Vertical Take-Off and Landing, also known as VTOL, refers to a ship's ability to take off, hover, and land vertically, much like a helicopter or certain modern aircraft (e.g., the Harrier jet or F-35).

Some ships (e.g., the Drake Cutlass or Aegis Reclaimer) have specialized thrusters that engage when VTOL mode is activated. These thrusters typically provide upward thrust for rapid take-off, stability and controlled movement during vertical flight.
