Jul. 8th, 2026 07:13 amI finished reading the Delano volume 2 omnibus.
... the thing with the monkey remains deeply weird and messed up. as is appropriate for a horror comic. But like. I feel sure there was another plan available. But no. He honey traps the spooky monkey to death.
... things like this make it awkward when explaining the history of John Constantine.
Horrorist and Pandemonium were very dark. The messed up stripping is the sort of image that stays with you. But the possible kindness with the veil is also memorable. Only then it is juxtaposed with them both being blindfolded and killed. Dark, followed by hell. And poker.
Playing a game he doesn't understand with other people's souls for chips and scraping through on luck, bluff, and cold reading the other players, is just the shorter summary of John's life.
And he is good at it.
But he is also always questioning how he got into it, if he should be there, and how much is just addiction, to magic or gambling or the overlap of both.
Also when people say he is mad and he just says Yeah?
Yeah.
It's interesting how many issues can just read as symptoms days with a few more demons. Days when nothing makes sense, or he can't feel anything and does unwise things to try to feel something even if just pain. And then coming out the other side feeling connected and like it's worth caring again. Makes his risks make a dark sort of sense.
On the other hand rounding off the omni with the one from 2000 about a 2025 where they're trying to kill off the monarchy or re establish it does the volume no favours. That one was in a sideways genre made of mockery and told in a more actiony style. You could keep most of it and do the other sort of horror with it but it was just not the same thing as the rest. Don't reckon I'll be rereading that.
Glad I bought the volume, lots to ponder.
