200 gift card or some shit so I ended up buying a shirt. It's not activewear at all, it's a short sleeved cropped button up top that sits really nicely on me. Also I get to be a slut and unbutton it as much as possible. God I really wanted to go into Windsor because there were some hella cute and hella slutty outfits in the windows but I resisted because I don't need to spend non-gift card money on more fucking clothes...

Unfortunately I somehow managed to wreck my sleep schedule all over again. At least my time was spent doing creatively productive stuff. I fleshed out my DnD character a bit. She's an AU version of sickgirl/Syrin, who's plural and has an alter named Luer that's her child self. Then, an alien invades Syrin's mind. Syrin, remembering when Luer formed, mistakes the alien for being another alter, and doesn't believe the alien when she tells the truth about being from another planet and having possessed Syrin to destroy her mind and turn her into a puppet for alienkind. It's like a Cassandra truth situation, where we as the audience know that the alien is telling the complete truth but Syrin can't even conceptualize it because space aliens aren't even a pop culture thing in her (typical DnD fantasy type) world. I love dramatic irony.

I also properly wrote up an information doc about snuff porn studio au (Warning: Should be obviously NSFL from the title lol). It's an AU version of my placeless girls (a group of OCs including sickgirl from above that don't have a set canon and are mostly dolls for me to play with) that's a disturbing (yet also absurd and surreal) story about horrific sexual exploitation. I'm actually quite proud of it so do read it if you're interested. Many people I've shown the document to have read it and Felix seems to be a fan favorite, which I'm kind of touched by... I feel like I haven't been giving her enough love, so I drew a fully-rendered piece of her (artistic nudity, no private parts visible besides part of her chest).

I talked about queer issues and politics with a friend today, which was kind of depressing but kind of cathartic. We also discussed satire because I (satire enthusiast, and comedy enthusiast more generally) got pissed off at people not knowing the definition of satire, mixing it up with sarcasm and parody. Say it with me kids: Satire is a genre of fiction that uses hexaggeration, irony, and ridicule to lampoon the ugly injustices of society. Satire is NOT saying one thing when you mean another (that's sarcasm) or a retelling of a story that pokes fun at it (that's parody).

Speaking of satire, I finished up reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and... by fucking god, that was a doozy. I genuinely gasped out loud at one moment and read the rest of the book with one hand over my mouth. I recommend this book, although it gets heavy and depressing. It's also horrifying in that it feels so current. Like, when I was reading this book I was thinking, "god, this is what our society is going to be like in 20 years...". Well, it's a slight hexaggeration, but horrifying nonetheless.

It only occurred to me today that I should have used the Jean Chretien icon for July 1st and the Jimmy Carter one for July 4. What the hell was I thinking?

Anyway. Yesterday was a job day so that was pretty much all I did. (Today is also job day.)

Back in the Before Times I used to do all my reading on the bus to and from work. I still read in transit but now I also have made it a habit that after dinner I spend an hour sitting on my couch reading. (This has the added benefit that the cat can sit on me so he actually stops screaming for a whole 60 minutes. My cat is very broken.)

Right now I'm reading Emma. Lately the gf and I have been on an Austin kick, watching all the movies that aren't Pride & Prejudice. Our last two movies were the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma (1996) and the Anya-Taylor Joy Emma (2020). They were pretty different so I started re-reading the book to see which one I think is more accurate.

this is just me nattering about Emma )

acquisitive

Sunday, July 5th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 5, 2026 is:

acquisitive • \uh-KWIZ-uh-tiv\  • adjective

Someone or something described as acquisitive is characterized by a strong desire to own or acquire more things.

// The game aims to teach middle schoolers to balance their acquisitive instincts with a consideration of what will benefit society as a whole.

See the entry >

Examples:

“The Athenians, say the Corinthians in Thucydides’s history, are innovative, adventurous, swift to action, acquisitive and keen to expand their empire.” — Edith Hall, The Daily Telegraph (London), 2 May 2026

Did you know?

While acquisitive is a useful synonym of the likes of greedy and avaricious, it’s relatively unknown compared to its more popular lexical relations, acquire and acquisition. The former of that pair is most often used to mean “to get as one’s own,” as in “skills acquired through practice”; the latter refers either to the act of acquiring something, as in “the acquisition of skills,” or to something acquired or gained, as in “the museum’s recent acquisitions.” All three have as their ultimate source the Latin word acquīrere, meaning “to acquire.” While acquire and acquisition have both been in use since the 15th century, acquisitive is a bit younger. The word has a somewhat rare use meaning “capable of acquiring” that dates to the late 16th century, but its “greedy” meaning dates only to the early 19th century.

the_siobhan: (What Would Jiminy Cricket Do?)
Yesterday I went to my dad's house while his wife was out dealing with appointments. I was outside for about 10 minutes on either side of the trip and it was quite enough, thank you. Also their house doesn't have AC. It's relatively cool because it's an old house with tiny windows and they've invested heavily in insulation and blackout blinds, but the humidity is still pretty awful even in the shade. Also houses like that were very much designed to cool off overnight, and cooler nights in the summer hasn't really happened here for at least a decade.

Meanwhile my dad was refusing to nap in the room with the fan. I swear the man is a real-life lizard. He's always been like that.

Home, dinner, comfort Old Man Cat over the trauma of not being the centre of somebody's attention for six hours, and finally writing. I took out an old story I've been thinking about recently and I'm already pretty happy with it but I think I can make it better. Moved a few things around and added about 600 net new words.

semiquincentennial

Saturday, July 4th, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 4, 2026 is:

semiquincentennial • \sem-ee-kwin-sen-TEN-ee-ul\  • noun

Semiquincentennial refers to a 250th anniversary or its celebration. The word can also be used as an adjective to describe something related to or associated with such an anniversary or its celebration, as in “semiquincentennial festivities.”

// The town’s annual fireworks show promises to be even more spectacular than usual in honor of the nation’s semiquincentennial.

See the entry >

Examples:

“July 4, 2026 marks the nation’s semiquincentennial—its 250th birthday since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.” — Kathryn Palmer, USA Today, 13 June 2025

Did you know?

Everyone knows that if you stick a feather in your hat for, say, a Fourth of July celebration, it is called “macaroni.” But what does a Yankee Doodle Dandy call the celebration itself, specifically when it marks the 250th year since the nation’s founding? Such a special day calls for a special word and semiquincentennial fits the bill, as it does for any anniversary of the same esteemed and venerable vintage. If the word’s mouthful of seven syllables overwhelms, it’s simple to break down. The prefix semi- here means “half in quantity or value,” while quincentennial refers to a whopping 500th anniversary or its celebration. (Quin- comes from the Latin word quinque, meaning “five,” and centennial comes in part from the Latin centum, meaning “hundred.”) Hence a semiquincentennial is celebrated precisely halfway en route to a quincentennial. May knowing this etymology be a feather in your cap at your semiquincentennial BBQ.

Write Every Day: Day 3

the_siobhan: (What Would Jimmy Carter Do?)
We managed a couple of hours of digging in the heat and humidity yesterday and that was enough of that. So we knocked off early and ate hamburgers and drank beer. And watched Spider-Noir in the "authentic" black and white. (Beautifully shot, the lighting team should get a trophy. Incoherent plot. Nicholas Cage chewing the scenery in magnificent form.)

The other useful accomplishment of the day was I managed to find the manual for my new thermostat. Apparently this model is only sold in Canada and therefore all the manufacturer's page had was manuals in French (insert Gaullic eye-roll here). After some searching I found a copy in English on a third-party site. And get this, changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius isn't just a matter of pressing a sequence of buttons. You literally have to take the cover off, go into the wiring and sever a specific connection. So once it's done you can't go back. Who made this decision? That is the dumbest UI choice I have ever heard of.

Anyway, done now so I can look at my thermostat and understand what I'm seeing. After Daughter went home I sat down and tightened up the last scene I wrote and threw a few hundreds more words at it.

corrode

Friday, July 3rd, 2026 01:00 am[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 3, 2026 is:

corrode • \kuh-ROHD\  • verb

Corrode means "to slowly break apart and destroy (metal, an object, etc.) through a chemical process" or "to undergo such a process." It is also used as a synonym of undermine to mean "to gradually destroy or weaken."

// Several sections of the pipe have corroded and will need to be replaced.

// Years of lies and secrets had corroded their relationship.

See the entry >

Examples:

"Each piece is made of durable steel with a powder coating that won’t rust, fade, or corrode in the weather." — Shea Simmons, Southern Living, 29 Apr. 2026

Did you know?

Corrode comes from the Latin verb corrōdere, meaning "to gnaw or chew up." Corrōdere, in turn, combines the prefix cor- (used here as an intensifier with the meaning of "completely") with the verb rōdere ("to gnaw"). (You may recognize another rōdere descendent, rodent, as a word for members of an order of gnaw-happy mammals.) At one time, corrode was used to literally indicate the action of gnawing away, as in "woodworms corroded the wood." But it is the more figurative senses from the action of gnawing or eating away that have persisted, as in "salt water corroded the iron" or "a lack of transparency by local officials is corroding public trust."

Reading Wrap-up 6/26

After reading a ton of books in May, the numbers are down again in June. But that makes sense since I read a lot of shorter stuff in May and I picked longer books in June. So let's look at the books.

Bulgakov, Mikhail: The Master and Margarita. Penguin Classics. 2016.
This one was - mostly - a dud. I should probably preface this by telling you that I have a very complicated relationship with Russian literature. Well, actually it's not at all complicated. I just don't seem to like the Russians. I did like Bulgakov's Heart of  Dog a few years back, so I thought The Master and Margarita would be a safe bet. And it surely is a great book, but it's so entrenched in its time and political and societal situation that it's basically impossible to take much away from the novel without putting in some serious effort, twenty non-fiction titles about the Soviet Union and a university course.

Setterfield, Diane: Bellman & Black. Orion. 2013.
After The Thirteenth Tale (which I didn't like much) and Once upon a River this was now the third Setterfield novel I read. And I enjoyed this a lot! In a way, it's the coming-of-age story of William Bellman during the industrial revolution in England. He first works in a spinning mill and then becomes the owner of said mill. In the end, he envisions and builds a huge department store. The story follows his whole life from his youth to his deathbed. Entrenched in this plot is a very subtle ghost story (the Black of the title). The story played to Setterfield's strength, I think, and wasn't bored one minute.

Jenkins Reid, Taylor: Atmosphere. Ballatine. 2025.
I don't even remember why I picked up The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but ever since then I'm a fan of the author. So of course I picked up her newest. This was a lot of fun again. I just like how Reid surpasses the romance genre and simply writes good stories that also happen to have a romance in them. This was a great book, but the ending made it a favourite.

Macaulay, Rose: The Towers of Trebizond. Naxos Audio. 2024.
Gosh, I love Macaulay's writing. I really have to get my hands on as many of her books as I can. This one, says the all-knowing internet, is her most successful novel. And I agree, it's so far the best I've read from her. It's an autobiographical novel told from the perspective of young Laurie who travels through Turkey with her aunt Dot. The prose is quick-witted and funny, the humour is right up my alley and the audiobook was a delight. I admit, the story dragged a bit when Laurie is back in England. But apart from that detail, this was marvellous. I highly recommend trying Macaulay!

Write Every Day: Day 2

the_siobhan: (What Would Jaques Cousteau Do?)
Yesterday's virtual event didn't happen for some reason. Oh well, maybe it will get rescheduled.

Back to job today and then Daughter is coming over later this afternoon to help me dig in the yard. (I have french drain that overflowed last month, it was a whole thing.) Whether or not I have the wherewithal to write tonight will largely depend on how much the sun melts my brain. I have a hat. I have sunscreen. Wish me luck.
