A friend's post about visiting a childhood home made me think about my first one. It was my parents' second; they lived somewhere else when they had my brother and moved in at some point before I was born. I lived in that house until the summer before I went to kindergarten. The post made me wonder how many childhood memories I actually have that took place there, and I decided to type out everything I could conjure up. This list may get updated.

Wishing I could be a ghost so I could have unlimited baloney and mayo (actually Miracle Whip) sandwiches, any time of day.

Grabbing an egg from the fridge, trying to cross the kitchen too fast in my socks, slipping and breaking the egg.

Wishing I could get my mom's attention while she ignored me on the phone and cutting the curly cord that was stretched all the way across the kitchen with the scissors I was using to cut graham crackers. Seeing the cord duct taped until the whole phone could be replaced because the cords weren't removable at the time.

Leaving the room I shared with my brother for some reason, probably because I couldn't sleep. Falling and getting my foot caught between a hamper that was in the hallway and the wall. Being stuck for what felt like hours but eventually freeing myself and going back to bed.

When Cathy snuck out and ran away but had built a decoy of herself out of towels and washcloths in a bed. I think I was the one who discovered it and had a hard time convincing anyone to go look because they thought she didn't feel well and should be allowed to rest. Cathy is the middle child of the three daughters my dad had with his first wife and was estranged from the family at a pretty young age. The bed detail is an interesting one because the house was a 2br/1ba and when the girls came, they stayed in the living room. I guess she pretended to be sick in order to get to (pretend to) lay down in the room I shared with my brother?

Natasha is here with the kitties. They were all having a lovely time in the back yard until Glacier decided to turn to liquid and squeeze under the deck. We had to unscrew a board to get him out, whoops. Natasha considered just waiting him out but I was concerned he maybe didn't actually remember how he got in or which way to go to get back out. He was happy to just sleep and figure it out later in the dark but that was not an option. It's never boring with Natasha around!

Avalanche has been locked in my room the whole time as her immediate response to company was incessant hissing. Fortunately my room is the master so she has a big window, a large bathroom with a smaller window, and a closet; it's almost a studio apartment in here.

We had a chill short bike ride to brunch and back and really beautiful food, I'm a little overcaffeinated and a little stressed after having to press Josh to get out the drill to unscrew one of the boards on the deck. Fortunately that turned out to be the right move and Natasha was able to grab Glacier. Board was replaced, all cats are locked inside now. Glacier kinda ruined the party. But they got a good couple hours of freedom in the sunshine, at least. And the house is nice, too. Tundra is sleeping contentedly in Avalanche's tunnel. They are all fine.

I've done nothing to get ready for the fire tower lookout other than print directions, but I've done these trips so many times. I just need one change of clothes, one swimsuit and a couple towels for the lake, bedding (washed the big comforter already), silks and bouldering pad, Josh's jetboil and fuel for coffee and tea in the morning, and food. We already have water and I plan to whip up a veggie pizza for us, cut up some cheese and apples and carrots and things, in the morning we can grab drinks and boiled eggs and yogurts and crackers and we can load up and head out around 9am. Check-in is at 1pm and it's a four hour drive so that's the earliest we could get there anyway. So I'll have t (Read more)

The Sparrowhawk's PT gave him a rather exigent list of things he should be doing. I can't help wondering why she didn't do this before, but at any rate, she has done so now. In addition to the gym he already attends, she wants him to do various PT-type exercises, weight training, and to walk fast for five minutes and then at a moderate speed for ten minutes every day. I'm not comfortable with him walking by himself, so I will go with him. We set out to make a good start on this project this morning. The Air Quality Index had gone down to merely moderate, so it seemed like a good time to venture out. It's rising again now--back in the Unhealthy range.

I'm still feeling very tired, and inclined to be cranky. By two pm I was thinking sadly of all the things that still had to happen before I could go back to bed. I made my own taco seasoning, with a little help from the internet, and turned the remainder of the pork loin into a spicy taco mix. It was accompanied by yellow rice, beans with peppers and onions, salad with cucumbers and tomatoes, salsa, and sour cream. Now I've mowed down most of the obstacles between me and getting horizontal again. . . .

a new month is approaching so please feel free to comment here with your nomination for august 2026. you have until the 25th of july to suggest and then we will vote with a poll (posted on the 26th). if there are no new nominations we will use the ones not chosen in the previous months to vote on.

the only rules regarding which books are eligible are:
  • it must be original fiction (any genre is fine).
  • it must be queer/lgbtqia+ in some way.
  • we would also like to avoid misery lit if possible, since that can be v hard to read and not fun at all esp when it comes to queer issues.
    • that's not to say we can't have angst or tragedy. we just don't want books of pure suffering that lead to no happy ending.
      • there is nuance with this! The Song of Achilles, for example, would be a fine suggestion (imo it has a lot more than suffering going on) but A Little Life would not be. if you're unsure, suggest anyway and we can consider it!

1x05 The Broca Divide

Original 2008 icons here.

I'm leaving town for a few weeks tomorrow, and so I have spent the last two days scrubbing my house from top to bottom. I love coming home after an extended journey to a perfectly clean house. In related news, I am extremely tired right now.

Louise Penny, Still Life (2005) -- Chief Inspector Armand Gamache goes to Three Pines to investigate the suspicious death of an elderly woman.

I listened to the audiobook while I washed my floors. Following a detective interviewing murder suspects in a quaint Quebec town was perfect for my purposes. The mystery portion of the novel was fine -- I guessed the killer and his motive even before the murder had actually taken place, but I thought the novel did a perfectly good job setting up red herrings and delayed realizations. (And even though I had the killer pegged early, I was completely flabbergasted by the climactic reveal, which literally no reader will ever see coming.) Unfortunately, there are a couple of subplots featuring painfully bad writing and completely flat characters. In particular, there is an extended subplot involving Gamache's ill-fated attempts to mentor an insubordinate subordinate, and the latter is so cartoonishly stupid and clueless that it completely broke my suspension of disbelief. No one could possibly be as dumb as this character is! After a while, it started to feel like I was reading some sort of didactic religious parable involving an impossibly perfect teacher/saint/prophet (Gamache) and an instructively foolish student (the subordinate). Have I been suckered into reading Stealth Christian Fiction again? I kept thinking suspiciously every time this subplot appeared. Is Aslan about to appear in this novel?

The 39 Steps (1935) -- I think this movie is less than the sum of its parts, but I am enchanted by the interpretation that protagonist Richard Hannay is not a hapless Canadian in the wrong place at the wrong time but instead a grifter scam-artist. The weird vibes when he takes a strange woman "hom (Read more)

Opening the night was Scott Gates. He parted ways with AJ Lee & Blue Summit in December 2025 and now performs with his own band. Scott played mandolin and was accompanied by Yoseff Tucker on guitar, Jack Kinney on banjo, and Zack Sharpe on bass, all from Yoseff Tucker and the Bow Ties. They opened with Doc Watson's You Must Come in at the Door, Scott wearing a genuine Soviet Air Force officer's hat! The band's 45-minute set consisted entirely of covers. The quartet sang around a single microphone and sounded great. I enjoyed Norman Blake's Randall Collins a lot, it was so powerful. The traditional I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground was also very energetic, while There Stands the Glass felt peaceful. An excellent bluegrass opener!

Sierra Hull was joined by Avery Merritt on fiddle, Erik Coveney on upright bass, Mark Raudabaugh on drums, and Shaun Richardson on acoustic guitar. The material that was unreleased when they played at HopMonk Novato two years ago has since appeared on albums, including the opening tune Boom, released on "A Tip Toe High Wire" in 2025. We also got all three parts of the instrumental "bluegrass concerto" called "The Movements," which sounded really unusual and fascinating. It has since also been officially released. Sierra and the band did not forget about the old bluegrass tunes, playing the Delmore Brothers' Blues Stay Away From Me and the traditional instrumental Angeline the Baker. The set concluded with Lord, That's a Long Way, another instrumental from "A Tip Toe High Wire". We got two more songs for the encore, both covers, Mickey Newbury's Sunshine and Tears for Fears' Mad World. Great show, with awesome acoustic sounds, though I felt it was a bit too heavy on the instrumental numbers. I missed Sierra's vocals from time to time.

Set list (Scott Gates, 6:01 PM — 6:45 PM): You Must Come in at the Door, I Lived in Her World, Sittin' in an All Nite Cafe, Randall Collins, Too Late to Walk the Floor, Take Me Back to the Range, A Face in t (Read more)

How many folks have I found and happily shared dirt on that are much less worse than me by what sits in my soul, either closeted by anonymity or lack of notoriety?

How many of us have not done something such as lie, hide something, take someone’s medication without a proper prescription, demonstrated improprietous or inappropriate sentiments towards another, stolen, cheated on taxes by not reporting income from lotteries or some “under the table” activity, spoken inconsistently, cloaked sexual activity, said cruel things about another, etc? Many of us are in the same water - more or less.

"French National Assembly rejects life imprisonment for serial rape of minors under 15"

Under Louis XVI (r. 1774–1792), the last king before the French Revolution, rape (viol) - especially of minors or repeat/aggravated cases - was a serious crime under Ancien Régime customary and royal law, often punishable by death. Common methods were hanging (for commoners), breaking on the wheel (roue, involving limb-breaking followed by display), or burning at the stake (especially if combined with sodomy or "crimes against nature").

the intimate bathing meme;
Image Image

Grooming is an important part of many species' rituals. It keeps them clean, healthy, and content. And a good bath? It can change the whole tone of a day from terrible to relaxed and blissful.

But nudity is sometimes viewed as a weakness - and it is almost always sexualized - so bathing is often kept a private matter. If you do share these moments with someone, they're almost always a significant other or a sexual partner.

Like you're doing now.

Whether it be after a battle or after sex (or before sex, even), the two of you are going to get clean. Be sure to help each other out with that, won't you? After all, there are places on the back that just can't be reached...

HOW TO PLAY:
  • Comment with your character, your prefs, etc.
  • If there are other grooming-related practices or kinks you'd like to include, like shaving, hair washing, mention them!
  • Reply to others!
[ Not immediately after because lord knows we need some time to ourselves, Pantalone will decide to do something he is not inclined towards:

Gatherings. Of a sort.

The Courtyard remains unpoisoned by the proceedings, so he more or less happens to make commentary saying 'later today/tonight' at 'a certain time' (pretend it is convenient for your character) for some relaxation. If they are not inclined, he cares less; if the character drops in he won't scream bloody murder.

If people wish to assist by asking how they may contribute to the gathering, he will alow them. He has stolen some snacks, placing them out in the gazebo as well. Drinks, as well.

Fresh air is the priority that isn't the execution grounds.

It presents a sort of freedom that every single one of them lacks besides their excitable host.

Welcome to the afterpaty. Enjoy your temporary respite...for however long it lasts. ]

Not as promised.

It is so difficult to stick to my promises, and they aren't even that hard. Why? Writing a couple of words a day on here should not b that difficult, but I cannot for the life of me do repetition. I lack routine so much yet I know I need it. I have tried putting motivational reminders and things and music on my phone, but they only provide a temporary boost. I find it hard to accept that I am at a loss for what to do.

I guess all I can do is plan. Waking up early tomorrow. Taking it one day at a time instead of committing to a week. Putting the reminders on my walls and not my phone. Going on the morning run. Lifting the evening weights. Eating the healthy food. Looking good and staying clean.

Cannot really commit to tomorrow, since my track record is so bad.

Another thing I have noticed in myself is a lack of creation and novelty, and too much consumption. But a difficulty in getting my brain to work in the first place. Maybe a lack of sleep is the issue, which I need to fix.

I did better than I thought in my exams. But still not what I wanted. But still improvement was there. Upward trajectory.

Enjoying my internship though I get humbled every day. Feel like I am in a mix of ER and The Devil Wears Prada. Privileged. Making lots of friends.

Holiday was fun and relaxing. Food good.

A and R are in town. I am glad they are but wish they weren't. Need to focus on myself. Will be adding some distance now.

Lots of disorganised thoughts, but some semblance of a plan.

Bye!

Scott missed Ilya like crazy. Even though they were texting constantly, and face-timed almost every day... it really wasn't the same.

By the time he was on the train to Boston though, he was already feeling better. Just anticipating seeing him again. It felt so different this time. Not just missing him, but... they were in an actual long distance relationship.

He didn't want to be recognized in Boston - why would he even be there? - so he was careful getting from the airport to Ilya's home, and then he ordered groceries from Door Dash rather than shopping.

It was also kind of strange to sleep in Ilya's bed without him. And he did resist a slight urge to snoop, though who knows what he would have even been looking for. (Though he really should make a joke about not finding an olympic medal in Ilya's underwear drawer...)

The next morning just after he got out of the shower he got a text from Ilya that he was on his way from the airport, so he started a pot of coffee. And also made some toast. When he heard the front door opening he was slathering Nutella onto a piece of bread.

The cartoon Caleb was watching was "foreign", and was in the native language of the creators, which is to say, not English. But they'd been kind enough to add a subtitle feature, which was handy though it did require a bit of splitting of one's attention.

Also he wasn't certain what kind of mood they were going for. The music was often rather cheerful considering it was about two young women left all by their lonesomes in a post-apocalyptic world. Or maybe he was looking at it wrong. The girls themselves were rather cheerful and enjoying the adventure. Maybe it was his own hang-up that he felt it should be more melancholy.

He was also making a list of things to look up later. All he knew about Japan so far was what he'd gleaned when he had read about World War 2.

I started my new German language course last week, having decided it made sense to start at A2.2. I thought I was a little more advanced than that, but my fears have largely been realized - in terms of vocabulary I am, but in terms of grammar, I am not. Consequently, it is proving to be half-useful and probably makes sense to start from here and attempt to secure B1 by the end of the year. That's certainly doable and with the group only numbering six, it is giving me plenty of opportunity to practice and learn. It's also not too daunting, while the homework seems to be going fine too. It's only a four-week course, two nights a week online, so we'll see how things look in mid-August but I may continue through.

There have been two main furry events this week. Thursday was the Fureigners Meet, which I didn't arrive at until 9:30pm due to work commitments. Wolfie came with me, but it was quite a small meet, with most of our usual friends there. We still had a nice chat with a few people though and once everyone had left, a trio of UK people from Hastings ended up playing on the pool table in the space we had reserved. They were here for a friend's wedding today and were great fun to chat with, wanting to know about all the craft beer spots and the like. In a way, we found it easier to talk to them than the furries, and were sad we had to leave to get the 00:53 train home (which has gladly now been reinstated). It was great to chat with them though and I hope they're enjoying their time here.

Today, Saturday, was the LGBTQ+ market down at Nollendorfplatz. This is one of the highlights on the calendar and Blue Panther had dropped me a message earlier in the week to say he was coming up from Basel. I arrived at 5:30pm and had a mooch around before meeting up with his crew around 6pm. We had a couple of beers, one of them bought me a snausage, and we largely just chatted about stuff. They had to leave at 8pm, leaving me on my own, but I hooked up with Kebi and Max, who were d (Read more)

Bluntly: this one's been a long time coming. It's going to be long, it's going to have details I've rarely spoken about or put together in one place. It's soul-searching, it's a journal, and it's a little bit of a thinkpiece. I'm posting it because I want to be able to say I've made my feelings known, if only to myself, but that doesn't mean my feelings about everything are going to be palatable; they're for me. Do not feel honour-bound to read this.

This is not a callout post. The only named person in any of these events is me. If you recognise an event or an interaction or an individual, we've lived the same pieces of that corner of the internet from different perspectives, and I'm happy for you and/or my condolences.

This is not a call to action. Not against anything, not for anything. It's just my feelings, complicated and contradictory as they are. If my words mean you want to do something more, or less, then go for it. If you read this and think 'damn this guy is whiny as hell and needs to get over it': I agree, though probably in a way that's kinder to myself than you're thinking.

This is not a cry for help. Maybe in earlier iterations, largely posted at like 1am on my Tumblr account or dumped into a friend's DMs on Discord, it has been. If you want to discuss, if you want to respond, I'd be happy for you to do so, but don't feel obliged to have any reaction to this at all. I'm not saying that as a sad little 'oh I don't think anyone will care about me', setting myself up for failure; I'm posting this because I am at a stage in processing it all where writing something is beneficial to me. It's about the action and not the reaction (I've had... various other states of mind on this. We'll get into it).

Are those all the disclaimers? Sure, for now. Maybe I'll need to add a few more later. Are we ready to begin? No, actually, just one more note: I haven't put trigger warnings on this piece. They're my feelings, and also I don't believe I'm going (Read more)
I recently read an article in a national geographic this past week about how terrible the dumping and waste of clothes can be in certain parts of the world. I always knew this was an issue - well not ALWAYS always, but probably at least the last 10 or so years I have had some knowledge on it. But reading the article and seeing the numbers really brought it more into light for me. I learned more about the textiles and how long it takes for them to decompose and better yet how much energy is needed to make such textiles. Our world and the people who live in it can be so wasteful... it's heartbreaking on so many ends. They mainly talked about the northern city in Chile, Atacama with it's large stretches' of landfills full of clothes, shoes and accessories. The article goes on to state that between years 2000 and 2014 production of clothing doubled and more than 60% of clothes were being bought than before, only wearing them for half as long as before.
Some are lucky to recycle the clothing like turning it into yarn or stuffing for cushions. Some of the clothes gets taken in and cleaned up and resold to places that has a market for that. Those people who spend their lives doing that see joy in these discarded clothes and the thought of them selling them and giving them another chance is bittersweet. But the thought of how much clothing in general gets made and the energy, materials like water and co2 emissions that get used for so many of those clothes to just end up in dumps is terrible. I feel like the word terrible is an understatement.... Polyester for example when in landfills leaches out chemicals into the soil. To make one pair of jeans it takes 2,000 gallons of water... that is the same amount as drinking 8 cups of water a ay for 10 years! Hemp seems to be more earth friendly than the other textiles they mentioned. The countries who are part of the problem seem to turn a blind eye to it or just don't bother to educate themselves maybe. I wanted to write about thi (Read more)

The Lotus Empire
by Tasha Suri

This is the final novel in the Burning Kingdoms series. The yaksa have returned to Ahiranya, but it quickly becomes clear that they are not saviors; they have their own agenda that is not designed for mortals. Both Malini and Priya must seek out ways of countering and ultimately destroying the yaksa so they can each save their world and the people they love. Their paths bring them together again but not entirely out of conflict. They each face the need for great sacrifices and great gambles in order to prevail.
The Lotus Empire was really, really good, and a fitting and satisfying conclusion to the story. While the focus is on Malini and Priya, there are several secondary characters who are crucial, espeically Rao and Bhumika. Their stories are also powerful and heartbreaking. I loved all the intertwining relationships between Malini, Priya, and their respective circles. I loved how hard everyone fought for their world and people. I absolutely loved the way Suri explored the nature of sacrifice, the double-edged swords of cosmic power, and how love shapes the world.

"Nothing about the world we live in will ever make sense to you unless you understand that you live under foreign occupation and are thus subject to the rules of the occupiers. If you do not start from there, you will search for multiple explanations and rationalizations for your misery and shortcomings that will lead you nowhere.

Your humiliation is the enemies goal. To take a hit and fight on is honorable. To take a beating every day and never truly put up any resistance is just sad. Humiliation robs you of your humanity, your will, your reason to fight on. Humiliation takes everything from you and debases it in front of all, it robs you of being worthy of empathy. It has been used by every occupier in history, it's our natural primal understanding of defeat. The Ottoman practice of Köçek was an ultimate example, similar to the concept of "Drag Kids" in modern America. Köçeks were a combination of dancers, clowns and prostitutes, they were young non-Muslim boys taken from their parents and trained to be willful sexual objects and entertainers for the Turks. The goal was to have the occupied think "if we allow that to be done to our boys what else can they do?" The answer is "anything". It is full spectrum domination of the minds of the conquered.

Your enemy doesn't want gay pride parades in your street, drag queens in your libraries, your son transgender, your parents dead from opioids and cancer, your daughter race mixing, your meat replaced with bugs all while your media laughs at you because they think it's for anyone's benefit. They want it because they know you don't want it, but can't stop them. They want to humiliate you. There isn't any other reason.
"

Fantastic Four (2005) directed by Tim Story

Written by Mark Frost and Michael France

Starring: Ioan Gruffud, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Julian McMahon, Kerry Washington

Synopsis: A group of astronauts gain superpowers after a cosmic radiation exposure and must use them to oppose the plans of their enemy, Doctor Victor Von Doom.

Did I watch it when it first come out? No. I only watched on TV later.

Highlights: it’s a fine movie - way better than all the bad reviews say. It’s bright, funny, serious when it needs to be, and only gets cringe sometimes. It gets the FF’s bickering dynamic of the early issues right.

The cast is also good.

Worldbuilding Notes: private company can afford a nifty space station of its own! But there doesn’t seem to be other futuristic tech around.

Little things that stood out: the CGI for Reed's powers might be a little hokey, but I likes that he takes different shapes (like a wheel) and even wraps himself around Ben when they're fighting.

Doom may blame Reed for his injuries all he wants, but it was his shields that failed.

The Plan: Reed wants to go to space to study the cosmic cloud that helped create life on Earth: interesting, but the stuff about understanding DNA and curing diseases is a bit of a stretch.

The fact that Doom’s plan to destroy the FF starts with a bit of subtle manipulation is OOC, though.

The Other Stuff: this movie is really fun and didn’t deserve all that negativity throw at him.

Doom is not the same Doom from the comics, but he retains the ego, the petty obsession with Reed Richards and the costume, so it isn’t all bad.

Would You Like Sugar With Your Stars? Sugar Detected in Interstellar Space for the First Time

Scientists have detected a simple sugar found in raspberries within the gas and dust at the center of the Milky Way.

It’s the first time a sugar molecule has been identified in interstellar media, having previously been found in our solar system on asteroids.

Writers, if you have ever had someone complained because you used "sugar" to describe a starry sky, you are now completely vindicated! There is sugar up there. :D

Personality

Charismatic and charming gentleman on the surface. Désir is a businessman owning establishments in an entertainment district just outside Base 52, including a hotel with a bar and night club, often catering to soldiers and other military personnel stationed nearby for entertainment and relaxation. It's said that he's very kind and generous when he likes someone, often doting on them, giving lavish gifts, and showering them with praise and affection. He will invite beautiful young men to keep him company, often those of lower status and wealth to lure them in with the promise that all their wants and needs will be taken care of, essentially becoming their "Sugar Daddy". Beneath the surface while out of view of the public-eye, Désir is a very self-centered, controlling, and a fickle pleasure seeker. He is very particular about what he does and does not want or like. A no-nonsense type of person, with nearly zero tolerance for those who don't follow his rules or those who try to cross him. He is prone to violent mood swings, leading him to violently punish the offender, or taking his bad mood out on someone else of his choosing amongst the "pets" he holds control over.

Appearance

Désir is 186cm (approx. 6' 1") tall with light brown skin and a noticeable mole to the right of his right eye, and one beside his bottom lip, on the same side. He has long, silvery-white hair that's slightly wavy and more curly at the tips; he often has it loosely tied back and hanging over his right shoulder, while his bangs are swept to the sides and obscure much of his left eye. His eyes are a de

It’s going to be difficult to avoid things related to The World Cup Tournament for the next day or two, so it seems like an appropriate time to discuss what we call “Soccer” and what most of the rest of the world calls “Football” and understand why just about every other country is fanatical about the sport and why the USA isn’t, but why that is finally starting to change.

Let’s start with our perspective. There are four big team sports that Americans follow with regularity: Baseball, Basketball, Hockey and our version of Football, with the yard markers and the oblong shaped ball. And there are rivalries in these various sports that help define each particular fan. The Yankees and Dodgers have met in the October Classic more than any two teams have (Yanks lead the tally, 8 to 4, though the Dodgers won the last couple - and are in town facing the Yanks right now). Competition in Baseball is world renowned. It seems like just seconds ago that the Knicks avenged their previous loss in the NBA Finals to the Spurs with a resounding victory over them on the hardwood. Knicks in 5. What about Michigan and Ohio State on the college gridiron? (And certainly there’s many college rivalries involved in all these various sports.)

Hockey is the sport that most resembles the game in question, and for most US residents, it’s also the fourth go-to choice of the four big sports. Of course Canada is steeped in Hockey, but that has to do with the climate of their country. It stays cold in Canada until May, and is frigid again in late September. Why wouldn’t they embrace a game that’s played on ice? And by proxy, we got involved with that game because our neighbors were so connected with it. How could we not at least have a mild interest in hockey when the country that shares our longest border is living that sport, practically year round?

But the NHL, MLB, NFL and NBA are all organizations with teams that have long, storied histories. By comparison, the MLS or Major (Read more)
ImageToday, I went to Linville Gorge to check out the section of river between the Devil’s Hole and Babel Tower Trails. I had previously scouted this section in December of 2021 and identified several potential swimming holes, but most didn’t look like standouts. The ones that did were on the Devil’s Hole end, and I tried to check them out in August 2022, but the river was high and murky from recent rains, so I was unable to depth-check any potential jumps. Revisiting this area has never been high on my to-do list, but my mission for today wasn’t necessarily to find top-shelf swimming holes. My go-to water shoes (first generation Vibram V-Trails) finally wore out, so I recently replaced them with a pair of Vibram V-Alphas and wanted to test them before my upcoming California trip. Also, much of the southeast is under an intense heatwave. Raleigh is over 100 degrees without the heat index this weekend, and the mountains feel like Raleigh does normally, so I figured this would be a good opportunity to enjoy some North Carolina swimming holes with California weather. I opted not to invite anyone, because I didn’t want to be responsible for giving them a heatstroke.

Given that I needed a creek-walk that I could do alone, the Devil’s Hole to Babel stretch seemed most ideal: it’s super bouldery and paralleled by the Linville Gorge Trail (LGT) for most of the way, plus it’s a holiday weekend, so I figured it wouldn’t be entirely secluded. Given the heat risk, I deliberated on whether to use the Babel Tower or Devil’s Hole Trail. They’re both roughly the same length and elevation loss, but Babel is more gradual with a brutal descent packed into the very end, whereas Devil’s Hole maintains a consistent grade for most of the way. I opted for Devil’s Hole, since it’s shaded while Babel is on an exposed ridge. Plus, I remember the climb out on the Babel side kicking my ass pretty hard in winter, so I (Read more)
The air quality has improved from Thursday's "so extreme it's breaking the scale" to yesterday's "hazardous" to today's "extremely unhealthy" so I went to the hardware store and bought duct tape and MERV-13 air filters. Unfortunately, they only had a size that didn't quite fit my box fans, but with duct tape all things are possible, so I made it work.

I would have preferred to make a cube, but it turns out that if you get a 4- or 5-inch filter (which was all they had left), you can just duct tape it directly to the box fan instead and you get roughly the same effect. I made a prototype and it seems to be working okay; I have no idea how it's actually affecting indoor air quality, but it made me feel better and that was helpful. I'll do the other box fan later tonight.

Today, the sun is visible but the air is still yellow filtered and smokey, and it felt like my eyes were watering when I was outside. I wore a N95 mask and long sleeves and pants and took a shower and washed them when I got home, and hopefully that helped reduced my exposure to whatever nasty invisible shit is in the air. At times we smelled smoke, but it had noticeably improved by the time I got back.

I saw a few people wearing masks when I was out, but mostly people were just going about their normal lives and doing stuff outside, and I guess they live in different worlds than I do.

The real question I'm wrestling with right now is sunk cost fallacy - at what point do I and the people I'm with cut our losses and go someplace else if conditions do not improve? I don't love the idea of cutting my vacation short but breathing in wildfire smoke indefinitely is also Not Great, so all the options suck. At least I can leave - lots of people have lost their homes and entire towns have been burnt to the ground, but aside from the smoke there's no danger to my area. I guess we'll give it a few days and see what happens, especially since it's not entirely my decision.

2026 has already sucked so much that that p (Read more)

What else needs to be said? Release your inner warrior and partake in some epic (or hilariously bad) battles! Do you use a sword? Are you a martial arts master? Are you a wizard? Can you even fight?

A year ago, I was disgruntled by Copilot missing chunks of meetings, amused by Granddaughter trying to walk backwards, publishing Power BI reports, concerned about safeguarding, making progress with ECHH, and getting excited by an announcement that a film version of The Silver Chair was due to be released this year.

I'd completely forgotten about TSC, so I've just looked it up. Apparently, it never really got off the ground, but Netflix have the rights now and are making The Magician's Nephew (because chronology... <_< ), which is due to be released next year. So, I have that to look forward to! The article I read said the next film might be TLTWATW... or The Horse and His Boy... I'd love to see a film adaptation of THAHB but it shouldn't be the second. Even if you're going for Chronology, you have to have TLTWATW first! Anyway, I'll take any on-screen Narnia I can get.

Today started with some journal prep whilst watching Whoculture videos. Apparently people have criticised Ellie for being naïve and too positive - I've always found her commentary very balanced and commented to that effect.

After breakfast, the shopping arrived. I had planned to do speg bol for tea, but the basa fillets needed eating by tomorrow and I've got a roast planned for tomorrow, so we had the fish tonight. Husband wasn't sure he was in the mood, but he cleaned his plate!

I did my usual cleaning jobs, and gave my cucumber plant some extra water - after producing 3 cucumbers, all the new 'babies' have just shrivelled up, so I'm hoping to revive it. And Husband's katsura tree has put out some fresh leaves, so I'm feeling more positive about that, too.

There were some JWs 'on patrol', who complemented us on the garden but didn't stop for a chat.

I've made some good progress with LoD, getting past 3 boss battles! I was rather unprepared in terms of items for the Doel fight, and it would probably have been a good idea to save the dragoon transformation until he transformed, but Dart and Rose (Read more)

Friday Five

1. Books or movies?

Books! (Cheaper, don't require equipment, and more readily available - also I have more control over the visuals).

2. Indoors or outdoors?

Indoors. It's why I live in a city and not in rural area.

3. Morning person or night owl?

Definitely not a morning person! I used to be a night owl, but work is forcing me to get up early and get to bed early....so...

4. Online messaging or physical letters?

Love online messaging for its immediacy and ability for back and forth in real time. That said? I miss letters.

5. Dragons or unicorns?

Dragons!

The rain was an allegedly dirty rain. I wouldn't know? I stayed indoors vegetating in front of the telly and doing random exercises.

Nor did it eliminate as much of the smoke as hoped? It's slightly better than before at 163 as opposed to 186.

The air purifiers, fan and A/C are on, and the windows closed.

I finished Rooster today. I loved the characters. Among the few things I've seen in which I like everybody. It also has some hilarious belly laugh moments. Steve Caroll is adorable in it, and I found it more relatable than expected? It takes place in a small liberal arts college during the fall. A best-selling author is asked to teach a creative writing course, while visiting as a guest lecturer in order to check on his daughter who is undergoing the breakup of her marriage.

Started Ride or Die on Prime. It's about a British assassin (Hannah W from Ted Lasso) and a Minister of Parliament's Wife (Octavia Butler) trying to figure out who targeted them, and what the latter's husband was up to, and who is tracking the former. Kind of odd-couple female buddy comedy? Both are in their 50s. I'm definitely the demographic for this? So enjoying it.

Flirting with and resisting the urge to watch Lee Cronin's The Mummy (I honestly think it would bother me and keep me up at night, so read the plot synopsis instead.) Still intrigued by it. My mind is curious about a child ending up mummified in a sarcophagus and why on Earth (Read more)

"Down!" came somebody's bellow. It was a trusted source, however, which had Stevie act on impulse as he threw himself over Christine and Sarah-Therese just as a loud explosion rippled and boomed overhead.

Gasping slightly, barely able to keep anything straight, Stevie shielded his wife and daughter as best he could as the ripple of incoming torpedoes was interrupted by follow-up blasts. Almost immediately his communicator was overwhelmed with reports and voices signaling similar attacks all over the palace, and his heart dropped. He and Christine had Sarah-Therese, but the boys had finally started going back to regular classes as she'd calmed down and everybody slept more regularly.

"Get her to the shelter," he grunted at Christine, looking panicked as he finally pulled away during a moment of quiet. "I'll go find the boys."

Book 31 of 2026: Star Trek: The Enterprise Logs

⭐️⭐️⭐️: Look – by just about any realistic objective measure (script, plot, science, fidelity to nearly any aspect of Star Trek, printing quality, etc.), these are bad; two stars would be generous. But as artifacts of 1970s Trek comics medium, they’re certainly entertaining, if in a very cringey sort of way. Not really worth looking for unless you’re a Trek and/or comics collector, but if you run across them and are curious, you’ll likely get some chuckles.

While working on the text portion for the next Flowers on the Plains installment I went into my New Pelagiad/Dragon Valley save which is technically a new game since I imported all of my Elder Scrolls households into a fresh copy of the world. There were a few more things I wanted to do before allowing time to start passing, such as adding Nerelle's cat and kitten along with Saje's kitten to their respective households. I also added Eclipse to Aengoth's household so that Helseth can be tortured in the medieval/fantasy version of the world as well as the western one.

When adding cat items to Saje's house I realized for the first time how crowded the place is. I gave him and Chaaya a house that was made by the creator of Moon Valley and was put up for a separate download. It's a beautiful house, but after trying to fit pet dishes, a litter box, and scratching posts in there I found myself apologizing to the characters for putting them in a house that is so filled with clutter that they can barely move. I cleaned out the house and made it more livable, but before long I'm going to gift their household with a large sum of money and use it to enlarge the place. They'll be needing more room since it likely won't be long before they're expecting a little bundle of joy.

Back at the Gold Willow house, after the farming chores were done Neldor and Calonir took Casper for a walk to the dog park.

After a delicate negotiation of whose spoons allowed what, we stub ends of the polycule got to hang out today when J (D's girlfriend's other partner) came to visit this afternoon while those two are at EMF.

They're such lovely company, it was really nice. V introduced them to the gluten-free bettered fish takeaway, so it feels like a successful visit all round. When they'd left, V and I were talking about how they've only been to our house once or twice, and not for ages.

Indeed, once they were home, they said on the group chat

I know EMF is every two years but that is nothing compared to the rarity of tired people being able to hang out and chat. It was soul nourishing, thank you both xx

I even got a few minutes on my bike -- for now the third day in a row -- just because when they asked for directions to something I didn't trust myself to explain it in a way they could understand, but getting my own bike and demonstrating it only took about five minutes. (When I came back toward home, on my own, a guy who'd been leaning up against a fence was still there and said "You lost, mate?" In a friendly way but I was like how dare, I am so not lost that I was helping someone else not get lost! haha.)

There are 5 squares remaining. FIVE. FIVE SQUARES LEFT! I also have generated some brown yarn for brown squares, which are the only sort of squares I have left to make. Is it *enough* brown yarn? Probably not. It's enough for 3 squares, definitely. I need five squares.
We were supposed to get a big thunderstorm with hail today. We got... a short thunderstorm. I have no idea if there was hail. It pulled down some branches and cleaned some of the crap out of the air, at least temporarily. I'll take it.

There has been a lot of Canadians posting indignantly about the size of the Boreal forest and how hard it is to manage and how small the population is and all I can think of is that there are people living there and they're the ones who are currently being burned out of their homes. I'm pretty sure it's mostly Crown Land - just give it back to the local tribes. They managed it just fine before white people moved here, including doing controlled burns and if they no longer have that generational knowledge there are plenty of modern-day experts who can help them figure out the details. Give them the resources and the control they need and get out of their way, they'd certainly do a better job than the people currently in charge.

So that's my take on Landback, anyway.

Since all of yesterday's plans got cancelled, I at least got lots of writing done. 1100 words last night!

How? How is this allowed for an encyclopedia? They just ban anyone who disagrees with the consensus?

The difference between American made and European made nazi-depicting media, that in American media that while you know the nazis are defeated, the focus is on WHO defeated it. It's a powerfantasy with heroic sacrifice.

In European made nazi-depicting media, even when the movies is not about the war itself, whenever you see a nazi officer, YOU KNOW SOMETHING TERRIBLE WILL HAPPEN, even off-screen, especially if you are from those ex-axis powers countries yourself and you sit through those scenes with anxiety which makes horror movies harmless child cartoons. But also... holy shit look at those uniforms drooldrool

Anyway, just finished Gloomy Sunday (1999) and holy shit, I just realized that poetic justice and revenge stories with women will be my favorite things in movies. I still can't find coherent words.

Found an endearing little film last night - Your Monster. Ending sucked but that's why we have fandom and fandom delivered. I recommend it for the first 95%, after that YMMV. There's a dance scene that is *chef's kiss* and had me down a youtube rabbit hole with the endless amount of GREAT dance scenes in films especially enemies-to-lovers. Although, the best surely is the dance scene from Only Lovers Left Alive and that one is NOT tropey just delish.

It's a boring day and I'm OKAY with that because I need a little boring in my life right now.

I am reading a Writing Craft book and it's so so good and some of you might really enjoy it and be inspired by it, too. Into The Woods.

Dear Diary,

So I went to Walmart and had a fun time. I almost bought some more notebooks since some of them were only thirty-eight cents. But I forgot Walmart doesn't take Apple Pay. Pretty crazy. I didn't have anything on my card. I can't wait until I get paid again.

As with large swaths of the rest of the upper North America, the DC area got a return of wildfire smoke this week. It sort of hit Thursday, then it really hit on Friday. When I went out to drive to the Metro you could clearly see the haze in the air just looking down my short block. Smacked the 'recirculate air' button on the car AC as I headed out. At the Metro parking lot I got out, took a whiff of the charred smell and promptly put on a COVID mask, which actually helped a lot with the smell. Took it off once I got inside the train car, and noticed the smell fading as we rode through the tunnels through most of the District on my way to Virginia.

But each time the train exited a tunnel into the open air, the smoke smell returned.

The views on bridge over the Potomac were surreal. Couldn't clearly see anything past the two bridges on either side of the Metro bridge - the airport was out of sight, as were any of the memorials and monuments, normally clearly seen in the background. It wasn't quite as bad once I got down to Alexandria as it had been up at home in Maryland, but it was still pretty bad. The ride home in the evening was more of the same; Maryland was worse, and the smell persisted.

Today we went out shopping for some needed polo shirts for me and it was still hot and smokey. Big rainstorms on the drive home seem to have driven most of it away, however. Am hoping they're able to take care of the source fires soon, for the sake of the local communities up in Canuckistan, as well as everyone else's lungs.
A year or so ago I dug up my old copy of Michaela Roessner's The Stars Dispose from my parents' house to reread in preparation for a panel on food in fantasy because I vaguely remembered it as a Fantasy Novel About Renaissance Culinary Arts. However I did not get around to it in time and so I set it aside and [personal profile] genarti picked it up and read it instead, and then we passed it on to another friend who was looking for books in the brief nineties trend of Fantasy Novels about Renaissance-ish Apprentices [a trend I am always hoping will be revived, so far in vain]. Now it has at last returned to me and I thought: well, I didn't read it for the panel on food in fantasy, but perhaps now I'll read it in time for the panel on centering the arts in alt-history --

Well, I didn't actually succeed in doing that either. But I have now reread it! What a weird and charming* book!

*with caveats

So, the fantasy premise of this book is that there are various parallel universes that all impact each other, and some bad parallel universe forces are Out to Get the City of Florence Specifically for ambiguous reasons. The fate of the Medici is all tied into this in some way so it's very important that beautiful wise clever baby Catherine de Medici (yes, that Catherine de Medici) (this isn't quite popehunk but it's not NOT that either) survive and flourish, so the city can flourish, and both the city's chief astrologer and Catherine de Medici's cook are doing different sorts of magic to ensure that happens despite the sieges and plagues and various other dangers that are constantly besetting Florence through this time.

This is the premise, and the plot, more or less, but it's not what the book actually cares about. What the book cares about is a young man named Tommaso (the son of the cook) learning how to cook beautiful Renaissance cuisine, and also then apprenticing in the art of Renaissance sculpture, and then bringing these two fields together for incredible innovations in the world of edible a (Read more)

Earlier today, I was doing deliveries when a car started trailing me. I didn't realize it was a sheriff's deputy until the car's blue and red lights came on. The deputy clocked me at 46 MPH in a 35 zone. Luckily, I was let off with a warning.
Eu fecho os meus olhos e vejo uma figura alta e encorpada, com uma cabeça de toiro, olhos vermelhos e sedentos de sangue, o demónio, sentando num alto aponta para a figura e proclama:
"Eis o teu futuro miserável, meio homem, meia besta.

Pouco me resta. Tenho medo, estou triste, as amizades que tenho existem no papel, mas neles não confio, e eles em mim não confiam.

I realized that it's never going to get easier to start compiling a list of all the bands I've seen. Why didn't I do this 20 years ago? To be honest, I probably did. I probably did it in a moleskine notebook, and it probably got lost and ended up in a landfill. I don't think I ever did a digital version.

Anyway, it's remarkably hard. I managed to barf out a couple pages' worth very quickly, but I don't have the shows arranged in any sort of organized way in my memory, so I'm just free-associating all over the place. I haven't been including any local bands, because I wanted to focus my attention on big shows. But I probably should have just put them in and kept going, it kinda derailed my thought process and I hit a wall.

I used to attend package shows sometimes, all-day affairs, 20 bands on the bill, but half the bands have dropped off by the day of the show. I know I saw so many bands at those things but it's hard to find any record of them. Even if I remember the name, the venue, and at least one of the bands who played. Just gone. I was able to find the bands who played Katt Fest 98: Local H, Monster Magnet, Stabbing Westward, and Candlebox. That was Monster Magnet's Powertrip era and they didn't want to be there and it wasn't their best set. Stabbing Westward aren't too cool these days, but they were a HUGE influence on my keyboard playing. Local H are underrated. Candlebox were fine. For years every time I heard a mediocre rocking band playing somewhere I would joke "Hey, is that Candlebox?" They could take it. Frankly, I think Candlebox deserved the hate a lot more than Nickelback, who were just Canadian. Candlebox were hugely popular with listeners but tastemakers hated them and Kevin took it very personally. It wasn't enough to be popular, he needed to be loved too.

The worst show I ever saw is an easy one: Bush with the Goo Goo Dolls. I was 15 and had to ride in the back of a van. The opener were great (Read more)

Just a quick update for those who were wondering, yes, Jiffy corn muffin mix is still A++ 💯 in terms of what I want in a corn muffin (and how I remember them tasting). And 6 muffins for 99¢ plus 1 egg and 1/3 cup of milk is so worth it. The instructions say let the mixture sit 3-4 minutes before scooping into the muffin cups, but I let it sit 10 (per the blueberry corn muffins recipe from a few weeks ago) while the oven was heating, and they domed so nicely. Definitely recommended! I will be enjoying them for breakfast the next few days.

Yesterday I was pretty productive --- did three loads of laundry, deep cleaned my bathroom counter and reorganized it, finally hung my giant Buffy season three poster, hung two tiny shelves above my bed, assembled that lavender wire shelf for Mermaid Bathroom, opened Self Scare Venus, and re-hung the tiny shelves above the front door after they both fell down --- but today I'm not sure what I want to do with my time.

I could read or write or color or build a LEGO set or open some more toys. I don't know. At some point between now and bedtime, I will definitely continue my Hacks re-watch while also playing Royal Match.

Oh, one thing I did today was complain to Amazon and Walmart. I ordered Carina from Amazon over a week ago and they still have not shipped her. Which is frustratingly typical for them, so I was thrilled to see that Walmart also had her in stock! But they haven't actually shipped her either (unless I am mistaken, her status was stuck on "Preparing" for a while and then got moved back to "Placed" --- which I'm thinking means she isn't actually in stock, but for some reason they won't just fucking admit that!). Amazon did say that they will finally ship her within twenty-four hours, but I'm definitely not holding my breath. Maybe I will just order her on eBay.

Speaking of pakidges, I did pick some up after lunch! The Magik action figure I ordered in May, Absolute Green Arrow #3, and the fun coloring book featuring the retired crayons.

Jubilee made it to Avondale yesterday, so she should get delivered very soon. As for the other four packs of Doorables, well, Target shipped them via FedEx. SIGH.

I don't really want to talk about it, but I am not in a good mood today because dudes on the internet are pissing me off. Do ANY of them know how to communicate? I fucking swear!

Oh well, at least Hacks is still one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I am simultaneously anticipating and dreading the final season.

Arrival
General CW: Mild disorientation and relocation, bright sunlight and prolonged daylight

Characters have been arriving on Amberbell for months now, and what began as a chaotic stream of unexpected arrivals has gradually evolved into a well-organized welcome process.

The moment you're pulled through the portal, you're greeted by a small welcome station set up just beyond the arrival point. Friendly volunteers are ready with pamphlets, maps, and a quick explanation of where you are, how you got here, and what you can expect as you begin settling into your new life on the island.

The welcome desk is staffed by a rotating group of local NPCs who volunteer whenever they have the time, though Frank has become the familiar face most newcomers meet first. He's always happy to answer questions, point people in the right direction, or simply offer a reassuring smile to those still trying to process everything.

A welcome basket has been prepared just for you. Inside you'll find a selection of snacks, basic toiletries, a detailed map of Amberbell, and a brand-new phone already loaded with GPS directions to the university dormitories, essential services, and other important locations around town. It's a small gesture, but one intended to make your first day as comfortable as possible

[As tainted as the Crane might be at the moment, Rena and Mari will still go into the newly cleaned kitchen. With help from Lark and Haruaki, the outdoor tables are set up neatly with baked goods; at first simple easy to put together things like strawberry tarts and slightly lumpy-looking sugar cookies, but eventually a few slices of chocolate cake will make it around the tables.

Deena has also taken the liberty of starting up the fire pit just in case anybody is serious about taking out their frustration over the cruelty of the forest out on some unsuspecting trees.

Nancy’s boombox can also be heard throughout the night playing whatever Nancy deems fitting for the occasion.]

This afternoon the sky has lost its pest-fire sickliness in the intermittent washout of rain, but we are into the red blobs on the map and I am using my inhaler. I dreamed of a supporting character from Winterset (1936) as if during the prologue to the plot. I feel brainless and abraded.

Because I had Felled's "Fire Season on the Outer Rim" (2017) on my mind after this ash-fall week, I was reminded that I had never gotten hold of their sophomore LP The Intimate Earth (2021) and behold, there's another bog body in "Sphagnum in the Hinterlands."

I put another pin in the awfulness of the last two years by the fact that I missed the existence of Emmett Nahil's From the Belly (2024), which looks rather barnacle-crusted to my interests. I am not sure I even agree with the author's assertions about the foundations of nautical horror, but I like his passionate championing of Melville over Lovecraft. I never recomended Avi Burton's "We Are All in the Same Boat" (2026).

I meant to grab a copy of M.A. Knight's Feverchain (2026) while I was still at Readercon, but after a lovely and too-brief interaction with the author and the designer in between panels I never made it back into the dealer's room. If we shared the same social media, I could ask if they would be at NecronomiCon.

I would cheerfully read further adventures of this psychogeographer in Albuquerque, but this one stands as an excellent one-shot for anyone who cares about land, water, and the Situationist International: Rath Mercury, "Herkimer Inquiries" (2026).

Yesterday the most complicated thing I did was take a walk, read two novels, and reconstruct my long-lost favorite burger from Christopher's with pepper jack, avocado, and homemade chipotle mayo on an English muffin. I watched a movie for the first time in ages, even if I do not seem possessed of the intellect to do anything about it. It was nice. I am tired of the most boring people in the world doing so much to harm it.
