"I love acting. It's my playground; it lets me explore. But my happiness in this world, my level of peace, is never going to be dictated by acting. My goal in life is to detach from the egoic mind."

So. You got yourself onto Chris Evans' page.

Christopher Robert Evans (born June 13, 1981 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American actor and director.

Evans was initially known for playing "smart aleck" and "pretty boy" types, including the desperate everyman protagonist Ryan in Cellular, Johnny Storm a.k.a. The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies, "Harvard Hottie" in The Nanny Diaries, and Jake Wyler ("The Popular Jock") in Not Another Teen Movie.

Though he's never shied away from more serious roles (Sunshine, Push, London, Fierce People, The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond), it was still a great surprise to the mainstream public when Marvel announced Evans as their choice to play the straitlaced and serious-minded Captain America in their Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, despite Playing Against Type, he made a splash on Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (particularly the lattermost; as Honest Trailers put it, "Who knew Captain America was so cool?!").

Off the success of these films, Evans practically became the MCU's answer to Christopher Reeve, growing inextricably associated with his character in ways aided by the fact that his occasional measured-but-outspoken interventions on matters of politics and social justice are pretty in-character for Captain America. In other words, he developed a whole new acting "type". As a result, he perhaps felt the need to start Playing Against Type again, which he did by becoming the psychopathic hitman Mr. Freezy in The Iceman and the gritty Anti-Hero Curtis in Snowpiercer in 2013. In 2014, he made his directorial debut with the romantic-comedy film Before We Go. He confirmed in a profile for The Hollywood Reporter’s April 2019 issue that Avengers: Endgame would be his last time playing Rogers.

Not to be confused with the British DJ and TV presenter who was married to Billie Piper, nor with fellow MCU Chrises Hemsworth and Pratt. He is the older brother of actor Scott Evans; no relation to Welsh actor Luke Evans. He is also the nephew of former Massachusetts congressman Mike Capuano.

Between playing Captain America, Johnny Storm, Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Jensen in The Losers (2010), Casey Jones in TMNT, and Curtis in Snowpiercernote , Evans has perhaps portrayed the largest amount of distinct characters in comic book film adaptations.

He married Portuguese actress Alba Baptista in 2023 and the two had a child in 2025.

Tropes & Trivia about his works:

  • Becoming the Mask: While he now wants to get away from the role, Evans is still seen by many as embodying Captain America's ideals and persona, as evidenced with his politically concerned comments on Twitter, friendly interactions with his fans and habit of attempting to brighten the days of others by appearing at charity events and similar gigs. Furthermore, at the 2019 Academy Awards, when Regina King nearly tripped on her dress approaching the stage, Evans gave her a hand and at least one fan playfully noted that "Captain America's work is never done."
    • It's gotten to the point where his fans on twitter openly address him as "Cap" and provide plenty of references to his MCU work whenever he posts.
    • Of course, this is very ironic, considering the fact that Cap was a major Playing Against Type role for him, as he mostly used to play snarky bad boys like Johnny Storm before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: He's voiced Casey Jones in TMNT, Stewart Stanton in Battle for Terra, and the titular character of Lightyear. He also voiced Human Torch and Captain America in a few video games.
  • Directed by Cast Member: He both directed and starred in Before We Go.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: To play the part of Captain America, he put on 20-30 pounds, waxed his body, and dyed his brown hair blonde.
  • Mr. Fanservice
    • In his first movie as Cap, his body is digitally altered to look scrawny, which makes it a great surprise when, after he's treated with the super-soldier stuff, he emerges from the pod looking like... well, like Chris Evans. Without a shirt. In fact, Peggy Carter reaching out to touch Cap's chest wasn't scripted. That was Hayley Atwell seeing her co-star shirtless for the first time and not being able to help herself.
    • And in The Avengers, where the first shot of Cap is framed to show off his butt. Referenced in Avengers: Endgame as "America's Ass."
    • The scene where Cap stops a helicopter with his bare hands in Captain America: Civil War was added specifically to show his physique tensed and straining. When Evans showed up on set wearing a leather jacket, The Russo Brothers sent him back to Wardrobe and had him put on a shirt that was several sizes too small so that his musculature would be on full display.
    • When he reappeared as Cap in Avengers: Infinity War, the Manly Facial Hair and generally more grizzled look made about half of the internet swoon.
    • In Fantastic Four, one of his most memorable scenes is Johnny Storm running in with only a puffy pink jacket covering his lower half... and then the film sequel had him in only a towel.
    • What he’s mostly remembered for in What's Your Number?.
    • Lest we forget, his famous banana split performance in Not Another Teen Movie.
  • Playing Against Type: Though it's now probably his most iconic role, Captain America was quite different from his previous performances. He generally played jerks (some with hearts of gold, others just pure assholes), so Steve Rogers (a loyal, kind, incredibly heroic character) was quite the change. Even after Avengers: Endgame, where his main tenure as Captain America ended, he has largely returned to playing dicks.
