Pixiv is a japanese art community where artists can upload their work and tag it, and you can search and rate art. It is immensely addicting once you get started, which is why I got trapped in pixiv for hours this afternoon.

To look at things on pixiv, you need to sign up for an account, which is not very hard: here is an easy guide that should get you signed up easily.

To make best use of pixiv, it helps to have a japanese IME installed and the ability to use it, but if anyone reading this is desperate to find the tag for series X and can't, comment and I'll hook you up with a link.

Even if none of these fandoms appeal to you, you have GOT to check out the "random" art I found. Hahahahahahahahaha SERIOUSLY, YOU GOTTA LOOK

Phew, my brain is about to explode. More links later.

Finally, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS AND HOW DO I ACQUIRE IT

I was thinking, hmmm, I should use this as a fannish account, but I'm so out of practice with that sort of thing.

I never really joined western media fandoms, because my schedule for the past decade has been an amazing cockblock to watching things when they're released, or discussing them at that time. I was watching the new Doctor Who weekly for the first season and a half, since I've loved Doctor Who my whole life and was making a special effort, but once I missed a few weeks, I never went back, so everything else now is just hearsay. (Which is just as well, in my opinion - it's amazing the amount of wank that once moribund show has produced in just a few short years.)

The same is basically true of anime/manga stuff; I don't watch or read things on a weekly basis. Once in a while I'll get the urge/time and then devour a series up to the current chapter/episode, and then just leave it. The things that I really like tend to not inspire the huge insane fandoms that Bleach and KHR or whatever do.

I guess the thing that I am most likely to consume close to release date would be video games, and, again, not always the popular ones where it's easy to find other people to get all worked up with.

It'd help if I wrote fanfic or something, but I don't, and fandom seems to involve fic-as-currency nowadays. Hmmm. T_T

To start, I did form [community profile] megaten, so hopefully as more people trickle in, we can get that active over here!

I'm a bit at a loss as to what to do with this shiny new journal! Better use it, I guess.

HEY FACELESS GOOGLERS, COME APRIL 29-30, THIS IS WHAT I'M GOING TO BE DOING:

Yep, April 29-30 is "Big Shell Day," and apparently on pixiv they're going to do a fanart party? I should check that out. I can power through MGS2 in 6-8 hours - that's dedication you should admire.

A coworker mentioned that one of the world-famous senior docs had been consulted to write a paper for the Annals of Something Or Other about "medicine in manga." I looked blank, so she explained that those were Japanese comics, which were "kind of sexy sometimes." I maintained my poker face, and asked her what happened.

"So he had no idea what they were, and so he asked me since I'd been to Japan. I told him to google them."
"At work?"
"The first link he clicked on got him a content blocking page."
"Heh heh heh."

This is like the time the adolescent medicine specialist googled furries.
