musesfool: Astrid Farnsworth at a white board (subtraction is never loss)

My dental appointment went well - it was just a cleaning! - but they still want me to come every three months instead of twice a year. Sigh. Anyway, the appointment was timed so that I did not have coffee or breakfast beforehand, and didn't get home until a little after 1 pm, so I should have just had lunch. But I was so tired that sleep won out over food and I ended up taking a THREE HOUR tour nap. I did finally eat, but now I'm like, maybe I should just go back to bed? Idk.

Anyway, it's Wednesday and I have read some books!

What I've just finished
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. This was enjoyable but very low-key, even at the climax.

Long Live Evil and All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan. Hiilarious and very genre-savvy portal fantasy. I enjoyed both books and am hoping the third one sticks the landing. Sadly, it's not due out until next summer. Alas.

What I'm reading now
Dead Hand Rule by Max Gladstone, which is the third (and final?) book in the Craft Wars trilogy? series? Idk. I'm enjoying it but he is pulling people from all over the first series and I don't always remember who they are since it's been a while since I read those books.

What I'm reading next
As ever, it is a mystery.

I meant to post last night but I could barely keep my eyes open so I went to bed early (and missed a super rare Mets comeback in Atlanta!) and slept for 10 glorious hours! I felt great at work today, and got some stuff done, and made some suggestions about the September board meeting agenda that I am sure the CEO and the Chair will not like, but they wanted to get radical and also not overrun the meeting time by 45 minutes again, and I offered a good way to do it to my boss. We'll see if anyone bites.

I am off tomorrow for the dentist - it should just be a cleaning (though I am braced to hear I need yet another crown) but I am always so tired when it's over. And my team meeting on Tuesday got cancelled so I am tempted to take next Tuesday off since I'm already off Wednesday (my birthday), Thursday, and Friday of next week. My boss was like, sure! but I'm still thinking about it.

I thought I had something else to post about but I can't remember... oh right, I finally watched Project Hail Mary the other night. I enjoyed it but it was too long. And there was not enough Eva Stratt, who was the best thing in the movie.

At one time, the cellar of the current palace was made up of dank, dim chambers where the palace's slave-servants slept and sometimes worked. When the previous Chara made up his mind to free all the palace slaves, there was much discussion over what to do with the former slave-quarters. The somewhat belated consensus by the palace officials was that these rooms were unfit to live in. There was talk of turning the rooms into storage rooms.

To everyone's amazement, the palace's community of eunuchs came forward and asked that the dank, dim chambers be given over to them. They had never before had a place in the palace that belonged solely to them. Many of them, being recently freed slaves, had lived in the slave-quarters; they considered this their home, one that might finally belong to them, rather than to their slave-masters.

The Chara graciously granted them their new quarters and forbade anyone who was not a half-man from entering the quarters, except by invitation of the eunuchs.

I can testify that the eunuch community has done a marvellous job of redecorating the cellar, so that it is bright and cheerful. One room alone has not been touched: the slaves' punishment room, which remains as a stark reminder of this place's bloody past.

If you are invited to visit the eunuchs' quarters, I strongly advise you to visit the punishment room. My advice grows even stronger if you keep slaves yourselves.

[Translator's note: Free-man's Blade includes a visit to the slave quarters, courtesy of a half-man.]

Had a couple of baking fails this weekend, so I guess it's granola bars for breakfast this week! Oh well. Eventually I will bake those myself too, but for now, store-bought is fine. *g* Luckily, this hoisin garlic chicken (NYTimes gift link) turned out well. I added soy sauce in place of salt, and also a sprinkling of Chinese five-spice powder instead of red pepper flakes, and it was delicious. And I have leftovers enough for a couple more meals. I also made bacon this morning, so it'll be another week of chicken bacon ranch wraps for lunch. Uh, not the hoisin chicken, though. Perdue short cuts roasted chicken strips.

And I had the first plums of the summer this weekend and they were so good. Plums! I love them so much! Cherries have also been good, but are much more expensive. And I figured out a use for the leftover seltzer for when Friend L was here - it's a good vehicle for the electrolyte powder I otherwise don't end up using, and this weekend it came in handy.

In other news, this morning, my cleaning service texted me asking if they could come tomorrow. I responded promptly saying, no, but I was available on these other dates. They have not responded. So now I'm like, are they coming tomorrow? Do I have to be ready? Because I am not ready and that is why I said no. Ugh. So now I will scramble to get ready and they won't come. Bah.

New Game for Streaming?

Jul. 4th, 2026 10:03 am
rebelsheart: Original Concept by Me (Default)
[personal profile] rebelsheart
I'm wrapping up Visions of Mana very soon. To that end, I'm looking at what should take it's place on my Thursday night streams.

Trials of Mana

I've played this before, but a single playthrough only covers half the characters. I'd play as the other three!

Echoes of Aincrad

The demo of the first ever Sword Art Online game where you're not playing as a main character from the anime but instead as an original character has received mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. I'm going to play it either way, but do you want to see me play it? Comes out July 9 and I would do a mega stream on the 11th to launch it.

Splatoon Raiders

The fourth entry in the Splatoon Franchise, and the first to focus on a single-player, offline experience. While it offers a cooperative mode, and a mechanic where you can request or provide support to others players, I'd be focusing on the single-player experience. Comes out July 23.

I finally caught up on the last 3 episodes of this season of Abbott Elementary and spoilers )

Also, my internet and cable went out for several hours this afternoon, I'm guessing because of the heat? but I was able to use my phone as a hotspot, so it didn't deter me for long. *wry* I took today off because originally I was supposed to be dog-sitting at my sister's before plans changed, and I decided to keep the 4-day weekend. I'm glad I did. I like my job and I mostly like my coworkers, but I am so tired of people asking me for things. Hopefully, I can get a bit of a respite and a reset.

I hope you are all staying cool if you're in the heatwave. <3

About a week or so ago livejournal seems to have cut access to its platform from certain locations, the US included. By using firefox's free VPN I can access it depending on the country I set it to (France seems to work best for some reason) but thankfully I had basically grabbed everything I wanted to keep from it a bit back and I don't use it much so it just means I'm not perusing my flist there much anymore which doesn't matter much since most folks are here as well. Still though. End of an era. sigh.

The less said about the weather this summer the better. Ugh. Very glad I finished working on that blanket when I did.

For months now there's been accusations of AI usage and pushback (against the usage and the accusations) in different fandoms, particularly swirling around certain Heated Rivalry authors. There were a lot of AI "tells" but recently it was discovered that Claude (and others I think) left specific html code in a work if it was C&Ped directly from the AI to AO3 and there's been ao3 skins created to find it (for example this one that combines the reversi skin and the detection things), a lot of info about all this has been compiled into a googledoc "Fandom has a Hidden Generative AI Problem" (backed up on the internet archive here) and there's an AO3 user, i_hate_ai_fics, bookmarking all discovered AI works (both by using the html finder and fics that left AI prompts in and other basic tells) that can be found here.

Have a ton of [community profile] recthething recs. A bunch of art recs from tumblr (and one vid) and also quite a lot of art recs from [community profile] doodle4doodle

Tall Ships!!! So beautiful!!!

Wednesday reading, also beautiful!

What I've just finished
Six of Crows: A Darker Shore: Letters from Ketterdam by Leigh Bardugo. I don't know why the title is longer than the short story but I loved it! It's an epistolary story, using an investigation of the mysterious captain of The Wraith (tall ships!!!) as the framework, and letters between Kaz and Inej make up many of the documents the investigators are using. Ugh, I love them so much! spoilers )

I really hope this isn't the only time Bardugo chooses to revisit the Dregs and Ketterdam, because I would pay full hardcover price for a full-length, getting the band back together heist novel.

What I'm reading now
Radiant Star by Ann Leckie. I'm enjoying it but I only have a very vague recollection of what happened in the main trilogy, so some of it is probably going over my head. And I also realized I haven't read Translation State so hopefully that is not to relevant to this one. I do enjoy how Leckie plays with POV though.

What I'm reading next
As always, who can say?

Do the reformers have enough time and skill to bring about radical change in the dungeon? Will they be able to overcome their mistrust of one another?

NEWS & UPCOMING FICTION

I hope those of you who have been affected the heat waves have been keeping cool. I and my family are nicely air-conditioned so far, but the past month or so has seen me dealing with a documentation problem, a flooded basement, and three family medical crises leading to trips to the emergency room and, in one case, a stay in the hospital.

All that hanging around for doctors to arrive has left me plenty of time in which to write, but I fell short of time in June in which to edit and lay out my next e-book. So I've rescheduled the release of the now-aptly-titled "Wait" to August.

In the meantime, I've decided to add in a new feature to my monthly updates: "From the Backlist." I know that I have a somewhat formidable backlist, and it may seem challenging to know where to start with it. Here's the secret: Start anywhere. I've written nearly all my stories so that they can be read independently of one another. Of course, if you hate spoilers with a passion, you'll want to start at the beginning of each series cycle. But otherwise, you may enjoy having the chance to dip into various spots of my backlist.

Website news: I've added Edward Eager to my Links page and have updated the links to other authors. Among other things, the site of Sylvia Engdahl (which hasn't been updated since 2024) has gone down, which is a little alarming, since the author was born in 1933. If you're interested in her writings, her quite-reasonably-priced books and ebooks are still available at bookstores - though for how long, I can't say; her more recent novels are self-published. Her Children of the Star trilogy, which I first read as a teen, deeply influenced my own writing. (I unconsciously swiped the ending of The Breaking from one of her novels.)

My fiction announcements are also available by e-mail and feeds.

So I did finish season 5 of The Bear last night - instead of the episodes being shambolic and overly long, they were mostly a tight 22 minutes (there were 3 I think that were longer, out of 8) and spoilers )

*

In other news, my sister and brother-in-law took Baby Miss L and her parents to Disney World this week, and I've already gotten adorable photos of them with Winnie the Pooh! Hopefully there will be many more where that came from. *g*

Also, I forgot it was a short work week and made myself a big tray of chicken cutlet parm for lunch/dinner. Oh well, it will still be delicious.

I slept in this morning, but I am still so tired. Luckily it's a short work week and I have a 4-day weekend next week for the 4th.

I got a late start, but I did make blueberry corn muffins and they turned out well, but I think maybe I just prefer to have blueberry or corn muffins? Idk, but I still have corn meal so maybe I'll just make corn muffins next weekend.

I also have cherries which I am excited to eat - there is so much fresh fruit now and all of it was on sale this week, so I had to choose, because I can't eat all of it before it goes bad. And last night, I set up the first coffee granita of the season, and had some earlier and it was so good.

Now I've started watching season 5 of The Bear and will probably try to finish it this weekend so I don't get too spoiled. I also watched that one-off episode Gary but did not enjoy it much. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach have great chemistry, but spoilers ) It had some good needle-drops, though. Anyway, hopefully they stick the landing. I'll guess we'll see!

After that, I have so many other things to watch, so I will probably just end up rewatching something I'm already familiar with so I don't have to make a choice. *wry*

Hi Dreamwidth, long time no post.

I kind of miss longer-form writing/musing, and some of my Bluesky friends seem like they're trying to reinvigorate their use of this site, so maybe I'll give it a try too?

For all that haven't known what's up with me in the last... decade?... uh well I still own a great bookstore, I still have 2 awesome kids, and I still have 2 wives but not for much longer. One of my partners and I are breaking up with the other due to Many Reasons which I won't get into here, but it's been a long time coming. So I'll be getting divorced then probably getting married? IDK. It sucks. I don't recommend this process but I think it's what needs to happen.

My kids are 10 and 7 and both are neurodivergent with some pretty big support needs. They're brilliant and funny and wild and they take up soooooooo much time and energy. I love them and wouldn't have my life any other way, except I do feel bad for how many of my friendships I've let slide over the course of parenting and my business taking up all my life and time.

Last year I went and saw MCR in August with 3 of my best friends, and uh. I'm so back in this fandom. It's been a bright light during a hard year. We're seeing them again this August, here's hoping this leg of Gerard Way's Fetish Opera is just as thrilling as the previous two legs have been.

I'm now on tumblr for pretty much exclusively MCR reasons ([tumblr.com profile] phasingintooscillation) and on Bluesky ([bsky.social profile] were-duck.bsky.social [BlueskySocial]) for maintaining broader human connections who occasionally put up with me yelling about Frank Iero.

Sometimes I read books, too? Not so many lately but I'd like to write about reading more, so maybe this is a good place for that?

Anyhow, hi. How're you all. I miss you <3
