She Sat There
She sat there that night, knowing it could be her last. She wasn’t sure its finality was destined, and she knew there were slim to zero chances of her getting seriously injured or dying. But those thoughts were of little comfort when she knew far too well everything she once ruled over was far out of her reach now.

Plan B
I’m not sure where I first heard the phrase, “Always have a plan B,” but whether it was on a television show or from an older adult, the axiom is how I’ve built my life. When I was in grammar school and didn’t want to do my homework, my favorite plan B was to go to the teacher before class started and explain that I tried to do the assignment, but I just wasn’t getting it, and could they please explain it to me again? This excuse was so much better than, “My dog ate my homework.”

Ellafino
"I'm stuck." "What has you stuck?" "Ellafino." "Heh, heh. Yeah, right. What's going on?" "I'm...frozen. My mind freezes between words. I just sit here...almost as if I were paralyzed. Stuck. ... Zoning out. Tunnel vision sets in. I see only the computer screen, and the rest of the room blurs as if I'm not wearing my glasses. It takes effort to move my fingers to type. I...just want to sit here, mindlessly watching nothing happen, irritated that the grammar check puts a blue line under the word 'just.'"

Mom's
Breakfast in bed, because this is the only day you get that. Flowers and kids attacking you in bed at the crack of dawn. Kisses and hugs, that strangle the air out of your body. I hope all you moms out there got that this morning. The work you do is special and the most necessary career ever. No other career shapes the world and humanity like yours does. None.

The Blue Jean Brides
As I age, random memories come back to me with clarity. Today's nostalgic moment is about the 1970s. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing. This is a story of three men who found wives similarly and unconventionally. These men were attracted to what they saw in blue jeans.

• • • History moves like a train, passing through plains that each belong to a different era. And if you hold up a magnifying glass over any one of those eras, something unsettling becomes visible: the values people live by keep changing.

The Haus of Roots and Secrets
The salon was alive with sounds of clients talking over driers, electric razors humming, and Millennial jams grinding in the background. Had it not been a weekday, I wouldn't have been able to recognize the song so quickly. Deee-Lite's Groove is in the Heart. Classic.
