My not-so-secret vice: Astaire/Rogers screwball musical comedies. Oh, that is the best shit ever! Since I just rewatched them, my two favorite dances:
"Pick Yourself Up" from Swing Time (1936). The context is that Fred Astaire has fallen madly in love with Ginger Rogers after meeting her on the street, but only managed to piss her off. He follows her to her work as a dance instructor, and hires her; so she's sort of annoyed and thinks he's a little stalkery. I can't remember if this is one of the ones where he's playing a professional dancer or not, but of course he pretends not to know how to dance. (Watch the HQ version, if this isn't properly linked)
"Night And Day" from The Gay Divorcee (1934). Uhhh let's see, this would have been early on, when, as usual, Ginger thinks Fred is some kind of annoying stranger stalking her. And, as usual, he sweeps her off her feet.
A lot of people like things like the Waltz in Swing Time, but I guess I like the more "emotional" dances. Fucking Cole Porter, man. The movies are really light on plot and totally interchangeable, but oh, the dancing! As compared to most romcoms, I could totally see Ginger being won over so fast by a dude who could dance like that.
My mom once said, to my surprise, that I was the "more romantic" of her two daughters, but I guess that if you look at my response to shit like this, it's true.
