I just read an article titled "THE ACCURACY OF INFERENCES ABOUT CRIMINALITY BASED ON FACIAL APPEARANCE."  It's from the Journal of Social, Evolutionary, and Cultural Psychology.  The authors found that, in general, we can tell who is a criminal just by looking a person.  Even without additional cues, just by looking a person's face, we can tell.  Pretty astounding, don't you think?

It is not female intuition.  Quite the opposite, sadly.  The findings are the same for men and women, except for one massive anomaly: women rated the convicted rapists significantly less likely than other criminal types to have committed rape.  (Makes sense because, presumably, a convicted rapist is someone who can fake it enough to get into a position of access to victims.  Guys who look like rapists wouldn't get that far.  These are pictures of convicted rapists only.)

I had to pass on the link because, at the end of the article (Appendix A), the authors provide the test they used.  There are 32 pictures of Caucasian men, all in their 20s, from the neck up with no clothing shown, no visible tattoos or piercings, no facial hair except shadows, images cropped and everything made as plain as possible. Grab a piece of paper and see if you can identify which among them are the:
  • 16 convicted criminals, especially the 4 convicted rapists
  • 16 normal college students, nice guys who are probably debating the wisdom of allowing their pictures to be used in this study
I am pretty good at reading people* yet I guessed only 13 out of the 16 convicted criminals, and only 1 out of the 4 convicted rapists.  JFC!  That alarms me.  How well did you do?

*No, I am not a grifter.  Close.  I'm a litigator.  LOL.

P.S.  At some point I am going to figure out the nuances of posting on DW again, but for now I've resumed cross-posting at LJ and allowing comments there.  I miss interacting with my internet friends!

"Hello, hello...is this thing on?"  *g*

1.  One of the clerks I work with has fallen in love with SGA.  She only watched occasionally when the show was on the air, but is now watching all of the episodes in order on DVD.  She came in today absolutely heartbroken about Ford.  LOL!  Memories.

2.  Is it just me or does H50 seem like one giant postcard beckoning you to vacation in Hawaii?  The intro to last night's episode made me think I wouldn't mind being stuck in an FBI safe house.  Waterfalls, lush vegetation, tropical weather...except for the bit about cartel hitmen coming to kill you before you can testify, it seems positively idyllic!

3.  http://www.darcypadilla.com/thejulieproject/intro.html  -- Someone linked me to this photographic documentary on the web without any warnings.  Fail!  To be fair, I love art photography.  Maybe he thought I would be interested in this because we were talking about the Mapplethorpe collection coming to SoCal.  But most of the Mapplethorpe photos I have seen are beautiful!  The Julie Project is not beautiful.  It is heartbreaking.  It angered me.  It disgusted me.  Then it made me ashamed of myself for being so judgmental. Upon reflection, I can sum up my reaction as follows: I could never be a documentary artist (or a Starship Captain in times of peaceful exploration) because I could not just remain an observer while innocents are being harmed.  Fuck the Prime Directive.  I would have intervened.  Also, this documentary is the perfect antidote to self-pity.  Seriously, if you think your life is difficult, imagine being Julie.  No, imagine being Elyssa, in that chilling picture with the shotgun!  The next time one of you gives me the whole, "WOE, my life is so haaaaaaard!" whine, I will send you that link. =P

4.  http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/02/08/smartphone-sins-catholic-church-approves-confession-by-iphone/ -- I think they should have a list of venial sins for which you can get immediate absolution.  "I said the F word in #3 above." --> "Say one Hail Mary and you're absolved."

5.  http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2011/01/26/us_med_abortion_mental_health -- "A 12-year long investigation shows that childbirth increases risk for mental illness but abortion does not."  My aunt said that's just common sense.  One is followed by life as usual in a month or two.  The other is followed by massive upheaval, sleep deprivation, financial responsibility and endless worry for 18 years.  (What, she couldn't have told me this before I had a child?  I kid.  Would not trade him for the world. ♥)
