I have some of my furry pals following me here! Cool!

Not too much to see, since I haven't blogged here in a while, and when I do it's usually about little cartoon Ghostbusters named Peter.

But hi hello, and welcome to my show!

I really need to remember to update this thing.

In a nutshell, life's been busy. I got a promotion at my job, I got married, and I've been kept busy with all that and my artwork. but here I am, so that's a thing.

Uh, lessee.... I updated my Dreamwidth description to focus more on Peter. I also re-set up on AO3 account, and I'll look into uploading some of the older stories I used to write when I was more into Star trek:
https://archiveofourown.org/users/TDotBabs

Also, been uploading a ton of my Peter art onto my Deviantart account:
http://tdotbabs.deviantart.com/gallery/48648503/Peter-Venkman

I have a couple new pics in the works, so keep an eye out for those as well. :)

Sometimes I think I'm the only person on the face of the earth that truly understands how every character in Real Ghostbusters rolls.

So many people fail to properly get Ray Stantz. Apparently liking comics and cartoons means he's immature, and looking for the good in people makes him a naive fool and overall he's stupid.

Here's the deal: Ray gets into scrapes, not because he's easily manipulated but because he gives people the benefit of the doubt. He tries to help, see the good in people and do the right thing! Why is that so terrible? If more people would actively watch the show, they'd see that Ray picks his fights. He has his derp moments, but EVERYONE on that show does. That doesn't define his character. His strengths do!

Am I the only one who really sees Ray's wisdom and zen-like discipline?? Peter is the "child" character. That part of the equation is a known thing. He's impulsive, he doesn't understand how the world works half the time, and he's still growing up and figuring stuff out. But Ray, even though he likes fun stuff, is just that: An adult who likes fun stuff. To call him naive, immature, or feeble for that is stupid. that's like calling every Brony, every furry, and every sci-fi geek a feeb. If anything, Ray is the one cartoon character that defines us and sums everything up.

Ray shows that you can be a functioning stable adult in society without giving up what you love. He shows you can still have balance and wisdom, but still have the discipline to balance it out and love life and love what you love and be YOU.

Good lord, I understood Ray on this level when I was TEN. Why is it so hard for people twice my age to see this?

ARGH

And here I am, delurking once more.

I can't think of much to post though yet. Not until I organize my thoughts a little more, anyway. So in the meantime, have some cute.

Site is over here: http://www.agentwithstyle.com

DETAILS: Agent with Style is a fanzine publisher that focuses on sci fi and older TV shows, and recently I've been approached by them to help break into newer areas of fandom like the furry subculture and Brony fandom.

If you write fiction or fan fiction, these folks want your talent! If they get enough interest, they'd like to start expanding their sales at events like Anthrocon and Bronycon.

I have a REALLY great story idea that I would love to see written, but I don't want to write it because I'm not a writer, I'm an artist.

Is there a group or anything where I can post this idea and hope that someone else runs with it? most of the groups I do see have strings attached, and I don't want to be stuck having to write something for someone else.

Little help?

To wit, "In your own space, talk about what you bring to fandom."

I bring my artwork and new challenges within. I bring my favourite characters and complete knowledge on their canon, and a good solid backing reason why they're important to me, and well, why they're important period.

I bring new perspectives, twists, and insights that other people may not have looked at before. I being diversity.

And I bring pink fur, paws and a tail cos I'm a furry, yo. Aroo!

If a story is about events, locations, plot, and characters that are solely in the movie Ghostbusters, than it makes no sense to insist that that story is about the cartoon Real Ghostbusters, when it doesn't reference the show at all.

Not that I actively encourage RGB fic, but come on, people, know your material.
tdotbabs: (Peter: Squicked)
Call it a political statement, call it opinion, call it my take on most of the Real Ghostbusters fanfic out there, but I'm still proud of how this picture came out.

Mind you, I've mellowed quite a bit since I initially drew this pic, but I still think a good lot of fanfic authors out there are batshit insane. :P Fortunately, for the types of demons a proton pack can't handle, a baseball bat does nicely.

Been trying to help breathe life into a Ghostbusters group on Yahoo, only...no dice. The moderators and owners are completely MIA, and since posts are moderated, that poses problems.

If Yahoo groups are a thing of the past now, where do fans go these days? Just might set up shop over wherever that is, instead!

Okay true story: When I was like, 10, I did these comic strips about baby Ghostbusters and they have all these adventures with proton packs and stuff made out of baby toys. One of the stories entails the Ghostbusters being sucked down a drain, and at one point, Winston gets separated from the others, and then they find him again, and he knows how to get home. Egon or someone asks Winston how he knows all this, and Winston turns around and proudly announces, "The slug on my bum told me!" And I drew a slug and...yeah.

Well, I told Gabi about all this, and she BEGGED me to show her on Skype. So I did, and she thought this was the funniest thing she ever saw. So SHE ended up drawing Baby Ghostbusters complete with Bum Slug ™ and then talked me into inking and colouring it. o.o

I lead a very unusual life. XD

P.S. If you ever call the Ghostbusters to help rid your house of ghosts and a bunch of babies show up, well...you only have yourself to blame.

This is Blair Sandburg:

This is Roland Orzabal from Tears for Fears:

NOW do you people believe me when I say Blair looks like something out of Tears for Fears??

On a side note, I mentioned this to ladies at MediaWest, and a ton of them had no clue who Tears for Fears was. Not even after I played a section of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" on my iPod. My brain STILL can't wrap my mind around that one. Okay, so a bunch of folks also had no idea who New Kids on the Block were. That's fine, I was 20 years younger than a lot of people there and there's and understandable generation gap going on, but Tears for Fears? And a couple didn't know who Duran Duran were? Good lord, how sheltered/isolated from society did you have to be in the 80s to COMPLETELY miss those memos???

I've brought this up recently in response to various discussions I've had with folks regarding slash and after thinking about it, figured I'd put it into its own entry. Granted these are my personal thoughts. I know slash is a thing. Shatner thought it was dumb, Roddenberry thought it was odd, Lucas was never keen on it and yet slash persevered regardless. So it is what it is. Don't like it, don't read it, I know the rule and abide by it though I like to keep an open mind I've read Pony femslash that's been pretty good, in addition to some nice Trek fics and stories by Omorka about the Ghostbusters movie. But I digress. Read on! :)

-----------------

I don't see Peter Venkman as being anything other than straight. Part of it is because of canon: He's always after women, he's always attempting to date/have a girlfriend. People who worked on Real Ghostbusters say he's straight, the writer's bibles portray him as straight, you get the idea.

The other part is more political and identity on my part. I basically think Peter is 100% heterosexual because he's wired that way, and to stray from that would be out of character for HIM. Why? Cos that's how I'm wired, and it makes sense. These days, I get that sexuality equality is important. But what people are starting to preach now is that "everyone's a little bit gay", and that it's okay to be 100% gay...but NOT be 100% straight. I actually had people get in my face about that when I lived in Ohio. Personally I think that's wrong. You can be 100% gay, but you can also be 100% straight. I don't think "everyone's a little bit gay" or "everyone's bi". I think everyone is wired how they're wired, and however you swing is perfectly fine, even if it varies.

Now, I think Peter is heterosexual, yes. But that doesn't mean he's intolerant. If one of the other Ghostbusters were gay, he'd have no problem with it, so long as no one tried forcing it on him. Would he be curious? Somewhere along the line, maybe, but it would be similar to my experience. I tried kissing a girl once, just to test my own sexual boundaries. A zillion red flags went off in my head, telling me that no, this didn't feel right, and I stopped. Haven't tried again, because I was absolutely sure where I stood in my sexuality, and that incident solidified that. I see Peter maybe attempting something similar while he was in college. The kid DID attend a fraternity after all. I don't see him getting far with it though, and I don't EVER see him attempting that with Ray or Egon. But outside of that, I see him as I see myself. Straight and happy with himself.

I'm a member of Musechat (http://musechat.dreamwidth.org/profile). It's a fun, casual little RP blog, and it's pretty much an anything-goes kind of atmosphere. It's no mystery who my "muse" is. :)

Anyway, does anyone else wanna snag some Ghostbuster/RGB characters and join me? It's a lot of fun, and I'd love to have other characters for Peter to bounce off of.

Just some things you need to know about my version of Peter:
*He's a combination of the early episodes and conceptual factors that Gabi provided, so he's short, 25 years old, and he's younger than the other Ghostbusters by about 3 - 5 years. His personality is still pretty much the same though, and he sounds like Garfield. :)
*He's not stuck in the 80s, so he has an iPhone and a Razor Scooter, and he plays with his Wii U a lot. He also likes dubstep and electronica.
*He's straight.

NOTE: Playing from a different incarnation of the cartoon (RGB 2, EGB) or the movie versions is welcome, but keep in mind, Peter's going to react accordingly. He's going to be skeptical of a Janine that doesn't have the triangle glasses and the accent, or he's going to dismiss you as Harold Ramis who played his buddy Egon in the movie. This isn't a bad thing, this can make things fun!

That said...anyone wanna play? :D
tdotbabs: (Peter: WTF)
Just a heads up, I hate every single one of you that put me into this headspace to begin with. But here goes. Shipping.

So, I was watching the Real Ghostbusters episode, "Boo Dunit". There's a scene where Egon lands in Winston's lap, and Winston offers to read a story out loud to him. There's also a scene where Egon and Ray are bickering back and forth, and briefly there's a scene where Egon's holding onto Ray from behind for no real reason. And Peter? He's kind of off on his own, and other than a few bits where the other 3 regard him in annoyance, no one pays him too much mind.

So yeah. I can see Egon/Winston (And there need to be more of that, if you really want to Go There. Hell, Omorka? You wanna help me out with that one? :D), I can see Egon/Ray, I can see Ray/Winston, but Peter's....just this kid. He's lazy, irresponsible, makes messes, whines, and half the time is a hilariously useless little brat. The other 3 initially are supposed to be a few years older. But that's in the original 78 episodes.

When they retconned the show's continuity and got Dave Coulier to voice Peter, THEN he aged 10 years to about 35, grew a foot taller and become more robust looking. He became a completely different character who was much more in line with the other 3. But I always hated that version of him and the show was a flaming hot mess, so you want to ship that version of Peter, go ahead.

But the original Peter? Scrawny derpy little thing voiced by Lorenzo Music? Not seeing it, man. Leave the 'ships to the "grownups", and Let Cupcakes be Cupcakes.

(Obscure reference for the win!)

Robin Williams has died. It was suicide stemmed by depression.

As horrible as this is, it needs to be a wake up call to health care providers. In Canada, mental illness is not covered by health insurance. Need therapy? Need medication for your disorder? Yer on your own. OHIP will not cover you. This needs to change. Mental illness is far from being "cured" or even properly pinpointed, but we know enough about chemical balances in the brain to know that disorders like Depression, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar disorder are not psychosomatic, or merely a state of mind. And if people need medication or therapy to get reprieve from such demons, such help needs to be within their reach.

The human mind is so diverse and so complex, that it's very difficult to tell how much therapy or medication or what combination of both is needed to truly fix the problem. But making mental health care more available to people who desperately need it is a good starting point.
tdotbabs: (Peter: Bad day)
Okay seriously. I go to my profile and I have a million categories depicting who I'm watching, who watches me, who I gave my shoe size to, who has my shopping list, who I'm watching but doesn't watch me but COULD watch me of they do desired, and so on.

If there's one thing Livejournal does right, it's simplicity. Friends, mutual friends, friend of. BOOM. DONE.

Not that I mind Dreamwidth. But it could stand to be streamlined just a tad.

Today I went to the Lego store with my friends and I have finally come to grips with something I've suspected about myself for a very long time:

I SUCK at Lego building. Seriously. I can draw and imagine, and when pushed in the right way, I can write. But sit me down in front of a pile of Legos, and my mind goes blank. I have NO idea what to make with them, or how to go about it and all I see are a pile of little multicoloured blocks. :\

For someone as creative as I am, this is pretty frustrating.

Fan Dumb

I think I have this figured out now.

In 1990, someone wrote a Real Ghostbusters fan fiction called "Breathless Anticipation", in which Peter is hospitalized and hooked up to a breathing machine because he's cursed by a ghost that steals his breath. This triggered the feels of other ladies who, at the time, were in their 30s, and so THEY glomped onto this story and started writing their own tearjerker stories where Peter is hospitalized and injured and sick. They weren't fans of the source material (a few of them I've talked to refuse to touch the show itself), they were only fans of THAT FIC. The story could have been about the Sentinel, or Star Trek, or My Little Pony or the Muppet Babies, and the result would have been the same. Only these ladies insist on calling themselves a "fandom" of Real Ghostbusters.

Uh, no. Refusing the canon material, refusing to watch the show, eschewing how the characters were intended to be, acknowledging fan fiction only, and reimagining things from the ground up to tailor to your ideas isn't being a fan of something. I'm not exactly sure WHAT'S that called, but it sure as heck isn't fandom.

But that's just me. What do you guys think? What, to you, defines being a fan of something?
