I have a number of resources I use, particularly whenever I write for Final Fantasy VII, as the canon is … convoluted, to say the least. In an effort to clean up my references folder, I've compiled a list of my favorite outside references for Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. This is by no means complete, and I expect that it will grow and change quite frequently. However, for now, it will suffice.

Canon Material
      [Script*] [Ultimania Translations**]
      * There are a few other goodies on this web page besides just the script. The Legend of Vascaroon and some interesting tidbits are presented.
** I didn't sort these translations mostly because they tend to be a little scattered. Mostly, they contain keywords and a few character profiles, including Ellone and Edea.

Fan Analyses
[Time and Ultimecia] [Squall Is Dead*] [Rinoa is Ultimecia*]
      * Quite personally, I think these last two items are rather difficult to believe. My own views slant much closer to the Time and Ultimecia essay's, but I didn't think it was particularly mature of me to shove my fingers in my ears and shout, "LALALA." To that end, I've provided links to the alternative theories that I've found over the years.

Time to think of a plot for my [community profile] hardmode fic this year. Last year, I wrote Sword Dance, a Star Ocean 2 fanfic featuring a Dias/Ashton pairing. I would really like to write a sequel to that fic (I already have a title! Moonlight Arc.) but after discussing with [personal profile] vangirl, I've decided that it's not really appropriate to write a direct sequel that requires knowledge of the previous story. So, in that case, I'm now at a bit of a loss as to what story I would like to write instead.

Part of me would very much like to write an FF7 fic I've been thinking about for a while, but since I was planning on writing an FF7 fic for [community profile] megaflare_ff this year, perhaps I shouldn't? At the same time, the idea of writing a petulant, teenage Rufus appeals to me on so many levels. Particularly when he's forced in the same room as a very uncomfortable Reeve. I like making Reeve uncomfortable; what can I say? Basically, the plot would involve Reeve tutoring Rufus in matters regarding the running of the plate, during which Rufus would indicate that he is far more interested in learning to manipulate people than actually learning about the plate.

Or I could write an FF8 fic, but once again, I'm already committed to writing an FF8 Cowboy AU for AU Big Bang. (Speaking of that AU, I'm totally looking for a beta for it; so if anyone knows anyone who'd like to read a cowboy!Irvine noir western, let me know~!) But, if I wrote for FF8, I could write my Ultimecia fic. The one I have planned that follows her transformation from Sorceress to the Ultimecia; however, that fic would be all OCs except for Ultimecia, and I'm not too sure how much I want to write that for a challenge!prompt. I might save it and just write it normally.

... I suppose I could write the FF7/FF8 crossover I've been flirting with? I mean, seriously, Quistis/Tifa is an exceptionally appealing pairing. Or Quistis/Elena. Prodigy!Pairing, anyone? Selphie/Yuffie, maybe? XD They get hit with an immense wave of radiation during the Lunar Cry, and perhaps Quistis's blue magic reacts a touch more violently than normal and she and a buddy (or, if I could finagle it, maybe Rinoa too) get shot through a magical wormhole into FF7's verse. The problem with that idea is that I really don't have a plot for it beyond, "OMG, CHARACTER INTERACTION IS AWESOME." And Eternal has proven that character interaction isn't actually enough plot for a crossover. Not for me, at least.

Meh. I guess I'll just keep thinking. Maybe I could figure out a way to make the SO2 one work? But I really want it to begin immediately after Sword Dance. Like, within the space of time that it takes the four characters to get to their feet and walk back to Linga. There's not really a tasteful way to keep it stand-alone. My Ururun/Rena fix will have to wait.

Wow, it's been a long time since I actually updated this thing, huh? I'm not really sure why I have so much trouble keeping a blog or a journal like this, but I bet it has something to do with how awkward I find friending people that I enjoy reading from but don't really know. I mean, really, there's just something creepy to me about tapping that subscribe button to their journal when I've only 'met' them in a few exchanges or something. ... That's really weird and rambly, so I'm going to hush on that.

Rambly writing technique changes )

That all being said, I might have found a new friend! Excitement is in the air! ... I'm such a little kid sometimes.

Also, I might need someone to tell me that it is not okay to write a Panic! At the Disco crossover with House, M.D.  No matter how much the idea of Dr. Robert Chase/Brendon Urie with snarky!House teasing Chase mercilessly appeals to me. ... Complete with Brendon fangirls showing up in the clinic to get checked over by Cha~ase. >.>  My brain scares me sometimes.

traxits: Irvine Kinneas, from FFVIII, sitting with his back against the wall, rifle in hand. Captioned, "Just a sign." (FF8 Just a Sign)
First of all, let me just state that I'm not in any way, shape, or form attempting to justify anything that Seifer did.  Instead, I'm attempting to sort out a list of jurisdiction and appropriate punishment for each of his offenses.  My results are a little surprising, even to myself, and I welcome any and all input.  I'm trying to do this to hammer out a trial scene for a piece of fanfiction that I am writing.

 Seifer Almasy's Crimes
-- Threatened to kill President Deling.
-- Tortured Edea's enemies.
-- Authorized a missile attack on Balamb and Trabia Gardens.
-- Attacked Balamb Garden with Galbadia Garden.
-- Authorized his soldiers to search and burn each city as they searched for Ellone.
-- Used the Lunatic Pandora to attack Esthar.
-- Kidnapped Ellone Loire.
-- Merged Rinoa Heartily into Sorceress Adel.

Two of those crimes are specifically Garden jurisdiction:

-- Authorizing a missile attack on Balamb and Trabia Gardens.
-- Attacking Balamb Garden with Galbadia Garden.

Attacking Balamb Garden with Galbadia Garden probably has to be punished "internally," by some punishment chosen by the Gardens.  I would assume that they had some sort of committee meeting between the Garden Masters and Headmasters to hash this out.  To a lesser extent, I would imagine that both Edea and Seifer would be tried by the committee on the missile attack as well.  The Gardens seem to keep to themselves to some degree, after all. With the exception of Galbadia Garden, of course, which has enjoyed a close relationship with the Galbadian Military.  However, even considering that, I would think that the Gardens authorize their punishments individually or as a committee, instead of turning it over to local governments.

Esthar Crimes:
-- Using the Lunatic Pandora to attack Esthar.
-- Kidnapping Ellone Loire.
-- Merging Rinoa Hearilty into Sorceress Adel.

These three crimes would be under Estharian jurisdiction, and given that Esthar is one of the few countries with all of the facts surrounding what actually happened, I would imagine that they pardoned Seifer, or at the worst, ordered him to never come back.  I mean, I can't see Rinoa or Ellone pressing legal charges against him after all, and using the Lunatic Pandora was an act that the Estharians seemed to view as coming from Ultimecia more than coming from Seifer.  Given the fact that Seifer didn't exactly hang around in Esthar after, I'm sure his involvement was hardly remembered by most.

That leaves us with three crimes that fall under Galbadian jurisdiction:
-- Threatening to kill President Deling.
-- Torturing Edea's enemies.
-- Authorizing his soldiers to search and burn each city as they searched for Ellone.

Seifer was tried and "executed" already for threatening to kill President Deling.  Even though it was clearly misdirection, it was a public announcement.  Does that mean that, according to the Galbadian government, he is legally dead?  If not, would they retry him for it?  I don't necessarily think so.  We could say that perhaps the Galbadian government has a law to prevent someone for being tried twice.  I know that's what I'm going to go with.  That leaves us with two crimes for which Seifer has to be held accountable for.

Torturing one's enemies is considered standard practice (I'm assuming, from the reactions everyone has in game) during war.  I'm not entirely certain that they would charge someone for it, but maybe I just need to do some more research.  I'm leaning toward no, given the fact that this country had a president who threw anyone he damn well pleased into jail.  That's canon, by the way.

Finally, with having authorized his soldiers to destroy each city after they searched it... Well, I'm honestly at a loss as to what to say to this.  Clearly, this is the "big" crime that remains unaccounted for.  Since Seifer was the Sorceress's general, he would be the one taking responsibility for this, but no casualties are ever mentioned in game.  I'm not sure if this is because the game developers just kind of ignored it, or if it's because no one actually died.  Clearly, none of the "main" cities are torched, but the game does imply that several smaller cities do exist.  So, perhaps some of those were burned, and we just didn't hear about it?

11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
That's a tough one, honestly. I enjoy writing tons of characters, and sometimes my favorite character isn't one of the ones I actually write a whole lot with. I suppose, if pressed, my favorite character to write ever would probably be a tie between Irvine Kinneas (FF8) and Reeve Tuesti (FF7). I mean, I have ten years of headcanon that goes with each of those two characters though, so that might be a large portion of what makes them fun to write.

Least favorite is just as difficult, if only because I struggle with so many characters. I hate writing Cid (FF7) though, and honestly, I have yet to find another character that gives me that much trouble.

As a side note, I'm going to just pick up here instead of trying to answer all of the questions I'm "late" on at once. Trips out of town are probably not helpful to these 30 day memes.

Full list of questions.

In other news, I just spent most of my morning/afternoon making images, my favorite of which, I just posted above. I also made an icon. ... Did you notice? XD I also started my Irvine fic (available for reading on Archive Of Our Own and fanfiction.net currently; might post to Luna later), but I really, really need a new summary for it. I just... I struggle so much with summaries, you know? I don't want to give the whole plot away, but I have to make it engaging, and just... gah.

I have two summaries so far, the one I'm using and an alternative that I'm considering:

- Women always claim to love the white hat, but in truth, they all prefer the black one. Gives them someone to fix, someone that they don't feel responsible for. Irvine lives by this motto, but after Time Compression, he finds himself lost, adrift.

-Even adopted by a Galbadian heiress, Irvine ends up at Garden by the time he's eleven. His only escape comes when he's hired out to assassinate the Sorceress. But after that, where can he go? What else can a sharpshooter do?

I need to think of some more. ... If anyone does think of more, shoot me a PM or comment or something? This thing is a monster of a fic, going from Irvine entering the orphanage to at least a year after the end of the game, and I'd hate to have the whole thing shot down because of my crappy summaries. XD

So, someone left a pregnant cat in labor in our yard this morning.  How charming.  I'll update with some more info after she's had her babies.  Maybe pictures, if she's feeling agreeable.

Besides that, I've been discussing FFVIII canon with some of the lovely folk from [community profile] boss_battle, and I have to say. ... I've never felt more out of my depth.  I'll have to replay the game and note the dialogue (why does that word come up as misspelled on my spell check? >.>) that supports what I was thinking/interpreting.  Only problem is that I'll have to do a speed run, and just write down the lines I'm looking for.  I really wish I still had all of my save files from playing the game years ago, but I don't even know where that memory card (or my game discs for that matter) is, so replaying is really my only choice aside from scripts.

On the good news, I've written four of the nine prompts that I've claimed on [community profile] areyougame, and although there are still eleven more prompts that I would like to write, I'm doing my best to restrain myself.  Seven of these twenty interesting prompts are my own, and I don't feel as obliged to write those first, aside from the Chisato/Precis one that I've been nagging at me ever since I signed up for [community profile] hardmode.  Speaking of, my Hardmode fic is finished and sitting pretty at 15,392 words, but that's before it gets beta'd.  We'll see how it looks afterward. ... I still have this nagging sensation that I'm going to end up doing my own art for it.

Anyway!  I'm off to play some more FFVIII.  Time to head to Timber.
