Gods, I'm spending too much time. I'm dissecting the book for all the McCoy moments. You'd think I didn't have a life.

Wrote this for troublewithdrabbles prompt, but wanted to post here for posterity.

*~*~*~*~*

James Kirk stumbles out of the shuttle, Leonard McCoy on his heels, the two of them almost landing flat on their faces.

“You two connected at the hip?” Capt. Christopher Pike asks. “Head to the Quartermaster, Building 16.” He shoves a holopad into Kirk’s hand. “Think you can manage to navigate?”

Kirk straightens, clears his throat, looks offended. “Uh, yeah.” He stares at the image illuminating off the pad.

“Three years?” Pike shakes his head. “If you’re here after three weeks, Kirk, we’ll have a party.”

McCoy smiles, takes the pad and points across the quad. “Order the Saurian brandy.”

Okay, so the question has arisen ... condoms or not in the 23rd century? Thoughts, anyone?

Also, Memory-Alpha describes cadet uniforms as being a jumpsuit with a jacket. Anyone have visual to confirm jumpsuit?

Curious points for fiction, of course.

Okay, so it probably won't be daily, but since I've squeed before about stuff, I thought I should make it official.

• Saw "Star Trek" for a second time Saturday. And bought the novel. It only gets better and Karl only gets more fucking adorable.
• Liza and I got another weekend together, just us. So nice. She's suffered the most during this bout with cancer, her whole life disrupted by me not being able to do what I normally do and my mom being around so much. Very nice just letting her drive and us going out of the house.
• Made pizzas and watched flicks Friday night. "Night at the Museum" and "Transformers" were both great. Why didn't I go to the theater?
• Breakfast with the in-laws this morning. Okay, that's only a semi-happy. But it was a free breakfast of pancakes.
• Finished and posted third McCoy/Kirk story. Even started fourth one.
• Made two new icons today. Semi-happy: Debating paid account for more icons. See below cut. )

Okay, I've seen it enough this week in "Star Trek" fiction on LJ that I'm getting annoyed. Yes, there is a ST:TOS canon from years back. It doesn't apply to the new ST world. That's well established in the film.

So stop giving McCoy a damned daughter.

The only things established in the film that Reboot!McCoy shares with TOS!McCoy are attending the University of Mississippi and being married at some point. Reboot!McCoy didn't mention a daughter, so let's not give him one. Another nuisance is his age. If you take that everything prior to the alternate reality ignited in 2255 is canon, then it's established by TOS that McCoy was born in 2227. Use a calculator, folks. That makes McCoy 28 when he meets Kirk.

I know this brings about the question of reconciling TOS canon to Reboot, but I think the film negates pretty much of the TOS canon, except what predates the alternate reality split in 2255.

Again, it's just my opinion. And I felt like a Thursday mini-rant.

Notes: This is a companion piece of sorts to No Single Event, a slight forward move in the story. If I keep writing in 200-word installments, I might get a whole story out. ☺

Notes: The italicized quote is from Antoine Saint-Exupery. Often misquoted as “A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us.”, it was a fic challenge in an LJ Kirk/McCoy community. It sparked my muse into a double drabble. Hey, it’s solo writing, which I do so very seldom.

The last 48 hours may be the best I've had since being diagnosed with cancer in February. Mom went home for a few days, leaving Liza to take care of me. And she's done great. She's been most disrupted by my not feeling well and the chemo schedule, so it was nice to make some "normal" time without my mom around. Since she can drive, she's my chauffeur, and she manages the wheelchair with style. We spent most of the day Saturday out and about, seeing "Star Trek" (more on that later) and shopping for my Mother's Day gift (sunglasses, new earbuds, the movie), before heading to a newsroom cookout for a bit. Then today, we went to O'Charley's for brunch (food horrible, but we had a great conversation).

"Star Trek" was great. GREAT! Of course, I spent part of brunch today explaining the allusions to TOS since she's never seen it. Or any "Star Trek" for that matter. what I liked, warning: spoilers )
