Main Characters

     Bull
Voiced by: Adam DeVine

A blue-ish gray dog and the main protagonist. Resembles a bully breed of dog (ex. Pit Bulls, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, etc), but is implied to be a mixed breed.

  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Bull is perfectly cordial and flirtatious towards Honey but is hesitant to actually mate with her despite her obvious goading.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Bull is a friendly dog who loves Honey romantically. He also just so happens to have an insatiable sex drive that causes him to hump everything, which is why his owners decide to neuter him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Bull realizes he's about to get neutered, he goes on a long rant about how his life is over and everything will be horrible without his balls — right in front of Rocco, Fetch, and Lucky, who are all previously neutered. They are initially sympathetic and try to assure him that there is life after the surgery but lose their patience with him when he refuses to listen and keeps bemoaning how he's going to turn into a zombie, and all the joy will be gone from his life. He later apologizes for this, and they forgive him, understanding that it was the panic and grief talking.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Bull is good-natured but incredibly horny, which is also what gets him into hot water with his owners, who decide to have him neutered to stop him from humping everything.
  • Motor Mouth: Bull has a habit of rambling when he’s nervous, mostly around Honey and later with Molasses.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Despite being a Lovable Sex Maniac, Bull is only attracted to Honey. Even when he meets Molasses, a dog who looks almost exactly like Honey and wants to have sex with him, all he can think and talk about with her is Honey.

     Rocco
Voiced by: Idris Elba

A fawn British Boxer and one of Bull's friends.

  • Berserk Button: Rocco gets violent whenever someone insinuates there's something wrong with him because of how he was raised due to his Mommy Issues.
  • Face of a Thug: Rocco is a muscular, intimidating-looking Boxer, right down to wearing a chain around his neck in place of a collar. While he doesn't take shit from anybody and clearly has some Mommy Issues, Rocco also tries his best to be a supportive friend that always turns up when his buddies need him.
  • Mommy Issues: Rocco clearly has them, mentioning multiple times that he was the runt of a large litter that never got the teat, and being fascinated with another dog with her teats out when the group has been taken to the pound.
  • Oedipus Complex: Implied. His insecurity about not being able to suckle on his mother's nipples as a puppy culminates in him wanting to suck on a female dog's nipples at the animal shelter.

     Honey
Voiced by: Kathryn Hahn

A gold and white Borzoi and Bull's Love Interest.

  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Honey, a well-groomed Borzoi who is all about her presentation in the show circuit, has all the raunchiness and lowbrow sense of humor that most of the male characters do.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: She's quite friendly with Sterling, seemingly unaware of his blatant narcissism. This changes after she first realizes that she doesn't want to be like the other show dogs, then has to endure Sterling bragging about himself before, during, and after sex.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She is fond of Bull for his earnest and friendly nature.

     Fetch
Voiced by: Fred Armisen

A black and tan Dachshund and one of Bull's friends.

     Lucky
Voiced by: Bobby Moynihan

A Jack Russel Terrier and one of Bull's friends.

Supporting Characters

Dogs

     Sterling
Voiced by: Beck Bennett

A silver and white Borzoi.

  • Berserk Button: He's usually a Smug Snake, but Bull implying that he's inbred earns him a Death Glare from Sterling.
  • Big Bad: The closest thing the movie has to one, being the main dog physically in the way of Bull mating with Honey.
  • Inbred and Evil: Downplayed and lampshaded. To call Sterling "evil" would be a stretch since he's just a massive douche at the end of the day, but as Bull points out, pure-bred dogs like Sterling had to be inbred for generations to get their desired traits.
  • Kick the Dog: No pun intended with this trope, but Sterling does this to poor Luther when the latter explains how he was neutered, by disowning Luther as his friend and insulting him even further.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Sterling spends most of his screentime being a pompous prick to everyone, including Honey, whom he's hoping to mate with only so they can produce a litter of expensive purebred pups like them. He also insults dogs that have been spayed and neutered, even throwing his friend Luther to the wayside after his operation, calling them "mutilated freaks". At the end of the film, while Honey did indeed end up pregnant, but it's clear that the Pitbull mix Bull is the father of the puppies, and Sterling's final moment in the movie is him being dragged away to have a forced indulgent party similar to Luther and Bull's before being neutered, much to Luther's satisfaction.
  • Meaningful Name: "Sterling" is a quality type of silver, and Sterling has luxurious silver fur.
  • Narcissist: Sterling only cares about one thing, himself, and is absurdly self-obsessed to the extent that he can't even register Bull getting in the way of his attempt to mate with Honey because he never bothered to tell Honey and Bull's voices apart, let alone open his eyes during the act, because all he cares about is reinforcing his belief that he's a Sex God and is eager to stud because it means making lots of "little Sterlings". He even calls out his own name during sex.
  • Smug Smiler: Sterling's default expression is one of self-satisfied superiority.

     Frankie
Voiced by: River Gallo

A black and tan Doberman.

     Molasses
Voiced by: Michelle Buteau

A promiscuous red Borzoi.

     Luther
Voiced by: Aaron LaPlante

A blue Great Dane.

  • Cone of Shame: His Establishing Character Moment has him wear one after his neutering and he's clearly miserable about it. He gets it removed in the epilogue, having recovered from the neutering.
  • The Dog Bites Back: During the ending, he taunts Sterling when the latter's owners force him into an indulgent party before neutering him.
Luther: (smug) Karma's a bitch. (pants) Suck my unobstructed dick, motherfucker!
  • No Sympathy: Granted, after how Sterling mistreated him after his operation, he simply laughs at his False Friend's impending neutering.
  • Nothing but Skin and Bones: He's quite skinny and his ribs and spine are visible. It's unclear if this is a side-effect of his neutering or if he was always like this.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears during the beginning and the ending of the movie but sharing his neutering experience with his friends kickstarts the plot as Bull realizes he's next in line to be neutered during the indulgent no-rules party his owners throw for him.

Humans

     Bull's Owners
Voiced by: Grey DeLisle (Nana); Scott Weil (Alex); Julie Nathanson (Julia); Michelle Ruff (Emma)

  • Obliviously Evil: Bull's owners are unaware of the psychological turmoil that Bull's impending neutering is making him go through, they're just trying to make him stop being a nuisance. They try to comfort him ahead of the procedure by indulging his desires and showering him with gifts and treats beforehand and were actively searching for him the entire movie after he ran away.
